In the 1993 Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Interface," Geordi La Forge uses experimental technology to remotely explore a stranded starship and is confronted by a deeply personal mystery. Was the image of his mother real, or something else entirely? This week, returning guest Dr. David Williams joins Larry to explore the real-world science behind this episode. Using a vintage press summary as our entry point, they discuss how TNG anticipated advances in virtual interfaces and robotics: technologies that now drive space exploration through probes, planetary rovers, and immersive control systems. From the Voyager missions to Mars rovers and the growing role of augmented reality in mission planning, Star Trek's tech continues to align with our scientific future. Along the way, Dave and Larry reflect on the emotional themes of "Interface," and how fiction about space helps us prepare for its most human dimensions.

Ever wish Star Trek was a show about two little girls being besties? Then this is the episode for you! It's “Imaginary Friend” on this all-new episode of ST:TNGeez, Not Another Star Trek Podcast, and it's coming at you right about . . . Is there anything worse than a barrel on the Enterprise? Well, how about a glowy light? Yeah, it's another one of those, but this time it isn't taking over Data and O'Brien or knocking up Troi. This time, it's becoming a lonely girl's imaginary friend (that would be a great name for an episode!). It seems Clara's dad has been dragging her all over the damned galaxy, and she's feeling the effects. Seems the poor thing doesn't have any friends. Sad, right? The glowy light being thinks so, too, so it decides to take the form of Clara's fantasy pal, Isabella. Sounds sweet until Isabella starts showing signs that she may want more from the Enterprise than a new bestie. Will Troi be able to help a lonely girl find her place on the ship? Will Picard be able to make meaningful contact with yet another entity? Will Worf stop scaring the living shit out of all the children on board? Find out in this all-new episode of ST:TNGeez Not Another Star Trek Podcast!Even more available at: https://tngeez.com

In the Star Trek: Voyager episose Renaissance Man, The Doctor doesn't quite seem himself. In fact, he seems like just about everyone else on the senior staff. But the impersonations are part of a high-stakes mission: rescue Captain Janeway from a hostile alien race despite her veryspecific orders not to. It's EMH meets ECH meets identity crisis when Renaissance Man goes into the Mission Log. Hosted by John Champion and Norman Lao Welcome to Mission Log, a Roddenberry Entertainment podcast, where we explore the Star Trek universe one episode at a time. Imagine being invited to visit the Star Trek: The Next Generation set before it even aired by none other than Bob Justman. This week, The Trek Files welcomes back Doug Drexler to share the story of his very first visit to the TNG set in 1987, spurred by a letter from legendary Trek producer Robert H. Justman. That visit changed everything. Doug quickly transitioned from fan to crew member, taking any job that would get him in the door as he built the career that would shape the look of Star Trek for decades to come. With his signature energy and humility, Doug talks about what it meant to go from wide-eyed visitor to behind-the-scenes creative force, and why, even now, he understands fans who struggle with change in the franchise he loves so much. Plus, we're in the final stretch of the Kickstarter campaign for Trek Star, the documentary chronicling Doug's incredible Trek journey.

