The Glossy Podcast
The dos and don'ts of method dressing with Micaela Erlanger

The Glossy Podcast

Method dressing is once again dominating the red carpet. At the Los Angeles premiere of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on July 27, Zendaya arrived in an Ashi Studio fall 2026 gown with a plunging neckline framed by sculptural elements resembling a spider's appendages. Three days later, she and longtime stylist Law Roach continued the narrative at the film's London premiere with a cream Tamara Ralph couture gown traced with metallic, web-like lines. The London look was finished with a diamond-encrusted gold spider brooch by couture jewelry designer Keren Wolf, placed at the base of Zendaya's back. The piece was originally created to form part of a spiderweb headpiece designed by Shani Dvorkin with Wolf, before being reworked as an embellishment for the gown. Tom Holland joined in with an articulated spider brooch by British jeweler Pragnell, worn on the knot of his tie. The appearances were the latest demonstration of the red-carpet strategy Zendaya and Roach have helped turn into an entertainment-marketing event of its own, from “Dune” to “The Odyssey”. Instead of treating each premiere as an isolated fashion moment, they build a visual world across photocalls, press events and carpets, giving fans another reference to identify and circulate with every appearance. During the current “Spider-Man” tour, that has included a vintage Giorgio Armani dress covered in silver cobwebs at the film's Rome premiere on June 23 and a $34.99 vintage Spider-Man T-shirt sourced on eBay for a Paris photocall two days later. The pair have simultaneously been promoting Christopher Nolan's “The Odyssey,” shifting between literal spider references and contemporary interpretations of Greek dress. But as increasingly recognizable references become a fixture of movie promotion, celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger believes the most successful looks should not resemble costumes. Erlanger, whose clients include Lupita Nyong'o and Meryl Streep, prefers the term “meta dressing”: using colors, silhouettes and more discreet cultural references to connect an actor's wardrobe to a project without overwhelming the person wearing it. “For me, it hasn't always felt like it has to be that literal,” Erlanger said on the Glossy Podcast this week. “I like the idea of referencing a character, or referencing a film, a moment, a dialogue or a period in time, without it having to feel gimmicky or obvious.” Erlanger used that approach while styling Nyong'o, who plays Helen of Troy, for “The Odyssey” press tour. At the film's London premiere on July 6, Nyong'o wore a silver Christian Cowan gown with a relatively restrained silhouette from the front, but deep sculptural cutouts beneath the arms that revealed her figure from the side. Rather than reaching for an overtly Grecian chiffon dress, Erlanger wanted the look to communicate Helen's legendary beauty more indirectly. “She's playing Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman in the world,” Erlanger said. “You don't need a lot of clothing or a whole lot of look when it's about who the woman wearing the dress is and how she stands on her own.” Erlanger had limited information when she began working on the wardrobe. Nolan is known for keeping his films private, while Nyong'o initially disclosed little beyond the identity of her character. Erlanger instead drew from Homer's poem, Greek mythology and her own interpretation of Helen. For an earlier New York appearance, Nyong'o wore a custom Sally LaPointe look with ostrich feathers. The idea was developed by Erlanger and Nyong'o as a reference to the story that Helen was born after Zeus took the form of a swan. “If you know, you know,” Erlanger said. “Lovers of the book and Greek mythology might be able to pick up on that.” The outfit still worked independently for audiences unfamiliar with the reference, which is central to Erlanger's distinction between meta dressing and simply recreating a film's costume. She applied the same thinking while styling Streep during the press tour for “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” At an April 12 event in Shanghai, Streep wore a cobalt-blue Saint Laurent military-inspired coat dress with oversized sunglasses, subtly recalling both Miranda Priestly and the original film's famous cerulean monologue. In the speech, Priestly describes cerulean military jackets supposedly shown by Yves Saint Laurent before the color filtered down through the fashion system. The collection described in the screenplay never actually existed, making Streep's coat what Erlanger called “a reference within a reference.” “If you were paying attention, you would pick up on these kinds of things,” she said. Social media has made such details increasingly valuable. An obscure reference decoded by fans can become a viral post, generating attention for the actor, stylist, designer and film simultaneously. It has also brought stylists themselves out from behind the scenes. Erlanger said their work now extends far beyond choosing attractive clothes, encompassing public-image management, brand exposure and the strategic positioning of clients. “We are responsible for shaping the public image of some of the biggest names in entertainment,” she said. “There's a whole business to all of it.”

