Send a textThis episode brings you two Sundance documentaries that show very different ways that technology can have an impact on our lives.Joybubbles is a biopic about a deaf man (born decades before the internet or the computer) who learns how to manipulate the telephone system by whistling, and inadvertently lays the groundwork for the future of hacking and technology. Director Rachel J. Morrison joins us to share how she learned about Joybubbles from his obituary in the NY Times, his connection to Mr. Rogers, and the meta way in which she found hours of tapes of Joybubbles speaking about his life. Ghost in the Machine is a documentary that reveals the dark untold origins of Artificial Intelligence, and where we go from here. Director Valerie Veatch sits down with us to discuss her years long work examining the intersection of technology and society, why we should all be friction maxing everyday (and what the hell that actually means), and how being a parent informs her work (and vice versa).Follow Joybubbles on IGFollow director Rachel J. What does it take for a friendship to last from sixth grade to midlife? In this episode of Talking Smack 415, Jamie the Great and I we dive deep into the origin story of a forever friendship that belongs to Caryn and Jen and began at Brett Harte Elementary School in Cherry Hill, New Jersey — back when Guess jeans, first bras, and hours-long phone calls ruled the world. This is a story about growing up together and navigating friendship into adulthood. And about choosing each other again and again over decades. We talk about:Talking on the phone for hours (when life was innocent and drama meant who liked who)Playing Uno for hours and chatting on the swings ( a total stranger things moment) The time they stood up for themselves after a teacher called them “dirt bags”Getting their periods and figuring out how to use a tamponAdmiration, loyalty, and the safety of a judgment-free zone A few “mean girl” moments (because high school…) Why this relationship remains one of the most important in their livesThrough middle school memories, teenage growing pains, and adult responsibilities, what has kept them bonded is something rare: A total judgment-free zone. This episode is for anyone who:Still talks to their elementary school best friendWonders how to maintain long-term female friendshipsBelieves women need lifelong friendships to thriveIs navigating midlife and reflecting on the people who shaped themBecause sometimes the most important love story in your life… isn't romantic. It's your best friend from 6th grade.Research shows that long-term female friendships improve mental health, longevity, and emotional resilience. But what does that look like in real life?It looks like:Phone cords stretched across bedroomsSharing secrets before you even know who you areGrowing up without growing apartChoosing loyalty over egoKnowing someone has seen every version of you — and loves you anywayThis is nostalgia, vulnerability, laughter, and real talk about why female friendships are foundational — especially in midlife.Share this episode with your friends and family who love to laugh. In this week's episode, Gretchen gets into the messy conversation about friendship breakups that nobody teaches you. Think of her as the honest but protective, blunt BFF. She discusses toxic friendships, one-sided effort, and that “are we still friends or…?” limbo that can hit harder than a romantic breakup. She breaks down why it feels so brutal, how to spot when you're giving way more than you're getting, and when a friendship doesn't deserve a big talk or “closure” moment. Gretchen also calls out the need for grace and direct conversations in adult friendships that are different from college-aged friendships. She shares what to do about subtle digs and gives you simple scripts for calling it out in the moment. If you're questioning a friendship, feeling drained, or scared to outgrow someone, this episode will feel like the clarity you've been looking for.