I really hope you saw season 1 of "Picard" or the right episodes of DS9, because otherwise "Choose to Live" might not make as much sense as it could. In the main plot, multiple poor choices are made by multiple people so a story can happen. In the B plot Stamets meet scientists more stuck-up than he is while Book gets some psychic psychology. In the C plot "Star Trek" again flips death the bird. Also this week: plot swords, Mac and Tilly, and alien characters! We continue our wedding series with Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Haven" -- in which Deanna Troi's arranged marriage is interrupted by the arrival of an AIDS allegory. It's … rough. It's rough. Note: Liz says two completely inaccurate things with absolute confidence: first she claims that Wyatt is the only guest star with a costume change (false, that is Lwaxana) and then she claims that he's wearing grey in the holodeck scene (he is wearing burgundy). And unfortunately these were LOAD-BEARING INACCURACIES that couldn't easily be edited out. Never trust a podcaster. "I don't know who wrote this, but I cannot support them." We know early TNG loved a Special Boy, but why is Wyatt Miller the protagonist of this episode? Is Lwaxana Troi a reliable source of information on Betazoid culture and custom? "Genetic bonding" is a fancy word for "child betrothal" and also sounds kiiiiiiiinda sketchy? Were Ian Troi and the Millers attempting to pull some sort of eugenics shenanigans? (Streaming movie about Michelle Yeoh taking out Ian Troi, co-starring Jess Bush as young Lwaxana, when?) Liz is not a fan of Lwaxana and takes issue with the current "if you don't like Lwaxana Troi, you're a misogynist" discourse "I would like to have a dinner party with Lwaxana Troi and Cersei Lannister." Is Mon Mothma the anti-Lwaxana Troi? Either way, she's joining Lwaxana and Cersei for cocktails
Before he was an Oscar-winning makeup artist and Star Trek's go-to designer, Doug Drexler was just a teenage fan fighting to save the show he loved. This week, Doug joins The Trek Files to reflect on a remarkable journey—from the 1968 Newsday article that quoted him as a 14-year-old letter-writing activist, to working for the legendary Federation Trading Post in New York, and eventually becoming one of the franchise's most beloved creative minds. Doug shares memories of fandom in the '60s and '70s like filming Star Trek episodes off his TV with an 8mm home movie camera, then waiting days for the film to be processed just to rewatch them. That early passion led to a career in Hollywood, where he helped shape the look of Trek for decades, from The Next Generation to Enterprise and beyond. Plus, a look ahead at the upcoming documentary Trek Star, chronicling Doug's unique Trek story from sidewalk protests to the Paramount lot.

After a near disaster on a Ferengi vessel, our favorite butt-headed villains sneak on board to uncrack a glow-energy egg in which Kamala, an empathic metamorph, comes cracking out -- and this little alien is hard boiled! Seems Kamala is in the process of finis'ral, a stage of transformation in which her body is emitting heavy doses of pheromones and she's skunking up the whole ship with that stink! This was all supposed to be used on her arranged husband-to- be but instead it erects every male crew member she comes in contact with on the ship, even our Captain! (I guess they're done with the gay stuff on this show, because no ladies get aroused ! One and done, know what I mean!) Seems JLP gets a little crush on Famke, I mean Kamal and they start vibing with each other even though Kamala is an arranged marriage that will heal war between two planets -- two flipping planets, Dave!! Beverly calls it slavery, Picard calls it culture, Riker calls in for some alone time on the Holodeck! All of this and somehow more on this exciting episode of ST:TNGeez, Not Another Star Trek Podcast! It's Season 5, Episode 21 -- “The Perfect Mate”Even more available at: https://tngeez.com

Happy Halloween! We've transformed into "A Star to SPOOK Her By" this week as we take a look at a cult sci-fi horror classic. But this one has a quite explicit "Star Trek" connection in the form of Jeffrey Combs! But unlike his many "Trek" appearances, he's not behind makeup, just the respectable spectacles of Herbert West, the titular "Re-Animator". It's the film's 40th anniversary, so no better year to check it out! It's a movie that starts spooky and escalates quickly into ever-mounting craziness, culminating in a completely daft and brilliantly schlocky climax! Also this week: an alternate title, a feline turning point, and trying to stage it.
Small spoiler for this episode: This wasn't our favorite episode but we're told we are very entertaining when we don't like a episode. In this episode of Holodeck Divas we discuss another Maurice Hurley written episode of Star Trek - The Next Generation, Time Squared (s2e13). Captain Picard suddenly has a totally different personality, and Riker can't make a omelett (which has nothing to do with the rest of the story). Join us as we "celebrate" this episode of TNG.
Before "merch" was a mainstream business, Star Trek fandom had Lincoln Enterprises—and behind the scenes was a small, tight-knit team led by Majel Barrett Roddenberry. This week, The Trek Files welcomes Reinelda Estupinian, who started as Rod Roddenberry's nanny in 1974 and later worked directly with Majel beginning in 1980. Reina shares stories from the early convention circuit: selling scripts, collectibles, and Vulcan jewelry to devoted fans while keeping pace with the growing Trek phenomenon. She also reflects on Majel as both a businesswoman and a "force of nature," balancing humor, strength, and an unapologetically bold personality (sometimes delightfully embarrassing to those around her). From Gene Roddenberry's declining health to Majel's final convention appearance in 2008, Reina offers rare, heartfelt insight into the personal and professional lives behind the Roddenberry legacy.

