What happens when we reach the top? There's only one place to go.Cory Richards has scaled the world's highest peaks and fallen to life's lowest lows. An acclaimed mountain climber, photographer, and filmmaker, Cory has literally reached the top of the world. He climbed Mount Everest with no supplemental oxygen, became the first American to summit an 8,000-meter mountain, and narrowly survived an avalanche, after which he skyrocketed to fame when his photos graced the cover of National Geographic. And yet, after all that success, Cory felt like an emotional wreck. As his mental health deteriorated, his volatile behavior damaged his career and his relationships. Without the identity of “climber” to give him validation, Cory was forced to confront who he really is.In Part 1 of this conversation, Cory shares with me head-spinning stories from climbing the Himalayas, his struggles with mental health as a teen, and the difference between survival and resilience. This…is A Bit of Optimism. For more on Cory Richards and his work, check out:coryrichards.com

Xavier Abdullahi is a rock climbing influencer and coach based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Xavier discovered his love for climbing in college and never looked back. In fact he dropped out of college so that he could spend all his time climbing. He never planned to be an influencer either, but when he saw a small brand offering chalk bags in exchange for posting content he made his @daddyxclimbs account on Instagram and within a few months was 15,000+ followers. He never pretended to be an elite climber, instead he made uplifting and relatable content to bring smiles to the faces of whoever was watching. It wasn't long before other brands started taking notice. With the help of a couple of sponsors, and his local climbing gym offering him a part time job, he was able to start climbing nearly every day. In the episode we discuss his rough childhood in Minneapolis, his mom marrying someone she met on Yahoo chat, moving out of the city, discovering his love for the outdoors, experiencing racism, being awarded scholarships, getting hired by The North Face to create content, being awarded over $5,000 worth of ice climbing gear, becoming friends with the legendary Mt. Everest climber Dom Mullins, flying to Washington to create content for Zig Zag Climbing, building real relationships online, dealing with burnout, best climbing movies, dream places to go climbing, and so much more.

Despite Bear Grylls' reputation as an outdoor expert—having survived a major fall during his time in the British Special Forces, climbed Mt. Everest before turning 25, and navigated the North Atlantic in an inflatable raft—there's skepticism about his true survival prowess. Evidence suggests that Grylls may not be as formidable a survivalist as portrayed. Some of his wilderness advice has even been questioned by other experts. So, what's the reality? The pictures made it look like a parody. Eleven minutes after taking off from a West Texas launch site, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin space capsule touched down with its all-female celebrity crew. Bezos opened the capsule door and greeted his fiancé. One by one the women filed out, each in their snazzy blue, flared space outfits. Having technically been in space for just four minutes, the popstar Katy Perry knelt down and kissed the ground. I feel the same about space tourism as I do about climbing Mt Everest. In the broadest possible terms, the idea is really appealing. I'd love to go to space! But as it stands today, actually appreciating how much resource is involved, and the extent to which money rather than talent is the only thing separating anyone from the loftiest heights... I can't bear the thought. We all know Jeff Bezos isn't spending billions upon billions to push the boundaries of scientific understanding. He's going as a vanity project. It all feels a bit gross. Perhaps when space tourism is a little more normalised and they can achieve economies of scale, I'll quietly eat my words and find the whole thing a little more palatable. But for what it's worth, I'd hand my explorer-of-the-week award not to Katy Perry and Jeff Bezos' other half, but to the crew of the Schmidt Ocean Institute's Falkor vessel, who just captured the first ever footage of a colossal squid in its natural environment. Colossal squid are the largest invertebrates on the planet – 500kgs without a spine! And yet for all that science has achieved, we know remarkably little about them. It's only a century since the species was first discovered, and we know most of what we know about them today because of their predators. Sperm whales, in turns out, are much better at tracking down colossal squid than we are. 600m below the surface of the South Atlantic, somewhere off the coast of the Antarctic South Sandwich Islands, in an area so remote that the next closest humans were on the International Space Station, the group of scientists used an unmanned submersible to film the most extraordinary footage of a juvenile colossal squid. Forget anything that Katy Perry or Jeff Bezos' wife-to-be might be seeing out the window of their shuttle; set against the absolute black of the deep deep, the squid was purpleish and orange, elegant, brilliantly, beautifully alien. Isn't it amazing that our species can send a rocket with a popstar to space, and yet it's taken us until 2025 to actually record an Earth-based tentacled beast that can grow as long as a bus and weigh as much as a cow? I just think it's such a timely reminder. For whatever fascinations and discoveries await us in the infinite depths of the cosmos, there are still so many miracles and mysteries much closer to home, in the infinite depths of the real blue origin. In this episode of The extra-Ordinary Leader, I'm joined by the incredible Cathy O'Dowd – the first woman to climb Mount Everest from both the north and south sides. But this conversation isn't just about physical mountains; it's about the emotional and professional peaks we all face.Cathy's story is one of grit, humility and mindset, and I couldn't have been more inspired by the way she talks about doing extra-Ordinary things by simply taking the next right step. Whether it's writing a book, leading a business, or learning to kitesurf at 42 (yes, I really did that), this conversation is a reminder that success is not about fairy dust – it's about steady, consistent, powerful choices. We spoke about what happens when life feels like a cul-de-sac, when perfectionism gets in the way of progress, and how sometimes saying yes to uncomfortable opportunities is the very thing that takes you to the next level. Cathy shares how she navigated being parachuted onto the first South African Everest team – as the only woman – and how she's learned to let go of the “token” label and find confidence through action. We also dove into the power of physical challenge – why sports like climbing or kitesurfing can be an antidote to rumination, stress, and even imposter syndrome. Cathy had so much wisdom to share about how we lead ourselves and others, how we perform under pressure, and why empathy isn't a gift – it's a tool. This one will stick with me for a long time, and I hope it stays with you too.Inside this episode:What extra-Ordinary leadership really meansWhy we need to let go of perfectionismHow to reframe tokenism and self-doubtThe difference between stress responses – and how to manage themWhy physical adventure can transform your mindsetHow to use empathy as a tool – especially in high-stakes leadershipThe 'STOP' technique Cathy uses in moments of pressureThe surprising link between coffee, presence, and performanceMentions & Links:Learn more about Cathy: https://www.cathyodowd.comBook Cathy to speak: https://www.cathyodowd.com/keynote-speaking/My book The extra-Ordinary Leader: https://www.dollywaddell.com/store/p/the-extra-ordinary-leader

