Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Best-selling Author and Ultramarathoner to Visit Gwinnett County Library The memoir "Finding Gobi," recounting ultramarathoner Dion Leonard's remarkable bond with a stray dog named Gobi in the Gobi Desert, has become a global bestseller, published in 24 languages. Leonard and Gobi will appear at the Gwinnett County Library's Snellville Branch on December 9 at 11 a.m. The dog accompanied Leonard through challenging terrains during an ultramarathon, capturing hearts worldwide. Despite Gobi briefly going missing in China, Leonard's story of finding her garnered widespread online support. The inspirational tale has inspired a feature film currently in production in California, set for release in 2024 or 2025. A book signing will be part of the event. For more details, contact the Snellville Branch Public Library at 770-978-5154. STORY 2: Buford Sonny's restaurant manager recognized for 'acts of kindness in her community' Sonny's BBQ celebrated Giving Tuesday by recognizing three employees dedicated to spreading kindness, including Dawn Jackson, a manager at the Buford restaurant. Jackson, named Kindness Officer, actively engages in local fundraisers, supports first responders, and aids the homeless by organizing donations with her team. As part of Sonny's Kindness Crew, Jackson could donate $2,500 to the charity of her choice, and she chose Random Acts, an organization inspiring kindness globally. Founded by actor Misha Collins in 2010, Random Acts supports various acts of kindness, aligning with Jackson's commitment to community goodwill. For more details, visit www.randomacts.org. STORY 3: Gwinnett schools communications teams earn awards for excellence At the Georgia School Public Relations Association annual conference, Gwinnett County Public Schools' Communications and Media Relations, and GCPS TV teams received over a dozen awards, including three "Best in State" honors. Recognizing communications excellence in the 2022-23 school year, awards covered writing, photography, videography/electronic media, and image/identity package design. Notable winners included Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and “Can You Believe It?” for Best in Category, while Gold Awards were secured by various projects, including “Coffee with Calvin” and “Teaching Gwinnett Podcast: School Social Workers.” The awards celebrate the team's commitment to meaningful communication and community engagement. We'll be right back Break 2: PEGGY SLAPPY – TOM WAGES – Glow Light Show STORY 4: Proposed massive apartment development must restart rezoning process after number of apartments reduced A proposed 700-unit apartment development at Sardis Church Road and Hamilton Mill Road in north Gwinnett, which led to public backlash and legislative efforts to create a new city, has been temporarily derailed. The project's withdrawal from consideration mandates a restart of the rezoning process. Critics claimed the halving of proposed units required a fresh application. The development, adjacent to Seckinger High School, sparked community concerns about density and traffic. The setback may delay the proposal's return until February. House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration and Sen. Clint Dixon praised the withdrawal, emphasizing the need to address overcrowding and traffic issues in the area. STORY 5: Study uncovers professional and social stigma people with acne experience A recent study conducted in the U.S. reveals that individuals with acne, particularly those with darker skin tones and more severe cases, face significant social and professional stigma. The research, published in JAMA Dermatology, emphasizes the need to address stigmatizing attitudes and improve access to care for individuals with acne. The study found that participants were less inclined to be friends, have close contact, or share social media photos with individuals with severe acne, particularly if they had darker skin tones. The research underscores the importance of recognizing acne as a medical condition and ensuring access to appropriate treatment. We'll be back in a moment Break 3: ESOG - INGLES 2 – DTL STORY 6: Gwinnett County bartender finalist in national Best Holiday Cocktail Contest Jay Ledbetter from Local Republic is a finalist in the Bar and Restaurant News Best Holiday Cocktail Contest, competing against national chain Eureka. Ledbetter's cocktail, the Tijuana Brass, features autumn spices and fresh herbs with tequila, creating a warm and flavorful drink. Described as a blend of savory, semi-sweet notes with rosemary and ginger, it aims to evoke holiday nostalgia. The contest, open for public voting until December 10, aims to identify the cocktail that best captures the holiday spirit. To vote for Ledbetter's Tijuana Brass, the public can visit the official contest website. STORY 7: How much do people trust AI with their health? A survey of 2,000 US adults found that more Americans trust social media and health care websites for health advice over medical professionals, with 53% consulting healthcare websites and 46% relying on social media compared to 44% consulting their personal doctor. The survey, commissioned by