It's another “everything goes” abstract topic on TrekRanks as our expert panel tackles “Abstract L,” labeling luminous locations and lightships of all sorts that randomly begin with the letter L. This is TrekRanks at its abstract finest! Led by host Jim Moorhouse and guests Alex Perry, Claire Little and Ken Reilly, literally anything is on the table in this fun “flash ranks” episode recorded live at STLV via a temporal anomaly. Log in and let's fly! Episode Rundown: Diagnostic Cycle: We briefly go through not only our “Abstract” roll call, but our “Flash Ranks” roll call to prep for the topic. Prime Directive: Each guest on this week's panel reveals exactly how they narrowed down their list and made their final choices. The Order of Things: All the picks are revealed with the TrekRanks' original “Five words and a hashtag” summary, along with one episode that helps frame their choice. Secondary Systems: For a few extra picks that just missed our final list. Regeneration Cycle: The panel recaps their picks and we dissect some of the interesting statistical anomalies that arose from the discussion. Temporal Inversion: We flashback to a previous episode of TrekRanks and relay some of the feedback received from listeners. If you have your own picks you would like to relay to us, please hail us at 757-828-RANK (7265) and record your own personal TrekRanks log to let us know your picks for Abstract L. (Or you can record it yourself and just DM us @TrekRanks.com on Bluesky.) Your comments could be used as part of a Temporal Causality Loop on an upcoming episode (and might get you a chance to be a guest on a future episode, too). In "Anomaly" we pick up where we left off, investigating the mystery THING that sent a space station tuchus-over-teakettle and made Kwejian an ex-planet. Book is really going through it and signs up for a TERRIFICALLY dangerous mission, which is his prerogative, but did he HAVE to bring the cat? He also gets saddled with a holo-Stamets, whose resting mourning face has nothing on Book's unrelenting anguish. Also this week: mentor Tilly, a pair of Captains, and sci-fi horror! [Anomaly: 01:05; The Blog: 54:47] [Leave the lights on: https://sshbpodcast.tumblr.com/post/798154459721138176/scary-stories-to-tell-in-the-void ] [If you missed our Jason X coverage last year: https://soundcloud.com/sshbpodcast/ten-forward-43-jason-x-spacey-jacey ]
The first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation was famously turbulent, but behind the scenes, it was also a hive of creative experimentation and open doors for new voices. This week, we welcome veteran writer/producer Cash Edwards, whose original story pitch “The True One” caught the attention of Gene Roddenberry, D.C. Fontana, and his longtime friend, producer Herb Wright. Though the script wasn't produced, it sparked genuine enthusiasm, and Herb's memo to Gene is our document of the week. Cash joins Larry to share memories from TNG's earliest days: working closely with the producers, meeting the cast, and witnessing the scramble for scripts that defined Season One. He also reveals some, let's say colorful, ideas he contributed to the development of the Ferengi's first appearance (laser bolos, anyone? leech grenades?). It's a window into a time when Star Trek was still figuring itself out and welcoming new creatives into the mix who helped shape the journey.

