This episode proves that nothing gold can stay, especially your 401k, as we kick things off with the revelation that October saw the worst tech layoffs since 2003, all while "Big Short" genius Michael Burry decided to bet a billion dollars on the inevitable AI bubble bursting. The villains of the week are legion: the FCC is officially making it easier for internet companies to charge us even more hidden fees; Elon Musk not only got his $1 trillion pay package approved—despite Tesla sales collapsing nearly 90% in some countries—but he also teased a flying car, clearly living in his own "Golden Dome" fantasy, which the Pentagon is happily subsidizing; and in a stunning display of entitlement, Mark Zuckerberg opened an illegal school, which is somehow less shocking than Meta's claim that their massive porn stash was purely for "personal use," not AI training. The bad news doesn't stop there, with Texas suing Roblox over 'pixel pedophiles,' though at least a rural Michigan healthcare system is doing some good by using drones to improve care.Jumping over to Media Candy, since we're all emotionally scarred by the sheer awful-ness of The Witcher S4—a season so bad it "broke" The Critical Drinker—we need some comfort viewing. We're deep-diving into the political chess of The Diplomat and escaping into the sheer volume of competitive cooking shows, including the standard Halloween and Holiday Baking Championships, plus the delightfully ridiculous Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking S2; we also took a look at Pluribus, Knife Edge, Black Rabbit, and the trailer for Tron: Ares, while cheering the fact that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to revive The Mummy franchise for a fourth film. In Apps & Doodads, we're all mourning the eventual death of simple, good tech as we're warned to enjoy Apple CarPlay while we still can, but at least the Lego ‘Star Trek' Set is finally here for our inner child; the real question, though, is why Automattic Inc. thinks they can claim ownership of the actual word 'Automatic.'Finally, The Dark Side with Dave Bittner reminds us that everything old is new again and ripe for monetization, whether it's Miss Piggy potentially bringing back The Muppets to the movies or the sleek, blacked-out remake of the Commodore 64, not to mention that cool Tron Arcade Cabinet Miniature Model. However, the present is still a complete dumpster fire: a Google AI model allegedly accused a senator of sexual assault, and internal documents show that Meta is earning a fortune on a massive deluge of fraudulent ads, proving that the only thing getting healthier is our paranoia, though Dave did throw in a curveball with some special jar lids and seeds for growing organic sprouts. We finish, as always, with the obligatory Closing Shout-Outs because even cynical geeks need validation.Sponsors:MasterClass - Get an additional 15% off any annual membership at MASTERCLASS.com/GRUMPYOLDGEEKSGusto - Try Gusto today at gusto.com/grumpy, and get three months free when you run your first payroll.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. Jana always tries to do the right thing, so when she receives a call from the sheriff's office stating that she missed jury duty, she panics. She thinks back to studying for her American citizenship exam and learning how important it is to respond to a jury summons. She doesn't remember receiving a notice, but the officer knows all her personal information and says she will have to pay a $9,000 bond or face arrest. Jana spends the next several hours driving from the bank to various crypto ATMs, trying desperately to meet the payment demands. When Jana discovers that it's a scam and calls 911, she learns that seven other people in her county were victimized the same day.

The Kansas City Star headline boasts "Nation Hit by Blue Wave." What a joke. These were the most lame elections ever and anyone trying to make anything of these is like a sports fan declaring the Chiefs are bad because they lost a preseason game. What a sham. You won't believe the composition of the electorate in NY City. If there is one alarming thing from Tuesday... this is it. Kansas AG Kris Kobach has charged the mayor of Coldwater, Kansas for committing election fraud. CBS ratings sizzle for the Chiefs/Bills and 60 Minutes with Donald Trump. The sky isn't falling, Vegas still loves the Chiefs. And then we have a great conversation with a young sports radio host that is moving more and more toward politics. His name is Paul Gallant and he was wrongly called a whacky liberal by Tucker Carlson. Paul is the host of the "Gallant Says" podcast on You Tube and all other pod platforms, and while he hasn't jumped into the deep end of conservative talk just yet, maybe we can provide him with an outlet right here at KKHI.
