Michael Oldroyd - Comedy Podcast

Mike talks about the stock market being at an all-time high & how somebody must be tickling the gooch of the bull properly on Wall Street. He also talks about the funniest bet made during the Superbowl which was a $10 for a $15 million payout if Taylor Swift scored a touchdown. Of course, he talks about Valentine's Day, and superheroes because Deadpool 3 is on the horizon. Speaking of movies, he talks about going to see Lisa Frankenstein in theatres recently, which was directed by Robin WIlliams's daughter. He nostalgically mentions Robin in an attempt to honor him as well. He covers a variety of topics and covers his upcoming shows and his upcoming trip to Austin, TX where he'll be headlining The Fallout Theater on 2/29. He also shares a funny story about driving around with his friend with Asbergers, and how ridiculous but awesme it is to be around him sometimes. Enjoy the episode!

This week on Yes But Why, I chatted with my friend Jess Lonett, an enthusiastic human who loves collaborating with other enthusiastic humans.Jess Lonett is a cat mom, a glitter enthusiast, a #swiftie, an inspiration hoarder, a playlist curator, a donut lover, and an improviser based in Austin, Texas! She is what some may call a human woman who likes attention and has been capturing the attention of friends, family and strangers alike in a variety of ways since birth. She's won silver medals as a competitive dancer, played Goldilocks as the lead in her 3rd grade class play, done kicklines in high school football halftime shows on the pom pom squad, and been knocked down as a jammer on a small town roller derby team. She performs comedy regularly at Fallout Theater and she writes a blog called “!!!” (for real though, the website is http://www.exclamationpointexclamationpointexclamationpoint.com/ )Turns out, Jess is from Pittsburgh; and, even though I didn't know that until this chat, I should have assumed. She is as delightful and wonderfully creative as the other amazing ladies I've interviewed from Pittsburgh. Amazing town. Jess and I are compatriots from the Austin improv scene. I have had the pleasure of coaching Jess in improv and directing her in sketch comedy a few times over the years. In our conversation, Jess told me that she started as a performer like so many of us do – choreographing dances in her basement. We shared notes on both winning lip sync contests back in the day. And then, Jess told me she hosted a radio show in college called “Groovy Cupcakes.” Now that is pretty much the most perfectly Jess thing I've ever heard. Jess loves music; that's how she got to Austin. She is a lover of mixtapes (aren't we all) and she is a curator of some amazing Spotify playlists. Jess is an appreciator of art and the people who make art. That is something we really bond over and share. Jess has such a welcoming energy. She told me that she is community first, creativity second, when it comes to her extracurricular activities. From improv to volleyball to dance, Jess brings the joy to every scene she encounters. It's all about connecting with people. And Jess is an amazing success at that. This week on Yes But Why, I had a lovely time chatting with Maddie Cordovano, the newest Conservatory Director at Fallout Theater in Austin. Maddie Cordovano has been an improviser for a little over 14 years. She trained at iO and The Second City in Chicago before moving to Austin where she signed with her first agent and wrote her first solo show. She is now the new Conservatory Director at Fallout Theater and is working to pursue a career in voice over acting. You can catch her going wild on stage (and off) all over the city but mostly at her show “Pioneers” on Saturday nights at Fallout. In our conversation, Maddie talked about having lots of diverse interests and dipping her toes into lots. She definitely has a creative thread throughout them all but deciding on one course of study was hard. Maddie was always doing theater growing up and at college but she, like so many of us, didn't think of it as a career option. After an amazing experience writing and acting in a play in Spain, Maddie decided that she should put some effort into creative pursuits. She moved to Chicago and immersed herself in the improv scene. She learned a lot from that experience, not only about her own creative skills but also about her administrative abilities. Maddie is a welcoming soul and she really loves bringing people together and organizing communities. She shared how excited she is to have joined the Fallout staff. We bond over holding the same job in the same space, many years apart, and how special it is to be the first person to connect with incoming artists. Support Maddie by taking classes at Fallout Theater and by attending (or performing in) her weekly improv show, Pioneers. This week on Yes But Why, I interviewed writer and actor, Pete Parsons. Pete Parsons is an entertainer who currently lives in Austin Texas. A graduate of The Theater School at DePaul University, Pete learned the most about what it takes to be an artist from the Chicago improv theaters and their classes and communities. These days, you can catch him at the Fallout Theater in downtown Austin. Every Saturday night there, you can see Pete hosting Pioneers, an improv show that features a new cast of improvisers each week. In our conversation, we talk about how living a theatrical life was a forgone conclusion in Pete's mind. Even from a very young age, he knew that he would be a performer. And luckily, he grew up in a town with a pretty amazing children's theater. So Pete has been onstage for his whole life. We talk about the pandemic and how all the chaos really sapped Pete's creativity. There was just so much going on. Some people really dug into online content creation but that's not Pete's thing. (That is not to say that he doesn't curate some pretty fun Instagram accounts: @littlehighbear and @wowsecretmountain.) But onstage is the place to be and so when Fallout reopened, Pete jumped at the chance to host Pioneers. I know how it can be. Hosting a show is just enough action to keep your mind busy. Pete expressed to me that he's still very much in the midst of figuring out where his career will take him. We talk about options. We discuss ideas. Pete is a great artist and he has reinvented himself before and when he decides what his next big thing will be, I am sure it will be glorious. Pete is a really cool dude. In the press kit he sent me, this is what he sent about supporting him: “If you would like to support Pete Parsons, check out Pioneers or his comic "Little High Bear" but if you want to have a bigger impact, donate to The Innocence Project.” Awesome. Pete also sent links to his upcoming shows and you should check them out because he is MAGIC onstage! What A CharacterA Character Showcase Featuring Austin's Funniest SketchFourth Wednesdays at 8pm at Fallout Theater.Next show: Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 9:30 pmhttps://falloutcomedy.com/shows/what-a-character-2/PioneersNew world. This week on Yes But Why, listen in as I interview filmmaker and improv instructor, Brandon Reich. Texas native Brandon Reich is an independent filmmaker as well as a teacher of Sketch & Improv at the Fallout Comedy Theater in Austin, Texas. Brandon is a five time "top ten finalist" for Austin's 48hr Film Project. He previously worked for and performed at the world-renowned comedy theater, The Second City, in Chicago. Brandon also recently made his first feature film, The Bob Zula, now available on Amazon. In our chat, Brandon shares his unique path through film school, starting with technical training at New York Film Academy and then onto Columbia College for storytelling, directing, and film theory. We talk about Brandon's love for making comedy films and how they are so much harder to navigate than dramas (sorry film snobs). Brandon tells me about his travels trying to find his way as an artist – from college in NYC, to a film production internship in Houston, to improv and indy filmmaking in Chicago. Now that he is older and a dad, Brandon has put his focus onto teaching film and improv and we totally connect on how fulfilling teaching can be. Brandon and I bond over our mutual connection the Fallout Theater in Austin. Brandon tells me how much improv shapes the way he creates art altogether. I get on my soapbox about how improv is considered uncool and I'm fine with that if it keeps the jerks out. Brandon is a super sweet guy and we had a lot of fun chatting! Currently, Olivia cohosts a weekly podcast called We Wrote The Book, where every episode she and her friends come up with a pitch for a new musical. In our conversation, Olivia and I discuss dramaturgy and stage management and all the cool yet under appreciated jobs in theater. We talk about building characters from wigs, taking amazing online workshops and writing sitcom scripts. Olivia tells me about a meditative practice she does to find funny and magical moments in life. We have a deep talk about finding community during the pandemic. He has written and directed various short films and his work has been shown at the Austin Spotlight Film Festival, Austin Comedy Film Festival, Austin Micro Film Festival, and GELOS Comedy Film Festival. Jer is also a comedian and musical improviser who can be seen at the Hideout Theatre, Fallout Theater, Coldtowne Theater, and the Institution Theater. He performs as one half of the Gothic musical improv duo “House of the Bleeding Chicken” and he is also a member of the Fallout Theatre sketch troupe, “The Floor is Lava.” In our conversation, Jer tells me about his obsession with cartoons as a kid. Jer loves “Rocko's Modern Life” as well as the Hanna Barbera oeuvre. We talk about the artists who have creatively influenced us. Jer names weird and provocative animator, Bill Plympton as one of his inspirations. He also gushes about his love for the movie, “Pig Death Machine,” and its punk rock creators, Jon Moritsugu and Amy Davis. We gab about the craziest performance art pieces we have been a part of and also those we witnessed. Jer shares how he got into performing a form of musical improv he calls “gibberish opera.” Jer and I discuss how it can be lonely to create art. I deeply commiserate with him about how tough it can be to find collaborators that match your level of excitement and dedication. Eight Men Out is a 1988 sports drama film based on Eliot Asinof's 1963 book Eight Men Out: The Black Sox and the 1919 World Series. It was written and directed by John Sayles. The film is a dramatization of Major League Baseball's Black Sox scandal, in which eight members of the Chicago White Sox conspired with gamblers to intentionally lose the 1919 World Series. Much of the movie was filmed at the old Bush Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Kristen Dees works with Wendy and wants to build sets for movies and stage shows. Devin Dorsey performs weekly with Sweet Lightning at Fallout Theater and was in the stageplay DoomTown.

