And God is held back by nothing. God would never say, "I could help you, but you messed up badly so I can't.”Neither does He say, “I could give you a great life, but your parents were dysfunctional so my hands are tied." Limits do not stand before the limitlessness of God; it is only limits to our faith, not inherent limits in our circumstances, that would keep us from experiencing miracles.Every situation provides us the chance to live with broader, more audacious faith that all things are possible. God is bigger than any limited circumstance in our past; God is bigger than any limits that the world is showing us now. Limitations exist only as a challenge to us to mature spiritually, to realize that through the grace of God we are bigger than our problems. There is no order of difficulty in miracles. When we pray to God to dissolve the messes that we have created, His spirit enters our minds. It then turns us into the people we need to be in order to make all things right."-Marianne Williamson, Return to Love"You're here to do wonders but you must  be patient with yourself. Check out my free video series about what's missing in AI and Neuroscience Ellie Pavlick runs her Language Understanding and Representation Lab at Brown University, where she studies lots of topics related to language. In AI, large language models, sometimes called foundation models, are all the rage these days, with their ability to generate convincing language, although they still make plenty of mistakes. One of the things Ellie is interested in is how these models work, what kinds of representations are being generated in them to produce the language they produce. So we discuss how she's going about studying these models. For example, probing them to see whether something symbolic-like might be implemented in the models, even though they are the deep learning neural network type, which aren't suppose to be able to work in a symbol-like manner. We also discuss whether grounding is required for language understanding - that is, whether a model that produces language well needs to connect with the real world to actually understand the text it generates. We talk about what language is for, the current limitations of large language models, how the models compare to humans, and a lot more. 19th century Danish philosopher Søren Kirkegaard once mused, “Busyness tends to prevent people from forming a heart.” Theologian Kelly Kapic agrees. Kelly shares his struggle to shed the unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves and the solution he found to “the busy problem” — embracing our limitations, which connects us to God and to others.   *Are you celebrating Lent with your family? It's for all of God's people.”  – Kelly Kapic   “What I found so often was that wave of shame that would come over me when I put my head on the pillow, it was so often this: I should have gotten more done today. I should have done more. And so the question is, did God actually think I needed to do more?”  – Kelly Kapic   “It would be beautiful for us to revisit and understand the rhythms of work and rest and laughter and delight in gratitude, not just busyness.”  – Kelly Kapic   “Really embracing our limitations brings freedom and joy because at its base, it connects us to God and others.”  – Kelly Kapic   “Humility at its best is a recognition that to be a human creature is to be dependent on God, to be dependent on neighbor, and to be dependent on the Earth.” – Kelly Kapic   “I think it takes a tremendous amount of courage to believe not just that God loves you, but He likes you. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Some problems in operations at EA orgs: inputs from a dozen ops staff, published by Vaidehi Agarwalla on March 16, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a brief summary of an operations brainstorm that took place during April 2022. It represents the views of operations staff at 8-12 different EA-aligned organizations (approximately). We split up into groups and brainstormed problems, and then chose the top problems to brainstorm some tentative solutions. The aim of the brainstorming session was to highlight things that needed improvement, rather than to evaluate how good EA operations roles are relative to the other non-profit or for-profit roles. It's possible that EA organizations are not uniquely bad or good - but that doesn't mean that these issues are not worth addressing. The outside world (especially the non-profit space) is pretty inefficient, and I think it's worth trying to improve things. Limitations of this data: Meta / community building (and longtermist, to a lesser degree) organizations were overrepresented in this sample, and the tallies are estimates. We didn't systematically ask people to vote for each and every sub-item, but we think the overall priorities raised were reasonable. General Brainstorming Four major themes came up in the original brainstorming session: bad knowledge management, unrealistic expectations, bad delegation, and lack of respect for operations. The group then re-formed new groups to brainstorm solutions for each of these key pain points. Below, we go into a breakdown of each large issue into specific points raised during the general brainstorming session. Some points were raised multiple times and are indicated by the “(x n)” to indicate how many times the point was raised. Knowledge management Problems Organizations don't have good systems for knowledge management. Ops staff don't have enough time to coordinate and develop better systems. There is a general lack of structure, clarity and knowledge. Issues with processes and systems (x 4) No time on larger problems Lack of time to explore & coordinate Lack of time to make things easier ([you're always] putting out fires) [Lack of] organizational structure Line management Capacity to cover absences [see Unrealistic Expectations] Covering / keeping the show running Responsibilities Working across time zones Training / upskilling Management training [see improper delegation] Lack of Clarity + Knowledge Legal Compliance HR Hiring Wellbeing (including burnout) Lack of skill transfer Lack of continuity / High turn-over of junior ops specialists Potential Solutions Lowering the bar - e.g. you don't need a PhD to work in ops. Pick people with less option value. Ask people to be nice and share with others Best practice guides shared universally. [Make them] available to people before hiring so they can understand the job better before applying, so [there's] less turn-over. Database? (Better ops Slack?) Making time to create Knowledge Management Systems - so less fire-fighting. People higher in the organization [should have] better oversight of processes/knowledge. Unrealistic expectations Problems Employers have unrealistic expectations for ops professionals. Ops people are expected to do too much in too little time and always be on call. Lack of capacity / too much to do (x2) [Lack of] capacity to cover absences [from above] Ops people [are expected to be] “always on call” Timelines for projects [are subject to the] planning fallacy, [and there are] last minute changes Ops team [are] responsible for all new ideas that people come [up] with - could others do it? Unrealistic expectations about coordination capacity skillset organizational memory Solutions Bandwidth (?) Don't Get Scammed: What Every Potential Psychedelic Therapist Needs to Know Introduction: In this episode of The Psychedelic Coach Podcast, your host Kole Whitty talks about how to avoid being scammed in the emerging field of psychedelic therapy. If you are a psychotherapist or aspire to become a psychedelic psychotherapist, Kole will share some things you may not have considered that are already happening and likely to increase in the coming years. Medicalized, Decriminalized, and Legalized Models: Kole explains that there are different models for psychedelic care: medicalized, decriminalized, and legalized. None of them is a total solution, and each has its problems. Limitations of Medicalized Models: Kole focuses on the limitations of medicalized models of care, where participants must qualify for treatment based on predetermined criteria. This means that only certain populations will have access to care due to location and financial access. Challenges for Psychedelic Therapists: Kole emphasizes the challenges that psychedelic therapists may face, such as finding a qualified mental health practitioner in areas where they are scarce, and dealing with insurance and billing issues. Additionally, certified training programs can have waitlists of up to a year, and even after completing the program, there is no guarantee of employment due to the legal status of psychedelics at the federal level. Conclusion: Kole warns potential psychedelic therapists to be aware of the challenges and potential scams in the field, but also encourages them to continue pursuing their passion for helping people. She believes that with education and collaboration, the psychedelic therapy community can overcome these challenges and make a positive impact on people's lives.

