This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief rides into the shadow of Pikes Peak to sit down with Paul Dunning from 13th Century Whiskey in beautiful Colorado Springs.   Paul has built something truly unique in the whiskey world — a brand where every bottle is part of the experience. Each handcrafted release features a blown glass figure inside, from copper stills and aging barrels to incredible wildlife designs, making these bottles true shelf pieces and instant conversation starters.   Crafted at the base of Pikes Peak, 13th Century Whiskey ages its spirits in small 30-gallon barrels, creating bold cask-strength pours packed with flavor while remaining remarkably smooth.   Big Chief kicks things off with the Reserve Rye at 143 proof — unfiltered and unapologetic. Dark caramel, black pepper, baking spice, and toasted oak explode from the glass before finishing with a long warming spice.   He then moves to the Reserve Bourbon at 142.2 proof to close out the first half. Vanilla bean, maple syrup, dark cherry, and caramelized sugar coat the palate with a rich oily mouthfeel that drinks far smoother than the proof suggests.   On the second half, Big Chief pours the Cigar Blend — a toasted barrel-finished bourbon at 141 proof — and immediately gets transported back to childhood campfires and s'mores. Toasted marshmallow, graham cracker, melted chocolate, espresso, and charred oak create one unforgettable pour.   To finish the ride, Big Chief pours their American Single Malt at 134.4 proof, which quickly became the star of the show. Honey, toasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate-covered raisins, and subtle smoke deliver a rich and balanced finish that refused to quit.   Throughout the episode, Paul shares the story behind building 13th Century Whiskey, the inspiration behind the unforgettable bottles, and the passion required to stand apart in today's whiskey world.   Take the Ride. Cheers.

Threading through all of it is a shared philosophy: community built on genuine stoke beats anything you can sell, and the best events are often born from a group of people drinking beer and throwing darts at a crazy idea until it works. Segment 1 – 44:42 to 47:00 | Jeremy’s Day Job: Teaching, Cooking, and Community Jeremy describes his 27-year career as an MPS teacher and his current role running a real working cafe with special needs students at the teacher training center – today’s special: chicken pot pie. Segment 3 – 53:30 to 57:10 | Sign-Up Day Entertainment: Vaudeville, Gong Show, and the Line Experience The group discusses plans to turn the RW24 registration line into a variety show – somewhere between vaudeville, the Gong Show, and the Muppets – with Jeremy MCing. Segment 4 – 57:10 to 1:01:30 | Podcast Philosophy: DIY vs. Monetization Jeremy shares his own motorcycle podcast (Flat-Out Friday / Mama Tried) and the group wrestles with the tension between staying punk rock and actually making the economics work. Sven recalls the heyday of scripted Weekly Dose of Fat episodes with 3,500 listeners vs. the current no-edit approach. Segment 5 – 1:01:30 to 1:05:30 | Punk Rock Roots and Milwaukee Basement Shows The conversation digs into Milwaukee’s basement show scene, Jeremy’s punk rock community entry point, Tony’s backyard as a venue, and the visiting Iowa wrestlers who couldn’t believe what they’d walked into. Segment 6 – 1:05:30 to 1:09:30 | Community as a Core Value: “Bowling Alone” and Catholic Guilt Jeremy connects his lifelong drive to organize – hockey, Jiu-Jitsu, motorcycles, music – to a deeper need for community. References the book “Bowling Alone,” his altar boy days, and the irony of Catholic guilt as a motivator. Segment 7 – 1:09:30 to 1:17:30 | The Origin of Flat-Out Friday: From MECCA to the Bradley Center Jeremy tells the full unlikely story: a whiskey-and-Dr.-Pepper car ride where Scott from Fuel floated the idea for Mama Tried, Jeremy collecting $5 tickets at a door he showed up 30 minutes late to, renting the MECCA Arena and watching them rip the covers off extra seats because more people showed up than expected, losing that slot to the circus, getting blocked out of the Bradley Center, and finally getting a cold call from promoter Raj who said yes because he knew Riverwest 24. Segment 8 – 1:17:30 to 1:21:15 | Milwaukee Music Connective Tissue: Mike Maccabee, Dub, and Veggas Bar A detour through music – solo performer Mike McAbee (who plays 3 hours straight because “when I stop, everyone leaves”), Max Knoll’s loud reggae sets, dub music as a full-body experience, and the shared language of Milwaukee’s underground scene. Segment 9 – 1:21:15 to 1:26:19 | Wrap-Up, Upcoming Events, and the New Bar on the Block The hosts thank Jeremy. Upcoming items include the Milwaukee Fat Tire Tour, Riverwest 24 registration, a Goddamn Gallows show at Cooperage, and the newly opened (and apparently controversial) Diaspora bar – dropping on Milwaukee Day, 414. Rome wasn't built in a day, but Disneyland was built in a year. Crafted by hand, it was put together by hard