This episode of the Happiness Hour explores the idea that relying too heavily on one source of happiness can lead to disappointment and unhappiness. Dennis uses examples from his own life and the lives of others to illustrate this point, including a story about a woman who put all her happiness eggs in the marital basket, only to find herself devastated when her husband's love for her waned. He also shares a powerful call from a man who spent 40 years trying to make his wife happy, only to realize that he couldn't, and that true happiness comes from within. In Day 191 of The Ways of the Righteous (Gate of Fear of Heaven), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that while human beings are given dominion over creation, that authority carries responsibility. Animals were created to serve mankind—not because they are unimportant, but because humanity possesses something infinitely greater: an eternal soul. We are commanded to treat animals with compassion and even feed them before ourselves, yet our unique role is to elevate creation through our relationship with Hashem.Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes the extraordinary greatness of the neshamah. Before birth, the soul exists in a realm of perfect spiritual clarity, but at birth it becomes enclosed within a physical body. The crying of a newborn symbolizes the soul's transition from unlimited closeness to Hashem into a world of confusion and physical limitations. Throughout life, the soul longs to return to that closeness, while the body constantly seeks physical gratification. Our task is to allow the soul—not the body—to direct our choices.Using the metaphor of a rider and a horse, Rabbi Wolbe teaches that the neshamah must hold the reins while the body serves merely as its vehicle. The body is necessary to perform mitzvot and acts of kindness, but it must remain subordinate to the soul's higher purpose. When the soul guides the body, every physical action becomes elevated into something eternal. The lesson also explores why Judaism teaches the future resurrection of the dead. Both the soul and the body contribute to a life of righteousness: the soul inspires holiness, while the body performs the mitzvot. Therefore, both ultimately share in the eternal reward when they are reunited in the World to Come. Finally, Rabbi Wolbe explains that the vast universe—the sun, moon, stars, and all of creation—exists not for the temporary body but for the eternal soul. Every aspect of creation is designed to inspire us to recognize Hashem's greatness and draw closer to Him. The purpose of enjoying this world is not indulgence but elevation: to use every blessing Hashem gives us as a means of strengthening our relationship with Him._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on February 23, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 14, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Darren Grimes and Graham Dunlop launch their new Grimoire platform, a global book club built around 250 plus professionally narrated audiobooks, lunar-cycle book picks, and community participation. They also demo a new online Pegs and Jokers game, whil e walking through the shelves of the library and explaining how free access, founder memberships, and the inner sanctum work. https://pegsandjokers.ca/ https://www.skool.com/the-secret-teachings-book-club-1875 In this episode, Darren and Graham cover the launch setup, the membership model, and the structure of the new book club. They also preview the first book of the month, discuss how the shelves are organized, and share the thinking behind the game and the community features. Key topics In this episode: the Grimoire launches with more than 250 audiobooks, with the library expected to grow to around 260 soon. The free book of the month is The Secret Teachings of All Ages in an abridged edition, chosen because starting with the full 36 hour version would be too much for most listeners. Founder keeper and monthly initiate memberships unlock the full library, while the free tier gives access to the monthly featured book and community activity. The book club is organized around lunar cycles, with a new moon monthly pick and a full moon live read, creating a rhythm of one book per moon month. The community model includes chapter check-ins, passage discussions, Friday tangents, and a final live book council in the last week of each book month. Darren and Graham describe the inner sanctum as a deeper, earned area of the platform, accessible through participation rather than payment alone. The shelves span Hermetica and occult, theosophy, mysticism east and west, Atlantis and Fortiana, mind and prosperity, weird fiction, philosophy and classics, magic, and power and propaganda. They highlight standout titles such as The Purple Cloud, The Machine Stops, Atlantis by Ignatius Donnelly, The Book of Thoth, Psychic Self-Defense, The Power of Positive Thinking, and The Road to Serfdom. Graham demos Pegs and Jokers, explaining how the online version works, how the cards move pieces, and why it is meant to be played with friends and family across locations. They mention the platform is still being cleaned up and reorganized, including moving some books between shelves and adding PDFs and other support material. When Americans think about the Declaration of Independence, we tend to remember its most famous words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” and its promise of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” But to fully understand the Declaration we also need to read the section most Americans skip: its 27 grievances against King George III. For the founding generation, these grievances were not simply