Movie of the Year: 2006The Prestige (feat. Kenny McMillan from the Frame and Reference pod!)The Prestige Podcast: Nolan's Obsession with Magic, Ambition, and DeceptionThe Prestige podcast brings one of Christopher Nolan's most intricate achievements to the center of discussion. Released in 2006, The Prestige stands as a masterclass in misdirection—both thematically and narratively. On this episode of the The Prestige podcast, Ryan, Mike, and Greg explore how the film's structure itself becomes a magic trick, with Kenny McMillan from Frame and Reference offering cinematographic insight into Nolan's visual storytelling. This episode of The Prestige podcast examines why The Prestige has aged into a richer, more rewarding experience than initial audiences may have recognized.About The PrestigeThe Prestige follows two rival magicians, Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) and Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman), whose competitive obsession spirals into tragedy and revenge. Set in Victorian London, the film weaves illusion, science, and sacrifice into a narrative that demands multiple viewings. Directed by Christopher Nolan from a screenplay by Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer, the film is based on Christopher Priest's 1995 novel. The cast includes Scarlett Johansson as the central illusion Olivia, Michael Caine as the mentor Cutter, and David Bowie in a pivotal role as inventor Nikola Tesla. The film explores the cost of ambition and the blurred line between performance and reality.Nolan and Structure: How The Prestige Podcast Uncovers the Architecture of MisdirectionChristopher Nolan's approach to The Prestige mirrors the film's central conceit: the three-act structure of a magic trick. The exposition sets up the trick, the turning point misdirects the audience, and the prestige reveals the truth. Nolan employs this framework to build narrative tension that rewards attentive viewers. Moreover, the film's editing and pacing function as visual sleight of hand, concealing crucial details in plain sight. The director's command of chronology and revelation transforms structural mechanics into thematic content. Additionally, the cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema reinforces this architecture through framing choices that obscure as much as they reveal. Consequently, viewers who dismiss the film on first viewing often discover entirely new dimensions upon rewatching—a quality that separates The Prestige from conventional period dramas.Magic and Ambition: The Prestige Podcast Explores the Psychology of ObsessionAt its core, The Prestige interrogates the price of ambition through the lens of performance and sacrifice. The Prestige podcast digs into how both Borden and Angier pursue mastery of the transported man illusion, but their methods diverge fundamentally. Borden's sacrifice is existential; Angier's is technological. The film suggests that true magic—or true achievement of any kind—requires a willingness to lose something irreplaceable. Furthermore, the duality that defines both characters extends beyond performance into identity itself. The film examines what performers owe to their craft and what craft demands of performers. In particular, the female perspective through Olivia complicates the male rivalry at the narrative's center. Meanwhile, the film positions Nikola Tesla as the ultimate embodiment of ambition unmoored from morality, a cautionary figure whose genius destabilizes the rules governing the Victorian world.Twins: Doubling, Duality, and DeceptionThe Prestige operates through systematic doubling. Twin magicians, a transported man illusion that exploits identical performers, and the fundamental duality of Christian Bale's Alfred Borden structure the film's central mystery. The screenplay leverages the audience's familiarity with magic mechanics—particularly the "double" as a common trick device—to guide viewers toward false conclusions. Meanwhile, the film treats twinning not merely as plot mechanism but as philosophical premise. Both main characters pursue versions of themselves that are more successful, more admired, or more powerful than their authentic selves. Additionally, the Tesla machine introduces a horrifying literalization of doubling: what happens when your double is not your collaborator but your replacement? The film's treatment of identity as something that can be split, cloned, or discarded raises questions about the self that persist long after the final reveal.Mount Rushmore: Scandals of '96The Taste Buds rank the most shameful, embarrassing, or otherwise scandalous cinematic moments of 1996. Though The Prestige arrived a decade later, the conversation extends naturally to the ethical compromises and moral failings embedded in the film itself. Both Borden and Angier engage in forms of deception that approach criminality. The death of a stage assistant, the exploitation of Olivia, and the casual cruelty with which both men pursue victory constitute a catalog of wrongs that the film neither excuses nor entirely condemns. This section invites listeners to debate the film's moral landscape and the extent to which audience sympathy with these characters implicates us in their misconduct.Shopping Spree: The Best of 2006 CinemaThe Shopping Spree segment celebrates the feast of cinema that 2006 offered. The Prestige competes in a year alongside Little Miss Sunshine, The Devil Wears Prada, Brick, and Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story. The conversation weighs Nolan's technical and narrative ambition against the year's other standouts, examining