Despite repeated protestations by the Borg, Resistance is NOT futile, but it IS often female. Engage with us as we explore the women of Star Trek through the eyes of women. The good, the bad, and the ugly, we’ll tackle sexism, representation, hitting glass ceilings head on, and sometimes even breaking them, in a quest to dive deep into the less than perfect aspects of a world we love. We’ll be releasing episodes every Monday and each episode will fall into a thematic arc. Through these arcs we will cover topics such as machismo, parity, and even sartorial choices. Each episode, Paige and Amber will pull from the entire Star Trek canon for our discussions, sometimes focusing on an individual series or movie, sometimes flitting through the timeline. Join us on this voyage where few women’s voices have been heard before. Contact us @rif.pod on Twitter or Instagram or email us at resistance.is.female.podcast@gmail.com!

New week, new episode, NO SPOILERS! (For Discovery, that is...) We pulled an audible this week and are bringing you an episode you didn't expect but suspect you will love. Amber and Paige take some time to go a little deeper with some of our favorite female characters who just can't seem to wear uniform, or at least not one Starfleet would provide. Bonus content includes some of our favorite alien civilians who have made excellent sartorial choices, and some human kids who definitely did not dress themselves. SPOILER ALERT: We've finally made it to the end of the massive spoilers- the final episode of Discovery season 3! So, this will be the last time we recap things that aired within the last 6 months, and our episodes will probably get a whole lot shorter (you're welcome). For today's episode, we start with a little 'Amber and Paige think they're funny' banter, with a very clear warning of when we're going to start discussing the Discovery content, then you can skip ahead to 47:10 for the rest of the episode. This week we have a lot of fun talking through some of our favorite (to appreciate and mock) looks from aliens in uniform and humans in what we're calling their 'casual(ty) Friday' best. There are comparisons to furniture, allusions to high fashion, and some stunningly bad sweaters. All in all, it's a romp! Please like, subscribe, and join the conversation! SPOILER ALERT: You know the drill, we're spoiling a new episode of Discovery at the top of the show. To miss out on this part of the conversation skip ahead to 37:30 where the music plays and the episode begins! This week begins our new arc on fashion. Paige is giddy and Amber is gamely along for the ride- it's what best friends do for each other. We start this shorter thematic arc appreciating (and mocking) the items of clothing that poor Starfleet members spend like 90% of their time wearing- the uniforms. Next week we'll look at some of our favorite alien and civilian fashion choices, and we'll round out our fashion arc with one final episode where Paige finally gets to address the bedazzled elephant in the room- prom dresses in space. SPOILER ALERT: To miss the totally unavoidable Discovery spoilers in the first part of this week's show, feel free to skip ahead to 38:00 where we get down to the real topic at hand. Join us today for part 2 of our Women of Deep Space 9, where we highlight two Bajoran women on opposite ends of the spectrum, and dip our toes in the stormy waters of minority representation in entertainment when we wrap up with our last non-commissioned lady. Our second break has no officially happened. Amber and Paige are taking a week off to deal with everything that is happening in the Capitol and around the country. We encourage everyone to see after their mental health during this turbulent time. We'll be back next week with part of our Side Mission on the women of Deep Space 9.
