I love my parents. I grew up with a world-class education. And yet, nobody actually ever taught me how to be an adult. As a result, I made a ton of avoidable mistakes. I suffered far more than necessary. And I fumbled in the dark for years until eventually, I figured a few things out. Unfortunately, my experience is all too common.Today's guest—a woman who spent years mentoring and advising some of the brightest young people in the entire world—would agree, so she decided to do something about it.Julie Lythcott-Haims is the former dean of freshmen and undergraduate advising at Stanford University, where she earned her B.A. (as my classmate) before obtaining a law degree from Harvard and a master's in fine arts and writing from California College of the Arts.Today Julie is an author and authority on what we now call—in Millenial parlance—adulting. Her TED Talk 'How to raise successful kids without over-parenting' has over 5 million views, and her books include the New York Times bestseller, How To Raise An Adult and Real American—a memoir centered on coming to terms with her racial identity.Julie's latest work and the focus of today's conversation is Your Turn: How To Be An Adult. For those just emerging into the grown-up world, it's a must-read life handbook. For parents, it's a must-gift for your young ones entering their adult phase of life. All in all, it's a guide I very much wish existed during my formative years. This conversation is packed with practical insights for both parents and young people alike. We cover the downfalls of being a helicopter parent, the importance of learning conversation skills, and why paying attention to what you like and don't like is more important than finding a purpose. But more than anything, this conversation is about why diversity and inclusivity are vital in parenting, educating, and adulting. To read more click here. You can also watch listen to our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. This is appointment listening for young people emerging into the world or parents striving to best guide their kids into maturity. But no matter your age, we can all use some wisdom about how to grow up a little bit more.Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Though we all turned 30 this year, I hope this vulnerable conversation around societal pressures and the paths our lives have taken because of the choices we've each made resonates with anyone at any stage of life. In today's episode we'll talk about Turning 30 and what that looks like in a pandemic, learning to love yourself and then relearning to love yourself over and over again, and learning to say no for your own healthy and safety.  On the next episode we'll continue the conversation of ego vs. spirit, answer questions submitted to Morgan's IG stories, and talk about our favorite quotes and philosophies we're planning on carrying into our 30s. Check out our guests:Morgan Pelt is a Social Media Manager for a Fortune 500 company, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. More recently, she became a first-time homeowner and new mom, all within six months, during a global health pandemic. For fun, she manages a lifestyle blog, called Columbus Living, which she started in 2014, which has grown organically to more than 12K followers. She uses her platform to connect with the Columbus community, while sharing her real experiences of navigating motherhood and womanhood, and all things fun throughout the city. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelors degree in Communications and a certificate in Public Relations. Her professional experience includes a decade of working in communications, marketing, and media relations across various industries. She's been together with her husband for 12 years, and happily married for four. Her passions include: supporting women's rights (with an emphasis on pay equity and transparency), and supporting local businesses (specifically women-owned, Black-owned, and LGBTQ-owned). Paulette Burks is an experienced corporate social responsibility leader in the Central Ohio community - from working for two national non-profits to serving as the Community Affairs  & Philanthropy Specialist for a well known fashion and home accessories brand, she is now continuing her servant leadership as the Sustainability Specialist at Alliance Data! As a dedicated member of her community Paulette served as the 2017 – 2019 Marketing Co-Chair for the Columbus Urban League Young Professionals Board. In April 2019 Paulette earned a Master of Public Administration from Wright State University and now affectionately refers to herself as Master P. Today we're going to talk about one of my favorite topics – demographics.  Specifically, how Generation Z is going to amplify the trends that millennials have already established, such as delaying marriage and living with their friends into their 30's.  It pays to understand these trends and the disruption they create in the traditional rental housing market.  Concepts such as Shared Housing and Coliving are being monetized by savvy investors who see this as a lasting and lucrative trend. My guest today is one of those investors.  Johnny Wolff has roots in Silicon Valley and is the CEO and Founder of HomeRoom Coliving, which is one of the fastest growing coliving companies in the United States. Today Johnny is going to compare and contrast the Millenial and Gen Z demographics and explain the minimum and maximum technology and services they expect to encounter when renting.  Johnny will share the app he uses to create 3D tours, floor plans and dimensions of his properties, and the way he conducts his virtual tours and video interviews. We'll also talk about the type of property that works well for coliving, and how Johnny maximizes the space by adding bedrooms in order to increase rent income per square foot. If you're looking for ways to add upside value to the traditional rental housing model, then you definitely want to hear how Johnny is increasing net income by over 30%.  You can find out more about Johnny and HomeRoom Coliving through email: johnny@livehomeroom.com or website: https://livehomeroom.com Today's episode is brought to you by Green Property Management, managing everything from single family homes to apartment complexes in the West Michigan area. https://www.livegreenlocal.com And RCB & Associates, helping Michigan-based real estate investors and small business owners navigate the complex world of health insurance and medicare benefits. https://www.rcbassociatesllc.com

“Rachel Hollis is a manifestation of a larger ideology about women's place in society. That if you just try hard enough, all of these structural issues that are making your life really, really hard can be solved if you just wash your face. .” - Anne Helen Petersen Anne Helen Petersen is one of our most essential cultural observers. Her work at Buzzfeed culminated in her 2020 book, Can't Even: How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation. Now she's using Culture Study, her Substack newsletter, to explore everything from The Unified Theory of Peloton to how to make friends. In the episode, Laura and Anne unpack the faux empowerment of Rachel Hollis, the ways we sell quick fixes to systemic problems (like how a bath bomb will overcome the ways our society devalues women, and, particularly mothers) and the myth of “having it all.” More than ever, this is one to share with your favorite people!
