Hi there Beautiful, What if there are no rules? What if every rule is made up? trust your own creative process. follow your own intuition. I tried Julia Cameron's Morning Pages in The Artist's Way, and it no longer works for me. I thought I was a failure, but then I gave myself permission to trust my own process and follow my own creative intuition. Could following the rules be killing your creativity? much love, joy and peace, Alecia
In this episode, I sit down with Brandi Lust, a powerful advocate for personal growth, community building, and host of CreativeMornings here in Columbus, Ohio. We dive deep into the challenges that creatives face, especially in times of uncertainty, where things just aren't working the way they used to. Brandi opens up about her own struggles in the creative world and how she's learning to trust herself through these transitions. We also get into her professional journey, shifting from a career as a teacher to becoming a consultant, speaker, and mindfulness advocate. Brandi's passion for personal development shines through as she talks about how helping people gain new awareness and insights lights her up, and how she's dedicated to shifting the culture in workplaces to foster authentic growth. We touch on many interesting subjects, such as the idea of “care washing” in work environments—where companies project fake values to seem more caring—and the need for real, genuine culture shifts. Brandi shares her thoughts on how organizations can sometimes push false narratives to seem compassionate, but real change only happens when there's a deeper sense of authenticity. We also discuss the balance between being true to ourselves in our personal and professional lives, especially when the lines get blurry. Brandi shares some powerful advice on how to stay connected to your true self, no matter what external challenges or expectations you face. And for anyone curious about consulting, Brandi shares some golden insights on how she got started in that world, blending her passion for personal growth with helping organizations create meaningful change. Brandi openly shares her journey of self-discovery, from navigating major life transitions to embracing her true self after coming out later in life. She talks about leaving a long-term relationship, moving into her own space, and the waves of grief that came with it, but also the joy in rediscovering her identity and finding peace in the chaos. This was a super deep and inspiring conversation, full of vulnerable moments and valuable takeaways. Restaurant owner, entrepreneur, media personality, and community cheerleader Kelli Lemon wears many hats in Richmond, Virginia. On this episode of "Eat It, Virginia," Kelli shared why she decided to open Urban Hang Suite in downtown Richmond and what that experience has taught her about life, business, and the city she calls home. "Kendra [Feather] is the reason Hang Suite is open," Lemon said. "Creative Mornings, I think it was January 2017. My topic was a question mark, it was like a mystery. I was like, I'm looking for this thing, that's kind of a hangout, where people could talk to each other, but it's not a restaurant, it could be a cafe. And I think it was Anne Marie that yelled out, "Do it!" It was either Kendra or Anne Marie. And then the next day, Kendra called me. It was like, I want to show you this space." In addition to Urban Hang Suite, Kelli talked about her roles at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Virginia Black Restaurant Experience, the Art of Noise, and the birth of her podcast Coffee with Strangers. https://Art2Life.com - Rukmini Poddar is an artist, educator, and designer. Her creative passion lies at the intersection of emotional wellness and creative storytelling. She is an artist who draws feelings. She admits that stumbled into art. It wasn't a planned career path. When Rukmini graduated college, she was burnt out. As a graphic designer, she spent much of her time on the computer. She wanted to get her hands dirty, so she dove into the 100-Day Project. She started playing with watercolors and made abstract doodles. She started drawing her feelings to express her creativity. She'd post them on Instagram. Before she knew it, it became the anchor for her day. By the end of the 100 days, her life was changed. People would comment and say, “I've always felt this way and I've never had words for it.” Something extremely personal to her became universal. She found a community that resonated with her work. It became her guiding light. Drawing her feelings led to a passion for art she never knew existed. She shares more about her journey to finding herself and helping others connect with their emotions in this wonderful conversation. ================================ LISTEN IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN… [2:22] Learn more about Rukmini Poddar [8:00] Drawing your feelings together [9:59] The magical process of art-making [13:14] Rukmini's family's perspective on her art [16:23] Rukmini's career in graphic design [23:00] Rukmini's art-making process [25:40] Sign up for an Art2Life retreat [26:51] Making the invisible visible [29:49] From group classes to writing a book [33:50] Helping others unlock their emotions [39:57] Why Rukmini is passionate about her work [42:31] How life is a series of differences [47:19] Balancing the tension between opposite emotions [53:23] What's happening next for Rukmini ================================ RESOURCES MENTIONED Sign up for an Art2Life retreat: The 100 Day Project: https://www.the100dayproject.org/ Joe Dispenza: https://drjoedispenza.com/ CreativeMornings: https://creativemornings.com/ Dan Martell: https://www.danmartell.com/ ================================= CONNECT WITH RUKMINI PODDAR Draw Your Feelings: A Creative Journal to Help Connect with Your Emotions through Art: https://www.amazon.com/Draw-Your-Feelings-Creative-Emotions/dp/0593539141 Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockinruksi Rukmini's Website: https://www.dearruksi.com Creative Wilderness: A Healing Arts Retreat: https://www.dearruksi.com/retreat ============================= CONNECT WITH NICHOLAS WILTON AND ART2LIFE: Get the Free COLOR TIPS PDF: https://workshop.art2life.com/color-tips-pdf-podcasts/ Follow the Sunday Art2Life Vlog: https://art2life.lpages.co/sign-up-for-the-a2l-vlog/ Follow Nicholas Wilton's Art on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nicholaswilton/ Follow Art2Life on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/art2life_world/?hl=en Subscribe on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Art2Life #Art2Life #FineArt #AbstractArt #ModernArt #Contemporary
