This is a very special live edition of Crafted, recorded in front of an audience at Design Week Portland headquarters at Pioneer Courthouse Square on October 10, 2014.I interviewed Israel Kandarian, Louis Carlton and Joel Ryan Brandon of SET creative, and experiential creative agency.We discussed best in class brands, executing with quality and speed, And feeling fast. We also talked about examples of their work with Nike, Uniqlo, and the Design Week Opening Party.

As Tsilli Pines' profession evolves, she describes herself as less of a designer and more as "the person that gets things done". In the years since moving to Portland, Tsilli has positioned herself as a leader in the Portland design scene, as the host of the Portland chapter of Creative Mornings, Co-Director of Design Week Portland, and Graphic Designer at the creative agency Fine. We discuss the concept of leaving a legacy, its impact on motivation, and the rewards of reaching out to those you admire and respect.

In this episode I talk with Adam Garcia, the Art Director, Designer, and Illustrator behind his studio The Pressure.After studying at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, Adam worked at Rhymesayers, 160over90, and Nike. His expertise includes illustration, event coordination, branding, packaging design. Adam is also an adjunct faculty member at Portland State University and host of the Amazing Stumptown Spelling Bee.We spoke about the winding road to a career and the unforseen benefits and opportunities that arise from being vague. For Kate Bingaman Burt, illustration started out in such more, holding herself accountable for the tens of thousands of dollars of debt she was in. Through her "automated projects", She put illustrations of her credit card statements online, using the entire world as a way of holding yourself accountable. With an acquired taste for illustration, she began her daily drawings, documenting one purchased item my day from February 5, 2006 to February 5th, 2014. One of her projects that struck me most was on the found objects. Free boxes (which pepper the streets of Portland during the summer) exhibit a curious collection of mementos, antiquated media, and things that someone might have a use for. Kate takes note of these things and out of it arise questions of consumerism, preciousness, and personality. What does a book about Freud, an Ugly Betty DVD, and an old towel say about someone? Whatever it is, it makes for an interesting story.  In episode three of the show, Kate discusses growing up in an artistic household, her struggle to pick a major, the people who inspired her, her introduction to the industry, and advice for those with trouble beginning or ending projects. "In terms of applying limitations and restrictions, make it like it's a job. In this inaugural episode of Crafted, I sat down with Adam Arnold to discuss the importance of struggle. Adapting to challenges and being able to overcome limitations in pursuit of goal is what separates hobbyists from those with a seemingly divine purpose. Through struggle, Adam Arnold helped shape the burgeoning fashion scene in Portland in the early 2000s.Adam describes his studio as an extra limb of his. It's an extention of his mind, brought into physical reality through white walls and bricks.“There just isn’t enough time in a life to develop, make, and work on all of the things I want to. That’s why I’m often in my studio. If it weren’t for this place, where I can experiment daily with fit, color, construction, and form, I would surely die unhappy. It is every artistic person’s divine right to have such a place, and I am very grateful to have one. It not only helps in the development of ideas, it is essential to the personal evolution of the soul. ”I interviewed Adam for bePortland in April 2013.
