We remember the grand myths of standard-bearers and empire-builders, but we forget the raw, human cost: the agonizing winters where the wind howled like a starving wolf, the agonizing choices made when the rations ran out, and the shallow graves that dug a highway across a continent. This is not a tale of seamless triumphs, but of ordinary men, women, and children who pushed past the edge of the known world, proving that the true price of discovering a new home is often everything you have left to lose.

A wagon train chasing the promise of a better life, a shortcut that became a death sentence, and a winter no one was ready for. The Donner Party set out for California in 1846 and ended up snowbound in the Sierra Nevada, trapped for months with dwindling food, rising panic, and an unthinkable choice: starve together, or survive by consuming the dead. By the time rescuers finally broke through the drifts, the trail they left behind was less a story of pioneers and more a gruesome legend of desperation, betrayal, and what humans are capable of when there is nothing left to eat.

The Yukon River sits about 4,400 km (about 2,735 miles) from my door, so it's a little far, but this is our first trip to the Yukon, and I couldn't have been more excited by it. This absolutely bug-nuts story came courtesy of listener, Jonny Wilkie, a resident, and he inspired me to want to incorporate more minisodes from story suggestions you've all supplied that didn't have enough beef on them to inflate into a full episode, but are just too damn good not to want to share. Also, this came out about 30% shorter than a regular episode, so they're not-so-minisodes. No matter.I was going to add a cooking segment to today's story, but opted for the quick and benign details of an open-air BBQ that flambés metric tons of food a lot quicker and grosser than you'd think. I settled for the details of the worst nature hike anyone's ever attempted on this show. And that includes the students of Wolf Creek and the Uruguayan Rugby Team. The Donner Party was a group of American pioneers who migrated to California along the Oregon Trail in a wagon train from the Midwest. After taking a new and dangerous shortcut, the party became trapped by an exceptionally heavy snowstorm in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Today's True Weird Stuff - The Littlest Survivor   In 1846, the Donner Party set out westward seeking new land and opportunity, but their journey turned into a nightmare when they became trapped by snow in the unforgiving Sierra Nevada. Starvation, freezing temperatures, and impossible choices claimed the lives of many members of the Donner Party. Eliza Donner Houghton, the youngest survivor and among the last to be rescued, witnessed the loss of both parents and bore witness to fear, desperation, and horrors no child should endure.

In the finale of our series on The Donner Party, rescue groups head off for Truckee Lake and Alder Creek, hoping to save as many survivors as they could. For many members of The Donner Party, the rescue crews came too late. Some had died. Others were too depleted to make the journey back to safety. Ultimately, of the 87 members of The Donner Party, 41 died. The survivors did their best to lead normal lives, but many of them struggled. They carried unspeakable trauma. They were judged.
