Walk up to sentimentality but don't become it. -- Larry Sultan If you like something that someone is doing, tell them!  -- Todd Hido   In this episode, Antonio kicks things off with a hands-on review of the Fujifilm X-M5, a compact, feature-packed mirrorless camera that's quickly become a favorite. He shares his impressions after testing it during the Lunar New Year celebrations in Chinatown, highlighting its speedy autofocus, convenient film simulation dial, and the nostalgic charm of the silver-top design. While the lack of a viewfinder presents some challenges in bright conditions, Antonio praises the camera's versatility—especially when paired with manual lenses and a fun little retro flash he recently picked up. Two thumbs up! Ward recounts a recent encounter with acclaimed photographer Todd Hido, who visited Calgary for a public talk. Ward recounts Hido's approachable, candid style and reveals some interesting behind-the-scenes tricks, like using glycerin on windshields for a rain-soaked effect. They discuss the emotional depth of Hido's work and the compelling presentation of his new book The End Sends Advance Warning, with its large-format images and translucent family-photo insert. The episode wraps with Ward's recap of his trip to Daytona for the 24-hour endurance race, where he had rare access to pit lane and behind-the-scenes action. Armed with a telephoto lens borrowed from Antonio, Ward describes the challenges of capturing high-speed cars at night, with the blur of headlights and motion adding an artistic dimension to the shots. He shares how the event's unique lighting conditions pushed his ISO settings to their limits and gave him a chance to experiment with different shutter speeds and compositions. From sleek Ferraris under the lights to candid moments in the pits, Ward reflects on the thrill of documenting a world where precision and speed are everything—both on and off the track.   Subscribe to our Substack Newsletter Help out the show by buying us a coffee! Born in Indiana and raised in Wisconsin, Joe is a son of the American heartland. As a child, he wasn't pointing a camera or standing in front of one; he was the blabber-mouth recruiting neighborhood talent to help tell his stories. Not much has changed since then. "When I was six, I destroyed my grandfather's brand new Hi8 camcorder by blasting him in the face with a super soaker. This work is my atonement." Matt Hoodhood was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI where his fascination with light began. He studied Cinematography at Columbia College Chicago and has been living in Los Angeles since 2014 where he enjoys the great outdoors, playing folk music on the banjo, and photography (Todd Hido, Alex Webb, and Diane Arbus are some of his favorites). Erin Kobrin is a Los Angeles-based wardrobe stylist and costume designer known for crafting distinctive looks across fashion campaigns, editorials, music projects, and narrative storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the visionary artistry of Colleen Atwood and the rebellious elegance of Vivienne Westwood, Erin brings a bold and imaginative perspective to every project. A 63. adás vendége Láng Péter és Lénárt Gábor fotográfusok, a Tripodcast műsorvezetői. Külön-külön és párban is rendkívül szimpatikus fiatalemberek, az alkalmazott fotográfia kiválóságai, akik rengeteg energiával, alázattal és állandó fejlődni akarással űzik hivatásukat. Hozzáállásuk példával szolgálhat mindazok számára, akik életvitelszerűen szeretnék művelni a fotográfiát. "Photography books often have titles like The Photographer's Eye or The Vision of So and So or Seeing Photographs — as if photographers didn't have minds, only eyes." -- Duane Michals “A book is like a piece of music; it has a beginning and an end, but what happens in between is up to you.” -- Stephen Shore   In this episode, Antonio talks about connecting with his new Fujifilm X100VI camera during a photo walk around New York City. He reflects on how much he enjoys shooting with this camera, which feels just right in his hands and helps him capture the energy of the city. As fall sets in and the days get shorter, he's planning to head back out for some night photography, especially around the bright lights of Times Square. Ward shares his recent experience photographing the Pride parade in Calgary. He usually shoots in black and white but decided to switch things up and capture the parade's vibrant colors. It turned out to be a lively and colorful event, full of energy and emotion, and gave him a new perspective on his work. He also took a vintage Rolleicord camera to a local car show, revisiting the slower, more thoughtful process of shooting medium format film. These experiences got him thinking about how different settings and equipment can change the way you see and capture the world. The guys also talk about their latest finds in photo books. Antonio shares his experience attending the ICP Photo Book Fest in New York City, where picked up some new titles including Todd Hido's "On Landscapes, Interiors, and the Nude", which explores the emotional impact of color and composition, and Trent Parke's "Minutes to Midnight", which offers a stark, striking view of life in Australia. He also discusses his motivations for selecting specific books and how they can aid in teaching photography. Ward also talks about a local photography book launch event he attended, featuring the work of pure mathematician and photographer Arturo Pianzola. He also brings up "Eight Seconds: Black Rodeo Culture" by Ivan McClellan, a book that dives into the unique and underrepresented world of Black rodeo. He describes the vivid color photographs that capture the people, culture, and atmosphere of this often-overlooked part of American life. The book opened his eyes to a new side of rodeo culture, adding another layer to his understanding of photography's role in telling diverse stories.   