Songkran is a festival from Southeast Asia marking the new year and celebrating making a fresh start. This special program includes a program discussion hosted by Michelle Meow featuring conversations on cultural heritage, community impact, and empowerment initiatives; cultural performances, including traditional dances, live music, and storytelling sessions; a traditional water blessing ceremony; and delicious authentic Southeast Asian cuisine prepared by local chefs. About the Speakers Kesinee Angkustsiri Yip has been helping companies, organizations, and executives manage their reputations for more than two decades. An award-winning communications strategist recognized by the International Association of Business Communications, she co- founded Creative Catalyst (www.creativecatalystworks.com) to address culture and connection challenges—the things AI does not—by bringing improv into the workplace. While improv can be funny, it's not just for the theater. Improv techniques can help entrepreneurs and leaders as well as customer-facing, sales, HR, and DEI teams reduce anxiety, cultivate safe spaces, and encourage creativity. Her book, “Yes, and...” for Success: Improv Secrets to Supercharge Professional Creativity and Connection is out on Amazon and available at Bay Area bookstores. Kesinee has performed at BATS Improv and has led workshops and trainings in the United States and abroad. Kesinee is on the Board of the Asian Women's Shelter in San Francisco (www.sfaws.org) and is active with the LEAD-LISA Startup Incubator (www.gsb-lead-lisa.com). She earned a BA from Stanford University and an MBA in Marketing and Strategic Planning from Rice University. Maly Phommavong is based in Sacramento and has been in the interpreting field since 2015. In 1987, she arrived in the United States at age 13 as a child of refugees with a family of 12. She graduated with a Master's Degree in Criminology from CSU of Fresno in 2000, and worked as a deputy probation officer for Contra Costa County in 2002. She retired early from the Probation Department in 2015, and began working as a registered court interpreter for the California Judicial Court. Maly has been involved in grass-roots advocacy and volunteered in nonprofit organizations for decades. In 2015, She began her online presence through conducting live community discussions covering various issues affecting the community in the Lao language catering to non-English speaking members. Her videos have reached the Laotian audience worldwide. Kenya Prach is a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide who escaped to Thailand refugee camps before finding a second chance in the United States. Arriving with no knowledge of English and few opportunities, Kenya faced immense challenges, from being unable to attend high school or community college to being turned away from work. However, a kind gesture from an African American homeless man helped guide him toward education and a new life. A Cambodian-born martial artist, Kenya is known for his expertise in Kbach-Kun-Boran-Khmer (Bokator) and Muay Thai kickboxing. Despite enduring the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime, he pursued martial arts in Thailand and later excelled in boxing in the United States. With a deep understanding of hardship and compassion, Kenya has dedicated his life to helping others, particularly in the fight against human trafficking and advocating for human rights. He believes that true wealth lies not in material possessions but in kindness, care and love. Through his work and his book Black Stone Hands, Kenya seeks to give a voice to the voiceless and inspire others to make a difference by uplifting those in need. Sense of Self invites listeners to reflect on their own self-narratives and explore the forces that shape their identities. Through these conversations, we hope to inspire listeners to embrace their true selves, question the stories they tell themselves, and embark on their own journeys of self-discovery.A note from our host Dr. Gowri Aragam:I had the privilege of exploring the stories of women of color who have rewritten the scripts they were given. In each episode, we delved into their journeys of self-discovery, discussing the defining moments, relationships, and pressures that shaped them. These women shared their experiences of feeling disconnected from their self-narratives and the process of reclaiming their identities. In their stories, we hear about finding strength in adversity, rediscovering one's voice, and embracing authenticity, and the importance of inner security and self-acceptance. Ultimately I hope that Sense of Self can be a platform for listeners to reflect on their own narratives and explore the stories that shape who they are. Thanks for being here. A note on ethics, process, and safety: The individuals in this podcast have graciously shared their stories and it's important to note that while these discussions are enriching and enlightening, they are not a substitute for therapy or mental healthcare. Please note that each guest has given their consent to participate, had full control over what aspects of their journey were shared, and either currently engages in therapy or has done so in the past. Thanks from all of us at Sense of Self and The Mission Entertainment.

Too often, we inherit limiting beliefs and behaviors that hold us back, and I really saw my own experiences reflected in those pages. These barriers of self-confidence, imposter syndrome, trauma — these are universal challenges, and I think it's so valuable that more people are openly talking about their experiences overcoming these roadblocks because, as Sheena shares in this episode, it's so much harder for us to do that without community, without stories to fuel us with inspiration. So I hope you are inspired by Sheena's story, and I'm thrilled that I can support her on her mission to help Asian Women live their authentic selves and create a stronger voice in the world.Resources:Learn more at https://www.sheenayapchan.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sheenayapchan/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sheena.yap.chan/

