Donald Trump is furious at Pope Leo. After the Pope sharply criticized the war on Iran, Trump exploded in a wild Truth Social rant, slamming the Pope as “WEAK on crime” and clueless about the Iranian nuclear threat. Trump then posted an image of himself as Jesus, which he took down after MAGA figures lashed out at him. Trump then angrily insisted he had no idea that image was religious, and seethed some more over the Pope's criticism. In today's episode, Robert Jones, the president of the Public Religion Research Institute, makes a fascinating point: The Pope's criticism of his war appears calibrated in a way that could stir concern about his war in local churches at a grassroots level. That's a hidden problem for Trump, says Jones, author of several books about religion and the American right. Il s'agit encore d'un résultat provisoire, mais le chiffre est sans appel : le tandem formé par Romuald Wadagni et Mariam Chabi Talata arrive largement en tête du scrutin, avec un peu plus de 94% des voix. Et un peu moins de 6% pour le duo Paul Hounkpè et Rock Judicaël Hounwanou. Wadagni et Talata seront donc les prochains président et vice-président du Bénin. Un peu plus de 90% des bulletins ont été dépouillés : la « tendance est donc irréversible », pointe La Nouvelle Tribune à Cotonou. D'ailleurs, le candidat de l'opposition, Paul Hounkpè, n'a pas tardé à reconnaître sa défaite et à féliciter Romuald Wadagani, relève pour sa part le site d'information Banouto. Un opposant de façade ? Ce qui fait dire à WakatSéra à Ouagadougou que cette « réaction extrêmement rapide de Paul Hounkpè » est quelque peu suspecte… Une réaction qui « pourrait bien apporter de l'eau au moulin de ses détracteurs et même d'observateurs avertis de la politique béninoise qui le caricaturaient comme un simple accompagnant du dauphin du président sortant, Patrice Talon. L'opposant modéré aura donc joué sa partition jusqu'au bout en acceptant d'éviter au Bénin, le schéma pas du tout crédible du candidat unique à cette présidentielle ». Et WakatSéra de s'interroger : « où sont donc passés Les Démocrates de la démocratie béninoise ? Les Démocrates, le véritable parti d'opposition qui pouvait perturber les plans du pouvoir, a été écartelé et écarté du jeu politique, depuis bien longtemps et de bout en bout ».  L'opposition absente… En effet, précise Afrik.com, « cette présidentielle 2026 s'est déroulée dans un contexte politique singulier. Le Président Patrice Talon, arrivé au terme de ses deux mandats constitutionnels, devait passer la main après dix années au pouvoir marquées par une forte croissance économique mais aussi par des critiques sur le recul des libertés publiques ». Et « le principal parti d'opposition, Les Démocrates, était (donc) absent du scrutin, faute d'avoir obtenu suffisamment de parrainages d'élus, une situation qui avait alimenté les débats sur l'ouverture démocratique du système politique béninois. Paul Hounkpè lui-même avait obtenu les parrainages nécessaires grâce à des élus proches de la majorité, ce qui avait contribué à une campagne relativement calme et peu conflictuelle ». Du pain sur la planche Alors, Romuald Wadagni va désormais se mettre au travail…  « Ce libéral au profil de golden boy, (qui a accompagné Patrice Talon au poste de ministre de l'Économie depuis 10 ans), sera très attendu dans le domaine social, pointe Le Monde Afrique. Si la réussite économique de Patrice Talon – et donc en partie la sienne – est globalement reconnue, nombre de Béninois des couches populaires, loin du centre-ville clinquant de Cotonou, regrettent de ne pas voir les retombées de la croissance et de devoir se démener au quotidien face à la cherté de la vie. Parmi ses promesses de campagne figurent, entre autres, une généralisation du système de protection sociale et une meilleure distribution des aides. Autre défi majeur, relève encore Le Monde Afrique : endiguer la menace des groupes djihadistes sahéliens qui mènent des incursions régulières et meurtrières dans le nord du pays depuis les Burkina Faso et Niger voisins. Une lutte d'autant plus délicate que le Bénin entretient des relations exécrables avec les juntes au pouvoir dans ces deux pays ». La visite du Pape en Algérie marquée par un double-attentat À la Une également, « la visite du pape en Algérie bousculée par un attentat », s'exclame Jeune Afrique. Et même un double attentat kamikaze qui a eu lieu hier dans le centre-ville de Blida, à 50 km au sud d'Alger. « Les deux déflagrations sont survenues quasiment au moment où Léon XIV prononçait son discours à la Grande mosquée d'Alger. C'est le premier attentat de ce genre sur le territoire algérien depuis 2012 », pointe le site panafricain. « Dans les heures qui ont suivi, les autorités algériennes ont imposé un black-out total de l'information sur cet événement », relève Le Monde Afrique. Pas un mot dans la presse algérienne.  Commentaire du journal : ce double-attentat « est venu percuter, par un contre-exemple sanglant, l'appel à la réconciliation et à l'apaisement que le souverain pontife est venu partager avec le peuple algérien ». D'après une source diplomatique française, poursuit Le Monde Afrique, le lien est « absolument certain entre la survenance de ces actes et l'actuelle visite du pape en Algérie. Les terroristes ont voulu punir l'Algérie d'avoir accueilli le chef des mécréants. C'est aussi un message adressé au président Tebboune, qui a l'impudence d'accueillir le pape en terre d'Islam ».
