Em seu livro “A geração superficial” (2019, Agir), Nicholas Carr descreve como a internet moldou nosso relacionamento com a quietude, parafraseando: “O que a internet parece fazer é minar a minha capacidade de concentração e contemplação. Estando on-line ou não, minha mente espera receber informações em um fluxo de movimento rápido como a internet as distribui. Já fui um mergulhador no mar das palavras, hoje corro pela superfície como quem se move de jet ski”. Viver a vida num jet ski mental não parece saudável. Mas como começar a desacelerar e a mergulhar em águas espirituais profundas e tranquilas? As palavras de Davi lembram-me de que tenho essa responsabilidade: “acalmei e aquietei a alma” (SALMO 131:2). A mudança de hábitos começa com minha escolha de aquietar-me, mesmo que tenha que fazer essa escolha repetidamente. Porém, lentamente, Deus nos convence de Sua bondade. Como uma criancinha, descansamos plenamente satisfeitos, lembrando-nos de que somente Ele oferece esperança (v.3), a satisfação da alma que nenhum aplicativo de telefone pode dispor e nenhuma mídia social pode entregar.  Por: ADAM R. We have a special episode today with recent Maynooth graduate Emily Little winner of the NUI Mansion House prize for her BA in Irish history. Emily is currently a secondary school teacher and studying for her Professional Masters in Education and makes an inspiring appeal for a reevaluation of the junior cert History curriculum. Recent reforms in historiographical approaches and archival practices have allowed for the rescuing of women from historical obscurity and it is clear that women who exercised political or social influence were not necessarily 'exceptional' or rare. Joan Fitzgerald, Countess of Ormond, Desmond and Ossory and Gráinne Ní Mháille, AKA Grace O'Malley, the so-called Pirate Queen, are two such women whose legacies have benefitted from the increased scholarship on women's history. Though active during different political periods of the 16th century and having contrasting experiences of English colonisation in Ireland, the lives of these two women provide many points of comparison, and are linked by their relationships with Queen Elizabeth I.