a list of complaints. They were central to the Declaration's argument, laying out the case for how the King and Parliament had violated their rights and why independence had become necessary. Historian Rosemarie Zagarri explores what the grievances meant in 1776, what they reveal about the colonists' understanding of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and how reading them more closely can deepen our understanding of the Declaration as a constitutional argument and a justification for revolution. Julie Silverbrook, chief content and learning officer at the National Constitution Center, moderates. The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com Garth Heckman Joy Unshakeable Acts 16 Paul and Silas Read story and highlight: Military city, MOB RULES:did not want to hear what they had to say… the crowd was blind with rage… they should not have been beaten until trial as Roman citizens. *Joy starts with focus not feelings. Happiness depends on what happens… so you have to do the work to make good things happen. *YOU BECOME A SLAVE TO PERFORMING, AND CIRCUMSTANCES. Falsely accused (Emotionally abused), Beaten (Physically abused in public to humiliate) Locked away from everyone in the deepest part of the dungeon… Most likely where the raw sewage flowed. (Socially abused) Chained (Mentally abused and in stocks) Archaeological evidence from sites like the gladiator barracks at Pompeii - torture racks. **AND AT MIDNIGHT: Why Midnight Singing Is Even More Remarkable Than It First Appears Put the whole picture together: Paul and Silas had been publicly stripped, beaten with rods by state lictors, thrown into the inner prison (the most secure, likely darkest and most miserable section), and their legs forced into a device specifically designed to maximize ongoing physical suffering. And at midnight — the point of deepest exhaustion and vulnerability — "they were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them" (v. 25). THESE WERE NOT QUIET MURMURINGS - The Greek word for "singing hymns" here is hymneō — the same root behind our English "hymn" — meaning they weren't just murmuring quiet comfort to themselves; they were audibly, deliberately worshiping, loud enough that the entire prison population was listening. **Look at all that is HAPPENING to them. Happiness is based on what Happens. It is called “happenstance”. But Spiritually they still knew where they stood. They still experienced joy. *Joy starts with focus not feelings. Happiness depends on what happens… so you have to do the work to make good things happen. *YOU BECOME A SLAVE TO PERFORMING, AND CIRCUMSTANCES. Vs. joy which focuses on the outcome not the current circumstances. Joy is best served with friends. Go to an amusement park with no one??? Why? Isolation kills joy Your joy affects others Are you the one who people love to see walk into a room? The joy experienced by Paul and Silas freed the other prisoners. Joy preceded their deliverance They did not rejoice because they were free - they rejoiced and that is what freed them!
In Day 190 of The Ways of the Righteous (Gate of Fear of Heaven), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues exploring the three dimensions of the human soul: the nefesh, ruach, and neshamah. While animals possess the drives of the nefesh and ruach, only human beings are endowed with the neshamah—the uniquely Divine intellect that enables us to discern truth from falsehood, develop wisdom, and elevate ourselves spiritually. Unlike the physical body, the wisdom acquired by the neshamah accompanies a person beyond this world. The central message of the lesson is that our lives are shaped by whichever part of ourselves we choose to nourish. Rabbi Wolbe compares the neshamah to a vacuum cleaner that is constantly searching to be filled. If we fail to satisfy it with holiness, Torah, mitzvot, and acts of kindness, it will desperately seek fulfillment elsewhere through material pursuits that can never truly satisfy. Wealth, pleasure, fame, and possessions may entertain the body, but only closeness to Hashem nourishes the soul.Rabbi Wolbe also explains that although the neshamah originates in the intellect, its goal is to transform the heart. The heart is the source of both positive and negative inclinations, and every person chooses which side to strengthen. By allowing the mind and the neshamah to guide the heart, a person redirects powerful emotions and desires toward holiness rather than selfish gratification. The same passion that can drive destructive behavior can also become the engine for tremendous righteousness. Finally, the lesson teaches that wisdom is the key to understanding both the physical and spiritual worlds. Torah enables a person to distinguish between what merely appears attractive and what genuinely brings eternal value. Every advancement, talent, and technology can be used either for holiness or for destruction. The responsibility lies with us to allow our neshamah to lead our choices so that, when we ultimately stand before Hashem, we can answer that we invested our lives in what truly mattered._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on February 23, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 13, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! What if you could achieve a life full of happiness, security, and success while also enjoying the ride? My guest today tells us exactly how to do just that by throwing out your detailed 5 year plan (yes, really) for this new approach instead. Anne-Laure Le Cunff is a top neuroscientist, entrepreneur, and best-selling author. After reading her amazing book, I had to have her on the podcast and share her approach with you all.