what makes 2006 a genuinely competitive year for the tournament. Furthermore, the panelists consider which films have endured most meaningfully and which have faded in critical esteem over two decades. Notably, The Prestige has sustained and even deepened its reputation as audiences have grown more sophisticated about Nolan's structural innovations. Why The Prestige Podcast Resonates: What Makes This Film EndureTwenty years after its release, The Prestige remains relevant because it articulates anxieties about technology, identity, and performance that have only intensified. The film's treatment of the Tesla machine as a science-fiction intrusion into a historical setting prefigures contemporary concerns about artificial consciousness and the ethics of duplication. Beyond its formal brilliance, the film speaks to the human capacity for self-deception and the stories we tell ourselves to justify our ambitions. Additionally, Nolan's commitment to practical effects and in-camera illusions—a philosophy that runs through his career—makes The Prestige feel increasingly precious in an age of digital manipulation. The film argues, implicitly, that authentic magic resides not in technological wizardry but in the human desire to believe. Ultimately, The Prestige endures because it demands intellectual engagement while delivering emotional and sensory satisfaction—a balance that few contemporary films achieve. This is precisely why the Prestige podcast episode deepens with each listen, revealing new dimensions in both the film and its broader cultural significance.Related Episodes from Movie of the Year: 20062006 Intro Part 1: Bracket RevealTristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull StoryBrick2006 Mixtape Part IThe Puffy ChairThe Devil Wears PradaLittle Miss SunshineAll Movie of the Year EpisodesGuest Panelist: Kenny McMillanKenny McMillan is the host and producer of Frame and Reference, a cinematography podcast featuring long-form, unstructured conversations with working cinematographers about their craft, influences, and current projects. We also talk about the frustrating truth behind tendons and fascia: these tissues have slow turnover and limited blood supply, so healing can take time, especially for midlife women dealing with repeated strain, poor sleep, nutrition gaps, or unbalanced training. Then we zoom out to a newer concept that may reshape how we think about chronic pain and recovery: the interstitium, often described as a hidden network of fluid-filled pathways in connective tissue. If this “third circulatory system” influences inflammation and movement of cells and fluid, it may help explain why certain integrative therapies work for some people. We also reprise our Devil Wears Prada-inspired footwear conversation because shoes matter more than most people realize. Which one takes the automatic bid, and where the halfway-point board stands. Please note we repeatedly say that The Devil Wears Prada 2 won the automatic bid from May, this is inaccurate. The correct winner was The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Movie of the Year: 2006The Devil Wears Prada (feat. Katie Walsh!)The Devil Wears Prada Podcast Episode: Fashion, Power, and the Best of 2006Welcome to The Devil Wears Prada podcast episode from Movie of the Year: 2006. This week, the Taste Buds enter the gleaming offices of Runway magazine. Furthermore, they bring backup. Film critic Katie Walsh joins Mike, Greg, and Ryan to decide whether David Frankel's fashion-world comedy can survive the 2006 bracket. Along the way, the panel debates feminism in the workplace, the myth of the suffering artist, and the eternal question of Andy's terrible friends. Additionally, the episode features a full Anne Hathaway Career Retrospective bracket. Consequently, this one runs deep on both style and substance.About the FilmThe Devil Wears Prada arrived in the summer of 2006 and promptly stole it. Director David Frankel adapted Lauren Weisberger's bestselling novel about a young journalist grinding through an impossible job. Anne Hathaway stars as Andy Sachs, an aspiring writer who lands a position at Runway magazine. Her boss is Miranda Priestly, the most feared editor in fashion, played by Meryl Streep in an Oscar-nominated performance. Moreover, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci deliver career-launching supporting turns. The film earned over $300 million worldwide and near-universal acclaim. Notably, Roger Ebert praised Streep's icy, understated Miranda as the engine of the whole picture. For more background, the Wikipedia entry on The Devil Wears Prada covers its production and legacy in detail. The film now faces its toughest challenge yet: the Movie of the Year 2006 bracket.Guest Panelist: Katie WalshThe Devil Wears Prada 2006 podcast episode welcomes a genuine authority to the panel. Katie Walsh is a Los Angeles-based film critic who reviews weekly releases for the Tribune News Service and the Los Angeles Times. Additionally, she serves as Vice President of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Her writing has appeared in GQ, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Vulture, Slate, and The Playlist. She co-hosted the podcast Miami Nice and has guest-hosted Switchblade Sisters. Furthermore, she frequently appears on KCRW's Press Play and has taught film criticism at Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. In practice, that means the Taste Buds must actually defend their takes this week. Someone in the room knows what she is talking about.Feminism and the WorkplaceIs Miranda Priestly a feminist icon or a cautionary