workers, under crazy circumstances, and questionable conditions. An outlandish dream became a reality, and it was all caught on film. For the first time, we can lay our eyes on a new perspective of how Disneyland was handcrafted, fake brick by fake brick thanks to Leslie Iwerks and the Disney Archives. Kwadwo Som-Pimpong started making furniture in 2015 because he bought a house with no furniture and decided to build his own. A decade later, he runs Crafted Glory, a small-batch luxury furniture brand blending West African artistry with Scandinavian design, while working 10-hour shifts at Eaton as a fabrication supervisor. In this episode, Chris sits down with Kwadwo to trace the journey from those first end tables built in a garage to a full-scale business. The conversation covers how Kwadwo manages the constraints of four to five hours in the shop each day, including three strategies he has put in place, a clipboard for tracking time and tasks, using Claude to reflect and connect the dots on the 40-minute drive home, and a networking story from New York that turned one photo on Instagram into a series of interior design projects. He also walks through the Echoes of the Forest project, two pieces made from trees uprooted by Hurricane Helene, one already installed in Biltmore Forest Town Hall and one headed for Asheville's historic YMI Cultural Center. In this episode, find out: How Kwadwo got into furniture making in 2015 out of necessity, moving into a house with no furniture and discovering he'd rather build his own, and how that organic beginning grew into Crafted Glory How his dual engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon gives him the mindset and the resilience to keep working through problems that feel unsolvable What he observed visiting Hellman Chang's manufacturing plant in Georgia, component part numbers, scan systems, work cells, and 5S, and how it changed what scaling from craft to production can look like while keeping the handmade element intact How 12 years as a fabrication supervisor at Eaton translated directly into running his own team, applying method sheets and time studies, and building standard operations that let someone else step in and do what he does The three strategies he uses to manage four to five hours of shop time per day alongside a 10-hour shift: a clipboard for time tracking, Claude for end-of-day reflection, and deliberate networking that turned one New York visit into a pipeline of interior design projects The Echoes of the Forest project, how Hurricane Helene uprooted thousands of trees across Asheville and led to two commissions: a mantle from a fallen walnut tree installed in Biltmore Forest Town Hall, and an outdoor bench headed for the historic YMI Cultural Center Enjoying the show? Please leave us a review here. Even one sentence helps. It's feedback from Manufacturing All-Stars like you that keeps us going! Tweetable Quotes: “Now I see where I'm spending my time, I see how long each piece takes me. If I know the time, that translates into my pricing. If I get my pricing right, that moves me closer to being free from working another job.” “I use AI a lot in helping with organization — Claude specifically. At the end of the day, on my 40-minute drive home, I dictate what happened in the studio, my reflections, the challenges I faced. I love how Claude draws connections and builds on your whole story, your whole journey.” “I aspire to have an operation where I still maintain the craft element of what I'm doing, but it is systematized such that I can step away, bring someone in, train them to the documentation, and they can come in and do the same thing that I do.” Links & mentions: Crafted Glory, small batch luxury handmade furniture brand that crafts sustainable hardwood artistic furniture inspired by West African artistry and Scandanavian design Biscuit Head, an incredible biscuit-centric breakfast joint with roots in Asheville, NC Make sure to visit http://manufacturinghappyhour.com for detailed show notes and a full list of resources mentioned in this episode. Quynh Nguyen, Jessie Chu, and Sara Kim are paper flower artists, educators, and co-founders of a mastermind built specifically for creative makers. In this episode, they share why story — not just skill — is what separates thriving artists from those who stay invisible. We also dig into why the creative maker market is a surprisingly powerful niche for video professionals to explore, and what it really takes to just start showing up on camera. Key Takeaways Sharing your story isn't optional — your audience is already guessing what your brand is about, so you might as well tell them yourself. The creative maker market (paper artists, ceramicists, makers of all kinds) produces inherently beautiful visuals and is actively looking for videographers who get them. You don't learn until you launch — waiting for the perfect setup or the perfect script just delays the growth that only comes from doing. A mastermind works best when the leaders model vulnerability first — that's what gives members