Floral designer Emily Thompson has a very different vocabulary from many florists: she creates thickets, heaps, vapors, gusts and gales, using birds, beasts, branches, trees and flora. Her creations for runway fashion shows, gala events and the White House evoke meadows, forests and fields. Fifteen years after her disruptive arrival on the floral scene, she has published a book documenting her work. Martha and Emily talk about their floral obsessions and creating unforgettable work in the most ephemeral of arts. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is this the year rent limits pass?

For years, progressives have tried to fight the rising cost of living by instituting a kind of "rent control" – what proponents call "rent stabilization." Basically, a limit on how much the landlord can raise your rent. It's a divisive issue, even in the Democratic party -- in fact for years, it was Democrats that kept killing attempts at rent limits. But this could be the year that rent stabilization actually comes to pass. The same sponsor of a failed stabilization bill last year – then-Representative, now-Senator Emily Alvarado – is taking another shot at this. Engrossed House Bill 1217 passed out of the House this week. That’s as far as earlier versions of this bill got last year -- and there’s buzz this year that the Senate could let this version of the bill safely parachute onto the Governor’s desk. To hear more about the divide around this bill, Sound Politics hosts Libby Denkmann and Scott Greenstone were joined by State Senator Emily Alvarado, the prime sponsor of HB 1217, and Emily Thompson, a partner with GMD Development, which specializes in affordable housing. Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! If you want to help out, go to kuow.org/politics. Send us a textShow goats are held to strict conformational standards, but we often overlook the fact that our own herds would benefit from those same conformational standards. Extra teats, bad legs, weak pasterns, and crooked faces may sound as though they aren't that big of a deal outside of the show ring, but those standards have practical reasoning behind them. Ultimately, they produce a strong, sound specimen that can live a long, productive life. Don't we all want that for our goats, even those that will never see a show ring?  In this episode, we're talking to Emily Thompson who has been an ADGA judge for 24 years, co-chaired several committees, served on the Linear Appraisal Committee, and raises Alpines and Toggenburgs with her family under the Kara Kahl Alpines and the Legendairy Toggenburg herd names. Emily offers clarification on breed standards in the ADGA Guidebook, the two areas that award the most points in the show ring and why, and the importance of a good mammary system. She also covers what to look for regarding good conformation when purchasing a new goat, defects that will never go away (and some surprising ones that may), as well as some serious defects that should immediately land a goat into either the non-breeding pet or freezer category.See full show notes here >> https://thriftyhomesteader.com/goat-conformation/To see the most recent episodes, visit  ForTheLoveOfGoats.comWant to support the content you love?Head over to -- https://thrifty-homesteader.ck.page/products/love-goats-tip-jarThanks for listening! No one ever said raising goats was easy, but it doesn't have to cost a fortune or drive you crazy! In 2004, Sonali Deraniyagala was on vacation with her family on the coast of Sri Lanka when a tsunami struck the South Asian island. It killed her husband, their two sons and her parents, leaving Deraniyagala alone in a reality she couldn't comprehend. In Berkeley Talks episode 201, Deraniyagala discusses her all-consuming grief in the aftermath of the tragedy and the process of writing about it in her 2013 memoir, Wave.“Wave was the wave was the wave,” said Deraniyagala, who spoke in April 2024 at an event for Art of Writing, a program of UC Berkeley's Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities. “What mattered was the loss. It could have been a tree. It just happened to be the wave. I wasn't that interested in how it happened. It was more this otherworldly situation where I had a life, I didn't have a life, and it took 10 minutes between the two.“So that I was trying to figure out, and I think the whole book Wave was trying to. Everything you know vanishes in an instant, literally in an instant, with no warning. … I experienced something that I didn't have words for. I didn't know what was happening when it was happening, which is why I was sure I was dreaming.”Deraniyagala, an economist who teaches at the University of London and Columbia University, described herself as "an accidental writer.” She said her initial goal, at the urging of her therapist, was to write for herself in attempt to make sense of a loss that "one can't write easily or put into sentences or find words for," she told Ramona Naddaff, Berkeley associate professor of rhetoric and founding director of Art of Writing, whom Deraniyagala joined in conversation for the event. But in the painstaking process of writing and rewriting, Deraniyagala found her voice. And after eight years, Wave was published. It became a New York Times bestseller and won the PEN Ackerley Prize in 2013.Listen to the episode and read the transcript on Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts).Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Photo by Emily Thompson. Discussions about the impact of generative artificial intelligence in teaching and learning are steadily moving beyond questions about whether and how students will cheat. Today's episode of The Key is drawn from a workshop expertly led by Inside Higher Ed's Colleen Flaherty at the Digital Universities U.S. conference at Washington University in St. Louis. The conversation on “Teaching with Generative AI: Benefits and Risks” featured four thoughtful experts on teaching and learning: Asim Ali, executive director of the Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at Auburn University; Trey Conatser, director of the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching at the University of Kentucky; Emily Thompson, director of online programs at Washington University's School of Medicine, and Michael Reese, associate dean at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation. You'll hear precious little discussion about cheating, but a lot of talk about the need for faculty training and support and the importance of bridging potential gaps in access and overcoming bias in the technology, among other things. The Key is hosted by Inside Higher Ed Co-founder and Editor Doug Lederman. This episode is sponsored by Mongoose.