I've been spending the last year(s) and especially the last six months really focusing on my health in all the ways: mentally, emotionally, physically. I also started a dream job four months ago, so I could not be more grateful for where I am and who I am surrounded by. I wanted to share these parts of my journey, and not just the “Happily Ever After, Here's How I Overcame, I'm an Asian Hustler” ending - because in life, the real ending is … death! Haha. I will continue to feature guests, but now and again I'm considering  sharing my unfiltered ramblings since they require a lot less editing. And even though he loves girls who are "shiksalicious," meaning fake tits, big vacant eyes, and super blonde hair with a crucifix hanging in their cleavage, our entire conversation was spent with him trying to figure out whether he wanted to fuck me, or kill me maybe both at the same time who knows. In this episode we interview Professor Elisabeth B. Armstrong. Armstrong is a professor of the Study of Women and Gender at Smith College. She teaches courses on feminist political praxis, with a focus on transnational feminist movements seeking social, economic and environmental transformation. Her courses include Marxist feminism, Women, Money and Transnationalism, decolonial feminist archives and gendered movements about the land, food and survival. Many of her courses are community-based research courses linked to regional and international community movements for the basic needs of land, food, labor, and embodied self-determination. In addition to the book we discuss in this episode Armstrong is the author of The Retreat From Organization: U.S. Feminism Reconceptualized, and Gender and Neoliberalism: The All-India Democratic Women's Association and Its Strategies of Resistance. In this conversation we are here to talk about her latest book Bury The Corpse of Colonialism: The Revolutionary Feminist Conference of 1949. In 1949, revolutionary activists from Asia hosted a conference in Beijing that gathered together their comrades from around the world. The Asian Women's Conference developed a new political strategy, demanding that women from occupying colonial nations contest imperialism with the same dedication as women whose countries were occupied. This book tells the remarkable story of how these bold activists constructed a blueprint for anti-imperialist feminist internationalism and shows how movements create a revolutionary theory over time and through struggle. The book is a great discussion of conjunctural analysis, the dedication of these women militants, from communist parties and other antifascist, anticolonial, and anti-imperialist formations in the 1940's. We talk to Dr. Armstrong about how these women developed their strategy, what they were experiencing in their struggles, and how they sought to put their strategy of an inside/outside approach to anti colonialism and anti-imperialism into practice in the middle of the 20th century as the international anticolonial movement was developing. Annie joins Elisabeth Armstrong, author of Bury the Corpse of Colonialism: The Revolutionary Feminist Conference of 1949 for a discussion of the Beijing conference and the international women's movement of the period. They discuss the composition and politics of the Women's International Democratic Federation, the key figures in the WIDF who played a role in the Asian Women's Conference, the different rhetorical strategies formulated through the conference, including revolutionary motherhood and women's anti-colonialism, as well as the political and interpersonal dynamics between women in the WIDF from the imperial core and women from colonized countries. They then discuss the place of the conference in the broader communist movement, the role of state repression, and how the terrain of feminist politics has changed since the peak of the WIDF, drawing lessons for contemporary feminist and socialist movements.

In 1949, women from across the world traveled to Beijing for the Asian Women's Conference to discuss how to combat the dual threats of colonial rule and a new post-war global imperialism. These activists developed a groundbreaking political strategy, which assigned different roles to women living in colonial nations and those still colonized, arguing that both had a part to place in creating a more just global peace.  In Bury the Corpse of Colonialism: The Revolutionary Feminist Conference of 1949 (University of California Press, 2023), Elisabeth Armstrong looks more closely at the lives of the women who attended the conference. Their backgrounds in anticolonial struggles helped shape the work of the umbrella organization—the Women's International Democratic Federation—that supported the convening. The book profiles a range of women from Indonesia, Vietnam, the United States, France, India, Iraq, and China among others, who had been involved in armed revolution, antifascist resistance, and leftist party politics worldwide. In the preparations and travel that led to the conference they butted heads, but also built lasting friendships with each other through their activism. Their collective efforts helped create a framework for internationalist solidarity for women's emancipation in a world structured through militarism, capitalism, patriarchy, and the seeming impossibility of justice. In 1949, women from across the world traveled to Beijing for the Asian Women's Conference to discuss how to combat the dual threats of colonial rule and a new post-war global imperialism. This week's episode is less of an interview and more of an intimate chat between KJ and her friend Lilian Wee. Moving away from home and relocating to a new place of residence thousands of miles away can be extremely challenging and lonely. Adjusting to a new culture, falling in love, and navigating relationships all in the middle of a world health crisis? This could be the breaking point for some folks, but not for Lilian. Leaving her home in Singapore to live and work in Houston, Texas (while in the offshore energy & shipping industry!) became the invitation for Lil (as her friends know her) to step into her resiliency and create a community for other immigrants, nomads, and transplants to connect on themes of finding roots and "home" from wherever they are in the world. Compassionate considerations:⭐ Choose relationships that help you create a sanctuary or home. ⭐ Asking for support via therapy is a form of self-compassion and advocacy and can be done without shame⭐ COVID practically force-clarified how people defined home: connectivity, community, safety⭐ Assess whether you're embracing or isolating⭐ Self-care & resiliency practices = committing to time with self in nature, with beloved animals, meditation, breathing and yoga, and a nap! ⭐ Self-care is intentional and attainable Please Rate and Review This Podcast if the stories shared here have astonished you as well. https://ratethispodcast.com/astonishingstories Connect With LilianLinktr.ee:  resilient_and_rooted IG: @heartopenconvers_asians Pod: Heart Open Convers_asians Connect With KJ & Bliss Begins Within Join KJ & Norman in Bali and Lombok, Indonesia to recover your creative design.  Next Retreat: May 30 - June 5, 2023IG:  @MusingsOnOther Web: https://blissbeginswithin.com  Book A Hello Call with KJ:  https://blissbeginswithin.as.me/HelloCallReceive alerts for upcoming Creativity & Healing Gatherings - Newsletter Episode Background Music: Composed & Performed by KJ Nasrul Intro & Outro Music: Canada Lo Res by Pictures Of The Floating World Support the showFollow KJ in her worldly adventures, and receive notifications when her next events (Creative Recovery Workshops, Bali Wellness Retreats, and Storyteller Evenings) take place.- Join The Story Squad and receive Love Notes Here- Visit here: Bliss Begins Within.com