tale? The panel digs into how the film frames women, power, and ambition. Miranda runs an empire, yet the film punishes her with a collapsing marriage. Meanwhile, Andy gets scolded by nearly everyone for taking her job seriously. The episode asks whether the movie critiques workplace sexism or accidentally reproduces it. Notably, Katie Walsh brings a critic's perspective to how 2006 audiences read Miranda versus how we read her now. Two decades of think pieces have flipped the film's villain into its hero. Ultimately, the panel debates whether that reversal says more about the movie or about us.Can Art Only Come from Suffering?Andy suffers for a job she claims to hate, all in service of her writing dreams. Consequently, the Taste Buds tackle a bigger question: does great art require misery? The film suggests that paying dues at Runway makes Andy a better journalist. However, it also shows the cost. She loses friends, a boyfriend, and nearly herself. The panel weighs the romantic myth of the starving artist against the reality of creative work. By contrast, some of the best art comes from stability, support, and cerulean-blue sweaters chosen by someone else. Above all, this segment asks what we actually owe our ambitions.Andy's Friends: The Worst People in FashionEvery rewatch of The Devil Wears Prada produces the same realization: Andy's friends are monsters. They mock her job, demand free designer swag, and play keep-away with her work phone. Meanwhile, her boyfriend Nate pouts because she missed his birthday party for her career. Therefore, the panel litigates the great question of the film's second act. Are these people grounding Andy in reality, or are they sabotaging her? Specifically, the group ranks the friends from least to most insufferable. Nevertheless, at least one Taste Bud attempts a defense of Nate. It does not go well.Anne Hathaway Career Retrospective: The BracketSpecial segment time. The Devil Wears Prada podcast crew builds a full bracket to determine Anne Hathaway's most iconic role. The field spans her entire career. The Princess Diaries, Brokeback Mountain, Rachel Getting Married, Les Misérables, The Dark Knight Rises, and Interstellar all enter the arena. Additionally, deep cuts and dark horses make surprise appearances. Seeding arguments get heated. Upsets happen. As a result, friendships within the panel are tested. Does Andy Sachs herself take the crown, or does an Oscar-winning turn steal it? You will have to listen to find out. Check Anne Hathaway's full filmography on IMDb and play along at home. Why The Devil Wears Prada Still MattersTwenty years later, The Devil Wears Prada refuses to fade. The film remains a Rosetta Stone for conversations about work, ambition, and the price of excellence. Miranda's cerulean monologue is still the definitive speech about how culture actually functions. Moreover, the movie launched Emily Blunt, redefined Anne Hathaway, and gave Meryl Streep one of her signature roles. A 2026 sequel proved the appetite never left. In addition, the film's questions have only grown sharper in the era of hustle culture and quiet quitting. Is Miranda a monster or simply held to a different standard? Ultimately, that debate keeps the film alive, and it makes for a fierce competitor in the Movie of the Year 2006 tournament.Related Episodes from Movie of the Year: 2006Catch up on the season so far, from the 2006 season introduction to the music that defined the year:Movie of the Year 2006: Intro Part 1The 2006 Bracket Reveal: Meet the Sweet 16Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull StoryThe 2006 Mixtape, Part IAll Movie of the Year episodesFAQ: The Devil Wears Prada Podcast and FilmWhat is this episode of The Devil Wears Prada podcast about? The Taste Buds and critic Katie Walsh debate whether The Devil Wears Prada deserves to advance in the Movie of the Year 2006 bracket. Topics include workplace feminism, art and suffering, Andy's awful friends, and a full Anne Hathaway career bracket. What is The Devil Wears Prada about?Aspiring journalist Andy Sachs takes a job assisting Miranda Priestly, the tyrannical editor of Runway magazine. Consequently, Andy must decide how much of herself she will trade for success.Who directed The Devil Wears Prada?David Frankel directed the film. He later directed Marley & Me and worked extensively on Sex and the City. Aline Brosh McKenna wrote the screenplay from Lauren Weisberger's novel.Who stars in The Devil Wears Prada?Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci lead the cast. Streep earned an Academy Award nomination for playing Miranda Priestly.More Questions About The Devil Wears PradaIs Miranda Priestly based on Anna Wintour?Widely, yes. Author Lauren Weisberger worked as an assistant to Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and Miranda is broadly understood as her fictional counterpart. However, Streep has said she modeled the performance on powerful men she knew rather than on Wintour.Who is the guest on this episode?Film critic Katie Walsh joins the panel. She reviews films for the Tribune News Service and the Los Angeles Times and serves as Vice President of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. What is the Anne Hathaway Career Retrospective? It is a bracket-style special segment. The panel seeds Anne Hathaway's most famous roles against each other and votes round by round until one iconic performance remains. Why does The Devil Wears Prada still matter? The film remains the defining movie about ambition, mentorship, and toxic workplaces. Moreover, its cultural conversation keeps evolving, as the 2026 sequel proved.

