The cast of PGraph joins to talk about their special brand of narrative improv, being together as a group for 15+ years, and their book 'Do It Now: Essays on Narrative Improv'. Since their premiere in November of 2005, Parallelogramophonograph has been more than just any improv troupe. Fiercely dedicated to the craft and art of improvised theatre, PGraph has held an award-winning weekly show non-stop since 2006. Early on in their time together, Kaci Beeler, Kareem Badr, Roy Janik, and Valerie Ward knew they wanted to do something different onstage. Intrigued by the challenge of telling fantastic fully-improvised stories together as an ensemble, PGraph spent years developing original formats and studying the art of theatre, improv, and storytelling. They've toured the country and the world performing and teaching their unique brand of improv with ensemble appearances in over 60 cities in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, and the UK. Renowned for their theatricality, playfulness, and hive-mind-like ensemble, their goal with every show is to push both themselves and the art of improvisation to new and dizzying heights while taking the audience along for a joyous ride. The members of PGraph regularly teach, direct, and perform at The Hideout Theatre in Austin, Texas. Their book on narrative improv, "Do It Now", is for sale on their website as well as on Amazon. Check out PGraph.com for more information.

This week on Yes But Why, I had the pleasure of speaking with pianist, composer, and music director, Ammon Taylor. Currently based in Austin, Texas, Ammon Taylor is The Paramount Theatre's Education Music Director and an active member of Austin's theatre community. With a Bachelor of Music in composition from UT Austin, Ammon has been using his background in classical, jazz, and musical theatre to set children's narrative inventions to music with Story Wranglers, and to create scores for improvised musicals on-the-spot with The Hideout Theatre's house shows and troupes. In our conversation, Ammon talks about how music has been part of his life since he was born. He tells me about his obsession with Beethoven at 9 years old and how that developed into playing in angsty rock bands when he was a teen. Ammon tells me about moving out on his own to Seattle and then the world traveling adventures that followed. Later, he went to college at UT for music and we go down the rabbit hole of loving Austin. Then he tells me how he got so well connected in the improvised musical scene and how he is a music director full time now and how wonderful that is. We chat about deep feelings, jazz trios, and wanting to save the world. Support Ammon Taylor by support The Paramount in Austin! And by checking out Ammon's most recent musical project to save the world, Rites of Warming. Yes But Why Podcast is a proud member of the HC Universal Network family of podcasts. This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I showcase my talk with comedian and filmmaker, Jer Moran. Jer Moran is a filmmaker and cartoonist based in Austin, TX. He has written and directed various short films and his work has been shown at the Austin Spotlight Film Festival, Austin Comedy Film Festival, Austin Micro Film Festival, and GELOS Comedy Film Festival. Jer is also a comedian and musical improviser who can be seen at the Hideout Theatre, Fallout Theater, Coldtowne Theater, and the Institution Theater. He performs as one half of the Gothic musical improv duo “House of the Bleeding Chicken” and he is also a member of the Fallout Theatre sketch troupe, “The Floor is Lava.” In our conversation, Jer tells me about his obsession with cartoons as a kid. Jer loves “Rocko's Modern Life” as well as the Hanna Barbera oeuvre. We talk about the artists who have creatively influenced us. Jer names weird and provocative animator, Bill Plympton as one of his inspirations. He also gushes about his love for the movie, “Pig Death Machine,” and its punk rock creators, Jon Moritsugu and Amy Davis. We gab about the craziest performance art pieces we have been a part of and also those we witnessed. Jer shares how he got into performing a form of musical improv he calls “gibberish opera.” Jer and I discuss how it can be lonely to create art. I deeply commiserate with him about how tough it can be to find collaborators that match your level of excitement and dedication. Jer tells me about the films he has created and his method for getting it all done. Support Jer Moran by watching his short films, available via Vimeo. This is another episode in our Artist's Brain series where we interview improvisers and other artists about their creative process. Our guest today had an enormous impact on my (Andrew Pish’s) life, and first, let me set the stage… In 2009, I was an engineering student in my first internship which was at a naval research laboratory in Austin, TX. My desk was directly across the hall from a door that had a sign that said “TOP SECRET” in big bold letters. The door also had a keypad with a code to get in. Scientists and engineers would quickly type in the secret code, rush in, and shut the door before I could lay my eyes on all those sweet, dark, naval secrets. This is the place where I began to have doubts that engineering was the right career path for me, and this is when, while I was checking my Gmail, I saw an ad for improv classes at the Hideout Theatre. That was the start of a journey that forever changed my life. Enter our guest, Roy Janik, one of the owners of the Hideout Theatre and a member of the 16-year-old and internationally-renowned improvised theater company Parallelogramophonograph, or PGraph for short. Roy and PGraph were major influences on the narrative improv scene in Austin, TX when I started improvising, and he was my first improv team's coach. As you'll hear, Roy is a complete delight - positive and warm and insightful, and that's the character of improv that hooked me for life. On this episode, we talked about the realities of being an improv theater owner, his narrative improv influences, lessons we all can take from narrative improv, how virtual improv can connect us with the international improv community (which has a lot we could learn from), and his book that he wrote with PGraph on narrative improv called Do It Now: Essays on Narrative Improv. If you want to connect with Roy you can find him on Instagram @royjanik and you can find more about PGraph on their website www.pgraph.com where you can also order a copy of their book called Do It Now: Essays on Narrative Improv. It is jam-packed full of great insights and lessons to take into your improv. Also, if you're in Austin, TX when the world opens back up, please check out the Hideout Theatre downtown, it's the place where I started improvising and I couldn't recommend it enough. The Hideout also has a twitch channel at twitch.tv/hideouttheatre where you can see Roy as well as a bunch of other hilarious improvisers perform. You can also see Stormchaser perform live on facebook.com/stormchaserimprov. For show times and other fun bits from the podcast connect with us on Instagram @stormchaserimprov. And before you go, if you’ve enjoyed the podcast, could you please leave us a bright, glowing, eloquent review on Apple Podcasts? We'd really appreciate it. KTHXBYE.

