The storms here in the northeast really pelted us hard, and our schedule guest for the evening, Jack of Picard's Ready Room, needed to reschedule as his power was knocked out. We do have my Cousin Sheri in to talk about a bunch of stuff: More crazy real estate news from New York that may be a harbinger for more nationwide things to come, the sandal of a giant been found in Nevada, and plenty of time for a serious dive into the Weird Travel Stories thread, plus anything else that comes up along the way. [SNW showrunners interview starts at 11:46 | SNW review starts at 26:13] Tony and Laurie start with an exclusive update on how the WGA Strike is affecting season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (with an update from the SNW showrunners), then take a look at new and incoming Trek merch: a Seven of Nine pre-Picard novel from David Mack, a one-off Shaxs comic book from IDW, an interview with the writers of the Star Trek: Resurgence game, and the Star Trek: Infinite strategy game. Then they shift into Strange New Worlds mode, checking out the Ready Room preview and newly released photos. Audio from Tony’s brand-new interviews with SNW showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers is rolled in, covering Spock’s arc in season 2, the return of the Klingons, and the thinking behind choosing the Gorn as such a prominent villain. Then, Tony and Laurie review the season 2 premiere, “The Broken Circle,” which they both liked—with some caveats. They wrap things up with a message from William Shatner to Pedro Pascal and a YA novel written by John Cho.
SPOILER ALERT: The penultimate episode of Star Trek: Picard's third and final season features the compelling return of Admiral Elizabeth Shelby, played by friend of the pod Elizabeth Dennehy. Shelby first appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation's classic two-part episode "The Best of Both Worlds" as a famous Borg fighter, so her return is particularly ironic. Elizabeth (Dennehy) talks about how she got the call; what it was like to step on to the bridge of The Enterprise-F; the level and specifics of her fandom; the (perhaps coincidental) power of The Twitter Machine; the ways in which her appearance was both a surprise and not; the value of an actor not knowing too much about the larger storyline; a sliver of hope that maybe Shelby has survived; how Elizabeth is connected offscreen to Miles O'Brien, Keiko O'Brien, Soji Asha; and Scott Bakula, who played Enterprise NX-01 captain Jonathan Archer; the stress of keeping Shelby's appearance secret; how small the Star Trek casting universe is; a special appearance by Wesley Crusher himself, Wil Wheaton, now the host of the Star Trek companion show, The Ready Room; how little Elizabeth misses her 80s hairstyle; and what you do not want to be doing while you're saving the world. (Length 28:19)

Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens About Old Line Spirits: Mark McLaughlin and Arch Watkins met in the Navy flying EA-6B Prowlers, ended up stationed in the same reserve squadron in Baltimore, and embarked on civilian careers after retiring from the Navy. But when you've spent decades flying off aircraft carriers and being stationed all over the world, a desk job isn't enough. The solution? Whiskey. American Single Malt, to be exact. In 2015, they connected with the owners of Golden Distillery, two Vietnam vets looking to pass the torch. Their tutelage and equipment was the start of Old Line Spirits. McLaughlin and Watkins opened Old Line Spirits in 2017 with plenty of distillery space, a courtyard bar and The Ready Room, Maryland's first full beer, wine and spirits cocktail bar in a distillery. They produce American Single Malt whiskeys and aged Caribbean rums. Their Sherry Cask Finish ASMW was just named the Best American Single Malt and awarded double platinum in the Ascot Awards. McLaughlin and Watkins are also actively involved in the campaign to get the TTB to standardize a definition for the American Single Malt category. Creating a Trek "After Show"The concept of an "after show," a panel discussion following a specific episode, became popular during "The Walking Dead" with "The Talking Dead." The concept would continue in various genre shows, eventually culminating in the current era of Star Trek with first "After Trek" and then the "The Ready Room" on Paramount+. Does that format work? And how are they different from podcast episode reviews? The trio pitch separate formats for "after shows" for the current Trek shows "Discovery," "Lower Decks," "Picard," "Prodigy," and "Strange New Worlds." Do you enjoy after shows? What would you like to see for this type of behind the scenes discussion for Star Trek?

The State of Star Trek 2022 We long called the 1990s the golden age of Star Trek. From 1993 to 1999, two series overlapped one another on the airwaves and, once The Next Generation left the small screen, we even got doses of three incarnations of Gene Roddenberry's vision from time to time. But it all came to an abrupt end in May 2005, with the final episode of Enterprise. J.J. Abrams would later step in and tease us through the fallow years until the battle among streaming services offered a financial incentive to dust off intellectual property and Discovery came along. And now, there is more Star Trek than ever. A new golden age is upon us. In this episode of The Ready Room, recorded as we end an unprecedented 48 consecutive weeks of new Star Trek content, hosts C Bryan Jones and Larry Nemecek take a look at the state of the franchise in 2022. We discuss each of the “modern” series—Strange New Worlds, Picard, Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Discovery—dig into the fan split over old and new, and imagine what new series might be on the horizon. We also debate the pros and cons of the streaming model for storytelling and talk about how Star Trek and Star Wars are pushing each other forward. Wil Wheaton is More Than Just A Geek Put on your best space sweater and prepare to travel with the greatest nerd among us, Wil Wheaton! You already know Wil as Wesley Crusher from Star Trek TNG and the host of "The Ready Room," among his appearances on "The Big Bang Theory" and countless other geeky places. Needless to say, this interview travels across the galaxy of topics ranging from fun to heavy. We discuss Wil's new book "Still Just A Geek" and what is different about the Wil, who wrote his first book nearly two decades ago, compared to the person he is today, including a more comprehensive understanding of who he is and coming to terms with many uncomfortable aspects of himself. Wil speaks candidly about his recent public announcement of his battles with alcoholism and sobriety, as well as the trauma caused by his parents and how he continues to fight the good fight by "doing the work" while advocating for mental health awareness for others afflicted with anxiety, depression, and trauma and abuse-related PTSD. From there, it's onto Trek talk as we chat about Wil's favorite action figure of, Wesley Crusher, and why toys were so important to him as a kid, memories of filming "The Game" with Ashley Judd and "The First Duty" with Sir Patrick Stewart (and whether or not Tom Paris is actually Locarno from that same episode) and the most valuable lesson he learned from his Star Trek TNG family. Plus, what Wil Wheaton understands about "Stand By Me" and his performance in that film today that he didn't know when he was a child, time on the set of "Toy Soldiers" with Sean Astin, and what Wil wants to leave behind as his legacy. Clint Emerson is a former Navy SEAL who spent most of his life making split-second decisions during high-stress situations. After Clint realized this method of rapid decision-making wasn't practical, he developed a different mindset. This improved Navy SEAL mindset involved preparing for the worst to happen long before the situation occurs. When you use this decision-making method, you can prepare your decisions beforehand, eliminating stress. The same concept applies to business as well. As entrepreneurs, we thrive off making rapid decisions. However, the situation would run a lot smoother and cause less headache if we spent more time preparing for the worst to happen. Being proactive is much more effective than being reactive during stressful situations. Create the life you've always wanted!