Austin was one of the film's strongest premiering cities for the hit film "Crazy Rich Asians," thanks to an effort from local leaders, including Christine Hoang of Color Arc Productions, to fill local theaters. Hoang, who is hosting an Asian Pacific American artist meet-up at the Vortex on Sept. 29, and Austin comedians Yola Lu and Santino Fernandez came in to talk about how the movie has rallied Austin’s Asian community. Lu and Fernandez also talked about their comedy troupes, Y’all, We Asian and Hot Pot Comedy, which host regular improv and sketch shows, including a Sept. 20 event at the Fallout Theater called "This Asian American Life." ALSO: This month’s Statesman Selects is Scott Von Doviak’s new book, “Charlesgate Confidential," and in this week's podcast, Austin360 writer Joe Gross interviews the Austin writer whose work appears in the Onion A/V Club about his fiction debut, a noir set in three time periods in Boston. In this week’s Webb Report, Eric Webb explains Matthew McConaughey’s usual recipe for making a margarita. In "A Toast," we recommend TopGolf, the popular, multi-story driving range that's also a bar and restaurant, a 2015 article in Jacobin Magazine called "Why the Rich Love Burning Man," and "Wild Nights with Emily," a movie about a love affair between Emily Dickinson, portrayed by Molly Shannon, with another woman.
