Businesses and non-profits have started to use and have been started with NFTs being sold in the last 2-3 years. Most of the time these NFTs are being sold as a part of a collection. What does the Harvard Logo have to do with NFT profile pictures? In this episode of the Web3 Simplified Podcast, Sean is joined by Carroll Keane from Coolfire Studios and Reformers (a Web3 incubator community) to talk about how Web3 tech is being used to create communities. When you're walking through the airport and you see a logo from a school and/or team that you support, you feel an instant connection to that person. PFP (profile picture) NFTs have become popular in the last two years and they act like that logo. People change their profile picture on Twitter to the NFT they own and when scrolling through their feed or in Twitter Spaces they can easily identify who is in the community with them. That's on the surface. Underneath there's more to community. Vision, mission, and values are all a part of the conversation between Carroll and Sean. POAP: Stands for Proof of Attendance Protocol NFT: Stands for Non-fungible Token So what is a POAP NFT exactly? Think about it like this: When you attend a conference a lot of times you get a printed card on a lanyard. If that conference was memorable you save the lanyard. Because it has your name on it and is from a one-time event (that's the only conference with that name happening on those dates and at that time in history) it makes that lanyard unique. A POAP NFT is a lot like that. It's a digital image that is traceable through the blockchain. It's given out by the organizer(s) of an event only to people who attend that event. Now POAPs can be given away for other reasons (non-event related) but this is what they were created for. A POAP NFT is supposed to replace the commemorative ticket you keep from a concert or football game. Imagine going to the Super Bowl and your team winning. If you have a ticket from that event. You might put it in a frame and keep it. That's what a POAP NFT is designed to be. In this episode Sean explains more and gives a few examples for how the POAP NFTs can be used once they are given out. An oversimplified version of the blockchain: it's a digital record-keeping system through the internet. This digital record-keeping system keeps track of monetary exchanges (crypto transactions) and other digital assets (NFTs). If we want the blockchain of our choice to keep track of records and transactions, we need to have our own "account" like a bank account. We can also think of it like a mailing address. If we want someone to send us something, we need a mailing address for the blockchain to use. Groups of people and organizations have created (somewhat) simple and easy ways for us to keep track of these accounts / mailing addresses so that we can use the blockchain - a web3 wallet.
