In this episode Celia Coughlin-Surridge speaks with Lanz Nalagan of the Sacramento LGBT Community Center. You are sure to be inspired by hearing about how the center started, the vast array of services it provides, and how much growth it has experienced over the years. Though COVID-19 created a need to pivot, (as with so many other nonprofits) it’s obvious that the Center made smart decisions and found ways to keep the community engaged and supported during 2020. It’s also quite evident that the Center has emerged even stronger in spite of the pandemic. Let me set the scene for you. You’re having a conversation with someone about your business or nonprofit. You’re really passionate about what you do so you’re really excited to have someone listening. Then you realize you’ve been going on for a minute, and the person you’re talking to has a deer in the headlights look. For me, this is an age-old problem. I’m such a nerd I forget that what I enjoy talking about may not interest everyone. Let alone be understandable. We, as humans in general, tend to assume the people around us and the people we meet have the same basic understanding of the topics we know about. We inherently know that not everyone has the extensive knowledge we may have, but we typically assume that everyone understands acronyms or the basic principles of what we are talking about. That is not the case and that is what we are here to work on today. Welcome to Week 3 of our 5 Weeks to Audience Growth special series brought to you by the Rooted in Community Podcast. In these short episodes, we’re focused on helping you answer key questions that will help you grow your audience with just about 15 to 30 minutes of work each week. Our Community Relations Director and Co-Founder, Mary Nauer, joins the conversation today to talk about new ways to fundraise in the upcoming year. As so many organizations had to cancel or rethink already planned fundraisers in 2020, it’s best to brainstorm new ideas now and have a plan in place for future fundraising options. There are three aspects that should be considered when making decisions on a good fundraiser for your organization. They are Key Factors: the who, what, and why. Types of Fundraisers: we share some ideas. Communications: how to effectively get the word out. Taking all of this information and talking it through with your team in a brainstorming session will help you to develop a fundraiser that will draw your community and engage by, as Mary says, “putting the fun in fundraising!”As a bonus to this episode, visit our website at https://learn.modernrootsmarketing.com/ to get your FREE copy of Steps to Planning Your Fundraiser ---This episode of the Rooted in Community Podcast was brought to you by Constant Contact.
