What happens when a for-profit giant "helps" nonprofits without asking first? Spoiler: chaos, confusion, and a lot of angry fundraisers. In this episode, I sat down with my good friend and fundraising pro, Ephraim Gopin of 1832 Communications, to unpack the wild story of GoFundMe auto-creating donation pages for 1.4 million nonprofits — without their consent. Real Listener Question: "What do we do if our nonprofit suddenly has a GoFundMe page we didn't create? Is that even legal?" When news broke that GoFundMe scraped IRS data to create "official" donation pages for nonprofits, my inbox blew up. In this episode, Ephraim and I dig into what this means for your organization — from donor confusion to legal implications — and why this so-called "help" might do more harm than good. We cover everything from the basics of what a good donation page should look like, to why this move could affect your nonprofit's SEO, compliance status, and even your donor relationships. What You'll Learn: What a solid, conversion-ready donation page really needs Why GoFundMe's "auto-created" nonprofit pages are a huge problem How this affects your branding, donor data, and trust Why accepting those donations could mess with your state fundraising compliance Whether you should claim your page, delete it, or ignore it entirely How big platforms exploit "helping nonprofits" to make a profit And what to do right now if your org was affected Bottom line: Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's ethical. Nonprofits deserve respect — not to be treated like SEO bait. Whether you're claiming or deleting your GoFundMe page, make sure the donations that come in are on your terms. If you've ever experienced adversity, it can be tough to see the positive outcome. Sometimes, it's less of a beacon and more of a silver lining. In this episode, we go inside one of the city's nonprofits that focuses on the brighter side — big, small and everything in between.Harmonic Harvest launched on Giving Tuesday in November of 2023. Less than two years later, it celebrated the opening of its headquarters inside the Marshall Building and has extended its reach well beyond the bounds of the Historic Third Ward.“I knew I wanted to create a splash. I didn't realize it was going to be way bigger than just a splash,” Harmonic Harvest founder and CEO Jenna Washuleski said. “The whole concept of Harmonic Harvest is organizations and people that are helping create a brighter future. By weaving silver linings, by collaborating, co-creating and supporting one another, we can really create a stronger collective force.”Harmonic Harvest has donated thousands of dollars to artists, organizations and entrepreneurs, and has created connections by sharing silver linings. Its space in the Marshall Building reflects that, as Washuleski's team transformed it to include an entrepreneurial marketplace, artist cove, designer's workshop and much more. While Harmonic Harvest has grown relatively fast, its foundation was developed over a lifetime. In the full episode, you'll hear Washuleski talk about all the experiences — from childhood through today — that shaped the organization.*****Episode host: Kim ShineFor more episodes, go to: radiomilwaukee.org/ourstories.Uniquely Milwaukee is supported by our Radio Milwaukee members and sponsored by the Milwaukee Public Library.

Giving Tuesday can feel like a moving target—but after this discussion with guest Jared Throneberry of Bloomerang, you'll have a clear, energizing plan. Jared blends tech savvy with a lived heart for service—Big Brothers Big Sisters, foster parenting since 2011, and community leadership—so his guidance lands with real-world credibility. His first message: you don't have to participate just because everyone else is. If the timing crowds your year-end efforts, your team is stretched thin, or the format doesn't fit your culture, sit it out without guilt. But if you choose to participate, choose to excel.Success begins with a specific purpose. “You want to have a specific campaign for this. You want to have a purpose,” Jared tells us. He urges organizations to set a reasonable, public goal and show visible progress with a giving thermometer. Momentum matters; keep supporters informed throughout the day and celebrate milestones. Matching gifts can amplify urgency—secure a partner that doubles donations during the 24-hour window.Communication is the engine. Schedule emails and posts before, during, and after the day. If social media is your lane, lean in. If your audience responds better to email or text, use those channels with clarity and brevity. Bloomerang's Giving Tuesday templates can help you prepare messages in advance, so your team is executing—not scrambling—on the day.Think beyond dollars. Jared proposes creative non-financial asks: diapers for a pregnancy center, items from an Amazon wish list, or a “share this post” action to expand reach. He even flips the script: host a donor appreciation touchpoint—coffee, breakfast, or a thank-you event—to strengthen relationships and set the tone for year-end. It's generous, memorable, and aligned with the spirit of the day.Competition can be fun, but mission comes first. Craft your campaign around a tangible need—a piece of equipment, a program milestone, or a defined impact story—so supporters feel the “why” in every update. As Jared reminds us, “Don't just give to us because it's Giving Tuesday. Give to us to this cause for this reason.” Choose intentionally, plan early, communicate often, and finish with gratitude. Do that, and #GivingTuesday becomes more than a date—it becomes a launchpad for deeper engagement.#TheNonprofitShow #GivingTuesday #NonprofitFundraisingFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