What if life itself is just a really sophisticated computer program that wrote itself into existence? In this mind-bending talk, *Blaise Agüera y Arcas* takes us on a journey from random noise to the emergence of life, using nothing but simple code and a whole lot of patience. His artificial life experiment, cheekily named "BFF" (the first two letters stand for "Brainf***"), demonstrates something remarkable: when you let random strings of code interact millions of times, complex self-replicating programs spontaneously emerge from pure chaos.*Key Insights from this Talk:**The "Artificial Kidney" Test for Life* — What makes something alive isn't what it's made of, but what it *does*. A rock broken in half gives you two rocks. A kidney broken in half gives you a broken kidney. Function is what separates the living from the non-living.*Von Neumann Called It* — Before we even knew what DNA looked like, mathematician John von Neumann figured out exactly what life needed to copy itself: instructions, a constructor to follow them, and a way to copy those instructions. He basically predicted molecular biology from pure logic.*The Magic Moment* — Watch as Blaise shows the exact instant when his simulation transitions from random noise to organized, self-replicating code. It's a genuine phase transition, like water freezing into ice, except instead of ice, you get *life*.*Evolution Without Mutation* — Here's the twist that challenges everything you learned in biology class: this complexity emerges even when mutation is set to zero. The secret? Symbiogenesis. Things don't just mutate to get better; they *merge*. Two simple replicators that work well together fuse into something more complex.*We're All Made of Viruses* — This isn't just simulation theory. In the real world, the mammalian placenta came from an ancient virus. A gene essential for forming memories? Also a virus. Life has been merging and absorbing other life forms all the way down. The implications are profound: life isn't just computational, it was computational from the very beginning. And intelligence? That's just what happens when these biological computers start modeling each other.Whether you're into artificial life, evolutionary biology, or just want to understand what makes you *you*, this talk will fundamentally change how you think about the boundary between living and non-living matter.---TIMESTAMPS:00:00:00 Introduction: From Noise to Programs & ALife History00:03:15 Defining Life: Function as the "Spirit"00:05:45 Von Neumann's Insight: Life is Embodied Computation00:09:15 Physics of Computation: Irreversibility & Fallacies00:15:00 The BFF Experiment: Spontaneous Generation of Code00:23:45 The Mystery: Complexity Growth Without Mutation00:27:00 Symbiogenesis: The Engine of Novelty00:33:15 Mathematical Proof: Blocking Symbiosis Stops Life00:40:15 Evolutionary Implications: It's Symbiogenesis All The Way Down00:44:30 Intelligence as Modeling Others00:46:49 Q&A: Levels of Abstraction & Definitions---REFERENCES:Paper:[00:01:16] Open Problems in Artificial Lifehttps://direct.mit.edu/artl/article/6/4/363/2354/Open-Problems-in-Artificial-Life[00:09:30] When does a physical system compute?https://arxiv.org/abs/1309.7979[00:15:00] Computational Lifehttps://arxiv.org/abs/2406.19108[00:27:30] On the Origin of Mitosing Cellshttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11541392/[00:42:00] The Major Evolutionary Transitionshttps://www.nature.com/articles/374227a0[00:44:00] The ARC genehttps://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/memory-gene-goes-viralPerson:[00:05:45] Alan Turinghttps://plato.stanford.edu/entries/turing/[00:07:30] John von Neumannhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_von_Neumann[00:11:15] Hector Zenilhttps://hectorzenil.net/[00:12:00] Robert Sapolskyhttps://profiles.stanford.edu/robert-sapolsky---LINKS:RESCRIPT: https://app.rescript.info/public/share/ff7gb6HpezOR3DF-gr9-rCoMFzzEgUjLQK6voV5XVWY
This week at the Desk of Ladyada, we're back to hardware... with a baby in a bouncer and an LLM on the clock. The VCNL4010 proximity sensor has been discontinued, so we need to move to the VCNL4030. That means a new EagleCAD library file, and we're testing whether Claude Code (Opus, high effort) can generate one straight from the datasheet. Historically we've had to create a footprint for each device we use - and one of our gripes is how annoying it is to convert when manufacturers spec edge-to-edge pad dimensions instead of center-to-center pitch, which is what every CAD tool actually uses. In our experiment, Claude Code handled the math, got the pad sizes (0.65 x 0.75mm) and pitch (1.05mm) correct on the footprint, arranged logical pin grouping on the schematic and matched pin-to-pad correctly.. It even matched our drawing style by learning from existing Adafruit library files in the repo. The whole run took about 4 minutes and 45 seconds.Nota bene: it's not perfect! Our first pass had schem label overlaps and an unnecessary exposed center pad (Gemini Deep Think was actually smarter about skipping that pad). We also tried having Claude Code design a full QT Py terminal BFF board... it worked-ish but needed enough back-and-forth that doing it by hand would've been faster. Footprint generation is ready for integration into our workflow - maybe we'll kick it off while we review the datasheet - but, full board layout isn't quite there yet. Other things on the desk: we're setting up OpenClaw to subscribe to every chip manufacturer newsletter and generate daily reports on new components worth stocking. New protos include the TMF8806 time-of-flight sensor from AMS (up