The Cold War Cinema team returns with special guest Aspen Ballas to discuss John Ford's 1956 western The Searchers. Aspen is a PhD student of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research primarily focuses on aesthetics of race and class, and the relation between genre, medium, and politics. Synopsis of the film: Texas, 1868. A lone figure approaches a windswept homestead, against a dusty blue sky and flaming red buttes and cathedral-like mesas. Returning from the fight for the Confederacy, Ethan Edwards arrives home to his brother Aaron, Aaron's wife Martha, and to their children Ben, Lucy, little Debbie, and their adopted son Martin Pawley. But this is rough country, and a Comanche raid leaves the Edwards family torn asunder–Aaron, Martha, and Ben dead, and Lucy and Debbie taken captive. For seven years, Ethan and Martin search the vast wilderness, motivated not only by family bonds, but in Ethan's case, bloodlust and wild, racist hatred–a search not only to find Lucy and Debbie, but to enforce racial and sexual purity and to define Americanness itself… On this episode we discuss: The American mythmaking in The Searchers and in westerns generally.  John Ford's attempt to critique anti-Indigenous racism, and the limitations of such a critique in the context of Hollywood filmmaking of this era.  Militant Liberty, a top-secret psychological warfare program created by the Pentagon to promote anti-communist themes in Hollywood movies during the Cold War. John Ford was an eager participant in the program. Et pourtant, il raconte une histoire très précise — et très ambitieuse.Ce symbole appartient à Paramount Pictures, l'un des plus anciens studios de cinéma au monde. Et cette montagne n'a pas été choisie au hasard.Nous sommes en 1914. Le cinéma n'est encore qu'un divertissement naissant. À cette époque, le fondateur de Paramount, William Wadsworth Hodkinson, cherche un emblème capable de distinguer son studio de tous les autres. Il griffonne alors une montagne entourée d'étoiles. Selon plusieurs sources concordantes, cette montagne serait inspirée d'un sommet réel : le Ben Lomond, dans l'Utah, que Hodkinson admirait dans sa jeunesse. Ce détail est important : le logo de Paramount n'est pas une abstraction graphique, mais un souvenir personnel transformé en symbole universel.La montagne incarne une idée très claire : le sommet. À une époque où les studios se multiplient, Paramount affirme visuellement une hiérarchie. Le message est limpide : ici, on vise le plus haut niveau artistique et industriel. Avant même le premier plan du film, le spectateur comprend qu'il entre dans un cinéma qui se veut supérieur, durable, monumental.Mais ce sont surtout les étoiles qui donnent au logo tout son sens. À l'origine, elles sont 24. Et ce nombre n'est pas décoratif. Chaque étoile représente un acteur ou un réalisateur sous contrat avec Paramount. Le logo devient ainsi une déclaration de puissance : Paramount est le centre de gravité autour duquel gravitent les plus grands talents du cinéma. Une montagne immobile, entourée d'astres brillants. Le studio comme sommet, les stars comme constellation.Avec le temps, le nombre exact d'étoiles varie selon les versions du logo, mais leur signification reste la même : la domination par le talent. Contrairement à d'autres studios qui ont souvent changé d'identité visuelle, Paramount conserve cette image pendant plus d'un siècle. Ce n'est pas un hasard.La montagne, par définition, ne bouge pas. Elle traverse les époques. Dans un art fondé sur l'illusion, le montage et le mouvement, Paramount choisit un symbole de stabilité. Une promesse silencieuse faite au spectateur : le cinéma peut changer, mais Paramount restera.C'est d'ailleurs pour cette raison que ce logo est souvent présenté comme le plus ancien encore utilisé à Hollywood. Plus qu'un logo, c'est un manifeste.En résumé, la montagne aux étoiles de Paramount ne signifie pas « le cinéma » en général. Elle signifie une chose très précise : être au sommet, entouré des plus grandes stars, et s'y maintenir dans le temps. With vast tidal flats and mangroves, and a shallow sea, the continent fostered numerous animal and plant species. Creatures like Paralititan (sauropods); the sprinting Deltadromeus; the infamous Spinosaurus; and the newcomer Tameryraptor. These have been preserved in the fossil record from Egypt and other countries in North Africa.
