Ah, the chaos of our Writing Sessions! This episode kicks off with a behind-the-scenes look at the madness that fuels our creativity. We reminisce about the 80s, laugh over iconic scenes from, "Revenge of the Nerds," and even debate Buddy Holly's middle finger. Our personal stories take center stage, from wild all-night parties to hilarious mishaps with our cats, and we bond over our shared disdain for strip clubs. And don't miss the uproarious tale of a friend who got way too high on pot brownies during a Red Sox-Yankees game. Switching gears, we take a quirky detour into the world of left-handed people, exploring historical and psychological quirks that set them apart. This leads to a spirited argument about candy corn and black licorice that you won't want to miss. Alongside our candy debates, we dive into Halloween nostalgia, celebrating the new Carmella Creeper cereal and reminiscing about classics like Boo Berry and Count Chocula. These conversations blend into our culinary struggles, where we tackle the woes of sensitive stomachs and the absurdity of extreme spice tolerance, sharing hilarious encounters with everything from mild foods to spicy ramen. Our segment on spicy foods includes shout-outs to, "Hot Ones," and personal stories that will have you in stitches. As the episode winds down, we confront creepy-crawly fears, recount playful pranks, and brainstorm a new doll character with a tragic backstory. And let's not forget our lively debate on the timeless allure of actresses over 70. Sophia Loren and Linda Carter, anyone? Tune in for a blend of humor, nostalgia, and unexpected twists! A little while ago Sam Stafford was approached by the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC), the professional membership body for clerks to town, parish and community councils across England and Wales, about contributing to an episode of their podcast. Sam subsequently met Shelley Parker, Linda Carter and Andrew Towlerton at Factory Studios in Bristol in April 2023 for a discussion largely focussed on how parish councils and the development industry can work better together. Shelley, who chaired the discussion, is the SLCC's external affairs and policy development manager; Linda is currently SLCC president; and Andrew is the SLCC's national planning advisor. The conversation, which hopefully busts some myths along the way, touches on the role of the clerk, the role of the ward councillor, localism, the then recent NPPF consultation, the management of public open space, affordable housing and community land trusts.    The SLCC has already shared the recording via it's podcast, but Sam said that he would share it via the 50 Shades platform as well. 50 Shades of Planning is the podcast by planners and for planners so if you would like to use it as a platform for sharing anything that needs talking about then do please feel free to get in touch with Sam at samstafford@hotmail.com or via @samuel_stafford on Twitter. Was there ever life on Mars? Where can your passion for astronomy and cosplaying take you? And what the heck is a Light Sail? To get the answer to these and other questions, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome Sarah Al-Ahmed, host of The Planetary Society's podcast, Planetary Radio. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing: a new ice-filled hole on Mars! Thanks to data from the Mars Insight Lander and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we know now that the disturbance that occurred on Mars on Christmas Eve of 2021 wasn't a marsquake at all, but a meteor strike on the Red Planet. And the ice didn't originate on the surface, but was kicked up by the impact. And now that we've arrived at Mars, we might as well dive in. Sarah talks about the value of staged investigations of Mars, and why we shouldn't send humans to Mars just yet. (Can you say contamination?) The conversation quickly turns to whether humans should colonize Mars, or explore it, at least at first. For our initial student question, Anthony asks Sarah, “What date would you expect Mars to be habitable?” which we take to mean either, when was it habitable, if at all, and also, when will it be habitable? Sarah talks about the samples and science we've done with Curiosity, Perseverance and other missions to Mars, which point to Mars having been habitable 2-3 billion years ago, before some catastrophic change caused it to lose its atmosphere. As to the future? Sarah optimistically predicts we could have humans living in small-scale habitats within a hundred years, but it's unlikely that we could ever make the whole planet habitable again. Moving on, Chuck asks Sarah about her career. She talks about getting her degree in astrophysics at UC Berkeley, operating a telescope at Lick Observatory, and working with – and learning from – Alex Filippenko, noted astronomer and one of the leading scientists involved in figuring out the amount of dark energy in the universe. She followed her passion to the Griffith Observatory, where she spent 6 years sharing her love of astronomy with people of all ages from all over the world at the world's most-looked-through telescope. Thanks to its location in Los Angeles, the Observatory is also one of the most frequently depicted in TV, and Chuck and Sarah swap stories about its appearance in Wonder Woman (the Linda Carter series) and Star Trek