Don't drink the water! Maya finds out too late that she shouldn't drink the contaminated tap water in her 64 oz. tennis water jug. The water actually had a forced cell phone Amber Alert. Needless to say, she isn't going far from home today. Amy recaps the Nelly concert after the Twins game. You can always count on Nelly! Amy can't say a picture of the pitcher. Try it…it's tough. Maya went to Summerfest in Milwaukee on the 4th of July. She's never done something so not her. Long story short—she kicks it off with an interesting Uber ride, checks into a beautiful, haunted hotel, and dives headfirst into concerts at Milwaukee's Summerfest. Maya does festival math. The lineup is stacked…Everclear, Oates (of Hall & Oats), Chicago, Frost Children, a random cover band, and Fountains of Wayne. Oates' arrangement of the song Maneater is wild! Why are people waiting in the world's longest line for lemonade?!?!? Turns out Maya's demographic is still old men. They love to talk to a "young gal". Also, we just want to have a hot dog at a festival, for Pete's sake! After a lifetime of accommodating everyone, Amy finally puts her foot down and advocates for herself! Public Service Announcement: Just Listen to Chelsea Handler's Book, I'll Have What She's Having. It's a love letter to every woman. Finally, bring back the free summer concerts!

Very few duos - sorry, they told us they don't like to be called that!-- have achieved as much commercial success as Daryl Hall and John Oates. (Don't even THINK of referring to them as "Hall & Oates, by the way.) With a run really beginning in the mid-1970s through the '80s, these two Philly natives ruled the airwaves with their "Blue-Eyed Soul"-infused brand of pop and rock. Their "best of" compilation, the optimistically titled "Rock 'n Soul Part 1," is an essential addition to anyone's music collection. All the hits are here - and man, did they have hits: "Sara Smile," "She's Gone," "Maneater," "Private Eyes," "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)," and on and on and on.
In the late 1890's Nepal villagers began disappearing from the forests and surrounding areas at an alarming rate. They soon discovered that they were being attacked by a 500 pound Bengal tiger. The Nepal army was able to scare the tiger to the Champawat region of India, but not before it had claimed the life of 200 villagers. In Champawat, its killing rampage continued, claiming 236 more lives. This week, we'll discuss The Champawat Maneater and why it started targeting humans as its prey, why it claimed so many human lives, and the man that was able to finally stop her killing spree! We discuss the film's gruesomely fun kills, over-the-top acting, energetic yet chaotic atmosphere & its punk rock elements. Although many people still think of him as the “And Oates” in the extraordinarily successful Hall & Oates, one of the best-selling duos of all time, John Oates stands on his own as a prolific singer, songwriter, producer, and solo artist. Not only was he responsible for writing or co-writing any number of the pair's major hits — “Sara Smile,” “She's Gone,” “Out of Touch,” “You Make My Dreams,” “I Can't Go For That (No Can Do),” and “Maneater,” among them — but he's a an assured solo artist all on his own. Over the course of the past twenty years or so, he's released a steady succession of individual albums that have helped broaden his parameters while also bringing him back to his roots in seminal Americana. A member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he continues to make his name all on his own, given that his prolific prowess continues to carry him from past to present. Oates' new album Reunion finds him reconnecting with his past precepts and rediscovering his roots in the sounds that influenced him early on and continue to inspire him as he continues his remarkable journey as defined in his 2017 memoir, Change of Seasons. He graciously took time to speak about the new album and his remarkable backstory with Lee and Billy for another enlightening edition of My Backstage Pass. The Portuguese-Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado has sold more than 40 million records worldwide and won awards including a Grammy. Her upbeat, genre-defying pop music dominated the charts in the 2000s, from her break out hit I'm Like A Bird to her 2006 album Loose and its stand out hit Maneater. After finding that her music had been rediscovered by a whole new generation of fans on social media, she's back with 7, her first album since 2017.In February 2021, a coup returned Myanmar to military rule, overthrowing the democratically elected government. Under the regime, violence against civilians has escalated, with thousands jailed, tortured and killed – although the numbers are believed be much higher. At least three million people have been displaced. Just two weeks ago, a UN Report outlined the gendered impact of the coup: It found that military forces have committed widespread forms of sexual violence. However, despite the coup's devastating impact, women and girls are taking on key roles within the resistance movement. Also this month, there have been separate news reports that women are being conscripted into the military. Nuala discussed the situation with Tin Htar Swe, the former head of The BBC's Burmese Service.Woman's Hour broadcast from Lord's Cricket Ground as England faced New Zealand for the culmination of a five-match T20 International series and to mark 25 years since the Marylebone Cricket Club, that runs Lord's, allowed women to become members. During the programme she spoke to World Cup winning cricketer Ebony Rainford-Brent and the England and Wales Cricket Board's Head of the Women's professional game, Beth Barrett-Wild. She also spoke to girls about why they love playing cricket. Nuala was also given a tour of Lord's – taking in the spots of most significance to women's history at the ground. She heard about Baroness Rachel Heyhoe Flint and Martha Grace, the mother of a player who is considered one of the all time greats, W. G. Grace. Her tour guide Rachel Pagan met her just outside the ground. Taking children out of school during term time was in the news this week as the new Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said there "will have to be consequences" for parents who fail to keep their children in school. It's illegal to take children out without the school's permission. Minimum fines, imposed by local authorities, for taking children out of class without permission for five school days will rise from £60 per child to £80 per child from August.. In her first interview since taking up the post, the education secretary spoke to the BBC's education correspondent Branwen Jeffries. We hear from parent, Laura Melling who recently went viral on TikTok for discussing a fine she'd received after taking her young daughters out of school for a holiday during term time and we spoke to journalist and parenting author Lorraine Candy.Annie Garthwaite's second novel, The King's Mother, tells the story of historical figure Cecily Neville, mother of Edward IV and Richard III. Annie believes Cecily's role in the Wars of the Roses has been hugely underestimated by historians and her novel places her firmly at the heart of the action. Essie Fox has written five historical novels and her most recent, The Fascination, is set in the world of Victorian theatres and travelling fairs. They join Nuala to discuss the challenge of writing the stories of women who have been overlooked by the history books.Adele, one of the world's best-selling music artists, has revealed in an interview ahead of her concerts in Munich next month, that she will be stepping back from music temporarily after growing tired of the slog of fame and missing her old life. She talks about her "tank being empty" and the author and broadcaster Emma Gannon joined Anita to talk about when it all gets a bit much.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Annette Wells Editor: Rebecca Myatt