SPOILER...oh wait, there's no spoiler alert today! We will not be starting the episode with a discussion of a new episode of Discovery, so the only spoilers to be found are of the normal 'we're talking about episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' variety. Join us for our next Side Mission- discussing some of the women who made Deep Space Nine the wonderfully well crafted show it is. This week it's all about the Trill with a tale of two Dax's, plus our favorite civilian captain. Please like, subscribe, and join the conversation! SPOILER ALERT: Just admitting it up front, half this episode is about the recent Discovery two parter. If you'd like to skip this jump forward to 1:09:00, where we start the rest of the podcast. The title of this one says it all. In our first episode of the new year, we diverge a bit from the plan and go on an existential journey through our wishes, hopes, and dreams for the future, for Star Trek, for ourselves...to be honest, we're not really sure where this episode came from or where it's going, but we had fun recording it, and Southpaw makes his first official cameo. We hope you'll come along on this rollercoaster of an episode and find some inspiration and reinvigoration along the way. Please like, subscribe, and join the conversation! SPOILER ALERT: To miss the totally unavoidable Discovery spoilers in the first part of this week's show, feel free to skip ahead to 19:15 where we start the episode proper. Today we talk about the baddest, scariest, space zombies in the Trek verse...and their sexpot overlord. Paige is pissed, Amber is tipsy, and yes, we left the part about android ejaculate in...you're welcome. We hope you enjoy this at times thoughtful, at times giggle infused, and somewhat off the rails episode! Please like, subscribe, and join the conversation! SPOILER ALERT: Yes, we're still starting with the spoilers...to the Discovery talk in the first part of this week's show, feel free to skip ahead to 36:15 where the music starts and we move into the episode proper. Get out the Bloodwine and the Gagh, and let's get this galactic throwdown started! That's right, this week is all about Klingon women- attitude, hair, boob windows and all. Amber and Paige highlight some of their favorite feisty females, from villainesses to diplomats, Klingon women play many roles but area always standing up for themselves...and of course their family honor. SPOILER ALERT: As usual, this week Amber and Paige talk about a new episode of Discovery, so please beware of spoilers. However, we actually start the episode with a shout out to Amber's cousin Michael, and it's a very sweet tribute to a life long Trek fan, so feel free to listen until about 3:15, and then skip forward to 27:00 for the rest of the episode proper. On this week's audio adventure, we talk about the very conspicuous lack of matriarchal societies in the Star Trek oeuvre: from one end of the galaxy to the other, from one quadrant to the next, and from series to series, we continue to see this imbalance. Amber and Paige discuss two specific episodes which approach the matriarchy in very different ways, and speculate on the missed opportunities more matriarchies might have brought. SPOILER ALERT: To miss the totally unavoidable Discovery spoilers in the first part of this week's show, feel free to skip ahead to about 31:30 where the music break kicks in and we get into the episode proper. New Arc! Tonk'peh. Aefvadh. Qechmey'e' majQo'...that's right, this week we're talking aliens. The good, the bad, the ugly, and the way too pretty, join us this week to dip into the xenobiology of the galaxy we call home- according to Star Trek anyway. SPOILER ALERT: Wait, there isn't one! Since all we gave you last week was spoilers, this week you can just start at the top and listen without a care for spoilers...for the new season of Discovery that is- we're still totally spoiling everything else that's come before, as usual. This week we wrap up our Women of TNG side mission with Marina, Denise, and Susan ("who?" you might ask- well listen to the end to find out!). From British invasion to a Hollywood dynasty, this week's women are just as unique as their characters. Please like, subscribe, and join the conversation! SPOILER ALERT: Well...we did it again...we fell down a wormhole and accidentally spent an entire episode talking about something that should have taken no more than a 20 minute intro- two weeks worth of new Discovery episodes. In our defense, they were episodes with a lot to dive into, and we hope you enjoy diving into it with us. So, suffice it to say that this whole episode is one big spoiler, but we had fun with it! Here's the link to the Variety article we reference in the episode: https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/star-trek-discovery-trans-non-binary-blu-del-barrio-ian-alexander-1234824183/ Join us again next week as we finish our real Side Mission on the women of TNG, where we'll talk about Marina Sirtis, Denise Crosby, and Susan Sackett. SPOILER ALERT: To miss the totally unavoidable Discovery spoilers in the first part of this week's show, feel free to skip ahead to 21:10 where we have a short, non-spoiler intro before getting into the episode proper. We're coming to you this week with an unusually long (but hopefully enjoyable!) Side Mission episode, diving deep into Gates McFadden and Whoopi Goldberg - two of our favorite Next Generation women. *Technical note: Towards the end of the episode you'll notice Amber's recording goes a little fuzzy as her recording equipment was being temperamental, but the show must go on! We hope your listening ears aren't too offended, and will be back with tip top sound quality next week. Please like, subscribe, and join the conversation! It's our first break! Amber and Paige are taking the week off from recording because the US Election has overloaded their data systems. We'll be back next week with round two of our Side Mission on the women of The Next Generation.