Realistic fundraising goals: Budgeting for Nonprofits with Maria and Caitlin

The Small Nonprofit

Too many small nonprofits build their budgets on optimism alone, dreaming big without the strategy or infrastructure to back it up. This episode is all about why that's a problem, and how to stop the cycle of setting fundraising goals that hurt more than they help. In this episode of The Small Nonprofit, Maria Rio and co-host Caitlin McBride get real about what it means to set realistic, strategic fundraising goals, and what happens when you don't. From pressure-filled board expectations to outlier-year budgeting mistakes, they unpack the ripple effects of extremely optimistic thinking and offer grounded ways to move forward. Want to avoid budget burnout and build goals that actually serve your mission? This episode is your guide. Listen now and share it with your board.  Realistic Fundraising Goals – The Highlights 1. Unrealistic fundraising goals hurt everyone. When goals are set without evidence or planning, it's frustrating and it's harmful. Fundraisers feel like they're being set up to fail, and the community loses access to reliable services. 2. Outlier years aren't a the baseline. Got a huge planned gift or a surge of support during a major global event? Great. But don't build your next budget assuming that lightning will strike twice. 3. The board can't just wish money into existence. When leadership insists on big numbers without offering support or resources, they undermine the very people doing the work. Fundraising isn't magical, it's methodical. 4. Growth means more than dollars. A 40% increase in revenue equals a 40% increase in workload. If you're not adding capacity, you're adding stress. 5. You need to track leading indicators. Revenue is a lagging indicator. Things like donor meetings, emails sent, and stewardship actions are what create that revenue. Track what's in your control. 3 Actionable Tips for Setting Realistic Fundraising Goals: 1. Use real data, not wishful thinking. Look at historical trends, capacity, and the types of revenue you've secured. Don't budget based on what you want to happen, budget based on what's likely. 2. Break down your revenue streams. Separate out grants, major gifts, recurring donors, etc. Goals should be specific to each stream, not one vague number slapped across the board. 3. Consider organizational context. If your staff just turned over, your website crashed last Giving Tuesday, or inflation is affecting your donors, factor that in. Not every year is a growth year. Resources and Links Connect with our host, Maria Rio Connect with our cohost, Caitlin McBride Support our show. Did you know that only 3% of charitable giving in the U.S. happens on a recurring basis, and moving that needle to just 5% could unlock $9 BILLION in annual funding for nonprofits?!Today I'm sharing my keynote from the 2025 Monthly Giving Summit and pulling back the curtain on what it really takes to stop treating recurring giving like a side hustle. It's time to make it the main event!Sustainable, predictable revenue doesn't happen by accident. It happens when we lead with intention, ask boldly, and invite people into something bigger than a one-time gift. And it starts with ONE powerful question: Do you have the habit of asking?Throughout my talk, you'll hear personal stories, industry-shifting data, and tactical strategies to help you build (or scale) a thriving monthly giving program. You'll walk away with ideas you can implement today (not next year!), to transform how you position recurring support, activate your donors, and build a future where sustainable giving becomes the norm.Resources & LinksWant to see more of the 2025 Monthly Giving Summit? Nikki & Brie are in the thick of it. Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday…there's a lot going on and Christmas isn't even here yet! The Twins had plans to spend Thanksgiving together, but some unexpected events created opportunities for Nikki and Brie to celebrate the holiday in new ways. Then the sisters turned their attention to taking advantage of big deals on Black Friday and getting the most bang for their buck, but it's a Tale of Two Sisters because one of them did all of her shopping online while the other took to the streets and covered all of her Christmas bases in person.  Upon Birdie & Buddy's request, Brie has brought an Elf on the Shelf into her house. But it's not something that Nikki's prepared to do for Matteo just yet. Matteo is turning into quite the artist and his latest muse is Charlie Brown, Nikki will explain.  During the break, Brie took the kids to see Wicked and can't stop talking about it; Nikki wonders if she will miss out on a huge cultural touchstone involving flying monkeys and incredible songs. Brie also discovered a new way to keep Birdie and Buddy from trying to steal her snacks at the movies. Is this a method that could also work for you the next time you're at the theater? Then Nikki & Brie map out what they want for the rest of their 2024. There's one month left, which means you can still end the year as you wish. One is intent on not trying to overdo it this holiday season, the other is looking forward to creating balance and laying the groundwork for a better 2025.  Nikki closes the episode out with TWO choices for Inspiration & Affirmation. Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

If we've experienced God as a God of grace, how does that change our attitude toward money? The early church was an economic subculture that was radically different from the culture around it. In fact wherever the early church is described, we see the Christians' drastic generosity—so drastic that it seemed unreasonable to those outside the church. Why were they so different? The answer is an experience of God's grace. Grace revolutionizes 1) our attitude toward money, 2) our procedure, and 3) the benefits of giving.  This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 8, 1992. Series: The Attributes of God. Scripture: Acts 4:32-37. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church.