Voyager. Sarah also shares another aspect of her geekdom: she's a gamer and a cosplayer! She shows off the Razor Kitty Kraken 2 headphones and Carina Nebula JWST-image dress she's wearing (sorry podcast listeners – they're really cool!) and talks about how she “recharges her happiness batteries” by going to cons and cosplaying. Convention name dropping and Doctor Who citing ensues – and of course Chuck talks about The LIUniverse's deep ties to New York Comic Con. Check out our two live Science of Sci-Fi panels from 2021 and 2022. Next, it's time for our second student question, from a different Anthony: “How does astronomy impact you as a person or the way you look at life?” Sarah's answer is so powerful and empowering, we wouldn't dream of spoiling it here – watch or listen for yourself! (Chuck's response is pretty cool, too.) Finally, Sarah talks about her gig at The Planetary Society, where she now hosts their Planetary Radio podcast, and all of the cool projects that are coming to fruition. You'll learn about their new Member Community Digital App and the new Planetary Academy membership program for kids 9 and younger. Chuck and Sarah discuss the importance of The Planetary Society and its legacy. (For those of you who don't know, Carl Sagan was one of its co-founders, and their current CEO is Bill Nye the Science Guy.) And you'll find out about the Society's Near-Earth Asteroid Scout mission, a solar sail cubesat that was launched on the recent Artemis 1 mission and is designed for asteroid detection and planetary defense. Sarah also gives us an update on the Society's Light Sail 1 and Light Sail 2, the first fully crowdfunded space mission in history. If you'd like to know more about Sarah and The Planetary Society, visit planetary.org. You can find Planetary Radio wherever you get your podcasts, or on Twitter @planrad, where Sarah will be tweeting. We hope you enjoy this episode of The LIUniverse, and, if you do, please support us on Patreon. This show will feature host Teresa Palacios Smith as she interviews women across the industry making change and success a reality.  Make sure to subscribe to be notified of upcoming episodes, and leave a rating and review as you hear the exciting and thought-provoking stories they share. (If you're a listener of Teresa's bi-weekly Facebook livestreams, you'll love the podcast.) Some quick background of Teresa: With a family from Colombia, Teresa interviews each top leader with a cup of coffee in hand. Because that cup of coffee is how her family breaks bread and shares time together. As the Chief Officer of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Home Services of America, a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate Teresa represents 75,000 agents and 64 employees across the country. She loves her role and her opportunity to engage with female leaders. It's by seeing women in powerful positions that encourages other women to follow suit. One of Teresa's greatest inspiration? Wonder Woman. As a young girl, Teresa's mother suffered from a heart condition that ultimately led to her death.  While in the hospital with her, Teresa picked up a magazine with Linda Carter on the cover. Carter, who starred as Wonder Woman, was a Latina like her.  Reading about her and the obstacles she overcame inspired her to help Teresa through tough times. When women support each other, incredible things happen. Teresa wants to inspire women to pursue opportunities and leadership positions, whether inside or outside the real estate industry.  Beginning Feb. 16th, episodes of Women Who Lead will air twice each month. Karla's nod to Claremont's run What is Seren's current obsession? Who are Rey's other favourite female super heroes? What Seren thinks of horses' smarts... THIS EPISODE'S DISCUSSION - Spider-Woman Vol. 7 #17 - ‘Shoot out at the Oh No Corral' Released November 17th, 2021 Written by Karla Pacheco Drawn by Pere Perez Colours by Frank D'Armata Letters by VC's Travis Lanham Cover: Junggeon Yoon,  Variants by Pere Perez & Frank D'Armata Production Designer: Anthony Gambino Editors: Lindsay Cohick, Nick Lowe SYNOPSIS (Courtesy of Wiki): At the East Harlem clinic of Linda Carter, Linda tells a frustrated Jess that she is delaying her full recovery by moving her broken arm too much, and cannot use her powers until it is healed or risk further bracing in a cast. Begrudgingly agreeing to doctor's orders, Jess asks Linda to baby sit Gerry while she visits Lindsey working as a stuntwoman for film star, Stevie Ciconia, claiming herself a Spider-Woman fan and requesting the heroine visit. There, while bemused by other film projects, Spider-Woman meets Stevie who wanted to know if she could get in touch with the Avengers to help with free press on Stevie's film. Heading to the set of the next scene, Jess hangs with stunt coordinator Gunnar, who shows Jess the sequence just before it is carried out by Lindsey. Seeing Lindsey finish and be cleaned off of her flame retardant stunt layers, the set is attacked by actual ninjas sent for Lindsey by Madripoor gangster, Mack Duffin. Unable to use her Venom Blasts due to her broken arm, Spider-Woman is forced into melee combat with the ninjas, then asks Lindsey if she's a good mother. While Lindsey believes her to be so, Spider-Woman feels as though she has been shifting her responsibilities to be more active as a superhero. Taking