In this talk Chris Jarvis discusses the transition for language students from GCSE to A-Level. It is recommended that you download the accompanying PDFs (found separately in this collection) in order to reference whilst watching this video. Chris originally studied Spanish and French before completing an MA in Translation at the University of Sheffield. Following the completion of his Masters he studied a PGCE and then completed Doctorate in Education alongside teaching, where his thesis centred on pupil voice and cross-curricular language teaching. He is currently an A-Level Spanish teacher and the Head of Languages at King Edward VII School, a specialist language college with 1,800 students on-roll. Uptake of languages at 6th form is high with currently around one hundred students studying Spanish, French, German or Japanese to A2 level. His teaching philosophy focuses on teaching students about the cultural similarities and differences between Spain and England so that students not only leave the school with an A-Level in Spanish, but also a heightened sense of cultural competence.
