In this episode, I had the opportunity to speak with an old classmate, supervisee, and friend, Aja. I graduated in Spring 2018, Aja graduated in Spring 2020 (3 months post-lockdown). Together, we explored the trials and tribulations of being involved student leaders turned college grads with the unexpected experiences on the other side of graduation. Many people experience this transition and don't exactly know how to move through the process. The nuance of COVID made this conversation even more unique. Know that your experience is valid and everything is going to be okay! Follow Aja's work at @n.a.h.podcast on Instagram or directly on Spotify "N.A.H. Podcast" Timestamps: 1. So often, we can lose sight of our depth of importance here. The time it took to create our lives, bodies, and lineage all culminated to bring us forth today. Enjoy this meditation to expand further into our creation and take a deeper dive with journal prompts if that feels right. Take care. In our life, we have the power to inspire others as well as ourselves. I have the privilege to reflect on different habits and routines that challenged my mental health. Things are still not perfect, but I am working on becoming my best version often. In the process, we have made sense of nonsense... and that's okay. Once we are able to be aware of our inner magnificence is when we are able to reclaim our power. Through it all, we are able to connect with the sacred nature of our lives. The more we tap into our hearts, we become aligned with ourselves in a deeper way. _:__ Grounding Breath _:__ Battling Mental Health _:__ Reclaiming Our Inner Magnificence _:__ Life is Sacred --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/limbs/message

    E. 2 - Choosing Health with Emani from BlkAndVegan

Choosing Health with Emani from BlkAndVegan to chat about being a Black, vegan woman. Her website is live at blkandvegan.com, check her out on Instagram (@blkandvegan). Such great energy put into the making of her brand, we see you. Community breathwork (2:42) Introducing Emani! (3:47) — She wants everyone to know she's an Aquarius woman. I asked her opinion on how our friendship works as a Scorpio-Aquarius duo. Short answer, time, and growth. What was your journey into veggie life? (7:30)— Like most folks who may become vegetarian, CHEESE is what usually holds people back from making the transition to vegan, plant-based, or animal-product free diets. The hormone we spoke about was CASEIN. What sparks this lifestyle is different for everyone, but most have come across a documentary or resource exposing the wounds of the food industry that made us take an honest look at our consumption habits. For some, ignorance is bliss and that's okay too. We just want folks to question what comes at the cost of bliss. I briefly shared my superficial motivation to make the transition, aka Raven Tracy! Will this journey be lifelong? (14:05) — YES! Emani also thinks of future ambitions for a maternity shoot and wedding reception ideas. We briefly address the journey to self-sufficiency and gardening. As Black individuals, we have become so disconnected to the earth, so our interest in wanting to reclaim that part of our story is inherently powerful. For now, being plant moms to real or fake plants can be our drive to enhance our green thumbs. Overall, in the plant-based world, there is more innovation and creativity than ever before. With an open mind and imagination, there is no better time to consider a transition with all the resources, information, and recipes available at our fingertips. Are you “vegan”? (20:40) — Dr. Aris Latham (the mastermind behind Sunfire Foods, Ra (“raw”) Cuisine) speaks on "vegan" as a political term that differentiated the vegetarians that cared more about animal rights in the 1950s. We talked about how we came to realizations that being vegan was deeper than food after our transition. We developed more awareness of our thoughts and decisions. It can also become expensive when wanting to purchase from a quality, ethical, vegan brand and we recognize that everyone comes into these things at their own pace. There's so much room to question things as we accept this awakening. We also briefly touch on food desert and the challenges that come with wanting to make a shift with few quality resources as a foundation. Baby steps are key! Quotable: it's kinda poppin over here on the faux fur side! What other things have you noticed? (30:20) — Our foundations have been structured generationally and we are aware of how that played out in our daily lives based on what we ate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. At the end of the day, it's all about flavor! Not many of us would want naked, unseasoned anything - meat or tofu! Through it all, we give ourselves and others grace. We see who's really open to join the vegan party, but also don't strictly hold people to their present choices. We've also noticed our energy is definitely more sustainable throughout the day and we see the world with more clarity. What's been your experience with family and friends? (40:45) — We both had atrocious cookie experiences as new vegans. We now know that we have to come with our A-game when bringing vegan foods to the table. Getting in the lab is key to creating dishes we are proud of and desire to share with others. More thoughts on inequity in food. And lastly: peace, love, and avocados! Closing: What is joy? and reciprocal, sisterly, gas (52:00) — Emani: joy is doing what I want, creativity, and reaching potential. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/limbs/message

    E. 1 - Tips While Advocating for Black Lives

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 27, 2020 20:49

This podcast is in response to friends wanting to reach out as a resource for my mental health. Thank you, but please take these thought into consideration as a person within and for the movement or Black liberation. 4:20 - 1. Please make sure Black lives matter outside of the unjustified deaths within these systems of power. This included the workplace and beyond. Using your talents, resources, privileges, access, tools, time, knowledge and everything between to advocate for Black representation and equity everywhere. 5:20 - 2. If you don't know what to do, recognize that we all have the power to shift paradigms. If you're on hiring committees, executive board, and/or make executive decisions is the Black perspective being considered or assisting in the decision making? At the end of the day, you have to commit to making a change. 6:15 - 3. We continue to struggle for justice and our health is being effected. Many laws, decisions, and actions made place Black bodies at a higher disadvantage to create wealth, experience higher levels of stress, and just live! Understand how you contribute to anti-Blackness and your self-care. 8:20 - 4. If you don't understand things that contribute to the Black experience, research. We also had to research information on our own considering we learned the same Eurocentric history as other Americans. It's okay to explore a history that is not of your own ethnicity, nationality, race, etc. If your are Black and do know how much about your history, look into it! It's so rich… 10:25 - 5. Be willing to find yourself in a vulnerable position to learn/understand. If you're coming from a pure intention, vocalize that and explore something together. I personally believe it's better to be in a vulnerable place and learn than shield yourself for your own comfort and safety of your ego being in pain. 11:15 - 6. Don't expect Black folks to be willing to teach and explain our experience to you. With that, please don't take it personal. It may not be the right time and may never be. Don't let that stop your curiosity of being a better ally or champion of support. Once again, we had to learn our own history too. 12:00 - 7. Reaching out can be useful, but speaking life into someone is a whole new level. These words from friends have continued to propel me forward in low times and I appreciate them. Building rapport and knowing someone's love language may be useful to know what's best, but the power of your actions is worth the chance. 16:05 - 8. Understand your motive: Awareness vs Action. Wherever you are, thanks. How can you propel your activism further. When you look back some years down the line, what impact do you say you wanted to have? 17:05 - TAKE AWAYS: 1. Do your part! Add to the movement where you are willing and strong. 2. Come together, organize, support, and please stick with it until things change. 3. Race never had to be so sticky, understand it is a tool. It can be used lease 2 ways. A) Understanding how different groups operate, live, what makes them different/special. B) For destruction as we've seen with stereotypes, discrimination and prejudice throughout history. 20:20 - Final affirmations and closing --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/limbs/message
