Orion Pictures wanted a 'red, white, and blue-collar Bond' in Remo Williams, but budget cuts didn't allow the movie to truly bloom. It's still a rollicking good time, even if you don't think it's as good as it was when you first saw it. Starring Fred Ward, Joel Grey, Wilford Brimley, J. A. Preston, and Kate Mulgrew.

Watch the documentary for free here: https://youtu.be/IlpMNtAPxUo Star Trek Voyager, premiering in 1995, faced challenges yet became a beloved series, highlighting the journey of its diverse crew and pioneering a female captain. Voyager's Launch: Premiered in 1995, attracting over 21 million viewers, surpassing previous Star Trek series. Female Captain: Introduced Captain Janeway, breaking gender barriers in a male-dominated genre. Viewer Attrition: Despite a strong start, the show faced declining viewership over its seven seasons. Concept Development: The show evolved from secret meetings among producers discussing character dynamics and story arcs. Unique Premise: Voyager's crew was stranded 70,000 light years from home, creating fresh storytelling opportunities. Casting Challenges: The casting process was lengthy, with numerous actresses auditioning before landing on Kate Mulgrew. Cultural Impact: Over time, Voyager garnered respect, with fans recognizing its representation of Starfleet ideals. Cultural Milestone: Voyager's introduction of a female captain not only advanced gender representation but also reshaped expectations in sci-fi narratives. This move inspired future series to embrace diverse leads. Exploration of Isolation: The show's premise of being far from home resonated with themes of survival and adaptability, reflecting real-world challenges and the human spirit's resilience. Strong Character Dynamics: The interplay among crew members, especially with Janeway and her diverse team, highlighted the importance of collaboration and unity in overcoming adversity. Viewer Engagement: The initial high ratings were not sustained, indicating that consistent quality and compelling storytelling are crucial for maintaining audience interest in long-running series. Evolving Narrative: The shift in storytelling from episodic adventures to character-driven arcs demonstrated the franchise's growth and willingness to experiment with deeper themes. Production Challenges: The behind-the-scenes struggles, including casting issues and production delays, illustrate the complexities of bringing innovative ideas to life in television. Legacy of Voyager: Over time, Voyager has been re-evaluated by fans, leading to a newfound appreciation for its contributions to the Star Trek universe and its broader cultural significance.
Thanks for sending in your questions! Anthony and Laurie asked Star Trek: Prodigy co-executive producer Aaron Waltke our listeners’ burning questions and squeezed in some of our own. He talked about time travel, Gwyn’s hair, convincing Star Trek actors to join the cast (and the ones who passed), connecting the show to the others in the Star Trek Universe, the show’s performance on Netflix, and much more. The podcasters wrapped things up after Aaron left by sharing Seth Meyers’ speculation on the redacted Star Trek comments in the January 6th court filing, Kate Mulgrew’s play in NYC, and Laurie’s upcoming appearance at Parthenon Books in Syracuse, NY, to promote her Gilmore Girls book.

Tread Perilously's Star Trek Month 2024 continues with the long-delayed episode of Star Trek: Voyager called "Bride of Chaotica!" Tom Paris and Ensign Harry Kim's afternoon playing chapter 18 of "The Adventures of Captain Proton" is disrupted when Voyager runs aground in a "subspace sandbar." It immediately disrupts quality of life systems on the ship and prevents the Holodeck from shutting down Paris's program. Meanwhile, transdimensional aliens materialize in the simulation and assume its 1940s movie serial nature to be real because they are energy-based life-forms. Will Paris figure out a way to communicate or will it fall on Captain Janeway to save the day by becoming the bride of Chaotica? Erik is immediately annoyed to be watching a Tom Paris episode of Voyager. Justin can't help but notice its similarity to a certain episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Episode co-writer Bryan Fuller also makes Erik doubtful it will be able to rise out of its Paris deficit. Justin argues for Garrett Wang to be the true lead in the story. Various 1940s movie serial tropes are examined. Kate Mulgrew gets top marks for understanding the assignment. Tuvok turns out to be a font of deadpan gold. Justin is dismayed by the lack of Robert Picardo and circumstances force a discussion of Neelix.
WHAT THE PARADOX? It's the end of the time loop as we know it and Voyager feels fine -- kinda, sorta. Getting back from 20th century Earth isn't without its complications though, as Captain Janeway discovers that American capitalism is as evil as the Borg when Henry Starling reveals that he plans to travel to the 29th century in his stolen time ship despite her warnings that such a trip would cause a temporal explosion. Meanwhile, Tom Paris and Rain Robinson grow so close that Sarah Silverman has off-screen stories about making out with some of the show's actors during her guest stint; Chakotay & B'Elanna are captured by militiamen; and, The Doctor gains the ability to leave Sickbay, forever altering the character. Ah, but do all these qualities make the episode a TREK, MARRY, or KILL?The grades begin at (20:28).
TIME TO DIE? Voyager's involvement in a temporal explosion throws them into a causality loop that brings them to Los Angeles in the year 1996. Bryan & Kristen continue their Star Trek Predicts... Today! theme month to see just how well the writers blended Star Trek and 1996. Meanwhile, there's plenty of talk about what life was like in the late 1900s, a serious correction to last week's episode, and education about women's clothing that you don't want to miss.
