James Tillman remembers the smell of steak and onions cooking at his mother’s house on the day police came for him. He thought he’d be back soon. Instead, he spent a total of 18½ years incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. In 2006, with the help of the Connecticut Innocence Project, DNA evidence proved his innocence, making him the first person in Connecticut exonerated through post-conviction DNA testing. Later, DNA pointed to another man, who eventually confessed in court. James talks about refusing to plead guilty, surviving prison, holding onto faith, and learning how to live freely again. And we meet Katie Farrell, the social worker who helped him prepare for freedom before freedom was guaranteed. Newt talks with John Tillman, CEO of the American Culture Project, about his new book, “The Political Vise: How the Radical Left Controls America and the Path to Regaining Our Liberty.” They discuss how the “radical left” wields power in America and how conservatives should respond. Tillman argues that the left outperforms the right in emotional storytelling, especially on economic issues like gas prices, and contend that conservatives must connect policy to everyday experiences to win public sentiment. Tillman introduces his “political vise” framework, describing politics as a pressurized system in which media pressure from the left, people pressure from the right, and elite influencers, especially government unions, trial lawyers, and nonprofits dependent on government funding, squeeze political decision-makers. Their conversation also examines why Republicans struggle to recruit and retain strong candidates. Tillman argues that people on the right are more drawn to business than politics, that some politicians adopt policy agendas mainly to advance their careers, and that the culture of Washington often pulls conservatives leftward through constituent and donor pressures.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Wednesday Apr 22 we remember the ultimate sacrifice of Army Ranger Pat Tillman who was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan. A unique Ranger in that he left a pro football career with The NFL's Arizona Cardinals to join the Army shortly after 9/11, along with his brother. On the evening of April 22, 2004, Pat's unit was ambushed as it traveled through the rugged, canyon terrain of eastern Afghanistan. His heroic efforts to provide cover for fellow soldiers led to his tragic death. Today we're not only honoring his memory but also hearing how his incredible legacy lives on through the Pat Tillman Foundation. We're joined by Tillman Foundation CEO Dr. Katherine Steele, and scholar recipient, Army veteran Maj. Bernard Toney Jr. Steele shares unique memories of Pat and how the Tillman Foundation grew from donations to his alma mater Arizona State University, to helping high caliber veteran students complete college and become the leaders of tomorrow. Army veteran Bernard Toney Jr. shares how he went from the Special Forces community (serving in the same area as Tillman, just 4 months after his death) to serving in The White House. And, how he hopes to make an impact in Public Health and improve the lives of Americans from all socio-economic backgrounds. Bob Tillman is a former electronics professional who launched Alta Colina Vineyard & Winery in 2003 on the steep, mountainous terrain of Paso Robles, California . Managing thirty-two acres of grapes, he has spent two decades transitioning from conventional methods to a biological approach centered on the natural resilience of his native ecosystem. He eliminated tillage in 2006 and moved away from synthetic inputs to rely on native ground cover and biological cycling . By utilizing total nutrition testing, he identifies vast mineral reserves already present in his soil and focuses on microbial health to make those nutrients available to the vines In this episode, John and Bob discuss: Tranisitiong to a completely no-till system after observing that native grasses were more effective and resilient than planted cover crops . How nutrition testing revealed that the soil contains enough potassium for over six hundred years and enough iron for millions of years of production . Utilizing AEA and sap analysis to identify specific micronutrient deficiencies and adjust nutrition throughout the growing season through foliar applications. Applying AEA products like CalGuard and Rebound Boron helps address seasonal trending deficiencies in calcium and boron levels . How the vineyard uses compost extracts and teas to inject biological activity directly into the soil through the irrigation system . High-density native plant populations providing ground cover that supports deep-rooted vines while maintaining high soil organic matter . As a child, Garcia picked fruits and vegetables on the migrant route from Florida to Michigan. It gave him firsthand experience of the work that it takes to harvest the produce that ends up on our plate. Today, Lalo Garcia is one of the most celebrated chefs in Latin America. In 1903, South Carolina's most powerful journalist is gunned down in broad daylight, and the shooter is the lieutenant governor. Narciso Gonzalez, editor of The State newspaper in Columbia, spent years attacking the Tillman machine: “Pitchfork Ben” Tillman, the architect of South Carolina's post-Reconstruction political order, and Ben's volatile nephew James Tillman, a rising politician with a reputation for drinking, gambling, and vendettas. On January 19, 1903, that feud turns into a street-corner assassination outside the State House. From Red Shirts intimidation and the Hamburg massacre, to Ben Tillman's state-run liquor “dispensary” system and the riots it sparked, to a murder trial engineered to let the shooter walk, we trace the bloodline politics and raw violence behind the killing with writer Jack Hitt (This American Life, Uncivil). It's a story about press power, political revenge, and how a state's myths, and its laws, get written when the loudest voice in the room can be silenced with a gun.
