We've heard about Postpartum Depression but whats the difference between PPD and Postpartum Psychosis? Why do new moms wake up in the middle of the night and frantically dig through their bed looking for their baby who is safely sleeping in a bassinet beside them? Why do breasts lactate from the mere sound of a baby crying? Should you eat your placenta? Are there lasting health risks/benefits from giving birth? And finally, whats the word regarding cord blood? In this episode, Mike PhD, Kevin PhD and Samantha discuss what happens to a woman's body and mind after giving birth. While Samantha was busy panicking about safe sleeping environments, her husband prepared for the baby in other ways - financial, legal, logistical etc.
Samantha breaks down how she and her husband prepped themselves and their home for baby. Printing out charts for warming bottles, milk storage, emergency numbers and pet care instructions was all vital. Then it’s stocking up on OTC meds, dealing with well-meaning but completely unsolicited advice and why it’s important to invest in the proper safety equipment for car, stroller and crib. Plus: Navigating insurance and what happens when your water breaks…or doesn’t! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Cream that gets rid of stretch marks, The Dock-A-Tot that has been linked to infant deaths, spicy food for labor and of course, vaccines. Mike PhD and Kevin PhD are back to discuss genetic dominance in the womb and why some predispositions can be predicted and/or verified while others cannot. As science continues to progress, will the accuracy of quantifiable predictions sharpen? Samantha and her husband are expecting their first child this summer and it wasn't even halfway through their first trimester when they realized the experience of becoming a parent is nothing like they imagined. Endless screenings, tests, judgmental opinions from doctors, nurses and friends and essentially no resource for support. Fed up with being guilt tripped and scared, Samantha turned to the Scientists at WYSP to discuss what was actually going on with her body and her baby and quickly realized that the word "fault" should be struck from the vocabulary of any expectant parent. Episode 1 of 6 with our friends from WYSP Science's podcast, "Mikroscope!" Mike and Kevin are both working on their PhD's in the field of Microbiology and Samantha is on a quest to remind you just how out of your control pregnancy is. In this episode, they discuss the science of actually getting pregnant and the millions of things that prevent even the healthiest and most ideal people from conceiving. The response to our last episode has been overwhelming...In a good way and in a not so good way. It seems we aren’t the only ones who find Mommy Shaming and Parenting rife with negativity and a “holier than thou” tone. So what do we do when we’re not sure if it’s a rash or an allergic reaction? Should we crumble if the number one recommended bottle causes gas? And how should we share pregnancy news with a mixed bag of friends and family? Samantha has some ideas of how to get answers, be fair and not totally lose your mind and hopefully they’ll help you as well. Samantha and James are officially 19 weeks pregnant and the first trimester smack in the height of a pandemic was scary, isolating and maddening. You may have heard that "Mom Shaming" and The Parenting Community in general is one of the most toxic in The US and boy...it sure is. Pregnancy isn't a single thing like you think it will be and when you pile on Social Distancing, negativity from lifelong friends and navigating through tests and screenings, the whole experience has you wondering if you will ever be able to have a worry free day again. This season will steer clear of cute DIY projects and surface level topics like baby shower themes. We're going to go straight to the pits and perils of parenthood which can only be joyful if you literally block everyone else's opinions and "advice." Up next: A collaboration with Mike Phd and Kevin Phd from WYSP Science and the podcast, "Mikroscope" to discuss the science of getting pregnant, the fight for genetic dominance, pregnancy myths and gimmicks and the science behind PPD and other physiological changes after birth. COVID sent thousands of people packing right back to where it all started - their parents house. Now we have retired parents with adult children crowding their dinner tables with screens, computers and endless coffee mugs. There's young adults who managed to hold on to their first adult job who are trying to establish their place at their company as dad yells at the TV and mom gossips loudly into the phone. And then there are the thousands who are now unemployed, back home feeling lost, angry and without purpose with no promise of a brighter future ahead. CorBen recently moved home to Alaska from the hustle and bustle of NYC after reaching the door of what would have been the pinnacle of his career; a spot in the cast of "Hamilton." Samantha has moved home more times than she cares to admit. It's hard. You're grateful but it's hard. But, it's not forever. Take is from us, this too shall pass. Sarah grew up in New England where she attended the most exclusive schools and was well on her way to becoming an Olympic Rower. But when stress and unfulfilling goals became a voice in her head she couldn't ignore, she headed out west in search of herself. Yoga and making jewelry with responsibly sourced stones gave Sarah the serenity she had been longing for, and now she travels around the world with her partner Kyle and their dog, living out of their van and offering classes in Breathwork. Sarah had a life in New York City that would lead any career driven person to jealousy. A full time job at an established company with nights and weekends off to dine at the best restaurants and skip out to The Hamptons in the Summer. But a reality not unlike the now famous one featured in, "The Devil Wears Prada" drove her away from the bright lights and straight for the hills...literally. And she's not alone. In fact, millions of Millenials are leaving careers in big cities that their parents prayed they would have and are moving closer to nature, thus accepting massive slashes to their income and a complete upside down flip of their current lifestyle. But why? Join Dana, Samantha, and Sarah for a unique journey in search of "the idea" and the mad, unapologetic dash towards what life is truly all about.