In this lesson from the Gate of Fear of Heaven (Shaar Yirat Shamayim), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the deeper structure of the human soul through the concepts of nefesh, ruach, and neshamah. Drawing from the teachings of Orchot Tzaddikim, he explains that the nefesh is associated with physical desire, the ruach with emotion, honor, and ego, and the neshamah with the intellect and our highest spiritual aspirations. These three forces operate simultaneously within every person, creating the lifelong struggle between immediate physical gratification and the soul's desire for closeness to Hashem.Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that reality extends far beyond what our physical eyes can perceive. Spiritual causes and consequences may exist even when they are hidden from us. Through a story involving a businessman who sought guidance from a Kabbalistic sage, he illustrates the Torah perspective that our spiritual choices can influence aspects of life in ways that are not visible on the surface. The broader lesson is that Judaism asks us to look beyond the purely material world and recognize that our actions affect both the physical and spiritual dimensions of existence. The lesson then focuses on the central battle between intellect and emotion. The heart may crave what feels pleasurable in the moment, even when the mind knows that the choice is harmful. Rabbi Wolbe uses the example of someone warned by a doctor to avoid unhealthy food who nevertheless places himself in a tempting environment and gradually rationalizes giving in. Spiritual maturity requires training the mind to govern the heart rather than allowing emotions and impulses to dictate our choices.Rabbi Wolbe concludes by describing life as an ongoing contest between the physical forces that pursue pleasure, wealth, honor, and comfort and the neshamah that continually asks a deeper question: What will bring me closer to Hashem? Whichever side we strengthen becomes more powerful. When physical desires dominate, spiritual sensitivity weakens. When the neshamah leads, humility, wisdom, and closeness to God flourish. The struggle itself is the purpose of life—and every choice gives us another opportunity to allow the highest part of ourselves to lead._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on February 23, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 12, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Lee Woodruff's life reads like fiction — a college meet-not-quite-cute with her future husband Bob, a front-row seat to the Tiananmen Square crackdown that redirected Bob's entire career, his meteoric rise to co-anchor of ABC's World News Tonight, and then, just weeks into that dream job, a roadside bomb in Iraq that nearly killed him. In this conversation, Lee shares how she got the call while at Disney World with their four kids, the surreal days that followed, and the 36-day coma that ended with Bob speaking Mandarin and French before he could speak English again. She opens up about "ambiguous loss" — the complicated grief of loving someone who survived but changed — and the "four F's" (family, friends, funny, faith) that got her through. Lee also talks candidly about the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which has now raised more than $80 million for veterans and military families, and about her own definition of optimism: not the absence of hard days, but the belief that tomorrow can be better. In this episode of Case Studies, the tables turn. Casey sits in the guest chair for the first time in 150 episodes, interviewed by his friend, Dan Snow. Casey opens up about building equity in Vivint before its sale to Blackstone at age 27, his late-in-life ADHD diagnosis, and the morning rituals, cold plunges, and Harvard executive education that keep him grounded. The conversation moves through faith, fatherhood, and the myth of the overnight success. Drawing on lessons from 150 interviews, Casey argues that success is never linear; it's messy, and that's what makes it human. He reflects on money as a magnifier, the difference between character and competency, and why progress, not comfort, equals happiness. Casey also speaks candidly about his marriage to Chelsea Baugh, twenty-two years of deliberate work behind a partnership that looks effortless from the outside. It's an unusually personal conversation about identity, discipline, and what it actually takes to build a life worth admiring.[00:00] Money as a Magnifier[01:22] Turning the Mirror on Casey[02:25] Why He Asks About Childhood[03:46] Discovering His ADHD[06:21] Dropping the H-Bomb[07:56] From Door-to-Door to Financial Independence[09:58] Early Wins That Built Confidence[15:00] Building the Morning Rituals[16:15] Cold Plunge as Courage Practice[20:41] Success Is Never Linear[32:23] Getting Hit in the Eye[38:30] Circle of Control vs. Concern[44:27] Advice for a Newly Rich 27-Year-OldThe information in this communication is provided for informational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice, a recommendation, or a solicitation to invest in any fund or security. This weekend's theme on "The Way" is "Before the Fall, I AM", and in this opening session, Jason Warwick leads a powerful 'Levels of Mind' session. The episode begins by emphasizing the importance of true heart expansion—using a striking metaphor of running toward thunder and dissolving into the light to demonstrate who we are before the separation. During the session, Jason helps a participant named Tanya explore her feelings of