Wizards of the Coast and Magic: the Gathering have been embracing diversity in fantasy storytelling. With a beautifully adapted Lord of the Rings set that was released earlier in 2023 and The Lost Caverns of Ixalan set, it's a beautiful time to see yourself represented in fantasy in ways that haven't been present before. This month, Magic the Gathering released a stellar Mesoamerican-inspired The Lost Caverns of Ixalan that brought to life gods, places, and the dinosaurs of the Yucatan and reimagined conquistadores as vampires. The set was immediately recognizable as one of the sharpest and most informed explorations of Mesoamerican myth and beauty in fantasy. To talk about this, we spoke with Art Director Ovidio Cartagena about The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, the cards' art inspiration, working with historians, and what it means to represent Latin America in one of the most notable Fantasy franchises in pop culture.

In episode 9 of "There Is No System," titled "The Artist's Dilemma: Expressing Beliefs through Creativity" host Brian Behm, an Austin-based motion designer, artist, musician, and Art Director at Emergent Order Foundation, delves into the intricate balance between artistic creativity and personal ideologies. Drawing from his experiences in the art world and as the art department head at Rooster Teeth, Brian reflects on the constant mental tug-of-war between one's artistic soul and ideological brain. This episode unpacks the inherent struggle in creating art that genuinely reflects personal beliefs without succumbing to societal pressures or ideological tribes. It discusses the challenges faced by artists who straddle different viewpoints, especially those leaning towards classical liberalism or other non-dominant ideologies. Brian emphasizes the importance of fostering a marketplace of ideas, advocating for a creative expression that's not bound by a single narrative or ideology.Exploring concepts like intersectionality and epistemic humility, Brian proposes recontextualizing these ideas to enhance artistic expression. He shares his journey of balancing risk-taking in art with personal and familial considerations, illustrating the tightrope walk between daring creativity and societal acceptance. The episode aims to empower artists to embrace their unique blend of creativity and personal beliefs, encouraging them to stir the pot of conventional artistic expression. Brian's goal is to ignite a dialogue about the role of gatekeeping in the arts and its impact on creative freedom, urging listeners to reflect on their own artistic journeys and the influences shaping them.Written and performed by Brian Behm Original Music (unless noted) by Brian Behm/No_System Stock Music provided through AudiiioMusic Included In This EpisodeQue Parks - Unlock (Get Ready For It)(Instrumental)Adi Goldstein - Inspiring Heights (Pt.2)(Instrumental)Adi Goldstein - Morning Spring (Instrumental)Adi Goldstein - Magic Hour (Instrumental)(Loop)Adi Goldstein - Safe Ride Home (vers 1)Beach Tiger - Numb (Instrumental)Liam Back - Innocence (Instrumental)Rhodan - Bloom (Instrumental)The Purple Kite - It's Time To Start Something New (Instrumental)The Prams - Now That We're Far (Instrumental)Yair Cohen - Haze (Instrumental)-- clips used or referencedThe Crow Hill Company: Make Music, YOUR Music.https://youtu.be/D7tCNqmp6f0?si=WfqJeRkMZlgEKWV1Death of a Salesman Trailerhttps://youtu.be/zsJhonpcetk?si=vEtCArr5Ao4D-Ub6Cars Sink Through Ice on Lake Pepinhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suwAK7y0QdcTruck Falls Through Ice on Lake Hanska in Southern Minnesotahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOvCRMHWBokHarvard, Hamas, and the Barbaric Death Of Discourse In The Westhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6noX5AUuzwU&t=1sThe Walkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR1EmTKAWIwMan on Wirehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz6oddi0mts—- Take a look at No_System's apparel and accessories at nosysknows.com ——- Transcripts available at nosysknows.com/podcast ——-Please like and review on your favorite podcast platform of choice. Play Episode Listen Later Nov 7, 2023 59:36

