Quando frequentava il liceo scientifico a Roma, le ragazze in classe erano poche, ma il suo talento per la matematica appariva subito evidente. Un professore di disegno le suggeriva allora di intraprendere la carriera di ingegnera. La ricercatrice seguiva quel consiglio e iniziava un percorso che la portava a diventare la prima preside donna della facoltà di ingegneria e architettura presso l'Università di Cagliari. Durante la sua carriera non incontrava ostacoli o pregiudizi significativi, pur lavorando in un ambiente in cui la presenza maschile prevaleva. La depurazione biologica delle acque Il nucleo della sua attività riguardava il trattamento delle acque reflue che provenivano dalle abitazioni e dalle industrie. Alessandra Carucci spiegava che depurare l'acqua era fondamentale per evitare l'inquinamento di mari, fiumi e laghi. Negli studi che conduceva, prediligeva i processi biologici perché sfruttavano i batteri e i microrganismi invece delle sostanze chimiche. Questi piccoli organismi utilizzavano lo sporco come fonte di nutrimento e pulivano la risorsa idrica in modo economico e naturale. L'innovazione tecnologica permetteva di selezionare batteri capaci di rimuovere l'azoto e il fosforo anche in assenza di ossigeno. Tale metodo riduceva drasticamente il consumo di energia, poiché non servivano più i compressori per soffiare aria nelle vasche di trattamento. Si trattava di una soluzione promettente per rendere i depuratori più sostenibili dal punto di vista economico. Il progetto PNRR e l'economia circolare La crisi climatica imponeva una gestione oculata delle risorse, specialmente in una regione come la Sardegna che soffriva per lunghi periodi di siccità. Per questo motivo, la docente coordinava un vasto progetto legato al PNRR che puntava sull'innovazione regionale. Il piano si divideva in vari rami che includevano la protezione delle coste, la tutela delle lagune e il monitoraggio dei siti minerari. Un aspetto centrale riguardava l'economia circolare, dove gli scarti dell'industria casearia e agricola diventavano nuove materie prime. I batteri trasformavano il siero di latte in bioplastiche biodegradabili o producevano biometano per generare energia pulita. Questo approccio eliminava i rifiuti e chiudeva il ciclo produttivo, riducendo l'impatto ambientale complessivo. Un consiglio per le nuove generazioni In conclusione, Alessandra Carucci rivolgeva un messaggio incoraggiante ai giovani studenti che dovevano scegliere il proprio futuro. Suggeriva di seguire sempre le passioni e di osservare con curiosità le molteplici possibilità che l'Università di Cagliari offriva. Sottolineava inoltre quanto l'interdisciplinarità fosse vitale: per salvare l'ambiente serviva la collaborazione tra ingegneri, biologi, geologi e botanici. Solo unendo le conoscenze si potevano affrontare con successo le sfide ecologiche del domani.

Karin emphasizes how these methodologies contribute to a comprehensive understanding of gene regulation beyond mere transcription initiation, emphasizing the significance of mRNA binding proteins and their role in stabilizing gene transcripts for translation. This exploration of the interaction between chromatin structure, transcriptional dynamics, and post-transcriptional regulation reveals a multidimensional perspective of gene expression. Transitioning to her lab's focus on high-throughput genomic technologies, we discuss how Karin and her team are uncovering conserved and species-specific genomic organization principles within various Plasmodium species. By generating 3D genomic models through Hi-C experiments, she describes how they have identified patterns that underline the parasite's immune evasion strategies.
