Episode 16 - Dr. Lisa Nijm

Man oh man, what a way to start off 2021. This episode was probably the most fun I've had actually doing the recording bit, and Dr. Nijm pretty much carried me on this one. She is amazing and very very busy as you will discover. A lawyer, a doctor, current CEO of Women in Ophthalmology, has her own successful practice...and that's just a few of the things she's currently doing, you'll have to listen to find out more (like her very cool organization MDNegotiation.com...sorry couldn't help myself I had to throw that one in as well). Listen in as Darryl and Dr. Nijm talk about everything from her work and career, their mutual fandom of Orbis, what it takes to acquire the skills to successfully negotiate life, women and diversity in Ophthalmology, mentoring and it's necessity....the list goes on. Oh, and there is quite a bit of laughter as well. Like I said, the most fun podcast yet. Find out more about Dr. Nijm and her various work, or contact her directly if you have a question. It's another first on the podcast! This time it's our first follow up chat. In late 2019 Dr. Singh won a grant to expand his research on possible disparities in treatment. He was looking at socio-economic issues, race, gender and insurance primarily. Now after having analyzed over 200,000 cases, he is back to talk about what he found. While you might not initially be surprised by the general findings, you will be by the specifics. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/eyetalkaudio/message

In this episode, I kinda fanboy out a bit, which you'll just have to forgive because I'm talking with Dr. Hunter Cherwek of Orbis International. Orbis, people, Orbis. You've most likely heard of Orbis and their flying hospital, but they do so much more. As we dive into the intricacies of this brilliant organization you'll come to see that Orbis really knows what they are doing, and they do it exactly the way you would hope they do. Dr. Cherwek eloquently explains their mission and how they successfully work with countries all around the world to not only perform life-changing surgeries but more importantly, how they help teach and build programs that are long-lasting and self-sustaining. Additionally, we do a deep dive into their technology; discussing their mentoring A.I., their system of global sharing (learning, assisting, and collaborating virtually in real-time), and how they maintain a state of the art learning library that anyone can access. You know those people you occasionally meet in life that you instinctually know are in the right profession? That’s exactly the feeling I got when I chatted with Dr. Sarwat Salim. She is impressive in her own right, but the way she has dedicated herself to her profession, in all aspects, is quite remarkable. From work around the world to her mentoring and teaching here in the states, she is not shy about stepping in helping move things forward. In this episode we chat about many many things including the recent recognition of her work during the early days of COVID-19, the need for education and training around the world, mentoring (she proposes a fascinating new model of mentoring that is definitely worth listening to), diversity in ophthalmology and the need for more women to step into leadership roles. We also chat about her current passion – myopia, the rising epidemic it presents, and the work that she and the AAO task force are currently doing to help spread awareness as well as the research being done. Dr. Sarwat Salim is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts University and the Vice-Chair of Clinical and Academic Affairs and Director of the Glaucoma Service at Tufts Medical Center. Dr. Salim has held numerous leadership positions at both state and national levels. She is currently the Chair of the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the Academy’s Board of Trustees. Darryl chats with Chief Strategy Officer Michel Holmes and CEO Bobby Mehan of Shareable Forms to talk about all things forms (but really soooo much more). Practices face the dreaded paper forms every day, from patient intake to clinical notes and it tends to be a problem with record keeping. Where do you keep them, do you currently have to scan them in, the paper piles up and up and up. Well, Shareable Forms has digitized this process in a rather brilliant way. They might not be the first but they have definitely perfected it. Plus you can tell these guys love talking about what they do, it's kinda infectious. They also ask the question - is it an EHR or not? Well, yes, but also much more. Listen in and they chat about, forms, their philosophy on helping practices and surgery centers large and small and they even drop a groundbreaking bombshell towards the end of the episode (honestly what they disclose is quite amazing and deserves its own podcast). Man, we love doing this. In this episode, we talk with Dr. Rishi Singh, one of the winners of the 2019 ASCRS Winning Pitch award. A few years back Dr. Singh began to notice possible disparages in his patients who required some complex treatments and wondered why that was, so he started his own studies based on his patient base and noticed there we socio-economic issues that affected care and dived a bit deeper and what he found was startling. In this episode (recorded back in November) he dives deep into his initial findings and what he hopes to get out of his ongoing study looking at the IRIs registry database. This is some truly remarkable stuff. Also, apologies for the audio on my end, it was a wonky signal but Dr. Singh is clear as glass. Enjoy.
