Taboo to Truth: Unapologetic Conversations About Sexuality in Midlife
In this episode, I delve into the complex world of gender and sexuality, acknowledging the vast array of terminology that exists today compared to the simpler times of my youth. I explore the distinctions between identity, expression, gender, and sexual orientation, emphasizing that these aspects of ourselves are not always aligned. I introduce concepts such as the Genderbread Person to illustrate the differences between sex, gender expression, sexual attraction, and identity. I also share insights on how societal norms have evolved to recognize not only the binary of male and female but also the spectrum that includes intersex, transgender, and non-binary identities, highlighting the importance of understanding and respecting each individual's unique experience. I hope to open minds and foster a deeper understanding of the fluidity and diversity within human sexuality and gender identity. I acknowledge that this episode merely scratches the surface of a vast topic and that language and labels continue to evolve. I aim to promote empathy and inclusivity, inviting listeners to embrace the complexity of human identity with an open heart and mind. ************************************************************* Have a burning question or topic suggestion? karen@taboototruth.com https://www.taboototruth.com/ https://www.instagram.com/taboototruth https://www.youtube.com/@taboototruthpodcast *this podcast is not intended to give medical advice. On today's episode of Creedal, I'm joined by Dr. Abigail Favale of the University of Notre Dame. Abigail shares her intellectual journey from exvangelical feminist scholar to faithful daughter of the Church, and shares a helpful summary of the intellectual history of feminism that brought us to the radical conclusions of today's gender identity ideology. Along the way, she highlights some of the philosophical tensions and inconsistencies of modern gender theory, painting a far more beautiful picture of human sexuality that is grounded in God's love for each one of us. Dr. Favale's book, The Genesis of Gender, is available wherever books are sold, I cannot recommend it highly enough! It's a been a long summer without you, dear Scorekeepers, but we're finally back with a new episode of THE SCORE! This week, we start with a conversation about what did on our summer vacations (0:00:53) before we have a chat about gender identity and transphobia in opera education, sparked by some brutal comments leaked from an Opera America listserv earlier this summer (0:29:06). We're then joined by MN Opera's brand new Youth Programs Music Director, Rick Hoops, who gives us some insight into our new educational offerings this fall and what they're doing to "de-gender" opera education and make opera a more inclusive art form for young artists (0:55:25). And, finally, despite the state of the world there is plenty of Black joy to be found! This week we celebrate the ladies of Abbot Elementary, Alexis Nikole Nelson, Mishael Morgan, Emilia Mettenbrink and you know you're not getting out of here without listening to us meltdown over Beyoncé's latest masterpiece, Renaissance (1:15:24)!
How you identify as a person is important! In this episode Joey and I are talking about the Genderbread Person. It is a great resource for those in questioning of their gender identity and sexuality, and for anyone that wants to learn more about some topics discussed in the LGBTQ community (but really should be talked about everywhere). As a disclaimer this is a VERY basic introduction to the concept of Gender and Sexuality: It is not in any way thorough, but it was personally really helpful to go through the Genderbread Person and be able to break down jumbled thoughts I had in my own head. Hopefully this was helpful/insightful to y'all :) Link to Genderbread Person: https://www.genderbread.org/ If you want to give any comments/feedback/love a form is here: https://forms.gle/g971DLzhZgg3oySL7

How would you define your gender identity? Do you think a genderless future is possible? Gender identity refers to how we experience our own gender, whether shown through labels and pronouns, your appearance, or how you act and dress. Despite what we’ve previously been taught, the possibilities are wide when it comes to gender, and today, we’ll discuss some of the questions that may have come up when you first heard about gender identity or if you are still working to figure out your own. Join Sophie in her conversation with Aydian Dowling, Julian Van Horne, and Dara Hoffman-Fox. Want to learn more about our guests and the amazing work they're doing? Read below! Aydian Dowling (he/him) is a transgender rights activist and new father who is on a mission to redefine masculinity. He is the Co-Founder and President of Point of Pride, a non-profit organization that serves the transgender community worldwide. Aydian has documented his transition on social media and he received national attention when he was became first ever transgender man featured on the front page of a mainstream publication. Today, Aydian understands the struggles associated with body image and gender identity and is utilizing his platform to be a voice and advocate for the trans community in his ongoing journey. Be sure to subscribe to his YouTube channel and follow him on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to keep up with all of his latest projects. Julian Van Horne (he/him) is a life coach, model, and entrepreneur who’s work centers around advocacy for the disabled, trans, and LGBTQ+ communities. In this episode, I am joined by Danie Crofoot of Full Spectrum Doulas, an organization dedicated to creating dialogue around topics such as LGBTQIA+ inclusion, cultural competency, racial issues, and much more within the birth community. Danie is a childbirth educator and sex educator, and is known as a “traveling doula” - splitting time mostly between Los Angeles and New York. Danie and I discuss a number of issues relating to queer and trans parents, including the evidence on trans people, hormones and pregnancy, trans masculine people and pregnancy, mis-gendering, hospital logistics, and how the academic world can build a more rubust body of research on topics relating to LGBTQIA+. In May our adult Sunday School focused on beginning to understand our calling to hospitality to trans folks in our community. Starting with learning some basics about gender identity and expression using the Genderbread Person and some terms and definitions from BMC's Trans 101 resource, we turned the second half of the class over to Avery Kanode, who was gracious and generous enough to share from his own experience of realizing that he was transgender.