down the last ninja, Jess finds that Gunnar was filming their fight and was interested in getting her to do more stunt work, to which Jess politely refuses. With the stunt team tying down the ninjas for the NYPD to take into custody, Stevie tries again to get the Avengers for her PR by brown-nosing Spider-Woman, who promises the actress's name will come up when next she talks with the Avengers. As the Ninjas are taken away, Jess voices concern for Lindsey's wellbeing while also adamant on talking about her taking money from gangsters from Madripoor. Wanting to talk after getting cleaned, Lindsey directs Jess to the craft services table where she pends the following 20 minutes eating up. However, upon her return to Lindsey's trailer, Jess is shocked to find it ransacked and the message "This is all your fault, Jessica Drew!" on the mirror. Jess questioning what the hell is happening. Needless to say, this is another winner with Karla and Pere just upping their game each and every issue!...Not to be missed!.....(the comic I mean....then, y'know...please give us a listen)... VENOM BLASTS (things to look out for in episode)!! Rustin's code name for Rebecca (sorry, Rustin...had to do it! :P) Rey's artsy fartsy comments on panel layouts! Seren's solid notes as ever! How Rose has affected us all! THIS EPISODE'S DISCUSSION - Spider-Woman Vol. 7 #16 Released October 27th, 2021 Written by Karla Pacheco Drawn by Pere Perez Colours by Frank D'Armata Letters by VC's Clayton Cowles (Apparently Travis Lanham was on vacation) Cover: Junggeon Yoon, Variants by Nabetse Zitro and Morry Hollowell, and Rob Liefeld Production Designer: Anthony Gambino Editors: Lindsay Cohick, Nick Lowe SYNOPSIS (Courtesy of Wiki): While Rebecca practices to get familiar with her combat suit, Jess voices to Lindsey her reservations on letting her niece go into a superhuman fight. So on Lindsey's advice, Jess talks with Rebecca and, seeing her determination and physical capability, begrudgingly agrees to bring her into the fray. Later, Rebecca directs Jess to help infiltrate her dad's company again to retrieve "backup" and the topic also brings up the cure for her condition, which Rebecca refuses to take. Entering the break room, Rebecca destroys a pool table and breaks into a safe to vent her frustrations on her father's easy manipulation by Rose, even though Jess tries rationalizing Michael's steadfast obsession to finding a cure. But once Rebecca finds what she was after, Rose and Michael enter the room, with Michael's monologuing on Rebecca becoming "normal" is clear that Rose is leading him. An enraged Rebecca attacks both of them out the window, falling past the windows of a residential building as Jess tries to communicate the need to not endanger civilians while also learning Michael has organic web-shooters because the male Latrodectus Aeternum spin webs, and she's miffed at not having that ability. At ground level, Jess tries to get Rebecca to think, but Rebecca's immediate comment leads her to realize that she wasn't truly prepared, even blaming herself for events thinking that none of Rose's manipulations would have occurred had she just been cured. After hugging and one bad joke later, Jess and Rebecca move to confront Rose and Aeternum. Elsewhere, Rose is on her cell calling for a trace when a momentarily clear-minded Michael asks if she did try to kill Rebecca. When Rose dodges with a question, Michael gets aggressive and both are soon found by Jess and Rebecca, leading to Jess fighting Michael while Rebecca fights Rose. But while Jess tries to reason that Michael stop to help Rebecca instead of controlling what he thinks is best for her, Michael takes Jess over the ledge just as Rose overpowers Rebecca in their fight. Michael breaks Jess's arm once they hit the street below, threatening to break more as he is stronger. With Rose distracted by Michael fighting Jess, Rebecca sneakattacks Rose to inject her with what she took from the safe, making a Wicked Witch joke as they plummet. Remembering her time on the serum, Jess entraps Michael in a close quarters maneuver to use her suit's ability to discharge concentrated Venom Blast through Michael's body. On the street below, Rebecca finds her father burnt by Jess's Venom Blast but alive, as Jess sees Rose seemingly aged into a quinquagenarian. Rebecca reveals she was injected with the "flu shot" that was used to disable Jess's radiation immunity powers a while back; Michael told her where to find it in case of emergencies, the irony not lost on them finding a greater effect on Rose than on Jess. But as Jess has Avengers connections to rehabilitate them, she lets Rebecca choose and she chose to leave enough money in Michael's personal funds for them to leave town, threatening to stop them should they ever return for Jess or Gerry. As Michael departs after a tearful goodbye, Jess gives Rebecca a shoulder to cry on while heading to Linda Carter's for treatment. After what they went through, Rebecca makes no plans to be a superhero and aims to run the company to repair whatever damages Michael might have made in his obsession to fix her condition, and also invites Jess to play shortstop for the company softball team. We discuss the groundbreaking film, Wonder Woman. Before she ever found herself in a twirling transition from Diana Prince to Wonder Woman (ala Linda Carter) she