Emily Thompson's entrepreneurial journey began at the age of 18 when she bought her first business, a tanning salon. From the moment she stepped into the role of a business owner, she knew that was where she was meant to be, and since then she has built businesses ranging from online jewelry stores to website design agencies. Today, she runs Being Boss and Almanac Supply Co., both of which feed her passions for creativity and business in different ways. Tune in to hear Emily share the story of her upbringing (which was filled with experiences rather than things), one of the biggest setbacks she has experienced as an entrepreneur (and the valuable lesson it taught her), why it is so important to be flexible with your vision, and the benefits of a “business bestie.” Entrepreneurship is about the journey; be open to all the opportunities that life presents to you, and don't forget to have fun along the way!  Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Emily Thompson on LinkedIn Almanac Supply Co. Introducing: CrimeLapse! CrimeLapse is one of my favorite podcasts and I'm lucky to count Eileen, its host, as a dear friend. You may know her from her other podcast, The Shattered Window, an investigative true crime series uncovering the unsolved murder of Jaclyn Dowaliby, co-hosted with fellow Irishwoman, Morbidology's Emily Thompson. We Saw the Devil will publish a new episode later this evening! On this episode: Just before midnight on March 18th, 2018, deputies from the Hillsborough County sheriff's officer responded to a series of 911 calls from Pike Lake Drive, in Riverview, Florida.Moments after a woman had called pleading for help as she had been shot, another call had come from the house, the male caller told the dispatcher;“Hey, I just been attacked by some white demon…inside… Was inside. Keke, Keke, her name is Keke and she tried to kill me and I just killed her stupid ass.”This is... PSA: If you haven't Googled that “cool” teacher from high school, go ahead. We'll wait.  Douglas Le had a reputation for being the cool teacher at Gilroy High School. He was young and highly educated. He could relate to his students! He told hilarious, edgy jokes! He joked about the size of his students' genitals. He joked about having sex with their moms. In the fall of 2014, one mother alerted the school district to Douglas Le's behavior. They didn't listen.  Then Brandi tells us a very on-brand story. It was September 2, 2003. Sarah Johnson ran to a neighbor's house in a panic. Her parents, Diane and Alan Scott Johnson were dead in their bedroom. When investigators arrived on the scene, they got there just in time to stop a garbage truck from taking evidence from the crime scene. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: The Web of Lies episode “The Enemy Within” “Ex-Campbell teacher who catfished students arrested again on teen sex allegations,” by Robert Salonga for the Mercury News “Gilroy sex offender teacher set free,” by Jack Foley for the Gilroy Dispatch “At school, he was the ‘cool' teacher. Online, police say, he was a student-seducing porn star,” by Peter Holley for the Washington Post In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Disrobed” episode Forensic Files “Love Interrupted- Diane and Alan Johnson Murders” episode 20/20 “Couple's killer wore bathrobe backwards, says” by Patti Murphy, The Times-News “Conflicting evidence brought at Johnson Trial” Associated Press, South Idaho Press “Family gets day in court” by Patti Murphy, The Times-News “Bellevue, Idaho” wikipedia.org “Teen Charged With Parents' Gruesome Murder” by Elizabeth R. Grodd and Jeffrey L Diamond, ABC News “The Johnson Family Murders” by Emily Thompson, Morbidology “Sarah Marie Johnson” murderpedia.org “Sarah Marie Johnson v. State of Idaho” findlaw.com YOU'RE STILL READING? My, my, my, you skeezy scunch! You must be hungry for more! We'd offer you some sausage brunch, but that gets messy.
