This episode is a continuation of last week's conversation, so if you missed it we highly encourage you to go back and start there. We have NASA's Astronaut Strength Conditioning and Rehabilitation (ASCR) team joining us, including Corey Twine (Strength and Conditioning Coach), Danielle Anderson (Physical Therapist), Bruce Nieschwitz (Athletic Trainer), and Christ Keeler (Athletic Trainer). In the previous conversation we focused on pre-flight preparation for astronauts and we transitioned into the in-flight training they do to mitigate the effects of microgravity. This time we wrap up the in-flight conversation and transition into post-flight rehabilitation. We discuss everything from how to do a dynamic warm up in space to the potential for things like wearables and blood flow restriction training in space. Like lasting time, we learn a lot about the fascinating challenges involved in keeping humans healthy and fit in space. NASA makes a huge amount of their information publicly available, here are a few for those of you that want to dive deeper into some of the topics we discussed: NASA has a dedicated page to highlight technology spinoffs that were developed for spaceflight but now benefit those of us here on earth. You can even find Bowflex on there! The Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development Program (CLDP) is NASA's program to assist companies with developing commercial access to low earth orbit. Astronaut flight assignment process EVA (extravehicular activity/spacewalk) spacesuit Human adaptation to spaceflight (if you search “exercise,” you'll find quite a few references to how exercise is used as a countermeasure in spaceflight)

She is a high volume cataract and refractive surgeon and she will hit the 100,000 surgery mark later in her career. She is also scheduled to be ASCRS president in a few years and she was just given the nod to be secretary for that organization. ASCRS apparently no longer does elections and decides on leadership positions via insiders. I look forward to her leadership. This was a very interesting discussion with so many important learning points for ophthalmologists.

That they could illustrates the potential to democratize advanced technology.Later, the conversation flowed to workflows. For ophthalmologists to use these tools consistently, they must be workflow compatible, Rhew said. They must save time, not add time. One use case: imagine if an AI-based tool could analyze images and automatically move abnormal screenings to the top of the inbox. How much time would that save?New technology can also save patients time, while allowing more of them to get access to necessary screenings. Healthcare practices saw this with telehealth during the pandemic. How else can we leverage technology to bring quality care to more people?Listen to the podcast today to hear our experts address the following:What innovations are the ophthalmology community most excited about? What were some of the top concerns raised about ophthalmic technology? What was it like to experience the first live-streamed surgery in the metaverse? How can surgeons leverage this type of technology? What are the barriers holding back many ophthalmologists from benefitting from new technology? How do physicians get started using generative AI and other new technologies? What makes ophthalmology an idea therapeutic area for exploring new technology? How can digital technology help improve health equity? How can digital technology help improve clinical trial recruitment and enrollment?[Press Play]ResourcesRanya Habash, MD https://med.stanford.edu/ophthalmology/education/ophthalmic_innovation_program/ranya-habash.htmlDavid Rhew     https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-rhew-m-d-1832764/Carey Powers  https://ois.net/carey-powers/The first live-streamed 3D surgery in the metaverse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ILJ7U8jbME

His lab is continuously NIH funded, with publications in Nature and many other high impact journals. More importantly, however, Dr. Alverdy is willing to challenge commonly accepted ideas, like the very basic tenet that we really know why anastomoses leak. Dr. Alverdy has also run a continuously funded NIH-funded laboratory that studies the molecular interactions of bacteria and the intestinal mucosa in order to understand how life-threatening infections arise after trauma and major surgery and during critical illness. He has developed several anti-infective polymer-based compounds that can attenuate the virulence of several multi-drug resistant pathogens that cause life threatening infections in surgical patients and works with the IME to synthesize, refine, and scale the compounds for pre-clinical testing.