This week, our hosts Dave Bittner, Joe Carrigan, and Maria Varmazis (also host of the T-Minus Space Daily show) are sharing the latest in social engineering scams, phishing schemes, and criminal exploits that are making headlines. We start with some follow-up, listener Jay shared how Robinhood tackled a $25.4 billion phone scam problem with a simple fix—a bright yellow in-call banner that warns users, “We're not calling you. If the caller says they're from Robinhood, they're not—hang up.” Meanwhile, Myanmar's military blew up a major online scam center at KK Park, forcing over 1,500 people to flee into Thailand. Listener JJ reminds us it's “CAC cards,” not just “CAC,” and Shannon reports from Scooter's Coffee, where customers are now bringing chickens for pup cups—proving some pets really do rule the roost. Maria's story is on Bitdefender and NETGEAR's 2025 IoT Security Report, which found smart homes now face triple the attacks of last year—about 29 a day. Dave's story is on a cloud architect who exposed his AWS keys online, letting attackers hijack his account for crypto-mining and phishing. His takeaway: secure keys, limit privileges, and assume it can happen to you. Joe's got the story of scammers posing as banks or the FTC, using fake security alerts to trick older adults into draining their savings. The FTC says losses are skyrocketing—so don't move money or trust surprise calls or pop-ups. Our catch of the day comes from the Scams SubReddit, where a scammer got way more than what they signed up for in a text chain. Resources and links to stories: Robinhood LinkedIn post. Your Wi‑Fi might be your biggest blind spot, and we're putting it under a bright light. We dig into the push to ban TP‑Link in the U.S., what “firmware callbacks” really mean, and the simple, concrete steps that actually harden a home network: changing default credentials, updating firmware at least yearly, enabling WPA3, and leaning on MFA to shut down credential theft. No scare tactics—just the playbook that keeps real people safer. From there we pull the thread on attention economics in the oddest place: public restrooms. In parts of China, you now scan a QR code and watch an ad to get a ration of toilet paper or pay a few cents to skip it. Officials call it anti‑waste; users call it sponsored dignity. We unpack why this matters beyond bathrooms, and how “rewarded attention” business models creep into public infrastructure when no one's looking. We also put a $20,000 humanoid robot under the microscope. Neo can open doors and flip switches, but it relies on remote human operators for the hard stuff—folding laundry, loading dishes, organizing shelves. That's not autonomy; that's telepresence with great PR. We talk costs, privacy, and whether you're paying to be a beta tester while the AI learns on your dime. If you want actual help today, a local cleaner still wins on speed, cost, and accountability.Scam fighters, this one's for you: a convincing QuickBooks “relationship manager” email that funnels to a Calendly form harvesting bank details, and a fake invoice attachment that mimics a Microsoft 365 login to steal your password before opening your inbox so you don't suspect a thing. We show you the red flags and the countermeasures—verify domains, never type creds from an email, use a password manager, and lock in MFA.We round out with a quick look at Apple's iOS keyboard bug and AirPods static, a throwback to the Morris Worm's chaotic lesson on unintended consequences, and a preview of police cruisers that launch drones for aerial patrols. Plus, our whiskey semifinal, banter, and a secret sound challenge to test your ear.If this mix of practical security, tech trends, and a little humor hits the spot, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review. Your support helps more curious listeners find us—and keeps us fueled for next week's deep dive.Support the show
For years, "Stage 3" toddler milk has been the food industry's most brilliant, cynical, and profitable loophole. It was a legal way to hook parents on a brand, all while selling them a sugary, unnecessary product. Now, that loophole is snapping shut. In Australia, it just destroyed a 30-year regulatory agreement. And in the US, it's the target of a new fraud lawsuit that's smarter, sharper, and far more dangerous than the "ultra-processed" cases that have already failed. The industry's celebrated loophole isn't just becoming its noose; it's the key that could unlock the industry's entire playbook of deception. *Copy thanks to Gillespo.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Fraud usually gets talked about in numbers like how much money was stolen, how many people were affected, how many cases got filed. But behind every one of those numbers is a person who's been blindsided, manipulated, or left trying to rebuild trust in others and in themselves. This episode shifts the focus back to those human stories and the fight to protect them. My guest, Freddie Massimi, has spent more than a decade helping scam victims find both financial and emotional recovery, bringing empathy and understanding to a field that too often feels cold and procedural. As a certified financial crimes investigator and program manager at The Knoble, Freddie has made it his mission to bridge the gap between institutions and individuals. He shares the heartbreaking and hopeful moments that define his work including one phone call that saved a life. Along with how that experience changed the way he thinks about what true fraud prevention really means. Freddie also opens up about The Knoble's Post-Scam Victimization Guide, a collaborative, trauma-informed resource designed to help victims regain control of their lives and prevent re-victimization. From crypto scams to romance cons, he explains how these schemes keep evolving, why empathy is still one of the best tools we have, and how every fraud fighter can make a difference simply by listening and responding with humanity. Show Notes: [00:40] Freddie shares his background as a certified financial crimes investigator and program manager at The Knoble. [01:40] A look back at Freddie's early path into criminal justice and how empathy shaped his fraud-fighting approach. [03:07] The story of a Tennessee widow who lost $300,000 in a pig-butchering crypto scam. [04:30] Freddie's emotional account of saving a victim's life and how it reframed his mission to protect others. [07:42] The rise of collaborative fraud-fighter networks and Freddie's work leading The Knoble's post-scam initiatives. [08:11] How The Knoble unites financial institutions, law enforcement, and NGOs to address "human crime." [08:58] Development of the Post-Scam Victimization Guide, a trauma-informed resource for banks and fraud teams. [10:39] How financial crime has evolved from simple check scams to complex digital exploitation and trafficking. [13:01] The need for faster, more transparent information sharing between banks and law enforcement. [14:04] What makes the Post-Scam Guide different including actionable steps, empathy-driven language, and real-world tools. [15:00] Sextortion cases, Gavin's Law, and how shame and silence compound the harm. [18:30] Practical tools in the guide, including hotline numbers, QR codes, and scripts for supporting victims. [20:20] How to talk to romance scam victims with compassion including using questions that spark reality checks, not judgment. [22:00] Why shame keeps scams underreported and how trauma-informed communication changes outcomes. [23:19] The role of technology in scams: remote access, malware, and how scammers exploit smartphones and computers. [24:36] Shoutout to Kitboga for his cybersecurity tools and awareness campaigns against scam call centers. [25:22] Why elderly victims remain the most vulnerable and how education can empower prevention. [27:24] The double victimization cycle like when scammers return pretending to recover lost money. [30:00] Freddie's real-world example of helping a victim secure their accounts and recover identity. [32:50] How banks can adjust fraud detection systems to catch hidden patterns of exploitation. [34:30] Spotting red flags in gift card purchases and why speaking up can literally save lives. [36:31] Freddie's advice for anyone who suspects they're being scammed: stop all contact and secure your accounts. Assemblymember Sarah Clark is helping to lead the upcoming Empowered Aging Forum. The goal is to assist older adults in making better plans when it comes to handling money, estate plans, health care decisions, and more.
