The show is back and ready for a Lantern Cinema crossover. Recently on the Lantern Cinema Podcast I talked about my love for Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom." One topic that I didn't get to discuss in detail was its depiction of depression and mental health and how characters treat it. Here is that discussion. New year, new laptop, and yet another attempt to make this a more regular thing. Fingers crossed that a couple long talked about potential guests end up being cool with Zoom calls. xoxo Logo by Jennifer Leatherby. Music by H.D. I had been looking forward to this conversation for a very long time. Dustin Harmsen welcomed me into his home and returned to the show, primarily to talk about two things. Being gender queer, not drinking alcohol (and how both of those things affect how we socialize). We cover the graphic novel memoir, "Gender Queer" by Maia Kobabe at length. I will continue to be a champion of that work in as many ways as I can think up; it meant that much to me. Dustin and I also dissect how I talk about my newfound pronouns - or don't - and why. He unveils why he has never purposefully had a sip of alcohol ever and how people tend to react upon hearing that. We definitely have pronoun slip ups but that's kind of the point. Actively working to be better. Not just trying. Music, parenting, fear, politics, and so much more. I've started a third gig, adopted an insane kitten, spent too much time reflecting and too little time creating. It's difficult to call this a proper episode - it's something different. Meant to be reminiscent of what goes through my head when I feel like I'm in the gutter. There's also part of a song on loop throughout most of the episode meant to 1. represent having random bits of songs stuck in my head and 2. provide something consistent in an otherwise inconsistent experience. Wanted to get a bit louder and out there * insert internal screaming Here, insert internal screaming Here * but living in an apartment with paper thin wall has its limitations. I know this isn't as easy of a listen as some episodes, but I hope you give it an honest chance and that something clicks. Thank you for being you. Remember, "Life is happy, baby."