forever changed the face of the comic book medium. She challenged the notion that comics were merely for boys. Over her tenure in the medium, she has evolved to other mediums as well including television, cartoons, toys and more. Gal Gadot’s big screen debut with the character offered up something new for the DCEU and comic book movies as whole. In our penultimate, Road to Snyder Cut episode, we’re going back to the beginning of the DCEU as we know it with Kate Webster, a teacher and Wonder Woman superfan to disucss the first solo outing of Diana to the world of man. Refocusing on the invasion, nobody can touch a Symbiote dragon except Jess and Iron Fist due to their energy abilities. Carol called on them for backup to focus on the creatures in their area, as Carol is needed to go around and fight the overwhelming force of symbiote monsters. Jess takes some of Linda's injections of Marchand serum for a boost despite other objections, and overwhelms the dragon as her venom blast is poisonous to the creature. Jess loses herself in a berserker rage attacking the dragon's corpse until Carol has to pull her away, escalating into a brawl. With Jess blaming Carol for losing her lead to Wyndham, ignoring Carol actual help and offering resources, Danny steps in to fight Jess until Carol takes the opportunity to stun her.   Called back into action, Carol leaves Jess in Linda's Clinic basement kept in a Hulk Tank until the serum wears off. After Carol shatters the last vial of serum, Jess rages out of her shackles, but being unable to break the glass instead derides Carol's want of and inability to have children; hurting her friend deeply. Remembering Jess' words that it wasn't safe to be around her loved ones, Carol sees now that she was right, so she and the others take their leave with the intent to release Jess after her serum high quells and Knull is defeated. After going through the early stages of withdraw, Jess is surprised to see Octavia Vermis alive and offering to help due to their having "more in common" than originally believed.   Remember -   To Know Her Is To Fear Her!   Enjoy!   SHOW NOTES: Spider-Woman Vol. 7, issue #7 Captain Marvel - The End Hawkeye - FreeFall If you love the issues, tell Marvel at mheroes@marvel.com !   WHERE TO HEAR US:   Podcast Page Apple Podcasts Spotify Stitcher Google Podcasts To Know Her Is To Fear Her RSS Feed DROP US A LINE: Podcast Page: http://spiderwomanpod.libsyn.com Email: spiderwomanpod@gmail.com FB Page: To Know Her Is To Fear Her - The Spider-Woman Podcast Page Twitter: @spiderwomndaily Instagram: To Know Her Is To Fear Her Tumblr: To Know Her Is To Fear Her Come join us on Discord - Watch Parties and other fun stuff! In this episode of Parallel Fiction, Heather and Jeff celebrate Reflection!  With 2020 finally over, its time to look towards the future.  Jeff and Heather share two stories where taking a look back can help you thrive moving forward.  Heather starts the summary section off with her coverage of Wonder Woman 1984 (WW84), the newest super hero movie by director Patty Jenkins.  WW84 picks up decades after the original, which was set during World War 1.  Heather discusses the life lesson Diana must learn from the scenes of her as a young child in the beginning – “No true hero is born from lies”.  Did you know?  Gal Gadot was pregnant for the majority of the filming of this movie.    Jeff follows up with his first official novel submission; Nick Hornby's 1995 classic High Fidelity.  Dealing with main character Rob Flemming's most agonizing break ups, High Fidelity mixes humor with sophistication and a dab of toxic self-sabotage.  Jeff explains how Rob's journey into his past help him heal in the present, and how fixing your flaws can help you move forward into the future with a new outlook. Fun Fact! John Cusack, who plays Rob in the 2001 film adaptation was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance. Following these reviews, Heather and Jeff dive into commonalities between the two works such as self reflection, mistakes/lessons learned, choices, growth, and goal setting.  They also discuss times in their lives where a good period of reflection has enriched their own lives. Listen in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how Wonder Woman 1984 &High Fidelity compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate the two. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy! Heather's Rating of Wonder Woman 1984: Nice – Gal Gadot steals the show and is a great role model for women and men alike.  May be confusing for non-comic book fans and the film runs a little long. Jeff's High Fidelity: Very Nice – Some of the characters do not age well, but the writing is very insightful and unique to this writer.  If nothing else, it'll make you want to pick up some vinyl records.  Watch Wonder Woman 1984 here: www.hbomax.comRead High Fidelity:  About Parallel Fiction:Parallel Fiction is the perfect supplemental companion to all of the stories you consume. I must admit to being pretty excited about Wonder Woman.Although I read a lot of comic books when I was younger, I favored Marvel over DC, so everything I know about Wonder Woman came from the TV show starring Linda Carter. It sounds likeWonder Woman might be the best superhero movie so far. Like all superhero movies, Wonder Woman provides an opportunity to do a littlephysics.