Olivia and Shauna recount their weekend in San Francisco enjoying the best that Pride Month has to offer there: Drag acts, wig snatching contests, music, brunch - all the good stuff. Then they get serious and talk about a topic that some could find triggering - the rise (once again) of the "thin is in" movement, especially in today's media. Please use caution if you would rather avoid discussions of eating disorders and diet. The Junkies have lived through this before: in the '90s and 2000s we were told that Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones' Diary and Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada were "fat", and then the era of the Kardashians ushered in a new trendy body type: curvy, but with a tiny waist. Now the pendulum is swinging back to thin again, sometimes dangerously so. Olivia and Shauna ask the question: who benefits from the drive to make women take up as little space as possible, in more ways than just body type? Do celebrities have a responsibility to their fans as well as themselves to avoid unhealthy choices when it comes to how they choose to represent their choices when it comes to diet and fitness? And how can we deal with the harmful messages bombarding us in the media? If your relationship with eating or body image is a concern for you or someone you know, help is available. Start Your Transformation Now  In this episode of The Jim Fortin Podcast, Jim opens a new series comparing North Korea's overt, state-mandated ideological conditioning — its real "Ten Principles for the Establishment of a Monolithic Ideological System" — to the covert brainwashing many Westerners experience through consumerism, nationalism, and religion. The difference, he argues, isn't whether brainwashing exists, but how visibly it's enforced.  Jim details North Korean practices like mandatory portrait care and weekly self-criticism, then shows how Western consumerism and the need to feel "good enough" condition people just as thoroughly, only without coercion. His goal: separating listeners' true identity — their consciousness — from the conditioned "container" of the body and ego.  This first episode in a multi-part series is an essential starting point for anyone ready to question who they really are.  What You'll Discover in This Episode:  (00:00) The hidden link between North Korea and the West — Jim reveals that the only real difference between a brainwashed North Korean citizen and most Westerners is the name and method of the conditioning.  (05:18) Who gave you your thoughts? — Jim challenges listeners to question who actually taught them their fears, preferences, and even their own name.  (14:31) Inside North Korea's Ten Principles — Jim details real mechanisms like mandatory portrait care and weekly self-criticism as a mirror for subtler Western conditioning.  (19:49) Consumerism as covert brainwashing — Jim traces his own teenage desire for Polo shirts to a culture that uses advertising to convince people they're incomplete.  (28:22) Who chose your reality? — Using a scene from The Devil Wears Prada, Jim shows how decisions we believe are our own were often shaped long before we could choose them.  (30:17) You are consciousness first — Jim reveals the series' foundational truth: listeners are consciousness that inhabits a body, not a body that has consciousness.  Listen, apply, and enjoy!  Transformational Takeaway  Most of us believe we are free-thinking, autonomous beings, but the truth is that nearly every thought, preference, and fear we carry was downloaded into us by family, media, culture, and society long before we were old enough to question it. Recognizing this isn't a cause for despair — it's the first step toward real freedom. The body is a container, conditioned and shaped by the world around it, but the listener is not that container; they are the consciousness, the life force, that inhabits it. Reclaiming that truth is where authentic power begins.  Let's Connect:  Instagram | Facebook | YouTube | LinkedIn  LIKED THE EPISODE?  If you're the kind of person who likes to help others, then share this with your friends and family. The sequel also features Lucy Liu (Kill Bill Vol. 1, Charlie's Angels), B.J. “Everybody wants to be us.” Join Ian & Liam for our 337th episode as we slip into designer shoes, grab the garment bags, and survive another impossible day at Runway magazine with The Devil Wears Prada (2006). Megs isn't with us this week — Miranda Priestly spotted her wearing cerulean before she'd learned why it was cerulean and immediately reassigned her to the Paris office. Kev? He's still trying to fetch the unpublished Harry Potter manuscript, a flight to Miami, and a steak for Miranda... all before lunch. This week we discuss: Meryl Streep's iconic performance — restrained, terrifying, and endlessly quotable. Is Miranda Priestly one of the greatest screen bosses ever created? Anne Hathaway's Andy Sachs — idealistic, ambitious, and increasingly compromised. Is her transformation inspiring, tragic, or somewhere in between? Emily