Subscribe to our Substack Newsletter Help out the show by buying us a coffee! In this episode of PhotoWork with Sasha Wolf, Sasha interviews photographer Todd Hido about his latest book, "The End Sends Advance Warning," published by Nazraeli Press. They explore how the book defies its title, focusing instead on themes of hope and beauty. Additionally, they discuss the creation of Todd's recent survey show at Casemore Gallery, which is the most extensive presentation of his work to date. Despite being a returning guest, Todd shares fresh insights about his mentors and his deep passion for photography, and he announces a new book towards the end of the episode. http://www.toddhido.com | https://www.nazraeli.com/complete-catalogue/the-end-sends-advance-warning | https://casemoregallery.com/exhibitions/56-todd-hido-some-polar-expiation-an-enormous-cat-a-complete/overview/ Todd Hido (born in Kent, Ohio, 1968) wanders endlessly, taking lengthy road trips in search of imagery that connects with his own memories. Through his unique landscape process and signature color palette, Hido alludes to the quiet and mysterious side of suburban America—where uniform communities provide for a stable façade—implying the instability that often lies behind the walls. His photographs are in over 50 private and public collections around the world, including the Getty, Whitney Museum of American Art, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Pier 24 Photography holds the archive of all of his published works. Hido has published more than a dozen books, including the award-winning monographs House Hunting(2001) and Excerpts from Silver Meadows (2013). His Aperture titles include Todd Hido on Landscapes, Interiors, and the Nude (2014) and Intimate Distance: Twenty-Five Years of Photographs (2016). He returned to the cinematic landscape photography that he first explored with Roaming (2003) with Bright Black World(2018), and followed it up with The End Sends Advance Warning (2024). Hido is also an avid photobook collector, and in the last 30 years has created a notable collection of over 8,500 titles. His work has influenced multiple Hollywood productions, such as Spike Jones's Her, Sam Levinson's Euphoria, Issa López's True Detective: Night Country, and the upcoming directorial project by Jason Momoa, Chief of War. He is also one of the subjects of Momoa's documentary project on creative makers, On The Roam. This podcast is sponsored by picturehouse + thesmalldarkroom. https://phtsdr.com

In this episode of PhotoWork with Sasha Wolf, we rewind to episode 6 where Sasha and photographer, Todd Hido, have a wide-ranging conversation about Todd's roles as an artist and an educator. Todd shares his ideas about how students should follow the John Cage rule and “ Find a place you trust and try trusting it for a while”, and how, as a student himself, he had to push back against a critique to make his work less subjective! Todd and Sasha find common ground through cinematic influences and the desire for hope as a motivator to keep working. There is much to love and learn from in this episode as Hido is extremely generous with his hard won wisdom. http://www.toddhido.com Todd Hido is a San Francisco Bay Area-based artist whose work has been featured in Artforum, The New York Times Magazine, Eyemazing, Wired, Elephant, FOAM, and Vanity Fair. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Getty, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the de Young Museum, the Smithsonian, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as in many other public and private collections. Aperture has published his mid-career survey entitled Intimate Distance: Twenty-Five Years of Photographs, a Chronological Album in October of 2016. His latest book, Bright Black World, was released by Nazraeli Press in 2019. In addition to Hido being an artist, he is also a collector and over the last 25 years has created one of the most notable photobook collections. "In the streets and in society I am almost invariably cheap and dissipated, my life is unspeakably mean. But alone in the distant woods or fields, even in a bleak and, to most, cheerless day, I come to myself, I once more feel myself grandly related, and that cold and solitude are friends of mine. I wish to get the Concord, the Massachusetts, the America, out of my head and be sane a part of every day." —Henry David Thoreau, Journal, 1855 This is the penultimate episode of CABIN, which will conclude with Ep. 11. "So I agree with the anarcho-primitivists that the advent of civilization was a great disaster and that the Industrial Revolution was an even greater one. I further agree that a revolution against modernity, and against civilization in general, is necessary. But you can't build an effective revolutionary movement out of soft-headed dreamers, lazies, and charlatans. You have to have tough-minded, realistic, practical people, and people of that kind don't need the anarcho-primitivists' mushy utopian myth." —T. We talk about taking on a part time job if wedding work gets shifted again, whether we could return to a time which necessitates shooting with film cameras only, Clubhouse, the banning of street shooting and we debate fine art photography; what is it? The boys tempt a lifelong Nikon shooter with a shopping list, we sort out the black and white simulation options in camera, and discuss perfect pancakes of the lens variety. "In classes it was always, oh the road represents ultimate freedom, exuberance, the American dream…I just kept thinking, wait a minute, this doesn't line up for me." For nearly a century, the American road trip has been closely associated with the American dream. The open road is where millions of Americans freely set out to explore the country's beauty, epic landscapes, and diversity of cultures. For a country that claims to