Starting March 31, the Town Green lawn will close until May 9 to allow new grass to take root, reopening for the summer concert series on May 10. Parking deck repairs are also underway, with sections temporarily closed on a rolling basis until July. The deck will remain open, with directional signs ensuring safety and minimizing disruption. City officials appreciate residents' patience as they work to maintain the center's long-term functionality. STORY 5: Fox Theatre Offers High School Students A Chance To Learn About Working In The Performing Arts The Fox Theatre’s Fox Gives program is accepting applications for its 2025-2026 All-Access Pass, an immersive initiative for high school students interested in performing arts careers. Open to Georgia public and Title I schools within 50 miles of the Fox, the program offers hands-on learning, mentorship, live performance access, and career workshops. Schools with active arts programs can apply by May 9, with up to 30 students from three schools selected. GSMST Principal Logan Malm confirmed Mo is no longer a student at the school, and swift disciplinary and legal actions were taken. Released on a $5,000 bond, Mo is barred from returning to GSMST. The incident was reported by another student, highlighting the school’s “See Something, Say Something” safety culture. STORY 7: Lawrenceville annexation bill headed to governor's desk Lawrenceville is one step away from a May 2026 referendum on annexing 5.3 square miles, potentially adding 19,000 residents and becoming Gwinnett County's largest city. The Georgia Senate unanimously passed House Bill 739, awaiting Gov. Brian Kemp's signature. If approved, the annexation would balance the city's tax base, reducing tax-exempt properties from 40% to 21%. Residents in the annexed areas would see no net change in millage rates but would shift to city services. The expansion, effective January 2027, would require $9 million annually for additional services, offset by matching revenue. In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Curt Johansen, a pioneer in conservation communities. He is the Development Director for Triad Communities, President of Council of Infill Builders, and has dedicated years to blending economic growth with environmental preservation. In his own words, he is advancing the art of finding balance between environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic prosperity. Curt and Ted dive right into his work building out Lagoon Valley, the Bay Area's First Conservation Community, where sustainability is not just a goal but a way of life. Curt oversees all aspects of community development, which features over 700,000 square feet of office space, an organic farm, wildlife preserve, 1,015 homes consisting of fourteen neighborhoods, ranging from affordable to age-qualified and executive housing, a vibrant Town Center, numerous parks, with over 70% of the Specific Plan area conserved for open space and recreational use. He and Ted discuss the sustainable development principles that are at the core of the community. He emphasizes the importance of incorporating live, work, and play. He also mentions the conservation work and preservation that has been done and is unique to the community. This includes a golf course that will not only serve as a championship-level course, but will act as a fire and flood buffer for the area.Curt shares that his design model has always been to never replicate, but to embrace change and diversity, to employ compassion for the uniqueness of each location, to honor existing demands of environmental stewardship, and employ lessons learned from others that find better methods for living sustainably on this planet. Ted concludes by commending him for deliberately creating a sustainable culture and community, and addressing all the resource issues that the Lagoon Valley faces.

Big Haynes Creek and the Alcovy River exceeded flood stages, with minor flooding reported in several locations, including the Yellow River basin and Suwanee Creek. The county is under a Tropical Storm Warning, with flash flood warnings in effect. Power outages affected thousands, with Georgia Power, Jackson EMC, and Walton EMC reporting significant disruptions. The National Weather Service warned of possible tornadoes and high winds, with gusts reaching up to 70 mph in some areas. STORY 2: Gwinnett schools officials defend putting weapons detection systems in stadiums instead of schools Hurricane Helene delayed the debut of Gwinnett County Public Schools' new weapons detection devices at Lanier High School's football stadium, as all games were canceled. The devices, part of a $3 million purchase, aim to enhance safety at athletic events. District officials demonstrated the devices to the media, addressing concerns about prioritizing stadiums over schools. The Evolv system can detect concealed weapons and will be implemented gradually at football games. While some parents questioned the decision, officials emphasized the importance of a multi-layered security approach, including cameras and school resource officers, to ensure safety. STORY 3: Gwinnett County Public Schools SAT results top national average Gwinnett County Public Schools' "SAT for All" initiative has led to the Class of 2024 scoring 21 points above the national average on the SAT, with an average score of 1016. Murder in Florida at the Town Center at Boca Raton Mall in Florida was the site of several unsolved attacks in 2007, including the kidnapping and murder of Randy Gorenberg and the killings of Nancy Bochicchio and her daughter Joey.On March 23, 2007, Gorenberg was kidnapped from the mall's parking lot in her own SUV at around 1:15 PM. About 30 minutes later, someone at the South County Civic Center called 911 to report hearing gunshots and seeing a woman being thrown from an SUV. Gorenberg's body was found near the Civic Center at Governor Lawton Chiles Memorial Park, five miles away from where she was taken. Some believe the killer was a sociopath who abducted Gorenberg and shot her in the face in a public place.Nancy Bochicchio and Joey.Bochicchio and her young daughter Joey were also victims of attacks at the mall during 2007. While there's no direct forensic evidence linking the cases, investigators believe they may be related to an August 7, 2007 carjacking incident at the mall. In that incident, a suspect entered Jane Doe's vehicle after she left the mall with her son, but they were able to survive an attempted abduction.=======================================Get the ProfilingEvil coaster set, stickers and pen: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/profilingevilOrder a copy of Deceived or She Knew No Fear and get the book signed for free! https://www.ProfilingEvil.comSUPPORT our Podcasts: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1213394/support