Ein sehr schönes Format, also gerne einmal anschauen. 172: Healing Masculinity, Sexual Liberation, and Family Reconciliation with Tantra from VICE star Shaft Uddin Quote: “There is so little education around sexual wellness, sexual education. No one really knows how to say no when it comes to... some kind of intimacy; but also, no one really knows how to say yes.” – Shaft Uddin Summary: I met our next guest, Shaft Uddin, at a global event. He had so much "taboo" sacred sexuality knowledge to share during our juicy chat. You see…Shaft is a tantra practitioner and healer. During our conversation, he introduces some eye-opening topics. So, this episode definitely is NSFK (not safe for kids) or NSFW (not safe for work).  We'll touch on everything from sexual healing and liberation to making peace with family and embracing masculinity through appreciation of the feminine. Shaft even explains why understanding and healing our bodies, particularly through sacred sexuality, is so crucial. And, of course, he gets personal and tells ALL about his own journey. In this episode we talk about… Struggling with his masculinity as a result of a challenging relationship with his father. Reconciliation with his parents and facilitating healing for himself, his father, and the entire family unit. What is sacred sexuality, and how do we reclaim it in our lives and in our relationships. The fundamentals of tantra and how it relates to sexual liberation, pleasure, and healing. The courage and bravery required to break free from societal norms and judgments in pursuit of one's authentic self.   Bio: As a young adult, Shaft Uddin's life was one of hedonism and excess. He went from being the son of a working-class immigrant, to being a super-successful Art Director in advertising, working for some of the biggest brands on the planet: A classic rags-to-riches story.   And yet, Shaft was living a double life fuelled by alcohol and drug addiction. He was the picture of success, but beneath the surface he suffered from repeated broken relationships, depression and self-hatred. It wasn't until Shaft had several near-death experiences and alienated most of his friends, that he realized things had to change.   Intuitively, Shaft turned to alternative therapies, meditation, plant medicines and tantra. In under two years, he was free of my addictions and had learned the power of self-love. Dedicated to helping people reconnect with their hearts and find deeper connections, productivity in the workplace, and more meaningful relationships, Shaft serves as a trauma release therapist, tantric practitioner, coach, and speaker. I titled this episode of "Chatter That Matters" "Forever Young" and recorded it live at the Toronto Hunt Club. The idyllic setting alone adds a unique backdrop to a conversation that erupts with laughter and spontaneous applause. The man at the center of it is the master storyteller, the iconic Canadian editorial cartoonist and painter Andy Donato. Andy Donato is not just an artist; he's a force of immense character, and his character is woven into the very fabric of who he is, from his distinctive appearance, with an unbridled shock of hair and a mischievous smile, to how he characterizes pivotal moments in time, to a handshake made with intent and integrity. Andy shares hilarious stories of his journey, from his early days as a layout artist at Eaton to his pivotal role as Art Director and then as a world-renowned and decorated editorial cartoonist. Over the years, many Canadian Prime Ministers consider being a target of his incisive cartoons as a badge of honour. Beyond the realm of editorial cartoons, Andy's "Bent Realism" painting style has been featured in one-man exhibitions worldwide. And to this day, Andy in his eighties continues to create a weekly cartoon, paint, and golf, a testament to my title, Forever Young. Deenah Patel returns to Chatter to Matters to talk about how small business owners can remain Forever Strong.

