This week we look at improving the health of children and young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through participation. “The MJA acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which we live and work across Australia.  This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Wangal people. I pay my respects to their Elders past and present.”  Dr Jordan Cory a Kamilaroi woman and Bonnie Dukakis a Gunditjmara woman who were co-authors of an MJA paper on participation of Indigenous children and young people to improve health and wellbeing.  In this podcast, they talk to Sally Block about the paper and many other aspects of the health of young Indigenous peoples. Cultural safety is explored and described - as not another tick a box alongside fire training in an organisation - but an evolving commitment. Ms Dukasis is the CEO of The Koori Youth Council in Melbourne and we find out what they are doing for Indigenous young people.

Qahir Dhanani is a Managing Director and Partner at Boston Consulting Group, where he leads engagements with multilateral and international financial institutions, as well as with donor and philanthropic agencies. Prior to joining BCG, Qahir held senior positions at the World Bank, including Advisor to the CEO, and began his career at the Aga Khan Development Network. Born in Kenya and raised in Canada, Qahir brings a deeply international perspective to his work on development finance, institutional reform, and global governance. He joined us for this conversation in a personal capacity. We open by exploring Qahir's personal journey into the world of multilateralism, shaped by his family's move from Kenya to Canada at the dawn of the first Gulf War. From there, we ask Qahir to define multilateralism beyond the summits and headlines, and he makes the case that international cooperation quietly underpins the mundane parts of everyday life - from telecommunications to air travel. We trace the evolution of multilateral institutions across decades of geopolitical change & discuss why today's talk of institutional gridlock echoes tensions the system has weathered before, from the Cold War to the end of globalization's heyday.The conversation turns to the concept of "variable geometry" and the growing role of coalitions of small & middle powers in tackling shared challenges, from digital governance to AI regulation. Artists — if you take commissions, here's the number that should frighten you. Scope drift, the polite, gradual expansion of a commission beyond what you agreed, eats twenty to thirty per cent of the original fee in unpaid work on most commissions I see. That isn't a margin problem. That's your profit. Gone. On every job. And it isn't because you did bad work. It's because nobody taught you how to manage what happens after the deposit lands. Administrative Professionals Day 2026 is celebrated on Wednesday, April 22, to recognize the essential work of administrative staff, including secretaries, assistants, and support professionals. It is also celebrated all month in April. For our Administrative Professional Empowerment Series, Plan Dulce Hosts Michelle E.  Zuñiga, PhD, AICP (she/her/hers)  and Haydee Urita-Lopez (she/her/hers) interview Beatrice Pacheco (she/her/ella), Chief Clerk at the City of Los Angeles' Planning Department. Beatrice Pacheco is originally from East Los Angeles, California, and lived in the City of La Puente. In 1984 Beatrice joined the Army and she became an Administrative Specialist, she left for her first permanent duty station at Fort Red Cloud in Uijeongbu, South Korea.  After that tour of duty she was stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington state where she married and remained until 1987.After her Army life she worked various clerical jobs at private companies and right before she joined the City of Los Angeles, she worked at one of the most rewarding jobs she'd had.  It was with a glue factory in the City of Industry and was only 10 minutes away from home.  This was a rewarding position because she learned how to purchase high dollar raw materials which were used to produce the glue sold to companies like Bear and Vista Paint.  She also learned how to manage large amounts of inventory and how to supervise a warehouse.  Knowing that she needed to provide for her son and herself, being a single parent, she decided to apply for the City of Los Angeles.  Beatrice applied for the City's entry level position of Clerk Typist in 2000 and was hired joining the LAPD City Attorney Liaison Unit. They took in misdemeanor cases and assisted the public with their case status.  She was promoted to Senior Administrative Clerk in 2001 with the Department of Building and Safety and then came to Planning on a promotion to Principal Clerk with the Records Management Unit of the Planning Department in 2007.  Beatrice is still with the Planning Department and was promoted to Chief Clerk in 2014 which is her current position. Beatrice considers herself fortunate enough to have a wonderful team in the Records unit and has created great relationships with their management staff and the office of the City Attorney's office.  This has been instrumental in her success as the Custodian of Records for the Department because she handles the Public Records Act Requests and Subpoenas that are served.  As she looks towards retirement in a couple of years, she is so proud of those that she has mentored and who have been promoted to other positions.  That has been one of her greatest accomplishments while working for the City of Los Angeles.--------------------------------------Plan Dulce is a podcast by members of the ⁠⁠Latinos and Planning Division⁠ of the American Planning Association⁠. If you watched President Trump's recent State of the Union address, you probably heard about the new Trump accounts, also known as 530A accounts. In this episode, I break down how these tax-advantaged investment accounts are designed to work, who qualifies, and—just as importantly, what we still don't know. There's been a lot of excitement, especially around the $1,000 seed money for eligible children. But before you rush to open one, there are several unanswered questions that deserve your attention.   What Are Trump Accounts—and Who Qualifies? Trump accounts were introduced under the 2025 "Big Beautiful Bill Act" and are designed to help U.S. children build long-term wealth. Parents, grandparents, and others can contribute up to $5,000 per year per child until age 18. To jumpstart participation, children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, are eligible for a $1,000 federal seed contribution. Unlike a Roth IRA, these accounts do not require earned income to contribute. That's a major difference. Most children can't fund retirement accounts because they don't have income. These accounts are meant to give them a head start from birth. To qualify, a child must be a U.S. citizen, have a valid Social Security number, and be under age 18. The Trump accounts website shows mockups featuring individual stocks like Nvidia, Caterpillar, Home Depot, and Tesla. That certainly grabs attention. But Treasury guidance suggests investments may be limited to broad U.S. equity index funds or mutual funds, not individual stocks. If that holds true, I actually think that may benefit most investors. Broad-based index funds have historically outperformed many individual stock pickers over time. But it's important to understand what you're signing up for before you contribute. Another question I address is whether these accounts could meaningfully impact the stock market. With over 3 million sign-ups already, the initial $1,000 seed funding could total more than $3 billion. Add in private contributions and potential employer matches, and that number could grow to $7–8 billion invested when markets reopen after July 4. That sounds significant, but compared to total daily trading volume, it's less than 2%. It may provide a small positive impact, but it's unlikely to cause a dramatic market surge.   Taxes, Custodians, and the Big Unknown at Age 18 There are still major tax questions. Because contributions are considered gifts and the child doesn't have immediate access to the funds, this could create gift tax reporting complications. Even if contributions fall under the $19,000 annual exclusion (for 2026), a gift tax return may still be required due to the lack of "present interest." Then there's the big question: how will withdrawals be taxed at age 18? There's no upfront deduction for contributions, which means this isn't structured like a traditional IRA. But it's also not clearly a Roth. My expectation is that only the gains will be taxed, but we don't yet know whether that will be ordinary income or capital gains. Until we get final guidance, I strongly believe record-keeping will be critical. Track contributions carefully. If custodians change or records are lost, your child could face unnecessary tax complications later. For now, here's what we do know: if your child, or a grandchild, niece, or nephew, qualifies for the $1,000 seed money, make sure the account gets opened.
