A casual podcast to listen to when you want to hang out with a friend (me) and many others! Topics range from LGBTQ topics, Asian American perspectives, being a woman in STEM, and more! Hope y’all enjoy :)
In this episode one of my good friends, Laura Gao, and I are talking about her journey into being a writer, our gender identity, and sexuality. We both identify as queer with pronouns she/they, and share about how we've come to these identities :) Laura is a queer comic artist and has published a book, "Messy Roots" (https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/55867756-messy-roots). She's been interviewed by NPR and many others which is freakin CRAZY. Ty Laura for hanging out with me and ty to everyone for taking the time to listen
In this episode Harrison and I talked about his experience as a cis bisexual male. We talk about how bisexual men are often judged for not sticking with one “side”. We also briefly discuss how it feels for a male to express emotion in other male dominated spaces.
My AMAZING friend Hannah Wastyk has joined me on this episode to share about her journey on completing her PhD to becoming the CEO of her startup in the bay! She'll share more about her research which is demonstrates the connection between the gut microbiome and the immune system. She is the FIRST paper to prove this relationship in a human study!! We also talk about the importance of representation and how it is so empowering to see others like us killin it. Thank you so much for hanging out and sharing your story Hannah! I am so grateful :) Check out her website to learn more about her: https://hannahwastyk.co/ Check out her paper to learn more about the microbiome: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34256014/ Her freakin awesome defense (I cried at the end): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgExv0seNCY&t=3138s&ab_channel=HannahWastyk
In this episode my friend Vy Luu is joining me in talking about our love for therapy!! Being open about mental health is tough, especially in Asian communities. We share about how we came about starting therapy, and some insights we've gained in this journey :) There are also so fun tangents with Asian American authors, and extending care throughout communities. This was so fun for me and eye opening for me, thank you Vy!
It's National Eating Disorder Awareness Week! I had an eating disorder throughout my time in college and I wanted to bring awareness to the condition as well as provide some sort of comfort for those going through it right now. Here are the websites I was referring to in the video: https://now.org/now-foundation/love-your-body/love-your-body-whats-it-all-about/get-the-facts/#:~:text=Body%20Image,the%20time%20girls%20reach%20seventeen.&text=When%20asked%20%E2%80%9CAre%20you%20happy,their%2060s%20answered%20%E2%80%9Cyes%E2%80%9D. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/common-eating-disorders#binge-eating-disorder Stephanie Buttermore's All In Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9z5xqAP7ek This was EXTREMELY helpful for me. Thanks for listening :)
(I’m bad at titles) My friend Elli, the founder of the Queer Climbing Collective (QCC), took the time to chat about this group and how she came about making it! We also talk about: - The queer community in climbing - The different types of climbing - Our favorite types of climbs This episode is short and sweet, and I thought it would be cool to share with you all places that I find community and comfort with other queer people :) Check QCC out! Instagram is @queerclimbingcollective :)
In this episode I'm talking with one of my best buds, Glaiza, about our experience in figuring out our sexuality. Surprise, we're both lesbians! Both of us are Asian American women, and navigating through our sexuality while also battling conflicting standards between Eastern and Western cultures is a long, never ending process. Not only are we talking about our journey, but we are also discussing the word "Lesbian" and what it means to us, as well as how society has portrayed it. I definitely learned a lot, and hanging out with Glaiza helps me feel more comfortable in my own skin! To all my queer asian women out there, we are with you :). And thank you also to everyone else that has taken the time to listen and learn about other communities in this world
Even though 2020 sucked, I learned a lot, and I’m grateful that I was able to learn a lot about myself through these hard times. I’m really optimistic about 2021 (kind of) and hope y’all have a safe new year!
In this episode my girlfriend and I are chatting about our experiences in engineering! Both of us are Mechanical Engineers so this episode will focus mainly on that, but I hope to chat with many other ladies in different engineering fields and share with y’all :) I’m also going to try to chat with ladies in all different fields as well!! I hope you all are doing well, we finally made it to the end of 2020!
Joey is back!! And in this episode we’re sharing our thoughts and experiences in grad school. What was fun about this episode is we are studying very different subjects which lead to very different feelings/experiences LOL. Definitely a ramble type episode! Hope y’all enjoy and happy holidays! :)
My first solo episode! Disclaimer: It is very unedited and unfiltered. In this episode I’m trying to raise awareness about Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD). It affects roughly 1% of the population and it is a chronic autoimmune disease. Navigating through this diagnosis has been tough for me, but also rewarding at the same time. I wanted to share my experiences with y’all and just some thoughts/reflections. Here are some links for more information about the disease: https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/ https://www.cdc.gov/ibd/index.htm Here are some really cute stickers!! LOL : https://giphy.com/CrohnsColitisFoundation If you have any topics you want me to talk about or just leave any love you can do it here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1XyniXWIyfopjGhp-gbcAIJQSo72UAXL-n7Rig2yywbM/viewform?edit_requested=true Thank you!!
In this episode, Kristine and I talk about specifically how we felt growing up in a traditional Vietnamese household. I didn’t want to generalize and say that it’s the same for all Asian households, but maybe there are similarities! It’s taxing trying to balance what will make your family happy and what will make you happy. I don’t know if any solutions are in this episode BUT I hope it provides some comfort to y’all that if you feel this way, you are not alone!
In this episode I'm talking with my friend Megan! She was born in a small town in Missouri with a population of 700 people. It was super interesting to learn more about her upbringing and to show that the US consists of so many people with such different backgrounds. During these times the country feels so divided (fuck Trump) but I think its important to understand why some people think the way they do. In the end we're all people just trying to make our way through life and we should learn to be compassionate and loving towards each other no matter the circumstance. I knowwww, super corny. Thank you to Megan for hanging out with me and thank you to everyone for listening! Talk to y’all soon
How you identify as a person is important! In this episode Joey and I are talking about the Genderbread Person. It is a great resource for those in questioning of their gender identity and sexuality, and for anyone that wants to learn more about some topics discussed in the LGBTQ community (but really should be talked about everywhere). As a disclaimer this is a VERY basic introduction to the concept of Gender and Sexuality: It is not in any way thorough, but it was personally really helpful to go through the Genderbread Person and be able to break down jumbled thoughts I had in my own head. Hopefully this was helpful/insightful to y'all :) Link to Genderbread Person: https://www.genderbread.org/ If you want to give any comments/feedback/love a form is here: https://forms.gle/g971DLzhZgg3oySL7
In this episode we’re hanging out with Allison! She was your “classic” asian growing up, intending to follow the stem path as most of us do, but now she’s pursuing entertainment! I admire her for embracing this unfamiliar path (for me), and I’m so happy I was able to catch up with her. She’s sharing with us her journey getting into hollywood and youtube! Her IG: allison.yellow and check her videos at youtube.com/AllisonYellow. Enjoy! If you want to give any comments/feedback/love a form is here: https://forms.gle/g971DLzhZgg3oySL7
TLDR I’m a queer asian woman in stem that wants to talk about a range of things from sexuality, to being asian american, to random stuff that pops up in my head! My goal is for anyone to find community and inclusivity within this podcast :) If you want to give any comments/feedback/love a form is here: https://forms.gle/g971DLzhZgg3oySL7
Hey y’all, this was my first recording and I’m really adamant with sticking to it! I wanted to record again but then felt like I would just record over and over again. So welcome!