UserTesting and conducted by OnePoll, also revealed that 73% believe they have a better understanding of their personal health than their doctor does. Moreover, 67% of Americans have looked up their symptoms on an internet search engine, and 52% have given a list of symptoms to a large language model (LLM) like ChatGPT for a diagnosis. Additionally, 94% of respondents own a personal smart device that can track health, and 78% are confident that AI and tech companies would protect their health information. We'll have final thoughts after this. Break 4: Henssler 60 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Remember, you can watch the Superpowers for Good show on e360tv. To watch the episode, download the #e360tv channel app to your streaming device–Roku, AppleTV or AmazonFireTV–or your mobile device. You can even watch it on the web.We recorded this episode in anticipation of airing it on Giving Tuesday; we had to postpone it due to my injury.Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Kishshana: My superpower is the ability to see you. So, one of my strengths is individualization.Kishshana Palmer, founder and CEO of ManageMint, a consulting practice that supports social enterprises, nonprofits and governmental entities, especially schools, joined me to discuss her work. She shared insights across a range of topics, but I particularly valued her thoughts about a vexing problem I see occasionally in the impact sector. Changemakers–including me, if I'm being honest–sometimes excuse poor activities in one area as justified by the pursuit of the mission. For example, it isn't that uncommon for climate change-focused folks to get caught failing to adequately consider the impact of their work on disadvantaged communities. Solar panels are commonly sold to affluent folks who can afford it. It makes perfect sense on the one hand but excludes or ignores less wealthy folks' desire to go green, too.Kishshana says, “When you design for marginalized groups, you almost always design for everyone.” By working to help those who might have the most difficulty being a part of what you're doing, you ensure that everyone can. You expand your audience. She likes to apply the principle across the board, from volunteers, employees and board members to the folks you serve and others who may be impacted directly or indirectly by your work.Kishshana has built her success in part by leveraging her superpower–her ability to see individuals.AI Episode Summary* Kishshana Palmer is a leader in the world of nonprofit social enterprise and the CEO, founder, and leader of ManageMint.* ManageMint is a people-focused, equity-centered change management consulting firm that helps organizations run better, achieve their goals, and take care of their employees.* Kishshana emphasizes the importance of celebrating Giving Tuesday by supporting and investing in local nonprofit organizations.* She believes in the power of seeing and understanding individuals, which is her superpower.* Kishshana coaches organizations to cope with the inherent stress of working on big problems by helping them focus on their purpose and long-term plans.* She encourages organizations to include equity and inclusion in their mission and to design for marginalized groups, as this often benefits everyone.* Kishshana shares a specific example of using her superpower to turn around a challenging organization by getting to know the team and their needs, redesigning job descriptions, and promoting from within.* She advises people to focus on their own wellness and understanding their own strengths and weaknesses before trying to see and understand others.* To learn more about Kishshana's work, visit managemint.co or connect with her on social media at @KishshanaPalmer.* Kishshana's work makes a difference by helping nonprofits and social enterprises be more effective in their work, ultimately benefiting the people they serve. How to Develop Seeing Individuals As a SuperpowerKishshana shared the story of working with a troubled impact organization. Folks hadn't had raises in years, turnover was increasing, and disengagement was rising. She came into the organization with an eye toward getting to know each person and helping to find or define a role that would suit them, allowing them all to feel greater self-actualization in the work. That story illustrates the power of seeing individuals. The organization benefited from having everyone individually fill a role that matched their skills, passions and abilities. To learn to see others, Kishshana says a key is to see yourself more completely and objectively, recommending that you form a personal board of advisors. You need to learn to see how your own behavior contributes to challenges in team dynamics. As you begin to look at others, it is essential to look past the surface and focus on motivations, like dreams and passions, that underlie people's actions. Kishshana says that when you adapt your approach to individuals, you can be more effective.By following Kishshana's example and advice, you can see individuals more effectively. With time and practice, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Are visions of year-end dollar signs turning into lumps of coal?