Actor, personality, and all-around nerd, Wil Wheaton beams up to the show to discuss his new book, "Still Just a Geek: An Annotated Memoir." During the interview, we cover a lot of Wil's amazing career. Wil shares stories from his time starring in Stand By Me, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and The Big Bang Theory. We also discuss The Wil Wheaton Project, The Ready Room, The Family Guy TNG reunion, and Tabletop. Wil shares one of his favorite moments while on The Big Bang Theory and shares an amazing story about William Shatner from that episode. We also discuss Wil's story of the first time he met William Shatner on the set of Star Trek V. We also discuss Wil's love of Sharknado (and how his tweets helped launch it into infamy) and his guest spot in Sharknado 2 where tragically he was eaten by a shark. We end by discussing the meta experience of narrating the book Ready Player One (which references Wil Wheaton). Enjoy my conversation with evil Wil Wheaton, Gordie Lachance, and Wesley Crusher. Today we hear the Combat Story of Patrick Kinsella and his five deployments with 1st Ranger Battalion to Iraq and Afghanistan. [NOTE: We're launching on Patreon soon. Register to get notified at https://www.combatstory.com/patreon] Not only do we get to hear of Patrick's first hand combat experience, which includes nighttime raids on HVTs and Mi-17 crashes, but he also gives us a glimpse into one of the most interesting and relatively unheard of group of special operators in the war: the Afghan Army's Female Tactical Platoons (FTP). Patrick spent years fighting in Afghanistan but found his time training and leading the brave women of the FTPs to be the most rewarding. The FTPs were Afghan women who volunteered to go through special operations training and selection programs, from basic marksmanship to fast roping to explosives training and more, and who would go out in the darkness with US Special Operations Forces on target. Patrick continues to support the women of the FTPs who were evacuated from Afghanistan in 2021 to help them find a place in the US and share their incredible stories. We'll share some resources to help these women who sacrificed so much for us to make a life here in the US now. I hope you enjoy this selfless Combat Story about so much more than just one man as much as I did. On May 2nd, 2005, 2 F/A-18 Hornets from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323, the “Death Rattlers”, collided over central Iraq. After two successful ejections, both pilots were tragically dragged to death in their parachutes after reaching the ground. The event rocked the families, the squadron, and the air wing. With us today is retired Marine LtCol Ben “Big Gay” Buerke, a MAWTS 1 IP, former Commanding Officer, and was a Captain with VMFA-323 on that deployment. We talk about his background, the culture of the Death Rattlers, and his personal account of that tragic day. But most importantly, we talk about how the squadron reacted, the leadership lessons learned, and how the Ready Room, the families, and the Marines took a devastating event and used it to galvanize them closer together. In memoriam. LtCol John "Dukes" Spahr USMC Capt Kelly "Trash" Hinz USMC
Few people can take a perfectly good and honest story and embellish it to no avail, better than a Marine Corps pilot. And so it is that The Ready Room podcast was born. My name is Phillip Goebel, my callsign is SUSAN. I'm a hockey player from the Midwest turned Marine Corps F-18 Pilot. If you google my name you'll probably find a mugshot, some college hockey stats, and a picture of a restaurant I owned back in the day. Lucky for me in 15 years on active duty I was blessed to serve with some absolutely amazing people, and even a few that slipped through the cracks. Regardless, in every situation and encounter, whether it was a high or low stress scenario, there were lessons learned, many that were learned the hard way, and some of which were paid in blood. The goal of this podcast is to extract these lessons and share them with the world. Through the avenues of intelligent conversation, humor, history, shenanigans, and culture; I hope to share with people stories and lessons that will resonate in their daily lives. It might be something as simple as, hey, don't get hammered with your old Tomcat buddies and crash your golf cart on the arresting gear, because that did happen, or something as serious as, how to genuinely take care of your people and how to get them to put every ounce of who they are into what it is they are doing. In my experience, I've found that a strong dose of humor paired with a good cup of coffee or a quality beverage or two, will help keep things rolling. I hope you enjoy it, if you don't, no worries, I encourage you to listen to Jocko Willink, Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan. There's tons of really good brain food out there that's worth checking out. And for those of you that do stick around, I hope you enjoy the ride. I am your host, SUSAN, and this is the Ready Room Podcast.
