If you've ever wondered about the inner workings of events like XOXO, World Domination Summit, Sneaker Week, and the One Motorcycle Show, you're in for a treat. Our guest this week, Rachel Coddington, shares the deets on how small teams can manage such large events and handle controversies with grace and poise.Guest BioRachel Coddington currently works alongside the vibrant minds at Instrument, creating more meaningful experiences across disciplines and skill levels. Her passion lies in formatting moments of togetherness to be accessible and inclusive- which frequently means integrating technology with a more thoughtful lens. She has spent the last 10 years creating and managing events, both independently—XOXO, World Domination Summit, Sneaker Week PDX, One Motorcycle Show—and through Design Week Portland as their Managing Director. She prides herself on creating seamless, entertaining, incendiary events with enthusiasm, skill and experience. Key Topics and Takeaways0:03:58 - Event Curation and Experiential DesignRachel touches on two key aspects of event planning and curation. First, she emphasizes the importance of supporting event curators by taking care of logistical details, such as speaker arrangements and accommodations, to allow them to focus on content and experience creation. Second, Rachel underscores the significance of deeply understanding event attendees. This involves not only their interests but also their physical, social, and psychological needs, such as catering to introverts, individuals with social anxiety, and parents with children.0:17:50 - Security and Inclusion at EventsWe talk about XOXO's response to an online harassments campaign targeting one of their speakers. Rachel walks us through the security measures put in place, including the identification of key individuals and potential threats. We also look at extra steps events can take to create space for attendees when an event touches on difficult topics.0:33:28 - Managing an event team with honesty and empathyRachel shares how she strikes a balance between empathy and reality when managing an event team within a large event agency like Instrument. How do we show compassion for a situation and provide what is feasible while being truthful about the company's needs? We also discuss the pros and cons of working for an agency, vs being an independent event producer.Want to dive deeper? Take our free 30 minute training, Community Event Mastery. This episode originally aired on April 13, 2018. We’re playing some of our favorite episodes this fall, looking back on all the things we made over six years of State of Wonder. Today’s is something special we did for Design Week Portland. When you start to pay attention to design, you tune in to all kinds of unspoken rules and understandings that are part of how things are made. If you haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about how Native style gets used - and often mis-used in graphic design, fashion, and other disciplines - I guarantee you won’t be able to un-see it after today’s conversation. Thanks for listening.

Sit back for a deep-dive at the big-picture issues shaping the built environment.[slideshow: design-week-at-the-nightwood-society,left,5ada733e9245030158d5cd95]Cultivating Creative Space at the Nightwood - 1:55Michelle Battista is the founder of the Nightwood Society, the collective of women creating a safe space for artists and designers to come together to learn and share their skills. Their unique event space, the Nightwood, is hosting parties of every kind and offering ways to widen your foodie skill set. Some of the events the Nightwood Society have put on include tastings for Oregon-grown olive oil, top-drawer chefs cooking to raise money for Puerto Rico, wine tastings that spill over into secret locations — even classes on how to butcher a hog or chicken. Battista talks to us about founding Nightwood and her ethos.Designing With Women: Anyeleh Hallová and Amy Donohue - 7:57There's no end to new development in Portland right now. But many of those impressive new buildings can look different, depending on who's doing the looking. The fields of real estate development and architecture are mostly male. We talked to two people about how the design process is different with women involved. Anyeleh Hallová is partner at the Portland firm project. Her latest act involves a high-rise made of wood. Amy Donohue is a principal with Bora Architects. She has a special feel for the places where people learn. They spoke to us about projects they worked on.Tranformative Office Space at Swift - 26:26Portland is full of successful design agencies, but few shine as brightly as Swift. Started by Alicia McVey and Liz Valentine in 2006, it has grown to 140 people, 65 percent of whom are women. Of course, a fabulous company needs a fabulous office, and two years back, Swift set their eyes on an old awning factory in Northwest industrial Portland. We spoke with McVey and Swift's Chief Talent Officer Maren Elliott about designing the building, and what's different in an office where architecture deconstructs hierarchy.Reconstituted Sugar: Hacienda CDC Creates Las Adelitas - 40:43A blighted corner of the Cully neighborhood is about to get a big makeover. It’s Design Week in Portland! The week when all of the makers, the tallest and the smallest, get together to talk about the looks they love, the technology they’re using, and the newest concepts and products they're dreaming up. From streetwear to downtown Portland to sporting goods to candy, everything's on the drawing board. We started out the festival last week with a live Think Out Loud show at the Redd, an old industrial building in Southeast Portland that's serving as DWP's headquarters. This week, we're packaging some of those interviews together with new reported stories from the rest of the fest.JavHack: Reimagining Sports Ergonomics - 5:48You might not think the javelin needs innovation. It worked for four-hundred thousand years of human history, right? But track and field athletes are always pushing the limits. We spoke with record-breaking javelin thrower Tom Petronoff about the need for a new design vision and the time he almost speared Alberto Salazar. You can see videos of some high-class javelin chucking and a vintage clip of Tom Petranoff narrated by Caitlin Jenner here. Cutting Edge Pixels with the Annual Animation Challenge - 10:04Jamal Qutub has been in love with animation since he was a kid. For work, he creates animations for clients like Adidas and Intel, but in his spare time, Qutub runs AEPDX, a meetup group for local animators. For the past three years, Qutub has been putting together an animation challenge during Design Week. Local animators submit short films to be viewed and voted on by an audience of their peers and interested DWP spectators.Portland's Highline? A Proposed Park that Wants to Change How You See the City - 18:04Last year, Design Week featured a challenge to design a 6-mile linear park circling downtown Portland called the Green Loop. Now the winners, Untitled Studio, are taking the conceptual idea one step further with an interactive exhibit as part of this year’s festival. They stop in to tell us about their big dreams and why Portland needs the Green Loop.QUIN Candy's Magical Confections - 30:42What could be better at the end of Design Week Portland than dessert? Jami Curl told a sweet story on Friday about how she built two successful companies, QUIN Candy and Saint Cupcake, that stand out in the forest of Portland food brands. We visited her at her QUIN Candy production room this week and heard all about her candy-design.Design in the Forest: Maya Lin's Bird Blind - 37:33So many design stories originate on desktops and drafting tables, but we found one that must be experienced with hiking boots on. While Design Week took out a busload of explorers, we headed out to explore the Sandy River Delta with biologist Bill Weiler, Confluence Project member Colin Fogarty and designer Dylan Woock. In 2004, the Confluence Project kicked off with the goal of connecting people with places in the Columbia Basin. Confluence’s renowned artist and designer Maya Lin took on this challenge, and created an elliptical immersive sculpture out of wood and metal that blends effortlessly into the terrain. Portland At-Risk Youth Create Streetwear Label – 43:45“Don’t just rise, take flight” is the tagline of streetwear label dfrntpigeon, which is a collaboration between the non-profit New Avenues for Youth and branding gurus AKQA. Run by marginalized and homeless youth, the agency designs and sells shirts and apparel that are expressive, political, sometimes humorous, and sometimes dark. They’ve just released their newest line of tees, The Identity Collection, with screen printed shirts like “Humanity,” which shows four forearms holding a cigarette, a grenade, an hourglass, and a digital clock, surrounded by a ring of flowers.