be a free and democratic land without roadblocks, the road trip has been and continues to be a fraught endeavor for Black people. With this project, Willett exposes the cracks of this ideal version of American society, pointing out that historically the road represents a collective site of trauma for the Black community. Amani Willett is a Brooklyn and Boston-based photographer whose practice is driven by conceptual ideas surrounding family, history, memory, and the social environment. Working primarily with the book form, his two monographs have been published to widespread critical acclaim. Both books, Disquiet (Damiani, 2013) and The Disappearance of Joseph Plummer (Overlapse, 2017), were selected by Photo-Eye as “best books” of the year and have been highlighted in over 50 publications including Photograph Magazine, PDN, Hyperallergic, Lensculture, New York Magazine and 1000 Words and recommended by Todd Hido, Elisabeth Biondi (former Visuals Editor of The New Yorker), Vince Aletti and Joerg Colberg (Conscientious), among others. Amani's photographs are also featured in the books Bystander: A History of Street Photography (2017 edition, Laurence King Publishing), Street Photography Now (Thames and Hudson), New York: In Color (Abrams), and have been published widely in places including American Photography, Newsweek, Harper's, The Huffington Post, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine and The New York Review of Books. His work resides in the collections of the Tate Modern, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Sir Elton John Photography Collection, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Oxford University, and Harvard University, among others. “It may be objected that primitive man is physically less secure than modern man, as is shown by his shorter life expectancy; hence modern man suffers from less, not more than the amount of insecurity that is normal for human beings. But psychological security does not closely correspond with physical security. It is true that primitive man is powerless against some of the things that threaten him; disease for example. But he can accept the risk of disease stoically. It is part of the nature of things, it is no one's fault, unless it is the fault of some imaginary, impersonal demon. But threats to the modern individual tend to be MAN-MADE.” —T. Kaczynski, Industrial Society and Its Future (1995). Cabin is the new season from The Relentless Picnic. “The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. There is no way of reforming or modifying the system so as to prevent it from depriving people of dignity and autonomy. If the system breaks down the consequences will still be very painful. But the bigger the system grows the more disastrous the results of its breakdown will be, so if it is to break down it had best break down sooner rather than later. We therefore advocate a revolution against the industrial system. This revolution may or may not make use of violence; it may be sudden or it may be a relatively gradual process spanning a few decades. This is not to be a POLITICAL revolution. Its object will be to overthrow not governments but the economic and technological basis of the present society.” —T. Kaczynski, Industrial Society and Its Future, 1995. I don't remember how it came up but I was talking to Sean Tucker a while back and we ended up talking about different photographers that we had found recently and he asked me whether I'd seen the work of Maria Lax. Maria is a Finnish photographer based in London who had published a book called Some Kind of Heavenly Fire. Honestly the title alone was enough to pique my interest but what I found beyond it was a fantastic set of images that were inspired by a book her grandfather wrote documenting a series of encounters with UFOs by the locals of the small Finnish town where she grew up. I've always had a fascination with UFOs so I was interested straight away and the work beautifully straddles the line between reality and possibility. Maria takes a little X-Files, a bit of Twin Peaks, and maybe even a dash of Todd Hido and turns it into something uniquely her own —and that combination of style and vision is there in both her personal and her commercial work, which is no easy feat.I'd like to thank Tom Booth Woodger at Setanta Books for not only arranging an introduction to Maria but also for providing me a copy of her wonderful book Some Kind of Heavenly Fire. LINKSSome Kind of Heavenly FireSetanta Books CONNECT WITH MARIAWebsite: https://www.maria-lax.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/maria_lax_/ MUSICPlease Listen Carefully (Jahzzar) / CC BY-SA 4.0

In this episode of PhotoWork with Sasha Wolf, Sasha and photographer, Todd Hido, have a wide-ranging conversation about Todd's roles as an artist and an educator. Todd Hido is a San Francisco Bay Area-based artist whose work has been featured in Artforum, The New York Times Magazine, Eyemazing, Wired, Elephant, FOAM, and Vanity Fair. Most notably, Pier 24 Photography holds the archive of all his published works. He has over a dozen published books; his most recent monograph titled Excerpts from Silver Meadows was released in 2013, along with an innovative B-Sides Box Set designed to function as a companion piece to his award-winning monograph. Aperture has published his mid-career survey entitled Intimate Distance: Twenty-Five Years of Photographs, a Chronological Album in October of 2016. His next book titled Bright Black World will be released by Nazraeli Press in the fall of 2018. In addition to Hido being an artist, he is also a collector and over the last 25 years has created one of the most notable photobook collections. His library will be featured in Bibliomania: The World’s Most Interesting Private Libraries forthcoming in 2018 by Random House.   http://www.toddhido.com

