Dr. Attia is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. Formerly the director of the inpatient eating disorders program at The New York State Psychiatric Institute, Dr.  Attia has more recently focused on research involving the psychobiology and treatment of anorexia nervosa. Since 1999, she has received uninterrupted funding for her research from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Dr. Attia is a member of the eating disorders work-group for DSM-5. Today we're going to talk about what to do if there's a part of your body that you hate–that you want to change or maybe even are obsessing over changing. In particular, we're going to talk about hating our stomachs. But you can take today's content and apply it to any body part that bothers you. Heather shares how she tried to research and figure out what culture's advice is for those who hate their stomachs. In short: the answer is always to change it. It's as if your stomach is a broken pipe in your kitchen that you can fix by following these "3 easy steps." It's as if your stomach is completely "fixable," and if your stomach doesn't look flat, then you need to do something to change that. Heather offers three things to remember in today's show: Remember your God is not your stomach. Remember your season. Remember reality. In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, today I'm tackling the data on Eating Disorders. **Trigger Warning**This is a weighty and emotional topic. If you're recovering from an ED or have been diagnosed already, you may want to just skip this episode in case you find it triggering. My purpose today is to expose the many symptoms of eating disorders and alert you to the reality that some of what we consider "normal" in our health culture is actually disordered eating or eating disorder behavior. Almost 30 million Americans have or will have an eating disorder sometime during their lifetime. Many eating disorders go undetected and only 6% of people with eating disorders are underweight. Dieting and restriction are not the pathways to health. In fact, the data shows the opposite. Dieting and food or food group restriction is ineffective at best and could lead to the dangers of disordered eating. Improving your body image doesn't mean you disregard your physical health or ignore the signals when the foods you eat make you feel bad. But food avoidance, food fear, and calorie restriction have consequences that we should all be aware of. Candidly, I would have told you a few years ago there was nothing "unhealthy" about dieting and restricting. I believed this was the only way to have a healthier body. But, now I've learned that this thinking is the same as that which accompanies disordered eating and the mental illness of eating disorder. Yes, it's a mental illness. I think it's time we stop encouraging people to develop a mental illness so their bodies can meet a cultural standard. Here's where we go in today's episode: We talk about how EDNOS--the category Heather used to associate with--is no longer a category and why. The fine line between eliminating foods for other health reasons and triggering an eating disorder. How dieting can lead to eating disorders. This week we bring you a special NEDA episode in honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, featuring Hannah Frazee, a former NCAA distance runner who shares her honest and transparent story of her eating disorder, seeking treatment and the process towards recovery. Bio: Hannah began her love of running at ten years old and admits that it was love at first run, or post race party. She participated in cross country and track in middle school and high school and was offered a scholarship to run at the University of Northern Iowa. Hannah ran cross country during the start of her freshman year; however after treatment for eating disorder, came to the realization that it would be best for her to pursue other fitness opportunities. Hannah still runs for fun, and has begun to find the fun in running again without having the pressure of running at the Division 1 level. Questions we ask Hannah include: How did you get your start in running? What was your running experience like in middle and high school? Would you mind telling us about your transition into collegiate running? You wrote a very honest piece for SRC titled, “55 Rules that were Meant to be Broken.” What was your inspiration behind writing this piece? Based on this feature, it seems as though running and your eating disorder consumed you life. How did you know it was time to seek help? You have been working though recovery at the Victory Program. Episode 4: How To Tell If You Have an Eating Disorder and What To Do About It In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, #NEDAwareness, we review basic information about eating disorders, resources that are available through NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association), and how to get more info or help. In this episode, we’ll explore: • The different types of eating disorders • Disordered eating • Subtle signs that you might have disordered eating or an eating disorder • How to get help if you have questions or concerns • When exercise becomes unhealthy • How to take the next steps • Empowering yourself through information and treatment If after reading any of this you have concerns, doubts, or questions, talk with a treatment professional immediately. Here’s how to get connected with the help you need: 1. Use NEDA resources. NEDA is the National Eating Disorders Association. Their website, www.nationaleatingdisorders.org, is packed with resources for people who have eating disorders, as well as their friends, families, and other loved ones. NEDA also has a national provider directory, a list of eating disorder specialists including therapists, psychiatrists, dietitians, and treatment centers. One of the coolest things NEDA offers is a FREE, anonymous online eating disorder screening questionnaire. NEDA has a free hotline to call with questions 1-800-931-2237. Cooler still is NEDA’s online live chat feature on their website, in case you’re more of a typer than talker. NEDA staff can answer questions and help steer you in the right direction. 2. Contact your local eating disorder treatment center. Most eating disorder treatment centers offer free consultation/initial appointments/intake sessions. During this time, you’ll meet with a clinician who can provide you with a recommendation on what type of therapy you might need. If you only need once weekly therapy from a therapist in the community, not their center, they will provide you with a referral. 3. Contact a therapist in the community to begin individual therapy. Most therapists in private practice offer free initial consultation appointments much like eating disorder treatment centers do. If the therapist determines that you would benefit from once or twice weekly therapy sessions, called outpatient therapy, you can meet with them. If they think you may need more than once or twice weekly sessions or additional services such as nutrition therapy with a dietitian, they can provide you with a referral as well.
