Send us a textRoberta Nickel shares insights with Mark about her 18-plus years in the Canadian Navy, as the only woman in her unit. Her time as her mom's caregiver led to her discovering a love of belly dancing. Into the mix was embracing the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval live events group, which was interestingly paired with her entry as a practising Wiccan. She relates dancing for her commanding officer on his 40th birthday. There is the unique experience of guiding a blind friend through every ride at the Calgary Stampede.  Roberta BioRoberta was born in Calgary and did her schooling   there. She is a second-generation Calgarian. She is a railway brat as her father worked as a conductor for the CNR and she saw a lot of Western Canada from the window of a train. When she turned 17 and 6 months, she joined the RCNR and  Became a Communicator, which made her father proud. She spent 18 and a half years in the navy and saw much of Canada during that time. She can tell you a lot about that time. Just ask her.After doing her time, she became her mother's caregiver. She did that until 1998 when her mother passed away.Roberta does Belly dancing and Square Dancing to relive  stress. She also rides horses; can do Archery; does Background acting; and enjoys Reading.She is a witch and enjoys learning the many aspects of it.She had always wanted to do a Playboy style photo shoot and that is when she met Mark and the rest is history. She has many photos that tell a story. Thank you Mark.Roberta also likes to travel and has been to Scotland and Egypt. Would she return? In a heartbeat.She also works for the Calgary Stampede in Catering . What's next for this lady? Only time will tell.

It's a Thursday night and a group of folks in Washington Heights do-si-do to the bassline from “Shake Your Groove Thing” by Peaches & Herb. Square dancing has a reputation as more of a hobby for white people set to country music. But social clubs like the Southside Squares are turning that image on its head. Last episode, we heard how square dancing was once a booming hobby. Today, we hear from one social club that's working to keep it alive in the 21st century. But square dancing's African and African-American roots often get lost in popular accounts. Some of the first callers and musicians were enslaved Black people. Since then, square dancing has continued to be a part of African-American communities, including a long-running social club that meets up in Washington Heights every week to get down. Today, we hear from members of the Southside Squares. And you can't have a dance without a caller. We also talk with a living legend in square dancing: world renowned caller Sandie Bryant. She'll show us the ropes and tell us what it's like being one of the few Black women callers today.

Jerry Jestin, one of the most innovative callers when it came to choreography and presentation, is featured.  Jerry who started calling as a youth in his native Canada went on to travel the world as a professional caller.  He recorded many hits on many labels and was a true pioneer in the square and round dance activity in Yuma, Arizona.  Calling while his wife, Janice taught clogging, they built a very successful winter program from 1984 to 2018, when they retired. There's a new dance craze sweeping mainland Nova Scotia. It brought more than 200 people out to the dance floor of the Mayflower Curling Club a few months ago and they're getting ready for another tour next week. Host Jeff Douglas spoke with Peter Leblanc, who runs Front Porch Farm in Margaree, Cape Breton.

WPA writer Sara B. Wrenn's oral history interview with pioneer Oswego resident C.T. Dickinson, recalling how the land was when the lake was thick with fish and ducks and people were thin on the land.