“One writer says that Brown's peculiar monomania made him to be ‘dreaded by the Missourians as a supernatural being.' Sure enough, a hero in the midst of us cowards is always so dreaded. He is just that thing. He shows himself superior to nature. He has a spark of divinity in him. They talk as if it were impossible that a man could be ‘divinely appointed' in these days to do any work whatever; as if vows and religion were out of date as connected with any man's daily work; as if the agent to abolish slavery could only be somebody appointed by the President, or by some political party. This week's podcast contains in-depth interviews with prolific and enigmatic fine art photographer Todd Hido discussing his early days, his remarkable ascent to the top of the game his influences and process; a valuable conversation with David Fahey, Director of the Los Angeles Mega-photography gallery Fahey Klein  and the National Executive Director of American Photographic Artists, Juliette Wolf Robin in which we discuss what the landscape of our profession will look like post Covid 19.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

American photographer Ed Panar has a BA from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. He has published several photobooks including: In the Vicinity (Deadbeat Club, 2018), Animals That Saw Me Volume One and Volume Two (2011 and 2016, The Ice Plant), Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes (Spaces Corners & The Ice Plant, 2013), Salad Days (2012 Gottlund), Same Difference (2010, Gottlund), and Golden Palms (2007, J&L Books). Ed “is a compiler of small moments, a celebrant of the everyday. Nothing dramatic happens in his photographs; nowhere exotic is shown. Rather, his prosaic images force us into a sustained encounter with the ordinariness of urban life, bringing together both meanings of the word pedestrian. In his ongoing body of work Out West, Panar reveals the fluidity of the interaction between the banal and the beautiful. (Panar also has a series, Back East, that produces a similar effect.) Some of the photos do indeed display the striking beauty of Western landscapes, but even this is contained within the bounds of ordinary life: Panar’s views are the kind you might have walking home from somewhere not far away, if you were to take that little detour that goes up the hill just a bit. We are a long way here from the majestic waterfalls and granite domes in Ansel Adams’s work. Panar’s photos seem to be saying that if we pay attention there is no need to venture far and wide, to scale the peaks or traverse the wilds — that something of value is just around the next corner.” (Aaron Rothman) Ed’s photographs have been widely exhibited at venues including The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, The New York Photography Festival, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Pier 24 Photography in San Francisco. Ed is co-founder - with his partner, photographer Melissa Catanese - of the project space and photography bookshop Spaces Corners, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he currently lives and works. On episode 109, Ed discusses, among other things: Learning from Todd Hido in San Francisco Figuring out how to keep going no matter what Walking Home - his first series, still not a book Golden Palms The importance of editing and how it starts while shooting Animals That Saw Me Volume One and Volume Two His interest in speculative realism The importance of walking… and humour In the Vicinity HIs project space in Pittsburgh, Spaces Corners Referenced: Todd Hido Chris McCall Wolfgang Tillmans (Burg) Nick Waplington William Eggleston Clint Woodside Website | Instagram | Spaces Corners “If I’ve figured anything out it’s how to kinda keep going no matter what. And I think maybe Todd [Hido] instilled that in me, that sort of work ethic. You have to get it done. You have to find a way. Make things now, ask questions later, kind of thing.”

This interview is with Claire Howard, the Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Blanton Museum of Art here in Austin. The museum is currently hosting a traveling photography exhibit called The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip. Claire speaks about the content and images that make up the exhibit and shares what goes on behind the scenes to plan for and integrate an exhibition into a new space. Don’t miss this great exhibition which will be on view from November 25th, 2017 until January 7th, 2018. Recorded May 31, 2015 at Stockholm Studios in Bushwick, Brooklyn I'd met Patrick Gookin in 2007/2008 while I was living in Los Angeles but only vaguely remembered the night when he reached out last year to share his work. It's a strange feeling when someone remembers a moment with you that you have trouble retrieving. One of the hazards of getting old I suppose. Patrick was in town for a workshop with Todd Hido, but found enough free time to join us to talk about his book Los Angeles By Car, living and photographing in Japan, taking pictures out his window in Silver Lake, and “men flashing plants.” He has been working on a new project about the California drought and each of the books he brought along were intriguing. As we like to say, we've set up a pretty good scam for checking out photobooks with this podcast. I can safely say that doing this show is how I prefer to experience new photobooks. Each week is a surprise and that makes it fun and interesting for us, and hopefully for you as well. Photobooks/Photography Discussed

This week, we begin with a follow up to last week's discussion about direction and confidence (or lack thereof, as the case may be). All you really control is when you begin and when you ship. Recognizing those things that truly are beyond your control (and letting go of them) can be liberating and just the fuel you need to move forward. Todd Hido is our Photographer of the Week.