being trapped, powerless, and afraid due to her current living situation. Tanya shares that she has been trying to sell or rent her house, but feels stuck and deeply disturbed by her neighbor's dog barking all day. Through their dialogue, Jason helps her uncover deeper beliefs tied to this situation, including a profound sense of guilt and the subconscious thought that she is being punished. By guiding Tanya through these layers, Jason demonstrates how the 'Levels of Mind' worksheet can serve as a tool to release these deeply held beliefs and choose peace over worldly attachments. To further illustrate this process of letting go, Jason brings on Juli, a community member who shares her own experience of selling a business in Australia. Juli discusses the guilt, unworthiness, and resistance she faced when trying to negotiate a fair price with her ex-partner. She explains how she eventually surrendered the outcome to the Holy Spirit, which not only allowed the sale to unfold easily but also freed her mind to uncover even deeper beliefs. Through these real-life examples, this episode offers profound insights into how we can navigate our own challenges by prioritizing peace of mind and trusting in divine guidance. In this episode, Dr. Hotze discusses the parasite Cyclospora, explaining what it is, how it is transmitted, and why he believes the public response has been disproportionate to the number of reported cases. He reviews where the organism is commonly found, how infections occur through contaminated food or water, and the typical symptoms associated with the illness, including diarrhea and gastrointestinal discomfort. Based on the information presented, Dr. Hotze emphasizes that most cases are treatable and encourages listeners to keep the reported numbers in perspective. He also discusses basic food safety practices, such as thoroughly washing fresh produce before eating it. The episode concludes with practical recommendations for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including continuing to eat fresh vegetables while properly washing produce, staying informed about health issues, and focusing on long-term wellness strategies. Remember the old hotel ice machines? The kind where you'd slide your bucket under the chute and hear the avalanche of cubes crashing into it? There was something so fun and strangely gratifying about that thing.Or think about breaking an icicle off the edge of a roof. Such a gratifying feeling from such a small act.My guest has written an ode to the outsized pleasures that arise from these kinds of everyday interactions with the physical world. His name is Ian Bogost, and his new book is The Small Stuff. Today on the show, Ian argues that a fulfilling life isn't built solely by chasing the big components of happiness but also by embracing the small moments of gratification that are woven throughout ordinary life. We discuss how those moments can be found in tactile experiences like shifting a manual transmission, turning a well-made knob, or flipping through the pages of a real menu. We explore how these small opportunities for engagement — for contact, connection, and control— have been disappearing as the world becomes more digitized and automated and everything becomes a touchscreen. And Ian shares how opportunities for "sensory enchantment" can still be found in our increasingly dematerialized world.Resources Related to the PodcastIan's previous appearance on the AoM Podcast: Episode #247 — The Pleasure of Limits, the Uses of Boredom, and the Antidote to Excessive IronyIan's Atlantic article "The End of Manual Transmission"Andy Rooney compilationConnect With Ian BogostThe Small Stuff websiteIan's websiteIan's faculty page0:00 Introduction0:40 Ian Bogost and 'The Small Stuff'2:25 What Kickstarted This Book6:38 Happiness, Satisfaction, and Gratification14:58 Gratification Is Everywhere — But Disappearing18:28 Dematerialization: How the World Is Losing Sensory Richness26:41 How Work Has Become Less Gratifying33:09 How to Reclaim Your Sensory Life38:35 Keep More Junk Around44:38 Talk About Small Pleasures48:17 Living Life Sideways (Orthogonality)50:03 Wrap-UpSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

When I was a personal trainer, one of my favorite techniques was to ask clients to do the exact opposite of their habitual movement pattern. Not because the opposite was right. It obviously was not. But because the experience of the extreme helped them find the middle. The most functional place was almost always somewhere between the two. And they could not find it until they had felt what was on the other side of their habit. In this episode I take that principle far beyond physical training and apply it to how we live. What are the things you do every day so automatically you have stopped noticing them? What would the opposite feel like? I share my own practice of slowing way down, which is the direct opposite of my natural speed, and what I consistently find waiting in that middle ground. Ready to go deeper? On January 18th, 2026, protestors marched into a church building in Saint Paul, Minnesota in the middle of the worship service. They began chanting and disrupting the space, forcing the church ushers to evacuate the children's wing and the congregation. The pastor of that church is Jonathan Parnell. Parnell also serves as the Send Network's City Missionary in the Twin Cities, where he works to encourage fellow pastors and train church planters. He is the author of Mercy for Today: A Daily Prayer from Psalm 51 (2020), Never Settle for Normal: The Proven Path to Significance and Happiness (2017) and coauthor of How to Stay Christian in Seminary (2014). The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com Garth Heckman *Joy starts with focus not feelings. Why? Isolation kills joy