Today's podcast delves into several significant topics in the non-profit sector. The U.S. has pledged $3 billion to the Climate Action Fund at COP28, highlighting efforts to help nations most affected by climate change, like island nations at existential risk. The discussion acknowledges the importance of this funding, even as it's debated whether it's sufficient. The Inflation Reduction Act is also mentioned as a major clean energy initiative by the Biden-Harris administration. Next, the podcast discusses GivingTuesday, noting a marginal increase in donations but a concerning 10% drop in donor engagement. This decline is attributed to various factors, including economic trends and political disengagement. Despite the setback, there's hope that future events, especially during election years, might boost participation. Another important topic covered is the report from the Washington Area Women's Foundation on Black women in leadership roles. The study reveals significant strains on these women, including health impacts and limited career progression, indicating a need for systemic changes in workplaces. Lastly, the podcast touches on a study by Give.org and the Better Business Bureau, showing a shift in public trust among different charity categories. Religious organizations have notably lost trust, while veterans and nonprofit hospitals are now viewed more favorably. This shift suggests changing public perceptions and priorities in charitable giving. The podcast concludes with a feel-good story about Apopo, an international charity using African giant pouched rats to detect landmines and tuberculosis. This innovative approach has made significant impacts in mine-ridden areas like Laos and Cambodia, exemplifying creative solutions in the non-profit sector. Nonprofitnewsfeed.com

John Lewis has released its annual Christmas advert; entitled ‘The Beginner.' It follows the progress of a middle aged man as he slowly, painfully and determinedly learns how to skateboard. The montage ends by revealing that he is doing all this to make his foster daughter feel welcome when she comes to stay with them for Christmas. It's touching and, for all but the most cold hearted, brings a tear to the eye. You might expect a company to release an advert at Christmas to promote their products. However, research conducted by Princeton University shows that stories are easier to remember than facts so an advert that tells a story is much more likely to be more memorable. Why is John Lewis appealing to our hearts? What are some famous Christmas ads? What makes a successful Christmas advert? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! November is synonymous with Black Friday, great deals but what cost? Over consumption is endangering our already fragile planet. Is it time to change our ways? This week Do You Really Know is highlighting concepts and initiatives about reducing our consumption. ‘Tis the season to spend, spend, spend! In the lead up to Christmas we are bombarded with adverts trying to make us buy but this year might be time to try a new approach and buy something that is new, well at least to you. Gifting second-hand, or as it is increasingly being termed, ‘pre-loved' goods was once looked down upon but with the planet drawing in waste it offers an interesting solution and can help mitigate the £42m worth of unwanted Christmas gifts that go into landfill each year. But how do you find the perfect second-hand gift? What do I need to look out for when buying second hand? What if I don't have the time to go second hand shopping? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: How to exercise safely when the weather is cold? How can I take part in Giving Tuesday? As we begin to wrap up our week on boundaries and vision, today we'll explore having clear vision for community. All of us will likely fall in different places with this topic today. It is my prayer you discover what is healthy and God-ordained for you in regards to community—and that may look completely different than someone else! We all have different capacity, and it's very important to remember that as we discuss living life with others in community. May our hearts be open today to whatever the Lord might speak. Our Scripture for today comes from Matthew 18:20, and today's worship is King Jesus by Brooke Ligertwood. -- Next week is Giving Tuesday, the one day a year when the world focuses on unleashing radical generosity. And what better cause is there to be radically generous about than helping people connect with God? A generous donor has offered a $25,000 Matching Grant to help reach First15's $110,287 Giving Tuesday goal. This means any gift you give today will be DOUBLED. You and I were made to connect — with others, and most importantly, with God. But many people struggle to find a devotional resource that's easy to understand and relatable to daily life. This is why First15 exists, and I assume it's why you're part of this growing community. You can give your Giving Tuesday gift and have it doubled by visiting supportfirst15.org!