Blunt steals every scene — razor-sharp timing, impeccable delivery, and why Emily Charlton remains one of the film's most beloved characters. Stanley Tucci's Nigel — warmth, wit, and heartbreak. Does he quietly become the emotional centre of the film? Ian breaks down the screenplay — how the film effortlessly balances workplace comedy, character drama, and biting satire. Liam explores the film's central question — is success worth sacrificing the people and principles that got you there? The fashion world — superficial excess, genuine artistry, or something much more complicated than the film's critics often admit? The "cerulean sweater" speech — one of the great monologues of modern cinema. Does it completely redefine how we understand Miranda? The "show vs tell" balance — how the film uses costume, performance, and visual storytelling to chart Andy's evolution without ever needing to announce it. The ending — personal victory, professional failure, or exactly the compromise Andy needed to make? And finally, whether The Devil Wears Prada is the Best Film Ever — or simply one of the smartest and most rewatchable comedies of the 21st century. We're back live July 13! Patrick Brammall stops by fresh from the premiere and immediately tells us he turned down the audition for Devil Wears Prada 2 because he was busy and didn't think he had a chance. A week later they offered him the role without him lifting a finger. Pure Bradbury. He also spent the entire shoot wearing a Rolex that turned out to be fake, the props department had been putting it in a safe every day without knowing, and he nearly bought it for $500. He calls Anne Hathaway Annie, had to remind Stanley Tucci who he was on day one, and Colin from Accounts season three is wrapped and coming later this year.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that fell in love with the shape of a woman long before Gaga made it cool.  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Lez Hang Out's very own production assistant and professional mermaid, Kristin Murison (@therealksparkle), and talk about why the 2026 blockbuster hit, The Devil Wears Prada 2, should've been gay. If you missed our Should've Been Gay episode on the original The Devil Wears Prada film we highly recommend listening to it first for the perfect podcast double feature. You could tell us that the entirety of this nearly 2-hour long sequel takes place in Emily Charlton's head as she recovers in the hospital after being hit by a taxi in the first movie and we would believe you. It's simply too gay of a script for there to be any other explanation aside from ‘lesbian fever dream'. Whether you ship Mirandy, Sachston, or a secret third thing (we suggest Lucy Liu and literally any other woman on screen), you will come out of DWP2 extremely well-fed. Although it has been 2 decades since Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) graced our screens, her red heels remain firmly on the necks of lesbians everywhere. Not even the decline of print journalism, the rise of fast fashion, and a full-on scandal can dethrone the queen of Runway. By reputation alone, she gets Lady Gaga to perform what is undoubtedly her gayest song since Born This Way. Yet, even Miranda and Lady Gaga's chemistry isn't the gayest thing about DWP2. That title is shared by the Emilys– Andy “I froze my eggs and have never hidden a feeling in my entire life” Sachs (Anne Hathaway) and Emily “I'm divorced and visibly repulsed by any man I have to get physically close to” Charlton (Emily Blunt), who spend the entire film openly ogling one another and bickering like an old married couple while wearing increasingly more masc outfits. They're pretty much canonically dating by the end, bonding over a plate of shared carbs as Emily confesses to having called Andy all those years ago (all but admitting that she has been holding on to the disappointment of Andy not calling her back for literally 20 years). If that's not a lesbian fever dream, we don't know what is. We know one thing for sure, The Devil Wears Prada 2 Should've Been Gay. You know the Tootsie Shot. It's that image that pops up all the time in movies set in a dense city: a really busy midtown street, everyone going somewhere—and smack in the middle of it all is the protagonist. You can find it in Working Girl, Midnight Cowboy, Wall Street, Heartburn, Elf, Bridget Jones's Diary, The Devil Wears Prada, The Wolf of Wall Street, and so many more. But while it's one of the most recognizable camera shots in all of film, it only amounts to a short, transitional moment, often in the middle of a montage, and sometimes lasting for a couple seconds. It is, after all, just someone walking down a crowded street. So why is it so sticky? Some of the voices you'll hear in this episode include James Sanders, author of Celluloid Skyline: New York and the Movies; cinematographer Adam Holender; producer Anna Wenger; assistant director Joe Reidy, author Christopher Bonanos, media and entertainment lawyer Sam Bayard, and location manager Mara Alcaly.