Art has the power to change and even lead the conversation, to spark curiosity and fuel real engagement. But what comes first in a powerful creative project? The idea and the message? The tools and the talent? Or The Funding, that can make or break it all? My guest today is Benjamin Von Wong, who creates art on a grand scale that goes beyond awe. He is an Artist focused on amplifying positive impact. He does that both in the process of how he creates his art, through community, and in the images it produces, finding visual metaphors that stick with people, long after they've seen the work. His mission is to help make positive impact unforgettable. For the last seven years, Von Wong and his team, under the banner of “Unforgettable Labs” have generated over a billion organic views on topics like Ocean Plastics, Fast Fashion, and Electronic Waste for organizations like Dell, Greenpeace, Nike, Starbucks and Kiehl's. In this opening quote you can hear him wrangle with the dance between art and marketing, and his new mission to find ways to create sustainable funding streams that allow him to create message-shaping art in times and places where the world is gathered to solve some of our most pressing challenges. It's a move that can make his work more deeply sustainable - for himself and for his team. Von Wong's The Unforgettable Project leverages the collective power of philanthropy to help build broader campaigns around environmentally net-positive innovations worth spotlighting - instead of waiting for corporations that are seeking eyeballs and leveraging their funding for good, he's building a funding source that actively seeks the next project that needs to go viral. Some of his notable work includes the Giant Plastic Tap which used trash from the slums of Kibera, in Nairobi, Kenya, to demand that corporations #TurnOffThePlasticTap. The Giant Tap was displayed prominently when 193 different countries and 1,500 delegates came together at UNEA 5.2 in 2022 to discuss what was then termed the “Paris Agreement For Plastics” and was eventually used in the United Nations official Plastics Report while raising over $100,000 for the Human Needs Project. Recently he installed a grand sculpture at the Highline in New York City in collaboration with Kiehl's to raise awareness and drive adoption of refillable products in the beauty world. Von Wong, along with a large community of volunteers, collected and assembled 2 tons of plastic bottles into a “single-use hydra”, seen by nearly 300-thousand visitors and close to 3 million social impressions for their message of #DontRebuyJustRefill…but as he points out in this conversation, most of the people on the High Line don't have the leverage to change the system - which is why he seeks to place his epic art in places where the system changers meet. I learned about Benjamin's work through his wonderful talk at Creative Mornings (a global, IRL community of creatives that hosts monthly talks all around the world). His presentation spoke to some beautiful topics - like the importance of nurturing the conditions of success (like inner narratives and cultivating community) vs chasing success, and the notion of sifting your feelings from reality when it comes to deciding what is enough - personally, financially, and in the work - ie, is my work having enough impact? Von Wong shared the ways in which he's rewriting his inner narrative to balance his personhood and his purpose or impact. I found the talk profoundly moving and beautiful and highly recommend watching it. In this conversation, you'll find: Ruminations on Creationships - relationships that exist to co-create something wonderful together (4:09) The Importance of an Interface or a Container to foster Conversation (7:47) Benjamin's perspectives on going to where the conversations are already happening to have the deepest impacts. This is certainly true for the large scale work that he creates, but it is also true for anyone looking to change a big conversation. Making people come to you vs going to them means the activation energy of change is that much lower. (13:18) Benjamin's thoughts on Community Building and Co-creating art with a community (16:43) The polarity Benjamin is threading right now: Balancing Speeding Up (to do more work and have more impact) and Slowing Down (in order to build deeper creationships) (26:21) The difference between an Audience and a Community (32:44) The power of creating a word that summarizes and defines an idea that people flock to (which we might term the Rumpelstiltskin or Le Guin Rule (as she famously wrote in A Wizard of Earthsea “To weave the magic of a thing, you see, one must find its true name out.” (33:39) Head over to theconversationfactory.com/listen for full episode transcripts, links, show notes and more key quotes and ideas. Take Lisa's class, Imaginative Map-Making in Procreate on Skillshare — Use this link to get 30 days free! — https://skl.sh/3z8zI9aJoin in on my conversaion with Lisa Bardot, who teaches people how to make art on their iPad. But that job description is deceivingly simple. She may be best known for her vast catalogue of analogue inspired procreate brushes, aka Bardot Brush. (She's kind of the Kyle T. Webster of procreate brushes). But she also teaches making digital online in places like Skillshare, YouTube and her own membership platform called Art Maker's Club. She also runs in-person art trips — her most recent one being in France. If that weren't enough, she's also the author of a brand new book called Drawing Digital, The Complete Guide for Learning to Draw and Paint on Your iPad, AND she even provides monthly prompt lists for inspiration-seeking artists, which she calls Make Art Every Day. Lisa has created an entire universe of creativity and community around her passion for drawing and illustrating in Procreate. I really think she's a perfect guest for the podcast, as she embodies the whole ethos of this podcast of showing up everyday and growing through it, no matter what (and thriving because of it). >>> Video edition available on YouTube.