Please enjoy my B.rad podcast conversation with Alex Hutchinson, the world’s leading science-sport journalist and NYT best-selling author of Endure. The occasion is the release of his long-awaited next book, titled The Explorer’s Gene, and in this much-anticipated follow-up to Endure, he refutes the myth that, in our fully mapped digital world, the age of exploration is dead. Instead, the itch to discover new things persists in all of us, expressed not just on the slopes of Everest but in the ways we work, play, and live. The Explorer’s Gene combines riveting stories of exploration with cutting-edge insights from behavioral psychology and neuroscience, making a powerful case that our lives are better—more productive, more meaningful, and more fun—when we break our habits and chart a new path. Alongside our deep dive into The Explorer’s Gene, we also enjoyed a lively and friendly debate about my latest book, Born to Walk, sparked by Alex’s unique perspective as a long-time runner and promoter of endurance. Spoiler alert: we have lots of common ground, so it’s a peaceful, enlightening discussion; my favorite take away from Alex is: “Running is fine, as long as you recover from workouts.” You will hear his thoughtful critiques and insights, helping to clarify the message of the book while reflecting on the value of endurance pursuits—like why training for the mile might be more beneficial than pushing for a marathon. Alex Hutchinson is a National Magazine Award-winning science journalist and Outside magazine’s longtime Sweat Science columnist. Before journalism, he was a postdoctoral physicist and a long-distance runner for the Canadian national team. Check out his website here. TIMESTAMPS: Modern technology has an impact on our hardwired drive to explore and be creative. Intelligence is going up and creativity is going down. Chris Fisher and Erin Ton are very down-to-Earth people, but they are also way-up-in-the-air. As in, they are almost constantly on a mountain, very high mountains.  And when I say constantly, I mean they are pretty much always climbing, running on, and exploring mountains, as well as challenging themselves in the wildest wildernesses. Erin is known for setting hordes of FKTs, speeding through the gauntlet of Colorado 14ers in record time, as well as climbing 14ers in high heels. Yep, you heard that right. She and Chris, who owns the current record for the least time to climb all of the 14ers in winter, spent all of last summer bagging Colorado 13ers – of which there are 100s – several of them each day. They explored Patagonia for several weeks earlier this year, taking like they always do, heaps of absolutely jaw-dropping photos of their climbs and the scenery. Chris then took on the now-infamous Barkley Marathons, so definitely listen closely to learn more about this insane, unique race. Erin and Chris describe his battle against the course, that was made even tougher this year because of the unprecedented number of finishers last year – five – the heat the runners faced, the camaraderie with some legendary Barkley participants, and of course, enigmatic race director Laz. Later on, Erin also nailed a couple of FKTs on the gnarly course herself. They are now headed to the Himalayas, where in addition to their own projects and FKT attempts that you'll hear about here, they will be supporting our mutual friend Tyler Andrews in his unfathomable attempt to set the record for running up and down Mt. Everest without supplemental oxygen. There really isn't a dull moment in this very fun chat with this power duo of the mountains, who will absolutely inspire you to find adventure in the outdoors yourself, so I'm sure you'll enjoy this chat.Chris FisherInstagram @chrisjfishStrava Christopher FisherCheck out Chris' film Nine Hours on Manaslu on LaSportiva's YouTube channelErin TonInstagram @erin_ton7Strava Erin TonTyler Andrews' podcast: Ty's Training: Talking with my DadBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman Newsletter!https://mailchi.mp/dab62cfc01f8/newsletter-signup