We all know great connectors in our home turfs. These are the people who, at the drop of a hat, know how to get the right people together, to talk about the right things for all the right reasons. Tsilli Pines, founder and director of (the excellent) Design Week Portland (DWP), is certainly one of Portland’s connection mavens. She possesses the uncanny skill and intuition to draw the lines between people in disparate disciplines to create magic. This gift is likely one of the reasons that DWP is a “must-attend” week, not just for design people, but for anyone who likes to be part of something bigger than themselves. A designer by trade as digital creative director at Fine in Portland, Pines doesn’t just spread the gospel of design but broader creativity as host and organizer of Creative Mornings, the global lecture series darling. Pines, like most who show honest leadership, is a renaissance person by nature and often has her fingers on the pulse of many things at any given time. Multitasking keeps it fresh — and her hometown of Portland inspires a sense of collaboration and balance, where the community comes together. A native Northern Californian, Pines feels strongly that dues are to be paid, one must put skin in the game for the right rewards and that, early in ones career, leaning towards “yes” is the right plan of action. At the heart of it all, though, it’s all about getting out there and legitimately making things happen.

She has this fantastic way of explaining what works and why, and she’s going to lead us through her own work and the designed world, from parking meters to space ships.User Experience 101 - 01:08We kick off with a quick primer on UX. Whether you’re talking about everyday objects or brand new apps, solid design is anything but accidental. Elena explains why some brands stand out. Take Uber, for example. Whatever you may think of the company’s business practices, the interface of the Uber app is a gold standard for how to serve up visual information.Portland’s Parking Meters: Design Fail? - 05:04We explore how design is in play in even the simplest of tasks. Elena and April scout out a hub of meter activity in the Pearl District and speak with some of the people who maintain the meters, technicians Anto Bayu Aji and Molly Twoohey. How to Teach Grandmothers to Install Solar Panels - 15:20UX isn’t just for software. Elena talks about working on a project with India’s Barefoot College on a project that trained grandmothers to do their own solar engineering in rural communities in India. How can teachers work across language barriers? How do you keep learning going after everyone heads home to their village? As Elena explains, the conversation gave rise to some unexpected answers. How Do You Improve on the Coolest Hotel in Town? - 20:10We eavesdrop on Elena’s meeting with the Ace Hotel design team for a look inside the design process. The company already has a robust brand and online presence, but it enlisted Elena to help refine the experience of visiting its website. What’s most intuitive to potential customers?Designers' Film Club - 25:55A few years ago, Elena and her partner, Jos Vaught, had the chance to work on some UX projects for NASA and SpaceX. Can a designer who’s seen a real space capsule interface ever look at Ridley Scott the same way again? We reality-check "The Martian,” “Minority Report,” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness.”On the Designers Shelf Life and the Accumulated Wisdom of Fly Fishing - 36:20It’s no secret that, within tech circles, the industry is not kind to workers over 35. Elena contrasts this for us with another discipline in which practitioners don’t get anywhere without decades of hard-won knowledge: fly fishing. We head out to Maupin with seasoned guide Amy Hazel of Deschutes Angler to find out about the beauty and craft to be found on the river. Are Tiny Hobbit Homes the Way of the Future? - 45:58Elena turned us on to the amazing work of Abel Zimmerman Zyl: the totally charming gypsy caravans that look plucked right out of "The Hobbit." We discuss the concept of leaving a legacy, its impact on motivation, and the rewards of reaching out to those you admire and respect.