Throughout this magnificent chapter, we have meditated on the ways of God, the benefits of walking with God, staying close to Him and learning from Him. Now as we get to the end of the chapter we see that we are all like lost sheep, and we all desperately need the salvation given to us through Christ. THe Psalm ist says "let Your hand helpme, for I have chosen Your precepts". We see the goal but only Christ has accomplished this. As we continue our week on vision and boundaries, today we'll explore what it looks like to have vision for loving and serving others well. Is loving people something you do intentionally? Or is something you believe will happen effortlessly as you live your life? Sometimes God is asking us to intentionally discover vision for certain seasons, and is specific about ways we could minister to or bless someone. Today may we learn how to serve people in a healthy, intentional way with good boundaries and vision. Our Scripture for today comes from Philippians 2:4, and today's worship is Unstoppable God by The War Within. – Next week is Giving Tuesday, the one day a year when the world focuses on unleashing radical generosity. Americans consume a lot of stuff and in turn produce a lot of waste. The average American generated 46 pounds of just e-waste in 2019. But what if there was a way to design an economy that’s less wasteful and more environmentally friendly? Casey McIntyre, 38, died of ovarian cancer on November 12, 2023. In the days leading up to her death, she urged friends to donate to a campaign that would cancel the medical debt of strangers. By the time she died, that campaign raised nearly $200,000, enough to pay off nearly $19 million in medical debt. As of today, it has more than tripled its impact. The gospel changes the way we look at our money and possessions. If we understand the gospel, we should have a radically different relationship with money than what our culture says is normal. To look at what the Bible says about this, let's look at this very famous passage: Jesus' encounter with the rich young ruler. From the rich young ruler, we can learn 1) that money has great spiritual danger attached to it, 2) how money is spiritually dangerous, 3) why money is spiritually dangerous, and 4) how to escape it. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on December 6, 2015. Series: What We Are Giving: The Dynamic of Grace. Scripture: Luke 18:18-30. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. After a reflection on Sam's birthday (today!) and the anniversary of Mike Cernovich's attempted cancellation of Sam, he and Emma take a look at a report, first seen on an Israeli public broadcast then translated by the Times of Israel, that Prime Minister Netanyahu appealed to members of the Likud Party that, basically, he has no allegiance to President Biden and will do whatever he wants when it comes to Gaza. Wonder how folks in the Biden administration feel about that! Then, they break down Moore v. United States, a case the Supreme Court will hear in the next few weeks that would essentially, before it'd even have a chance to become government policy, foreclose the possibility of a wealth tax in this country. After, they touch on a report from the Seattle Times on local Macy's worker walking off the job for better pay but (surprise!) also due to fears for their safety because the business they work for isn't interested in actually creating a safe working environment free from threats of shoplifting and other issues retail workers have to face on a daily basis (and we thought business owners cared about crime!) And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma check in on the tuxedoed former Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, at a debate with the Oxford Union where he, and stop me if you've heard this before, ahistorically claims that the U.S. has NEVER asked for land during an armed conflict (wonder why they never asked)! Then, they check in on UAW president Shawn Fain, already making plans for huge labor organizing efforts in May Day of 2028, 6 months before the next presidential election and coinciding with when the UAW's next contract runs out. Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew then check in on Biden's approval ratings surrounding the economy (not good!) and what, if anything, he can do to improve on those poll numbers (maybe...run on something? Anything?) And FINALLY, courtesy of Ronald Raygun, Sam gets a very special birthday present: the opportunity to appear LIVE on Dennis Prager's show! Plus, your calls & IM's! Jim Greenbaum walked away from successful $130 million business with one mission in mind, use his wealth to change the world. Little did he know that his world was about to change as well. It all began with a conversation at the gym. Those few minutes helped this man with exceptional generosity and a tireless work ethic to help others began to realize that he too needed help. After growing up in the land of Crisco, red meat, and Coca-Cola, Jim knew he had to do something to avoid the same fate as others in his family who were stricken with heart disease. He was already struggling with high triglycerides and cholesterol. Jim was given a copy of The China Study by T. Colin Campbell and began implementing changes. It only took one month for "everything to go into total balance" for the first time in his life. The effect was so profound that Jim shifted the focus and vast resources of his foundation to moving the world toward a plant-based diet and vegan lifestyle.