to 10 meters, and possibly simpler drivers than ST's VL53 series) and a PMW3901 optical flow sensor often used in drone navigation. Send a textWe're excited to share this conversation with our new best friend, Rosanna Arquette! She stars in The Moment alongside Charli XCX, a mockumentary about a rising pop star navigating fame and industry pressure while preparing for her debut arena tour. We become fast friends about our mutual love for the Bay, the importance of art and activism, and our collective hate for ai. Then Rosanna shares her thoughts on Taylor Swift, her family's legacy in the entertainment industry (including her daughter starring most recently in Dracula: A Love Tale), and which director she would love to collaborate with in the future. Our thanks to Rosanna for being lovely AF, and for this beautiful, honest conversation.Click here to watch The Moment in theaters right now!Follow Rosanna Arquette on IG and BlueSkySupport the showThanks for listening and for your support! “Has anything you've done made your life better?” Join Ian, Liam, Megs & Kev for our 317th episode as we confront anger, ideology, consequence, and redemption in Tony Kaye's incendiary and unforgettable American History X (1998). This week, we're also joined by BFF of the BFE: Hermes Auslander, and — in a huge moment for the podcast — we sit down for a special interview with director Tony Kaye himself. This one is heavy. Necessary. Complicated. This week we discuss: Edward Norton's blistering performance — charismatic, terrifying, magnetic. Is this one of the great transformations of the 1990s? The black-and-white vs colour structure — memory, myth, and moral framing. How does the visual language shape our understanding of Derek's journey? The film's central question — can hate be unlearned, and if so, what does it cost? Hermes joins us to unpack the film's cultural and political legacy — why it still resonates, and why it remains controversial. The prison sequence — brutal, pivotal, and narratively dangerous. Does the film handle trauma responsibly? We examine the fine line between depiction and endorsement — does the film risk glamorising the ideology it condemns? The ending — inevitable, devastating, and still capable of knocking the wind out of an audience. What does it ultimately say about cycles of violence? Our special interview with Tony Kaye — reflections on authorship, conflict over the final cut, working with Edward Norton, and how he views the film now, decades later. The legacy question — has the film aged well? Has it been misunderstood? Has it been weaponised? And finally, whether American History X is the Best Film Ever — or one of the most important and confronting films we've ever covered. This episode is, shockingly, mostly about water—how much we need it, how often we forget that, and why it matters more than we'd like to admit.Somewhere in the conversation we also end up drafting a very unofficial Mt Rushmore of celebrity colonial ship crew to honor one full year of Naughty Nation! Think: long voyages, limited resources, and the importance of having the right people on deck when things get real.Hydration is discussed. History is revised. No actual sailing required. Angelina Keeley & Aubry Bracco Survivor 50 Preseason Interviews Mike Bloom (@AMikeBloomType) is here to chat to the cast of Survivor 50! Join us to hear from your favorite returning Survivor players! Today, Mike Bloom starts a preseason deep dive into the Vatu tribe featuring returnees Angelina Keeley and Aubry Bracco. Angelina opens up about her major life changes since David vs. Goliath, while Aubry reflects on her evolution across her storied Survivor journey, setting the stage for a season full of big personalities, new alliances, and possible blindsides. Mike chats with Angelina about what it's like to be called back after seven years away from the game, including leaving behind a young family and a new business to take another shot at the title of Sole Survivor. Angelina breaks down her approach heading into the game, how being a mom and entrepreneur brings a new flavor to her gameplay, why her “BFF, friend, or foe” approach will guide her alliances, and how she handles being labeled “chaotic.” Aubry discusses her surprise at being invited back, what she's learned from her three previous seasons, and how she aims to play with more self-awareness, adaptability, and focus on one-on-one connections. Both women weigh in on their perceptions of fellow castaways, discussing new era strategists, obvious threats, and the push and pull between loyalty and gameplay. Angelina ranks her cast as BFF, friend, or foe in a candid alliances game, revealing beef, admiration, and strategic wariness, especially when it comes to winners and new era players. Aubry shares how being blindsided in Edge of Extinction changed her approach, and why she's focused on staying grounded and present this time around. Both discuss leaving behind kids, running businesses, and the “joyful warrior” mindset they hope to channel on the island. Each interview explores Survivor's evolving meta, including whether recent winners should be targeted, which returnees are most dangerous, and how pre-existing relationships will shape alliances. Funny moments include Angelina's dream “summer solstice” camp party and her family rooting for Ozzy right alongside her. As the anticipation for season 50 builds, Mike asks: Can Angelina or Aubry climb higher on the Survivor ladder, or will new threats and old friends stand in their way? How will personal growth off the island translate into better game performance in Fiji's high-stakes returnee showdown?