It’s our tenth episode and what better way to celebrate than by talking to local heartthrob Cass Gutierrez! Coincidentally, Cass and one of our producers go WAY back… as in... they used to be fellow baristas when they were sexually confused teens. Cass discusses being queer in the navy, moving back to Austin following a divorce, her wonderful new girlfriend, and why Starbucks can be a hot, hot place. We don’t want to spoil the juicy twists and turns of the musical portion, so just know that it features a one-person duet, a naval ship, BDSM-inspired consent, and baristas with big dreams! See Cass's show, Queering The Sequel, this August at the Hideout Theatre. It's all about making movie sequels that are... gayer! The Big Gay Musical Podcast is produced by Tosin Awofeso, Chelsea Beth, Bridget Brewer, Marissa Macy and Ammon Taylor. This episode features the improvisational talent of: Chelsea Beth, Trent Thomson, Casey Marie, Marissa Macy and Cass Gutierrez. Follow us on Instagram -- @biggaymusical

On this week’s episode, we talk to the magnificent Sophia Poitier: a creative, a thinker, a parent, a performer, a badass genderqueer visionary. Sophia shares her thoughts about alien-inspired gender expression, being a queer parent, how much people love to “mom” you, and even a few nuggets on navigating the healthcare system (hint: it sucks)! Then woah nelly… stay tuned for an improvised musical about a teenager named Amelia and her personified body as they traverse an alien world, take a ride on a literal struggle bus, and step into the reflection zone. Grab your box of tissues, because we’re bringing you the full spectrum of emotion via equal parts goofy UFO jokes and heart-wrenching duets about loving yourself and your body. Watch Sophia perform in The Hideout Theatre’s Dystopian Teen Future, Saturdays in June! The Big Gay Musical Podcast is produced by Tosin Awofeso, Chelsea Beth, Bridget Brewer, Marissa Macy and Ammon Taylor. That's Rose. Actor, improvisor, instructor at the Hideout Theatre, communications professional, and beacon of positivity. Rose joined us to talk about her full, happy life, telenovelas, and nurturing participation in everyone she meets.
This week we're joined by improviser Chuy Zarate, who participated with both of us in this past weekend's 48-hour improv marathon at the Hideout Theatre to raise money to help provide theater classes for special needs kids and those who would not be able to afford it otherwise. (You can still contribute here: https://www.gofundme.com/2018improvmarathon ) We spend the majority of the time debriefing, but as always, we swing back and forth between crazy silly and super real. Chris talks to Roy Janik of the Hideout Theatre and Parallelogramophonograph about having a playful and adventurous spirit.
After we record Destination, we chat to the improvisers that made the episode with us. It's not a chat about improvisation, but about the real life stories, journeys and opinions making the show inspired or reminded us of. We loved these chats so much that we made a 15 minute supplemental show called Arrival, so that you can listen too. This episode of Arrival is the sister show to Big Bend which was recorded in Austin, Texas at the Hideout Theatre with Quinn Buckner, Heather Hasselle, Kareem Badr, Aspen Webster, Tony Harris and Katy Schutte. Arrival was created and produced by Katy Schutte and Tony Harris.
Tom is driving to the dessert to get a break from his dodgeball team, to distance himself from a woman and to break up with his sofa. With Quinn Buckner, Heather Hasselle, Aspen Webster, Kareem Badr, Katy Schutte & Tony Harris. Recorded at the Hideout Theatre, Austin, Texas.