In this lesson from the Gate of Fear of Heaven (Shaar Yirat Shamayim), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues the powerful parable of the royal soul. The human neshamah is compared to the daughter of a king—pure, precious, and lofty—yet placed inside a physical body filled with earthly desires. The body wants comfort, food, pleasure, materialism, and immediate gratification, while the soul longs for holiness and closeness to Hashem. This tension between body and soul is not a defect in creation; it is the very arena in which human greatness is achieved.Rabbi Wolbe explains that our mission is not to reject the physical world, but to elevate it. Physical experiences can become extraordinarily holy when directed properly. He illustrates this through marriage and intimacy: what the outside world may treat as merely physical can, within the sanctity of a Jewish marriage, become one of the holiest expressions of Divine service. Torah awakens the soul to remember its royalty and teaches us not to “sell ourselves cheaply” by living beneath our spiritual dignity. The lesson then turns to the unique privilege and responsibility of the Jewish people. Hashem gave us Torah and mitzvos as the means through which we recognize His greatness, develop Yirat Shamayim, and draw closer to Him. Looking at the heavens, the earth, the sun, moon, and stars can awaken awareness of the Creator—but Torah gives that awareness clarity and direction. Through learning and mitzvah observance, we begin to understand not only that Hashem exists, but what He wants from us.Rabbi Wolbe concludes by describing Yirat Shamayim as Hashem's greatest treasure. Gold, silver, possessions, and worldly success cannot compare to the clarity of knowing our relationship with God. The more we invest in Torah, mitzvos, and Hashem's wisdom, the more we awaken the royal soul within and recognize how privileged we are to live in a personal relationship with the Creator._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on February 16, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 11, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! #159: On today's episode, Han jumps on for a SOLO episode all about discipline: how to build success, why discipline is a skill you can actually develop, and how staying present can completely change the way you view discipline as you approach personal growth, success, and your mental health.Han gets into one of the questions she gets asked most: how do you stay so motivated? The truth is, she doesn't. Motivation comes and goes. But when motivation falters, discipline is something you can learn to rely on.She breaks down why she doesn't believe disciplined people are simply born that way, why discipline is a skill that can be strengthened and flexed over time, and why so much of building discipline comes down to staying present and learning to keep promises to yourself.Han gets into:Why discipline matters more than motivationHow discipline can actually be developed and strengthened over timeWhy consistency often matters more than talent, intelligence, or qualificationBuilding confidence and self-trust by keeping small promises to yourselfWhy the promises you make to yourself don't need to be massive to create meaningful changeCreating consistency through small, low-stakes daily actionsWhy staying present is one of the most important parts of becoming disciplinedHow constantly thinking about where you “should” be can make it harder to take actionThe pressure to be more successful, make more money, feel more healed, or be further along than you areWhy obsessing over the end goal can actually work against your personal growthHow to know where you're going without thinking about the destination every single dayFocusing on what actually moves the needle forward todayHow small, consistent actions compound over timeAdjusting your expectations of what the journey toward success is supposed to look and feel likeLearning to trust yourself and the process even when you can't see immediate resultsSmall ways that Han stays disciplined in her mental health and wellnesss routines & MORE!This episode is for anyone who is struggling to stay consistent, who's procrastinating on taking action, or feeling overwhelmed by how far they still have to go. If you're working toward becoming more successful, mentally well, confident, disciplined, or simply becoming someone you can rely on, this episode is a reminder to know where you're going, come back to today, and trust that what you do consistently will compound over time.CONNECT with HAN:follow Han herefollow HOW I SEE IT herefollow Han on Substack herewatch HOW I SEE IT on YouTube hereshop the podcast merch herework with Han: howhanseesit@gmail.comTIMESTAMPS:00:00 — Discipline, Success & Staying Present00:30 — Welcome Back / Feeling Better01:45 — Why I'm Talking About Discipline02:13 — Motivation vs. Discipline03:15 — Discipline Is a Skill You Can Develop03:35 — Why Consistent Action Creates Success04:15 — Building Confidence by Keeping Small Promises04:43 — Why Success Requires Staying Present05:53 — Stop Living in the “Helicopter View”06:11 — Why Obsessing Over the End Goal Makes Discipline Harder07:20 — Daily Action & the Compound Effect08:07 — Changing Your Expectations of the Journey09:26 — Starting Before You Have Everything Figured Out09:46 — Procrastination, Overthinking & Getting Stuck in the Big Picture11:46 — How I Build Discipline in Business12:44 — Structure, Scheduling & Staying Organized13:55 — The Daily To-Do List & Keeping Promises to Yourself17:04 — Discipline in Mental Health & Therapy18:03 — Discipline With Fitness & Physical Health19:37 — Supplements, Skincare & Everyday Commitments21:40 — The Compound Effect Beyond Money22:50 — Anyone Can Build Discipline24:26 — The Real Key: Showing Up for Yourself24:40 — Why Success Is in the Journey, Not the End Goal25:00 — Applying Discipline to Healing, Happiness & Being Present25:31 — Final Thoughts26:01 — Outro