He may not be the tallest musician going, but John Oates casts a immensely large shadow in music. One part of the most successful duo in music history—Daryl Hall & John Oates—he co-wrote a number of the band's legendary catalogue including "Sara Smile," "She's Gone,” "Out of Touch,” "You Make My Dreams,” "I Can't Go for That," "Maneater” and more. In 2014, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 2014, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But at 76, Oates is taking stock in his life, reflecting on the love he shares with his wife and their son, with his father who is 100, and those who are truly important to him. “I wanted to make sure that things were clean and tight as I move forward in my life,” Oates said on the most recent episode of The Load Out Music Podcast. Without question, he's moving on—leaving his immensely successful business and artistic partnership with Hall behind, working to sell his stake in the duo's catalogue, touring with a new band and performing songs that have deeper meaning in his life. Oates is simply going forward and disconnecting from things that have held him up. He lays it all on the table in a great conversation on the Load Out. Enjoy!

John Oates has been at this for a while. Ever since his family moved from New York to a small town outside of Philly in the early 1950s, he has been feverishly creating American roots music, blues, rock n roll and unabashed pop. After teaming up with his Temple college mate Daryl Hall at the dawn of the 1970s - Oates co-created a mind-melting run of funky rock-pop hits that still play on constant radio rotation: 21 albums, ten of them number one records which sold over 80 million units. It's not a shock to see that Hall & Oates are technically the most successful duo in modern music history. But Oates' half a dozen solo records are quite underrated (look to the stripped back Arkansas to see what I mean ), and with the new LP Reunion dropping this week, we see him sonically rejuvenated, leaning into his love of early 20th century acoustic music and how his family history formed who he is today. For this listener and songwriter - getting to dive into how “Maneater”, “She's Gone”, “You Make My Dreams” was quite a thrill, but I was also moved at how generous Oates was towards the young artists he gets to work with (Sierra Hull for one) and how he has reacted to the fractious relationship with his former co-creator Daryl Hall with a sense of zen, even as the tabloids spin yarns of their many years in the making “breakup”. While playing arenas may be in his past, Oates is excited to play intimate shows telling the humble stories on Reunion like “This Field Is Mine” which he teamed up with beloved mandolinist Sam Bush.
On this week's episode, we are talking about a handful of games we have played plus some entertainment news. A brand new segment is introduced where Matt picks a game for Christian to play and vice versa. Christian played Maneater, a game where you are a shark and Matt played Untitled Goose Game, where you play as a goose. You will want to stick around for Matt's rant about his game. In the back half of the episode, Matt talks about how he stumbled upon a really great game, Tales of Kenzera: Zau. We also talk about the new Amazon Prime animated series, Batman: Caped Crusader and how Microsoft just sucks with the recent closures of a few Bethesda studios. 00:00 Introduction and Housekeeping 01:49 Playlist: Watching 07:29 Playlist: Listening 14:22 Playlist: Playing 15:23 Maneater 19:51 Untitled Goose Game 29:06 Fallout 4 33:46 Tales of Kenzera: Zau 43:32 Batman: Caped Crusader Images Revealed 50:45 Microsoft's Studio Closures 58:03 Weekly Recommendations Want to support us? From monster pop hits to surprise folk albums, Canada's own Nelly Furtado has always charted her own path in music, and done it on her own timeline. After a break from the spotlight, she's now back in the studio and laying the groundwork for a new chapter in her career. She sits down with Tom to talk about her life over the last 25 years, how working on Maneater made the speakers catch fire, and how she feels about hosting this year's Juno awards.
Not every big breakup is romantic, as songwriting and performing legends Daryl Hall and John Oates are unfortunately learning in the Chancery Court of Nashville, Tennessee. Friends since college, the duo spent years honing their craft before breaking out big in the 1970s, and giving the world some of the catchiest music around - Maneater, Rich Girl, Kiss on My List, You Make My Dreams, among many others. Their half-century long partnership has existed long enough to see a revival of their early work in the last decade or two, but a recent lawsuit and restraining order may mark the definitive end of the band everybody knew as Hall & Oates. Merry Christmas, you filthy animals! Here's a little Christmas bonus for you all: the Empire Podcast's Review Of The Year. 2023 (for that is the year in question) was a year that gave us so much, cinematically speaking, from Barbenheimer to Empire's official number one film, Past Lives, and everything in-between, including the first signs of weakness in the previously invulnerable Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, in this near three-hour special, Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Ben Travis discuss all of that, and much, much more. Much, much, much more, in fact. However, Chris is very aware that, even though he set it up, he got distracted and forgot to talk about the brilliant scene in No Hard Feelings where Andrew Barth Feldman sings Maneater, and would like to rectify that now by telling you all to seek it out. Anyway, this pod is a ton of fun, despite that egregious oversight. Enjoy.