Welcome to a special edition of "Working Your Way," where authenticity in the workplace is the heart of our conversation. I'm your host, Sandhya Sudhakar. In today's episode, I dive into my own journey of authenticity, sharing the live talk I delivered for the Chicago chapter of CreativeMornings, a global community that inspires creatives to connect and flourish. This isn't your typical presentation—it's an informal, intimate glimpse into how I've navigated the complexities of starting and running my own business in alignment with my core values and passions. The theme of my talk was "Treasure," but not in the conventional sense of final outcomes or achievements. Instead, I explore how true treasure lies in the journey—the trials and triumphs of building a business that not only serves my clients but also stays true to who I am. You'll hear about my experiences of experimenting, failing, succeeding, learning, and unlearning, all of which have shaped the way I operate both personally and professionally. This episode offers a unique behind-the-scenes look back, to when this podcast was just a concept taking shape in my mind. Join me as I share how embracing every aspect of my entrepreneurial adventure has been my treasure, urging us all to find the value in our own paths. Enjoy this candid reflection on what it means to work your way through creativity, challenges, and the pursuit of authenticity.Resources:Find a CreativeMornings event in your city: creativemornings.comConnect with me:InstagramLinkedInYouTubeselfatwork.comProduced by NOVA Media

It's the Thanksgiving holiday break in the US, so we're re-broadcasting one of our favorite episodes about friendship and community, which is very timely as we approach the holiday season. Living in isolation for two years without the support of community clarified for many of us just how nourishing and essential relationships are to us. Now that we're starting to re-enter the world, how might we be more intentional about cultivating community? Tina Roth-Eisenberg—Swissmiss to her hundreds of thousands of followers on the web—has thought about this deeply. She's the founder of Creative Mornings, a global creative community in 224 cities and 67 countries that welcomes thousands of people each month to inspiring events. She's also a master at bringing small groups together for support, and as you'll hear in this episode, pretty clever at building new friendships. Grab the freebie for this episode by heading here! There's a lot that goes into hiring a content support contractor – here's where to start If you're at a point in your business where you could use a little extra help creating content, you should 100% consider hiring a contractor. Not only will it allow you to spend more time in your zone of genius, but you can also bring them on for just a few hours or on an as-needed basis, which isn't an option with a full-time employee. Over the years, I've relied on skilled content contractors to create content for my audience. Under my (and my team's) direction, they've done everything from writing email copy to producing high-traffic lead magnets, and more! But here's the thing. It takes quite a bit of work and lots of communication to bring on a content support contractor and have it work successfully. Luckily, I've got it boiled down to a fine science – so I know exactly what I'm looking for, where to find that person, and how to onboard them so the relationship is a win/win for everyone involved. And that's what I'm diving into in this episode. You'll hear: Why hiring a contractor over a full-time employee can be more beneficial in the beginning The importance of providing lots of support and resources for your contractor The best places to find a content support contractor, and how to vet them How to onboard contractors and offer constructive feedback So if you're thinking about hiring a contractor to help you create content, be sure to tune in – because these strategies will definitely set you in the right direction. Here's a glance at this episode... [08:28] Set realistic goals and timelines with contractors, because they will have other clients. Be clear on how many hours you will need them. [11:13] Doing everything yourself will lead to grief and overwhelm. When it's time to scale, you have to believe other people can do it better than you. [15:33] Another person can offer a fresh perspective with your content. [16:29] We've found some people on Fiverr, Create & Cultivate, Creative Mornings, and LinkedIn, but referrals are my favorite way to find contractors. [19:23] Ask for samples or a paid project test run. Give them time to ask questions and set a deadline. Assign a task to familiarize them with your content. [23:05] We have an Asana checklist to make sure we have everything we need from our contractors, and that they're provided with access to what they need. [27:00] Agree on how often you'll meet and if it will be virtual or in person. Provide your voice and brand guides up front to avoid extra editing. [30:34] Ask how they prefer to receive feedback and share your feedback style. [39:45] We use Asana to set up projects and tasks for contractors. Include all of the necessary support documents and be as specific as possible. [45:16] Make sure they create their work on your Google drive. You want access to all of your stuff created by them. [48:27] Action steps: Get clear on the hours and budget. Begin your search and onboard with everything I've shared. Give them a project test run.