STORY 7: Personalized flu shots closer after major breakthrough Researchers have made a breakthrough in personalized flu vaccines by identifying biomarkers that gauge an individual's ability to resist infection. This discovery could revolutionize vaccination programs, allowing for tailored vaccine doses based on a person's immune response. The study, led by Dr. Nhan Nguyen, analyzed blood samples from 286 donors across multiple flu seasons. They found that current vaccine response assessments may not accurately predict immunity, especially for those with high pre-vaccination antibody levels. The identified biomarkers offer a more sophisticated approach to assessing vaccine effectiveness. The researchers aim to develop personalized flu vaccines and diagnostic tests based on these biomarkers, reducing costs and increasing protection against infection. The findings will be presented at the European Society of Human Genetics conference, signaling a significant advancement in personalized healthcare. We'll have final thoughts after this. Additionally, construction on a 15-story tower at Northside Gwinnett in Lawrenceville is underway, expected to add over 300 patient beds and make it the largest campus in the hospital system by 2025. Another Northside medical office building is planned on Sugarloaf Parkway. Northeast Georgia Health System is also expanding its Braselton hospital campus with a $565 million project, adding 150 licensed acute care beds and doubling the number of treatment rooms in the Emergency Department. The expansion is scheduled to open in phases, with the first phase expected in summer 2025 and the second phase in 2026. STORY 2: Northeast Gwinnett Residents Face Big Decision On Area's Future In Cityhood Vote. An Update The proposed cityhood of Mulberry in Gwinnett County is headed to a referendum vote after Governor Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 333 into law. If approved, Mulberry would become Gwinnett County's 17th city, encompassing approximately 41,000 residents and becoming the county's largest city by geographic size and the second-largest by population. Proponents, including House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, highlight the opportunity for local control over planning and zoning decisions without imposing a city property tax. Senate Bill 457 aims to create a consumer's utility counsel to advocate for the public in rate cases, responding to recent rate increases approved by the Public Service Commission (PSC). The bill seeks to ensure robust information is considered, although the PSC argues that existing advocacy staff already represents consumer interests effectively. These legislative efforts aim to address concerns of ratepayers and improve utility regulation in Georgia. STORY 7: Black Friday Turnout Down From Years Past The traditional Black Friday shopping experience, characterized by massive crowds and early openings, is evolving. While sizable crowds were observed at Kennesaw's Town Center Mall and Cumberland Mall on the day after Thanksgiving, shoppers noted that the crowds were noticeably smaller than in previous years. Online shopping is often blamed for this shift, but Chris McCoy, senior general manager at Cumberland Mall, pointed out that Black Friday deals now extend beyond the day itself, spanning the entire week or even the entire month of November. The change has contributed to a more spread-out and less intense shopping experience, with crowds estimated at around a quarter of those seen five years ago. The impact of online shopping and extended sale periods is evident in the changing dynamics of in-person Black Friday shopping. Harris Elementary School, Partee Elementary School, Paul Duke STEM High School, and Pharr Elementary School have been named 2023 Title I Distinguished Schools, signifying that they are in the top 5% for both Schoolwide Program and Targeted Assistance Program schools in the state and have the highest absolute performance for all students based on statewide assessments. These four schools are among a group of 78 that received this designation. Additionally, Central Gwinnett High School, Duluth High School, Paul Duke STEM High, and Rosebud Elementary School are 2023 Title I Reward Schools, ranking in the top 5% of Title I schools in the state for improving the performance of all students. All seven schools will receive certificates and recognition and are eligible to apply for the National NSEA Distinguished School Award, with the possibility of receiving $20,000 in state Title I funds for their achievements. STORY 3: State Officials Seek Input from Gwinnett Drivers Before Making Changes to Hwy. 316 The Georgia Department of Transportation is seeking input from Gwinnett drivers who use State Route 316 to access Athens or other destinations. They are planning to convert the intersections at Kilcrease and Carl-Bethlehem Roads in Barrow County into grade-separated interchanges. The changes will affect drivers traveling to or from Athens, including those visiting the University of Georgia. GDOT is soliciting feedback on various aspects of the project, such as the construction timeline, traffic mitigation, and costs. The proposed changes would allow for access to Kilcrease Road via an interchange with roundabouts but would eliminate direct access to Carl-Bethlehem Road from the highway. GDOT is promoting these changes as a way to enhance safety and accommodate population growth in the area. A virtual presentation and Q&A session are scheduled for October 19 to provide further details and address questions. Drivers and residents can review plans and submit feedback on GDOT's project website. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. The retreat is scheduled for September 14-16 at GMA's headquarters in Atlanta. While the retreat was approved in a split vote, some council members expressed concerns about the cost and location. There was also a discussion about hiring a "mission and vision specialist" to assist with crafting a mission statement, but this decision was tabled for a later date. The retreat is seen as a necessary step in establishing Mableton as a functioning city government, with a budget being a top priority. Initially, there was a misconception that GMA's facilities and expertise would be free, but it was revealed to cost $750 per day, totaling around $1,875 for the retreat.
