BFA Photography and Video and DEAR DAVE, magazine present artist Roe Ethridge discussing his recently published book Shelter Island (Mack Books) with Kevin Moore. The monograph features photographs from a summer vacation Ethridge took with his family to Long Island, where they rented an all-American kit house and discovered the relics of the previous owners. Roe Ethridge lives and works in New York, and his work has been shown at museums and institutions around the world, including MoMA PS1 (2000), the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2005), the Whitney Biennial (2008) and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2010). Kevin Moore is an independent advisor, curator and writer based in New York whose work focuses on the history of photography and contemporary art. Since 2013, Moore is the artistic director and curator of FOTOFOCUS, Cincinnati.

BFA Photography and Video and DEAR DAVE, magazine present artist Domingo Milella in conversation with department chair and DEAR DAVE, editor Stephen Frailey discussing his recently published monograph, Domingo Milella (Steidl, 2015), which is a photographic journey from his hometown on the outskirts of Bari, Italy, to cities and regions across the world. Milella chronicles the overlap between civilization and nature, and how landscape and architecture are invested with individual and collective memory.

BFA Photography and Video and DEAR DAVE, magazine present artist and SVA faculty member Joseph Maida in conversation with Eva Respini, the Barbara Lee Chief Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, discussing work in his recently published monograph, New Natives (L’Artiere).

Author of the recently published Wagstaff: Before and After Mapplethorpe (Liveright, 2014) Philip Gefter discusses photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, the collector Sam Wagstaff and the influence of the “gay sensibility” in photography.

Rachel Sussman (BFA 1998 Photography) discusses her epic 10-year project, The Oldest Living Things in the World, with Maria Popova, a writer, blogger and critic known for her blog, BrainPickings.org. Sussman researched, worked with biologists and traveled around the world to find living organisms 2,000 years old and older. The book contains 124 photographs, 30 essays, infographics and forewords by Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Carl Zimmer. Sussman is a contemporary artist based in Brooklyn. Her photographs and writing have been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, and NPR's Picture Show. She has spoken on the TED main stage and at the Long Now Foundation, is a MacDowell Colony and NYFA Fellow and is a trained member of Al Gore's Climate Reality Leadership Corps. Her first book, The Oldest Living Things in the World (University of Chicago, 2014), will be released on April 22, and a major solo exhibition of the project will open at Pioneer Works in September. Popova is the founder and editor of Brain Pickings, an inventory of cross-disciplinary interests spanning art, science, design, history, philosophy, psychology and more. She has written for Wired (UK), The Atlantic, Nieman Journalism Lab, The New York Times, Smithsonian and Design Observer, and is an MIT Fellow. She is on Twitter as @brainpicker.

Photographer Katie Murray discusses her project All the Queens Men (Daylight Books 2013) and her recent video Gazelle, currently on view at The Photographer's Gallery in London. A conversation with contemporary photographers Joseph Maida and Dan Torop as well as art critic and historian Maika Pollack will follow.

Photographer Elinor Carucci and curator and writer Susan Bright discuss Carucci's latest monograph, Mother (Prestel, 2013); "Home Truths: Photography, Motherhood and Identity" and "Home Truths: Photography, Motherhood and Loss," two exhibitions curated by Bright that include Carucci's work and run concurrently in London in October; and Bright's book, Home Truths: Photography and Motherhood (Art/Books/Photographers' Gallery, 2013). All projects share a common purpose: exploring the rewards and ramifications of motherhood.