In this deeply moving episode, David Hoffmeister sits down with Brazilian A Course in Miracles teacher Jeane Mendes to share their amazing and profound encounters with the divine. Together, they explore what it means to experience true revelation and how to navigate the return to the physical world after witnessing pure light. During the conversation, Jeane recounts her extraordinary journey, explaining how she was lying in bed, exhausted from work, and seeking help from Jesus and Mother Mary when she heard the loving voice of God. She explains that this voice gently asked if she would let go of her worldly attachments before she stepped fully into an immensely loving light where she felt all minds were present within her. Similarly, David shares his mystical experiences in Kentucky, detailing a moment deep in the woods where he meditated while gazing into a friend's eyes. He describes how his visual perception of the physical world flattened out like a painting before bright light streamed through his friend's silhouette, eventually causing the physical world to disappear entirely into an unspeakable experience of pure light and love. Beyond the moments of revelation, the two teachers discuss the sudden relapses into unconscious guilt or deep sadness that can often follow when returning to the ego's thought system. To navigate this reentry, they provide insights on using forgiveness and trust in the Holy Spirit to release worldly attachments. By letting go of the need to control finances, diets, or relationships, they explain how one can live freely in the world without experiencing this spiritual surrender as a sacrifice. What if feeling better isn't always about doing more for yourself? In this episode, I talk about something we often overlook in a culture that constantly tells us to work on ourselves, optimize ourselves, and keep becoming more.Sometimes, the shift we need comes from looking outward.I talk about the connection between joy, service, and real human presence. I also share why being connected online is not always the same as feeling truly connected in your life.I reflect on the small ways we can show up for the people around us. A visit. A thoughtful gesture. A phone call. A few intentional minutes with someone who matters.I also share a personal story from my life that changed the way I think about service. That experience reminded me that helping someone else does not always deplete us. Sometimes, it fills us in ways we did not expect.I take you behind the scenes of a very full day in my own life too. Instead of pushing meaningful gestures to the bottom of my list, I made space for them earlier. What happened surprised me.My schedule did not fall apart.I felt lighter. More connected. More present. This episode is not about adding another responsibility to your life.It is about remembering what makes life feel meaningful in the first place. What You'll HearWhy more self-focus does not always create more happinessHow meaningful connection can shift the way you feelWhy real presence matters in a digitally connected worldWhat service can look like without over givingA personal story that shaped the way I see connectionWhy small acts often matter more than grand gesturesWhat happened when I prioritized people inside an already full dayHow to create more connection without making your life more complicatedSometimes, the thing that brings you back to yourself is the way you show up for someone else. One Line To Sit With“You can spend so much time looking inward that you actually lose yourself in the looking.”Connect with AmyInstagram: @its.amysandersLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/itsamysanders/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/coachamysanders/Explore Amy's WorkThe Unblocked Woman Collective: https://amysanders.co/the-unblocked-woman-collective-33The Mirror: https://amysanders.co/the-mirrorThe Unblocked Method: https://amysanders.co/the-unblocked-method

He and his colleagues (Jennifer Howk and Richard Seidel) have developed a revolutionary method for approaching life challenges and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. Central figures having major influence on the development of Esteem Dynamics include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Robert Trivers, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered world-leading theorists in evolutionary theory and human psychology. 