Meghan Buchanan - mountaineer, adventure athlete, and advocate for neurodivergence, & aerospace engineer. Meghan has successfully summited the Seven Summits—the highest peaks on each continent—including Mount Everest and Antarctica's Mount Vinson. She is also close to completing the Explorers Grand Slam, which entails reaching both the North and South Poles in addition to the Seven Summits. As an advocate for neurodivergence, Meghan openly shares her experiences with dyslexia, inspiring others to embrace their unique challenges. She developed the GGRIT philosophy—Gratitude, Growth, Resilience, Integrity, and Tenacity—which she embodies in her pursuits and promotes through motivational speaking engagements. In 2024, Meghan expanded her reach by joining the cast of Netflix's “Outlast” Season 2, a survival competition set in the Alaskan Arctic that tests contestants' physical endurance, mental fortitude, and teamwork skills. Her participation showcased her resilience and adventurous spirit to a broader audience. Meghan at a young age was diagnosed with dyslexia, and faced significant academic challenges. Her mother instilled in her a philosophy of perseverance, emphasizing that with hard work, she could achieve anything. This mindset propelled Meghan to earn an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder and a master's degree in engineering management, leading to a successful career with prominent companies such as Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. Beyond her engineering achievements, Meghan is a dedicated adventure athlete. Her passion for the outdoors began in childhood, hiking with her father. In 2011, she suffered a severe snowboarding accident in Vail's Sunup Bowl, breaking her left femur and enduring a challenging 19-month recovery. Defying medical expectations, she not only regained her mobility but also pursued mountaineering with renewed determination. Through her multifaceted career and personal endeavors, Meghan Buchanan continues to inspire and empower individuals worldwide, demonstrating that with determination and GGRIT, any obstacle can be overcome. Tune in as Meghan Buchanan joins Bobby Marshall in studio to discuss mountaineering, impacts to the environment, public lands, Mt. Everest, neurodivergence, would travels, culture, mountain life, and so much more. How do you measure a mountain?

On the banks of the St Lawrence River in Quebec stands a 100-year-old lighthouse. While initially built to help boats navigate one of Canada's most difficult waterways, the Point-de-Père site now also holds a different responsibility: it is a key reference for measuring sea levels around the entire North America continent. But this is all set to change. With the development of new satellite technology, the tricky task of measuring sea levels is being updated - which could mean mountains around North America get brand new official heights. In this episode we revisit a question from CrowdScience listener Beth, who wondered about the elevation signs she saw scattered along a mountainous road, indicating how high above sea level she was. As sea levels rise, will all the elevation signs need repainting? And how do you measure sea level, anyway? The height of an enormous pile of rock like Ben Nevis, or Mount Everest feels unchangeable. But we measure them relative to the nearest patch of sea, which is where our story becomes complicated. Unlike water in a bath, sea level is not equal around the world. In fact, nothing on earth - not the sea, the shore or the mountains - is stable or constant, so the question of what you measure from and to becomes incredibly tricky. But that hasn't stopped scientists risking life and fingers to use an ever-evolving array of technologies to find answers. Join host Marnie Chesterton as she dives into the mechanics of the latest sea level technology, and how it could make a big difference to understanding our unpredictable world. Earlier this year, the Bears Ears Resource Management Plan dropped, outlining rules regarding camping, waste management, dogs, and, perhaps most controversially, fixed anchors for new routes across the monument, which includes, of course, Indian Creek. Jason Keith is a senior policy advisor at the Access Fund who has spent his career navigating the legal and relational fog of securing access for climbers across the country. He was deeply involved in the development of this plan and talks to us today about what it means for climbers today—and everyone going forward amid the uncertainty and chaos of the current administration.  But first, we talk about favorite mountain on earth, Everest, and why it's a such a slippery slope. Drones are coming for Sherpa jobs, but our hot take on this development might surprise you.  Our Final Bit is the Golden Shoals, a fiddle and guitar duo featuring Mark Kilianski and rock climber Amy Alvey. In this episode, Melissa Arnot Reid shares what it really takes to climb—not just the highest peaks on Earth, but the deepest valleys within ourselves. Melissa is a world-renowned mountaineer, professional mountain guide, and the first American woman to summit Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. She has spent years guiding others to the top of the world's tallest mountains, but in this conversation, she opens up about an even greater challenge: facing the internal struggles that no summit can fix. We dive deep into the difference between achievement and self-worth, the pressure of proving yourself, and what happens when success doesn't bring the validation you expect. Melissa shares the raw, untold side of her journey—the failures, the doubts, the painful past she had to confront, and the losses that forced her to reevaluate everything. She also discusses her new book, Enough, a raw and powerful memoir about what it really means to be enough, when success isn't and the truth is harder than the summit. . Some highlights we explore: The fallacy of achievement – Why success doesn't automatically bring happiness or contentment. "Am I good enough?" – The two questions that drove Melissa's biggest climbs—and biggest struggles. Lessons from the mountains – How extreme environments strip away who we pretend to be and reveal our true selves. The real hardest climb – The internal work of self-forgiveness, facing fear, and learning to let go of external validation. Enjoy!