Three Chords and the Truth: The Apologetics Podcast
How to Be an Apologist without Being a Jerk, with Timothy Paul Jones and Garrick Bailey

Three Chords and the Truth: The Apologetics Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2023 25:22

You don't have to be a jerk to be an apologist.  In fact, if you're being a jerk, you're not doing apologetics in a biblical way, because biblical apologetics calls Christians to defend the faith in “meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15b). So how can we do apologetics without being a jerk? One of the best ways not to be a jerk is to listen to 1980s rock, which is why your intrepid cohosts have included clips from Bon Jovi and Sammy Hagar-era Van Halen in this episode. (Fun fact: Jon Bon Jovi's last name is actually spelled “Bongiovi,” and “Böngïövï” would have been an amazing name for the band.) But you need more than 1980s rock to grow in meekness, and that's why this episode goes far beyond merely reminding you of the greatness of Bon Jovi and Van Halen. In this second episode in a two-part series about where to begin in apologetics, the dynamic duo provides you with their final four points about apologetics—all of which can help you to do apologetics with gentleness and reverence while listening to Bon Jovi, which is the opposite of being a jerk. Here are the four points from this episode: 4. The life of a faithful apologist is marked by meekness. 5. Faithful apologists are more interested in winning people than in winning arguments. 6. Faithful apologists use different methods to meet different challenges. 7. Faithful apologists see apologetics as a work of the whole church. ABOUT YOUR HOSTS Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He teaches in the areas of family ministry and applied apologetics. We're back y'all! For our Season 6 premiere, we're talking about how we conjure alternate realities in our writing. We discuss the documented gaps in the historical lives of Black people, our resistance to writing about the past, as well as how to honor our ancestor's stories. We think about the timelessness of the South, the optimism in current afroftuturist work, and the purpose of dystopian stories. This episode begins with the infancy of Jesus and ends with his resurrection. Garrick brings up the infancy of Jesus in the Raiders of Church History segment in the most awkward of ways. This episode is the first—and hopefully the last—time that "lactation" has ever been mentioned on The Apologetics Podcast. Timothy brings the battle to a premature end by hitting Garrick in the head with the Lindisfarne Gospels. Your intrepid cohosts quickly forgive one another, however, and move on to make three key points about what apologetics is. This episode is the first in the two-part series about what apologetics is and how to do apologetics well. Here are the three main points in this episode: (1) Apologetics is a defense that includes evidence. (2) Apologetics calls for holiness. (3) Apologetics is centered in the hope of the resurrection. As Garrick and Timothy unpack these three points, Billy Joel shows up to defend the Christians wrongly accused of burning Rome in A.D. 64, and Pink Floyd and Brian May prove Augustine of Hippo right about the resurrection of Jesus. The Karate Kid shows up too, but the dynamic duo isn't quite sure why. It has something to do with the Papyrus font, and ”Päpÿrüs” would be a perfect name for a heavy metal band that translates its lyrics from fragments of ancient papyri. ABOUT YOUR HOSTS Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In this episode—especially since it has been so long since our last one—we decided to revisit the concept of kodawari and how it has changed for us over the three years of doing this podcast/blog. Over time we encounter more knowledge and have more life experiences. And as we attempt to integrate those into a coherent life philosophy, our ideas about life change and update. I believe we have a duty to regularly bring a beginner's mind to our ideas so that we can "rediscover" them with novelty. There is something cyclic to the way that we descend into a more chaotic state of confusion and then emerge from it by finding once again our deep truths with freshness in the present moment. This cyclic process can subtly or drastically update our ideas, making them more personal, genuine, valuable, and "true".So since we are very different people than when we started the podcast three years ago, we felt it would be good to revisit the meaning of kodawari with fresh eyes. We especially lean into the uncompromising element of kodawari and why our society needs more "skillful inflexibility" to continue functioning.Timestamps:[04:36] Why are we revisiting the meaning of kodawari?[09:09] How has kodawari changed for us?[12:12] What are we uncompromising about?[20:41] Rethinking how perfection fits into kodawari[23:11] Why humility is crucial[26:32] Limitations of the intellect and Chekhov's The Seagull [32:59] Our official 2023 definition of kodawariLinks:First podcast episode on kodawariArticle: What is Kodawari?Japanese Ramen's KodawariThe Japanese philosophy of "Kodawari"Chekhov's The Seagull A Rabbi, a Priest, and an Atheist Smoke Weed TogetherSupport Us:You can always support us by leaving a rating or review in your podcasting app. You can also share our episodes with friends on social media. But it does take a lot of time to put together a podcast, maintain a website, and write new content every week.