permission to open up and be honest about their struggles. About Quynh, Jessie, Sara Three artists. Two countries. One mission: to build a thriving, honest, and supportive community for paper flower artists around the world. Together they bring backgrounds in law, music performance, culinary arts, marketing and logistics. They are proof that creative entrepreneurs come from everywhere. Paper Talk was born in 2017 when Quynh and Jessie could not find a community of crepe paper flower artists online and decided to build one themselves. What started as a Facebook group became a global community of makers, a podcast with 250,000 downloads, three published books, a YouTube channel with 73,500 subscribers, and brand partnerships with some of the most recognizable names in the creative industry. None of that happened without video. In This Episode [00:00:00] Welcome to the show! Being able to tell them why you're doing this — that's what stands out." — Jessie Chu "Your ideal clients need you to show up for them. If you're holding back by not showing up on video, you're holding back the thing you're made to do." — Ryan Koral "My first video is so cringy to watch — but I don't take it down, because without that first video, I wouldn't be where I am now." — Sara Kim "In the last 10 weeks of sharing my real story — vulnerable, personal stuff — I've gotten more comments, DMs, and people stopping me in public than in the last two years combined." — Ryan Koral Guest Links Find Quynh Nguyen (Pink & Posey) online - Website | @pinkandposey on socials Find Jessie Chu (Crafted to Bloom) online - Website | @jessie.choo on socials Find Sara Kim online (Handmade by Sara) - @handmadebysakim on socials Explore Paper Talk Podcast Links Find out more about the Studio Sherpas Mastermind Join the Grow Your Video Business Facebook Group  Follow Ryan Koral on Instagram Follow Grow Your Video Business on Instagram Join the Studio Sherpas newsletter

Marriage Made Me a Philosopher

Uncut Poetry

Marriage: it was the end of all illusions and the beginning of philosophy:   marriage was a lesson in impermanence - not an idea, a daily unfolding.   To remain calm in storms not of my making. Dinner is late.       Plans change.           Cushions are moved. I nod, smile, adapt. an ardent disciple of Aurelius.   Closet space shrinks mysteriously. my belongings become philosophical concepts.   Arguments teach a truth: words are insufficient.   “Where do you want to eat?” “Anywhere.” (Anywhere is wrong.) And I discover the absurd as Camus sighs in his grave.   I broach the thesis: “Let's watch a movie.” I receive the antithesis: “Let's talk.” And confront the synthesis: talk about why no movie is being watched.   “What did I do wrong?” “I don't know.” But something is wrong. And thus begins a lifelong inquiry into metaphysics -   what can truly be known?   I examine questions of existentialism: what gives life meaning? Choice?      Duty?          Love?   I lay in bed, see the fan whirl, and ask - what is love, bereft of drama? what is self, when it must bend? what is happiness, when it must be shared?   What, indeed, is life, when it seeks surrender, but masquerades as gift.   Essay: I sometimes feel that a philosopher dissects the deeper meanings of life, only to figure out that it is meaningless.   And invariably, it has to do with human interaction, thought, foibles, decisions, reactions. And within the rigour of its investigation and compulsions is the real time change which humans wrought on each other.   Marriage is the ultimate test of change and resilience. Crafted inside the crucible of love, it continuously tests the human power to forbear, resist, surrender and claim victory in survival.   A less cynical view would view the wedded journey as a partnership which keeps on recalibrating itself until it hits a rhythm and a seamless marching cadence.   In actuality it is a flawed construct, with a societal burden of "till death do us part". Which of course provides a longevity to breeding, rearing and mutual survival, but comes up wanting in providing universal succour.   We are complex creatures. Feeling, hurt, chemistry, comfort, vulnerability, ego, belief, residual memory, remembrance, all swirl inside us like a Milky Way seeking their pre-eminence. And invariably coming up short when sought singularly. Luckily we are social creatures , necessarily living in a world which won't exist if not for cohabitation and coexistence.   Thus ironically, the most successful marriages are the ones which recognise this need and build an ecosystem of relationships rather than one rooted in ownership, bound in jealousy, and closeted in insecurity.   And just this musing is what makes a simple man transition into philosophy.   Unknowingly, a man walks into marriage a simple human being  and walks out wiser.   