Recently, Ben Chou and I went to the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICE). For me, it's been many years since I went there, and remember what a great collection of comics they had, many of which I still have today.   Well, this year did not disappoint. Held at Boston University's Fuller Building, the event featured dozens of comics creators, some at the start of their careers and others with a slew of titles to their names.   In this episode, Ben and I talked with a some of artists and one of the minds behind the event (who is also an artist, so remember that!). First up is Savannah Strodder. This was her first MICE and we talk about the experience, the people she met and some important lessons for her artistic career. Savannah has a comic out, “Mundae,” with beautiful illustrations and absolutely no text, so the reader can make their own story. I really like the concept and yes, I purchased a copy. I wonder how my story will go…..   Hannah Templer may be a familiar name—she's worked on titles like Doctor Who, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more. Hannah also has a great series called “Cosmoknights.” It's all about a ragtag group of space gays out to save princesses from the patriarchy. Needless to say, I bought both volumes shortly thereafter. We go into the origins of the series, how it's grown over the years, and what we can expect in the forthcoming third volume. Hannah also shares some of her times at MICE and what she likes about the expo.   Tak Toyoshima is perhaps best known for his Secret Asian Man comic, and for years he was an exhibitor at MICE. Well, he's also one of the organizers as the Art Director, and let me tell you, that's no cake walk. Ben took the lead here, and the two talk about what led to Tak taking on this new role and what it's been like. Tak gives us some history on Secret Asian Man as well as some other projects he's working on (hint: think Choose Your Own Adventure). He and Ben talk about the state of the comics industry and the pros and cons of the recent changes that it's seen.   Wrapping this episode up is Shaina Lu. Like Savannah, this is her first time at MICE and she shares the great memories made over the weekend. Shaina is in the process of releasing a new comic, “Noodle & Bao,” all about a food cart that stands against a hip new café and gentrification. Shaina said the series takes a cue from what she has seen in Boston's Chinatown and we go into that as a theme. Shaina is also an art teacher for elementary students and we look at her teaching style and how she helps guide the next generation of creatives.

Not many kids dream of designing a billboard one day. It was at age 11, when he picked up his first commission from the printer (business cards for his equally entrepreneurial teenage brother), that he realised he was hooked on design. Soon after, a school careers night opened his eyes to commercial art, and his future was set. Some would call it a singular talent for designing original ideas. If you ask him, it's down to hard work and luck.  Ant Donovan is a multi-award-winning creative who has attracted widespread attention throughout his career. As Partner & Group Creative Director at Frost*collective, he's helped some of the world's biggest brands find people-centred solutions to difficult problems. Ant has had a huge impact in the design space over the past two-plus decades globally. And if you're Australian, there's a very slim chance you haven't been impacted by his work.  Ant's career in design has taken him on an amazing journey, from flying in a helicopter above the most populated city in the world to riding a hovercraft in the remote wilderness of Australia's outback. His first ‘real' job was as Art Director at the critically acclaimed photography and culture bible, Black+White magazine. Since then, he's worked with a diverse range of organisations and industries; from large-scale corporations, tourism bodies and retail giants, to iconic cultural institutions, not for profits and one-person start-ups. His passion and relentless drive to make work that matters is what gets him out of bed.  Listen in as Vince and Ant discuss designing layouts for David Bailey, Rankin and Testino aged 22, what drawing an entire typeface by hand with a Rotring pen can teach you about design, and how to find original ideas in today's oversaturated world.  https://www.frostcollective.com.au/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chatting With Sherri welcomes award-winning artist and illustrator; Clarence Bateman! Clarence Bateman's passion for art was inspired by comic books from an early age. He fantasized about one day being a comic book artist for Marvel as Spiderman was his favorite superhero at the time. In his early teenage years he would hustle family members by doing Christmas cards and lightly twisting their arms to buy them. He would do art for his friends in school and they would pay him with comic books. He dropped out of high school to enroll in the The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica attending for three years before emigrating to the US.   After a series of dead end jobs he decided to go back to school for art enrolling in the New York City Technical College part time while holding down a full time job in the garment district as a pattern maker. He did a three year advertising program with the intention of becoming an Art Director and instead ended up working in the advertising field for the next thirty plus years as a freelance pre-production sketch artist. Sketch art at the time was done primarily with magic markers, color pencils and inks. When work started transitioning to the computer he taught himself how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.   Clarence's primary focus is Science Fiction and Fantasy art encompassing such a wide range of subject matter he considers it practically impossible to have artist block. He spends his late nights honing his skills, constantly learning, and working to become a better artist. Clarence Bateman artist and Illustrators of the Future winner from L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39.