Something to get you thinking today. I'm talking to Dr Madeline Fernbach, Australian Clinical Psychologist with expertise and a passion for working with the transgender and gender fluid community.Madeline is fascinated by identity and the way people see themselves. She explains in this episode that during her awkward middle teenage years she drifted at the fringes of many social groups. Without a fixed groups of friend until later in her life she developed an interest in what makes humans belong - or not belong - in groups. This is interest drove her to complete a PhD on the topic, after which she began work at the Australian Research Centre for Sex, Health And Society at Latrobe University. Throughout her career she has been involved in sexual health and identity research, and in the last five years these interests have coalesced, leading her to specialise in supporting the transgender community. She says, 'The best part of my job is talking about identity and providing support so that people can take control of their lives in ways that are consistent with who they are.'In this episode Madeline and I discuss:What identity is and how it relates to gender.Social identity theory and the sense of self we get from the groups we belong to.The importance of authenticity for our wellbeing. How our mental health is affected when there is a gap between our public and private selves. The Genderbread Person. What is it and how does it help us to understand the many facets of gender? The fascinating, complex nature of gender and how we express it.Madeline's tips for individuals and families grappling with gender and identity. This is a really thoughtful, insightful and frank interview that might get you thinking about your identity, your personal and public personas and what it means to you to live a truly authentic life.
Ep. 6 Guest Emanuel Dubbeldam graciously joins us this episode to help answer some possible questions you, and myself, have about transgender terminology, experiences, and common misconceptions regarding our understanding of the "spectrum-ception" that is 'Transgender'. We talk about the subtly of gender neutral language, a nifty "Genderbread Person", and we solve sexism and transphobia all in one conversation! In all seriousness though, we truly hope to have helped even one person find the words to describe themselves or others in a respectful & accurate manner. August 09, 2017 Discussion on the Genderbread Person, calls from listeners by Dr. Farid Holakouee
Nicoletta and Simone talk about all things queerness with their friend Ava. Included: a fisting how-to! ‘I came out as bi at Thanksgiving. I screamed it out during dinner.” this has great definitions of trans*/cissexism, and a non binary - and some other stuff we spoke about on the podcast http://queerdictionary.blogspot.fr/ For folks interested in what it means to identify as femme when in the queer community, this is an amazing article about Femme identity. great article about fisting/international fisting day Ava finds when providing definitions on queer/transgender/non binary identities is good to provide two or more, that way someone who is learning for the first time as two resources, and if one definition falls short another can pick back up. So enjoy! http://www.transstudent.org/definitions Do your homework! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3382736/ the Genderbread Person: http://tinypic.com/r/fxurtz/9 FOLLOW US Twitter Instagram Facebook Send questions, comments, stories, rants to: SlutsAndScholars@gmail.com Sluts And Scholars is a production of sluts and scholars media.
Dr Kofi wants to have some REAL TALK about butches, studs, AGs, doms, and Masculine-Identified Lesbians who also identify as Black in America. Let’s all talk about these identities in depth and spread some understanding about the perspectives and life experiences of Black lesbians whose gender variance is on the masculine-of-center side of the spectrum. Seems that whenever same gender loving women get together in the Black community, the topic of studs and femmes come up. So this time, it’s going to be a different conversation, a new discussion. It’ll be somewhat informational but it should be fun too. It will be to your advantage to have a visual aid as you’re listening to the show. It’s easy to download off the internet. Go to itspronouncedmeterosexual.com and find the diagram called The Genderbread Person. Do it now so you can have a copy of it during our discussion. Do your homework because show day is Wednesday, April 30th and time is 10:30 eastern, 9:30 central, 8:30 mountain, and 7:30 pacific times. The call in number is 347-215-8985 and Press 1 to TALK.