This week we're diving into Starfleet's creepiest corners! Where tribbles multiply faster than your ex's bad decisions, and the Gorn make every away mission feel like Predator with phasers. From salt vampires to evil exxon oil spills, we're counting down the monsters that made us scream, laugh, and question the Federation's HR policies. So grab your tricorder, dim the lights, and prepare for a transporter malfunction straight into the Monster Mash of the Final Frontier. It's spooky, it's slimy, it's Star Trek at its weirdest...and we love it.
In the Star Trek: Voyager episode Author, Author, The Doctor takes his first stab at fiction, but his holonovel hits a little too close to home. Captain Jenkins is a sadist, Tulak relishes punishment, and Lt. Marseilles just wants to get in your pants. The crew is shocked. The Doctor calls it “art,” and a Federation publisher calls it “contractually locked.” As Voyager debates creative expression vs. defamation, a deeper issue emerges: does the author have rights? “Photons Be Free”—but only if Starfleet says so, in Author, Author on this week's Mission Log. Hosted by John Champion and Norman Lao Welcome to Mission Log, a Roddenberry Entertainment podcast, where we explore the Star Trek universe one episode at a time. Each week, Mission Log examines a single episode of Star Trek, diving into its ethical subtext, metaphors, and cultural significance. Season 4 of "Discovery" starts with a BANG! Haha, no but seriously a planet gets blown up in "Kobayashi Maru". Meanwhile, Tilly and Adira have to save a space station that's gotten all squiddled and is tumbling out of control during a mission overseen by the Federation's new apparently-micromanager President. But is there something else going on? Also this week: uniform upgrades, tonal shifts, and the monsters of science fiction! “Do not pass Go! Do not collect $200!” But do make sure you listen to this episode of TrekRanks covering the “Top 5 Games and Gaming References” throughout the history of Star Trek! From Kal-toh to Kadis-kot to Kotra (try to keep those three straight!), our Trek panel of host Jim Moorhouse and guests Jenn Tifft, Caleb Dorsch and Patrick Carlin have a great time spinning the wheel and rolling dice and shuffling the cards on all the fun gaming options featured in Trek. This one is a stone cold TrekRanks classic. One of our favorites! Game on! Episode Rundown: Diagnostic Cycle: A quick review of exactly why we went with the cumbersome “games and gaming references” title, and how this episode is actually a sequel to Episode 104 of Trek Ranks: the Top 5 Sports References. Prime Directive: We get into each player's strategy for game play and how they narrowed down their picks! The Order of Things: All the picks are revealed with the TrekRanks' original “Five word summary and a hashtag,” along with one episode that helps frame their choice. If you have your own picks you would like to relay to us, please hail us at 757-828-RANK (7265) and record your own personal TrekRanks log to let us know your Top 5 Games and Gaming References. (Or you can record it yourself and just DM us @TrekRanks.com on Bluesky.) Your comments could be used as part of a Temporal Causality Loop on an upcoming episode (and might get you a chance to be a guest on a future episode, too). And don't forget to check out TrekRanks.com for our entire back catalog of episodes and a detailed rundown on every episode of Star Trek ever.
Long before the internet brought fans together, the Star Trek community thrived through newsletters, potlucks, and passionate word of mouth. This week, The Trek Files celebrates the 50th anniversary of the United Federation of Phoenix (UFP), the longest-running independent Star Trek fan club, with guest Dr. David Williams, UFP member and Arizona State University planetary scientist. Using a 1975 Arizona Republic article as our time capsule, we look back at how a group of Arizona fans kept the Trek spirit alive in the years between the show's cancellation and its cinematic rebirth. From screening parties and fan films to homemade uniforms and sci-fi socials, UFP didn't just preserve the legacy, it expanded it. Dave and Larry explore the roots of early fandom, the transition from stamps to screens, and why clubs like UFP still thrive after half a century of community-building.

In the Star Trek: Voyager episode Q2, Q drops by Voyager for a surprise visit, and he brings Q with him. No, not himself… the other Q. His son. This junior Q is every bit as powerful, unpredictable, and exasperating as his old man, with none of the charm (yet). When the Continuum threatens to de-Q him permanently, it's up to Aunt Kathy to teach Q some responsibility before he's stuck living as an amoeba or worse, a teenager. Mission Log wrangles Q, Q, and more Q in Q2. Hosted by John Champion and Norman Lao MISSION LOG SURVEY: Take the survey NOW and you could win rare, original TOS film cells! It's the end of Season 3 and the answer to the big mystery that was set up so long ago: where's "That Hope Is You, Part 2"? Oh! Here it is! On the ship, we get some underwhelming action scenes while back on the dilithium planet, Saru gets to have a successful dinner and also play space Dad! How does it all shake out? How did we feel about it? You'll have to listen and see! Also this week: wave after wave, somehow The Grinch, and the season wrap chat! In 1973, Star Trek: The Animated Series debuted as a Saturday morning cartoon, but early reviewers quickly realized it was something far more ambitious. A contemporary article from the Pantagraph (Bloomington-Normal, IL) praised the show's complex themes and emotional storytelling, declaring it a breakthrough in children's animation that adults could take just as seriously. This week, The Trek Files welcomes back Adam Kotsko, author of Late Star Trek, to explore the deeper legacy of TAS from its psychological depth and allegorical storytelling to its role as the franchise's first major reinvention. With Gene Roddenberry at the helm and the original cast returning, The Animated Series wasn't just a placeholder between live-action runs; it was a bold step into new narrative territory. Was it canon? Does it matter? Adam and Larry unpack how TAS laid the groundwork for later series, balanced nostalgia with innovation, and helped define Star Trek's long-standing ability to evolve with its audience.