514: Ask David w/ Dr. Matt May Schizophrenia, Resistance, TEAM's Future, and What Makes a Great Therapist In this thought-provoking Ask David episode, Dr. David Burns is joined by Kevin Cornelius, LMFT, and special guest Dr. Matt May, psychiatrist, TEAM-CBT therapist, and longtime colleague of Dr. Burns. Together, they tackle challenging listener questions about schizophrenia, emotional suffering, resistance to change, therapist training, and the future of psychotherapy. Along the way, the conversation becomes deeply personal as David reflects on the qualities that shaped the development of TEAM-CBT, his hopes and concerns for the future of psychotherapy, and the lessons he's learned after decades of clinical work. Our Special Guest: Dr. Matt May Kevin welcomes Dr. Matt May back to the podcast. Matt is a psychiatrist trained at Stanford who has worked closely with David for more than twenty years. Although trained in psychiatry, Matt explains that his work today focuses almost entirely on TEAM-CBT rather than medication management. David praises Matt as one of the most gifted therapists he has ever known, highlighting his warmth, compassion, humility, and clinical expertise. Question #1: Can TEAM-CBT Help the Negative Symptoms of Schizophrenia? A listener asks whether TEAM-CBT can help with the so-called "three A's" of schizophrenia: Apathy Avolition (severe lack of motivation) Anhedonia (loss of pleasure) or whether medication is the primary treatment. David's Response David challenges the assumptions behind the question itself. Rather than viewing people through the lens of diagnostic labels and symptoms, he emphasizes that TEAM-CBT begins by asking: "What would you like help with?" He argues that therapists often fall into the trap of acting like experts who believe they already know what a patient needs based on a diagnosis. TEAM-CBT takes the opposite approach, focusing on the individual person's goals, struggles, and hopes. David shares an early experience treating a patient with schizophrenia. Initially, he tried to challenge the patient's delusional beliefs directly through cognitive techniques. When the patient simply reinterpreted the evidence to support the delusion, David realized he was pursuing his own agenda rather than the patient's. The lesson: TEAM-CBT focuses on helping people with the problems they want help with—not on treating diagnostic labels. Key Takeaways Diagnosis does not define the person. People with schizophrenia may still want help with relationships, mood, habits, goals, or self-esteem. Effective therapy begins with understanding what matters to the individual. Humility is often more helpful than expertise. Question #2: What About Trauma, Brain Circuits, and "Underlying Vulnerabilities"? A listener asks whether present-moment thoughts are only part of the picture and whether deeper emotional circuitry, stress physiology, or network-level brain changes also contribute to emotional suffering. The listener also wonders whether cognitive therapy truly processes emotions like grief, fear, shame, and anger—or merely suppresses them. Matt's Perspective Matt offers a practical example from his own life. One afternoon he found himself flooded with depressive thoughts and self-critical feelings. He suddenly felt hopeless, inadequate, and discouraged. Then he realized: He had skipped lunch and was extremely hungry. After eating, the negative thoughts disappeared. His point is that physical states matter. Sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, illness, intoxication, and other biological factors can influence how easily negative thoughts arise and how difficult they are to challenge. David's Perspective David distinguishes sharply between: Healthy negative emotions Distorted emotional suffering He revisits a story from his medical school years, describing the death of a beloved elderly patient whose family gathered around him during his final moments. Everyone cried. David cried too. But that sadness was not depression. The grief emerged naturally from loving thoughts and genuine loss. In contrast, depression is fueled by distorted thoughts such as: "I'm worthless." "I'm not good enough." "Things will never get better." TEAM-CBT seeks to eliminate distorted suffering while preserving healthy human emotions. Key Takeaways Healthy grief is not a disorder. TEAM-CBT does not suppress genuine emotions. Depression, anxiety, shame, and hopelessness often arise from distorted thoughts that can be transformed. Biological factors matter, but thoughts remain a powerful therapeutic target. Question #3: What's the Biggest Misunderstanding Therapists Have About TEAM-CBT? A listener asks: When teaching clinicians, what misunderstanding should be corrected first? The belief that resistance means the patient is difficult? Or the belief that techniques alone are enough? David's Answer David emphasizes that TEAM is a system: Testing → Empathy → Agenda Setting → Methods Many therapists focus immediately on techniques and interventions. But before methods can work: The therapist must develop genuine empathy. The therapist must uncover resistance to change. Without empathy, patients don't feel understood. Without addressing resistance, therapists often end up arguing with their patients. David explains that people usually have many good reasons not to change. TEAM-CBT helps bring those reasons into awareness and resolve them before attempting intervention. Matt's Answer Matt reflects on his own training with David. He recalls spending countless hours learning empathy and discovering how difficult it is not to jump in with advice, reassurance, or premature solutions. According to Matt: Most therapists are tempted to help too quickly. Many accidentally create resistance by pushing for change. Understanding resistance is often one of the most challenging skills to master. Kevin's Perspective Kevin notes that TEAM itself naturally provides the roadmap: First learn testing. Then learn empathy. Then learn agenda setting. Only afterward focus on methods. The