If you liked this poem, consider listening to these other poems on marriage and its consequences -  She's a Fierce One, My One Love's Night of the Long Knives How She Knew (that he was unfaithful) Subscribe to my newsletter 'The Uncuts' Follow me on Instagram at @sunilgivesup. Thank you! Please vote for FAFO! ---OK, on to today's episode… it's another good vibes rooftop episode recorded at SXSW. For the second year in a row I'm joined by Rob Kenedi, a fellow podcaster, who is the founder and host of Decelerator. Last year he, very memorably, said we were in the “fart app era of AI”. Meaning: people are trying stuff (a la the make-a-fart-sound apps that people built in the early days of the iPhone). So, we revisit that comment and ask where are we now? And what's defensible for app makers — and for creators like us?Podcaster that he is, Rob turns the tables on me and asks me a bunch of questions about how I'm approaching this question and I shared what was top of mind when I rebranded the show recently from CRAFTED. to Future Around & Find Out. Namely, I wanted to give the show more personality, but that is how you stand out right now and that's what going to be defensible in the age of AI. And the Webby nomination — you already voted, right?? — only makes me feel more confident in the rebrand and the addition of more of these casual “FAFO Friday” episodes that feature a lot more of my (and regular guest Kwaku Aning's) personality. (You'll hear more about how AI is changing the creator economy and why “being human” is so important in a few days when my episode with Jim Louderback, writer of Inside the Creator Economy, comes out; he gives a great annual talk at SXSW and I had seen it the day before recording with Rob.)In the meantime, come join Rob and me for some good vibes from Austin… And (ask your friends to) vote: https://vote.webbyawards.com/PublicVoting#/2026/podcasts/shows/technology

Top mountain guide certifications (like AMGA and IFMGA) have a pass rate of around 70%. But what if we told you that in the wine world, the most rigorous certifications have a pass rate that's only about 8% — and it's often lower than that. The certifications of ‘Master Sommelier' and ‘Master of Wine' are two of the most demanding in any field. And our guest today, Doug Frost, is one of only three people in the world to hold both.So Doug and Eli dig into what makes these courses so challenging; the differences between the two; and, most importantly, why they matter. We Are Eternal - Unus Mundus (Original Mix) SofaBeats SOFABEATS172 1. We Are Eternal - Spiraling Upward (Original Mix) 2. We Are Eternal - Unus Mundus (Original Mix) We Are Eternal returns to Sofa Beats with a new release that seamlessly blends trance, mid-tempo electronics, and tribal organic instrumentation. The music reflects larger-scale cosmic processes and human ascension in this context. Spiraling Upward stands out as a mid-tempo stomper rooted in psytech aesthetics. A driving kick and bassline merge with swampy textures, signature FM structures, and organic rhythms. Its punchy groove provides a deep sense of grounding, while a second – parallel bassline adds extra weight and support. Melodies and chord progressions— inspired by Icelandic landscapes and Scandinavian soundscapes— gradually unfold into a powerful arp lead that seems to spiral upward. Guided by the breath of a Native American flute, the journey invites dancers into deep cosmic exploration. Unus Mundus draws inspiration from dreamy, dusty dub techno soundscapes, gradually building momentum through a determined kick and bass foundation. Organic syncopated rhythms and ethereal flute atmospheres blend with lush pads and angelic female vocals, guiding dancers toward a drop where a profound and surprising message from the future awaits. From there, the music unfolds into a trance-infused cosmic journey. Crafted for deep festival and club dance floors, the release carries the intention of expanding consciousness through connection with higher cosmic realities.

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Stradivarius violins, cellos, and guitars are among the most treasured musical instruments in the world. Crafted during the 17th and 18th centuries, the pieces are rare and invaluable. Something so precious deserves the utmost care. So, when a Stradivarius cello—worth more than $20 million—fell off a table during a photo shoot, it was truly shocking! Just as a Stradivarius must be handled carefully, so must our relationships. We’re to love others because Christ demonstrated His love toward us. In John 13:34, Jesus gave His disciples a command that requires careful attention: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” Why did Christ call it a new command? It was new because it was rooted in the way Jesus loved people. This new command to love wasn’t careless or casual but intentional, precious, and sacrificial. Loving this way would lead to discipleship, self-denial, and possibly even death for the disciples. This care for one another would be how they survived in a difficult and hostile world after Christ’s departure. And Jesus told them, “Everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (v. 35). Let’s carefully and sacrificially love others—reflecting Jesus’ precious and priceless love.