Spoiler Alert! For the next 8 weeks, Amber and Paige will be talking about the newly released Discovery episode at the top of the show. If you want to watch along with us and check out our discussion, feel free to start this podcast at the beginning, but if you want to just move on to the episode proper, skip forward to 14:10! Today we talk parity in all of its forms: gender identity, representation, sexuality, and where we thought this conversation would begin- nudity. Does a ripped Kirk shirt off set a barely-there, ingenue of the week space bikini? Does more objectification of men make the objectification of women more palatable? Does an episode about a non-gendered culture really speak to the diversity of the human experience, or does it show the cultural limitations of our perspective to even suggest that binary gender is something that all races in the galaxy would experience? Explore these questions and more with Paige and Amber in this weeks' episode.
Rounding out our three episode Holodeck mini-arc, we finally made it to the prurient pursuits of the starship Enterprise...well of her crew members anyway, the Enterprise herself has unimpeachable character. From discussion of the morality behind building your own ideal (but totally not real) mate, to cringing at the future of HR departments (or lack thereof), to musings on who has to clean the Holodeck (really Amber?!), this one's a lot of fun.
We're back for round two of the Holodeck games! This week Amber and Paige highlight some of the things they enjoy about Holodeck centric plots, and some of their favorite Holodeck episodes.
So the Holodeck is totally cool and a rad bit of sci-fi invention- right? Turns out, enjoying it might take a little more suspension of disbelief than the girls are willing to give it. This week Amber and Paige get into the dirt with their (read: Paige's) least favorite and most problematic piece of technological Trek voodoo. And in true RIFpod fashion, what started as a single episode has become a three part mini-series...so sit back and ponder along as we ask the really essential questions, like: How the heck do you make holographic wetness??
It's time to talk skin and aliens, and who better to start with than our favorite female forward culture- Betazoids! This week Paige and Amber get in touch with their empathic sides in this conversation about what it means to live in a culture where being emotionally naked is a fact of life. Get on board with us as we take on nudity in the stars.
They're naked! We're angry! Need we say more to get your attention? This week Paige and Amber pull back the boudoir curtain to air all the Trek dirty laundry and hunt down every scrap of bared skin they can find. They talk titillation, toplessness, and the travesty that is Justice.
What's this? An episode on a Thursday? Buckle in for this shuffle through the sex files, where Amber and Paige are surprised (really?) to find they have a LOT to say on the subject of the sexiest characters in Star Trek. At the top of the list- what is it that makes a character sexy? Appearance? Charm? Joie de vivre? Often times it's not the obvious, and we really like that!
This week we bring you Part 2 of our first side mission- because the content was just too good to cover in one! Paige and Amber are beaming the stories of two more influential original women into your sound waves...so tune in and listen along.
This week, we're taking a break from the thematic arcs, and going on a side mission. Amber and Paige take a deep dive into some of the original women who paved the way to the stars- where no woman had gone before.
This week it's all about the babes...Space Babes that is. Listen in as Paige and Amber tackle a somewhat troublesome trope, analyzing the different Babes we see throughout the different series' and what makes them so babelicious. Plus Paige has another classification system- so buckle in for the science of 'Babe'!
Rape is not a plot device. This week, the girls dive into the thorny woods of violence against women, and Trek episodes which specifically use physical and mental violation of women as their main plot device. What is the message these episodes send to viewers, and in a series of shows with the lofty goal of presenting a utopian future, is it too much to ask for plots that don't hinge on violence against women?
This week, the ladies discuss the Kirk smirk, randy Riker, charming Chakotay and the ‘Boys will be Boys’ nature of Star Trek. Does Star Trek really portray womanizers? Why is there one in every cast and why do we love to love them? In addition, we touch on the cultural perception of women enjoying sex and the contrast of the Maneater vs. the Ladies Man.
This is the beginning so let's start at the very beginning: The Original Series. The series that started a phenomenon promised to ‘boldly go where no man has gone before’, and for better or worse it went there with style and a whole suitcase full of sexism- so we have to ask: does its idealistic message justify the means?
Get to know Amber and Paige as they begin what will hopefully be a five year voyage into female themes and topics in Star Trek. This week the ladies introduce themselves and discuss what they love about this beloved world.
Welcome to Resistance Is Female! Join Paige and Amber as they delve into one of the most complex, long spanning universes on television. Every other Monday, they explore elements in Star Trek from a female point of view.