sequence protects therapists from moving too quickly into problem-solving. Question #4: What Is the Future of TEAM-CBT? A listener named Vlad writes a heartfelt letter reflecting on the transition from Rhonda Barovsky's co-hosting role and asking: What is the future of TEAM-CBT? How might it evolve? What personal qualities allowed David to create such an influential therapeutic framework? David on the Future of TEAM David explains that much of his current work focuses on preserving and sharing TEAM-CBT for future generations. Examples include: Recorded therapy sessions Training materials His psychotherapy eBook Psychology Today articles The Feeling Good Podcast The Feeling Great app He hopes future therapists will continue refining, expanding, and improving the methods. At the same time, David expresses disappointment that many mental health professionals have shown limited interest in approaches that emphasize rapid, measurable change. He remains committed to the possibility that therapy can become far more effective than it is today. The Personal Qualities Behind TEAM-CBT Matt identifies several characteristics he believes contributed to David's success: Intense Curiosity David never accepted conventional wisdom simply because others believed it. He continually asked: "What actually works?" Intellectual Honesty David consistently measures outcomes and learns from failures rather than defending cherished theories. Humility Rather than seeing himself as the expert, David allows patients to become his teachers. Compassion According to Matt, David's genuine concern for human suffering gives life to the science. Grit and Persistence David spent decades refining techniques, collecting data, developing tools, and challenging accepted assumptions. Discussion of AI and the Future of Therapy The conversation also touches on the Feeling Great app and artificial intelligence. David explains that the app was designed to deliver many TEAM-CBT principles to people who might not otherwise have access to therapy. He remains hopeful that technology can help make effective treatment more widely available while preserving the human values at the heart of psychotherapy. Memorable Themes from This Episode People are more important than diagnoses. Healthy sadness is different from depression. Empathy comes before technique. Resistance is not a problem—it is information. Great therapists remain curious and humble. Real innovation begins with measuring outcomes. Compassion and science work best together. In today's episode of The Business of Happiness, Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy highlights how one frightening moment on a plane became a powerful reminder of what truly matters. She shares her personal story of an emergency landing and the deep peace she felt when she looked back on a life built with love, purpose, and intention. For high-achieving women in dentistry and healthcare, this episode speaks to the hidden cost of burnout, stress, and putting everyone else first. Dr. Tarryn explains why real fulfillment does not come from a successful practice, a packed schedule, or meeting outside expectations. It begins when you take responsibility for your own health, happiness, and well-being. This is an honest conversation about self-care, nervous system health, leadership, and creating a life that feels as good as it looks.Show notes:(3:36) Emergency landing brings life into focus(7:49) From chaos to a fulfilled life(11:00) A self-alignment framework to help dentists and healthcare professionals to reconnect with themselves beyond burnout and outside expectations. https://truetomemethod.com/ (13:52) Why self-care is not selfish(19:32) Finding fulfillment beyond dentistry(23:11) Outro_______________________IMPORTANT LINKS:Empower Her Retreat:Dates: October 1–4, 2026Location: Taos, New MexicoWebsite: empowerherretreat.orgConnect with Dr. MacCarthy:Email: tarryn@drtarrynmaccarthy.comBook a call with Tarryn:https://api.leadconnectorhq.com/widget/bookings/happiness-and-prosperity-strategy-callUnlock your inner peace and reclaim joy in your profession with the Nervous System Regulation For Dentists Course: https://www.thebizofhappiness.com/calmPlease join my Facebook group, Business Of Happiness Hive, so we can all take this journey to find fulfillment and happiness together. In today's Friday episode of the Happiness Hour, Dennis delves into the concept of the, "Missing tile syndrome," a phenomenon where we focus on what's lacking in our lives. This idea is so universal that it's hard to imagine someone who hasn't experienced it. From the woman who only saw wedding rings on others, to the bald man who noticed hair everywhere, the missing tile syndrome is a natural part of human nature. Dennis shares personal anecdotes and listener stories that illustrate how this syndrome can manifest in our lives. We hear from Carrie, a single mom who was struggling to make ends meet, and how she shifted her focus from what she was missing to the blessings she already had. We also meet Patty, a hypnotherapist who has helped countless people overcome their own missing tile syndromes. These stories highlight the importance of gratitude and reframing our perspectives. Danny Murillo is the co-founder of Underground Scholars, a program that creates pathways to higher education for incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and system-impacted people. Gilbert Murillo is a policy advocate and researcher who draws on his own experience with incarceration to reform California's criminal justice system.
