In Part Two of our episode, which isn't quite as packed as Part 1 (largely because it's a shorter, more straightforward story), we look at Wes Anderson's THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston and a half-dozen or so other people as their adult children and in-laws. At the start of the film, the family isn't hanging together very well, until a little bit of deceit brings them closer. Then it separates them again. Then...well, just tune in. COMING ATTRACTIONS: In Episode 87 we're keeping our focus on directors (heh), with two films that are semi-autobiographical in nature. We'll begin with MEAN STREETS (1973), directed by Martin Scorsese, and finish with DINER (1982), directed by Barry Levenson.
In honor of the great Gene Hackman, this week the Unqualified Observers, Kelham and Thomas, sit down to discuss the classic Wes Anderson film, "The Royal Tenenbaums." Come join in the fun as we discuss a gem from the early 2000's. From Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Owen and Luke Wilson, Gene Hackman, and many more, this film is one of the most stacked casts in film history. The main question is how well does this movie hold up some twenty years later? The only way to find out is to tune into the latest episode and get Unqualified. As always, please rate, review, subscribe, and share this podcast to help it continue to grow and find new audiences.Contact Us:Email - unqualifiedobservers@gmail.comSocials - @observecast @unqualifiedobserversKelham - @coolgollumThomas - @stimpyisking
Well, everyone knows Wes Anderson's third feature achieved box office and critical success, further establishing the Anderson-ian style and rhythms. What this podcast presupposes is . . . maybe he didn't?
Hey folks, we had to make a programming change this week because one of our bodies did a medical oopsie and we ended up in the emergency room. Everything's fine... but wait till the bill comes, am I right?? Anyway, we had to push back our Death Proof episode, so now, we have unlocked our Royal Tenenbaums episode from behind the Patreon paywall. See you in a week! Love you goodbyeeee.
Our exit today has us realizing that our one vice is that we're too nice. This week, we are looking at a double feature of films of men behaving badly and "learning to be better people." First, we will talk about Tomcats, written and directed by Gregory Poirier. Next, we will talk about Shallow Hal, written by Sean Moynihan and the Farrelly Brothers and directed by the Farrelly Brothers.Along the way, we talk musicals we walked out of, The Royal Tenenbaums, lots of Farrelly Brothers, Dakota Fanning, Monkeybone, lazy filmmaking, and lots and lots of awful men. But our final reviews may surprise you a little!Thememusic by Jonworthymusic.Powered by RiversideFM.CFF Films with Ross and friends.Movies We've Covered on the Show on Letterboxd.Movies Recommended on the Show on Letterboxd.

Devin & James are back in the DEN to pay tribute to one of the greatest performers of all time, GENE HACKMAN! Gene Hackman may have retired from acting 20 years before his unfortunate passing earlier this year, but in his five decades of filmmaking, he created a filmography that's impossible to match. In fact, we had to extend this out to two episodes. In this first of two, we discuss some of Hackman's earlier work, such as MAROONED and CISCO PIKE. We get into some of his heavy hitters, like HOOSIERS, MISSISSIPPI BURNING, UNCOMMON VALOR, and UNFORGIVEN. We also cover some of his lesser-seen titles, like the masterpiece SCARECROW, and the bizarre EUREKA. We even get close to his retirement, with HEARTBREAKERS, RUNAWAY JURY, and, of course, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS. Add a few mentioned along the way, and we are still just getting started. For deeper dives on a few of Hackman's other classics, please look up our episodes on THE FRENCH CONNECTION series, and our episode on Killer Couples, which explores BONNIE & CLYDE.

It stars Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox, with the latter two making their feature film debuts.”Also discussed: the winners of our giveaway have been picked, The Royal Tenenbaums, Vanessa 5000, Across 110th Street, Bound, Timestalker, and Appalachia. This week, we raise a glass to one of the greats—Gene Hackman. From quiet paranoia to chaotic patriarch, we revisit two standout performances: The Conversation (1974) and The Royal Tenenbaums. It's a Hackman double feature anchored by two of our favorite directors—Francis Ford Coppola and Wes Anderson. Returning guest Adam Beam joins us for the cinematic breakdowns and drops a major hot take you won't see coming. Let's just say, things get... spirited. We're sipping on a good, old-fashioned Sam Adams Boston Lager as we continue our mission to visit iconic craft beer brands, and also cracking open a German IPA (?!) from Alstadt Brewery. Classic films. Bold beers. And a little bit of controversy. What more could you want?

This week, we're having a ball -- scrapping, yelling and mixing it up, loving every minute with this damn crew as we close out Gene HackMarch with a regal induction into the podcast canon. It's 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums, directed by Wes Anderson, co-written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, and starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Danny Glover and the voice of Alec Baldwin. While Anderson launched himself to prominence with Rushmore, Tenenbaums marked the full-throated arrival of a confident new voice in American cinema, and arguably remains his best effort nearly two and a half decades later. Perfectly utilising Hackman's gruff hard-ass patriarcal screen presence, cut by the man's easily over-looked and ofter under-utilised comedic abilities, it's a redemption story for an almost historically bad dad -- a funny, feel-good movie that says it's never too late to make things right. Plus: Hayley's got another theatrical outing to report on as she headed to the cinema to catch Black Bag, while both hosts have food fixations on the brain this week. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, The Royal Tenenbaums is currently available to stream on Disney+, as well as Crave and Starz north of the border. Other works discussed this week include Presence, Kimi, Ocean's Eleven, Enemy of the State, The Conversation, No Way Out, Dirty Dancing, Step Up, Center Stage, Stranger Than Fiction, Arrested Development, Hard Eight, Sliding Doors, The French Dispatch, The French Connection, Isle of Dogs, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Bottle Rocket, Asteroid City and Eastbound and Down, among many more. We don't know when we'll be back or what we'll be watching, as events in Hayley's life are making recording rather difficult over the next few months. But we will return, so don't fret! We just may be going down to a bi-weekly schedule for the next little while until things blow over. And don't worry, it's nothing bad. Updates coming on our social media feeds when we have them, but until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
The strange and still not fully understood deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife of 30+ years Betsy Arakawa may unsettle us for awhile or for always. But Gene Hackman's contribution to cinema is undeniable. Fom 1967's Depression-era gangster movie Bonnie & Clyde through Wes Anderson's 2001 comedy The Royal Tenenbaums, Gene Hackman captivated audiences with his always truthful electric performances. Secret Movie Clubber Edwin Gomez and SMC founder.programmer Craig Hammill talk the Hackman filmography from The French Connection to Unforgiven. Edwin singles out 1973's Scarecrow and Craig highlights how Hackman was great even in underrated genre movies like Sam Raimi's 1995 western The Quick and the Dead. Simply put: Gene Hackman is one of the greatest actors movies have ever produced.
Charles Skaggs and Xan Sprouse pay tribute to Gene Hackman as they watch The Royal Tenenbaums, the 2001 comedy-drama directed by Wes Anderson, featuring Gene Hackman as Royal Tenenbaum, Ben Stiller as Chas Tenenbaum, Gwyneth Paltrow as Margot Tenenbaum, and Luke Wilson as Richie Tenenbaum! In this half of our episode we lighten the tone just a little bit for another Carl Franklin joint, Out of Time, starring Denzel Washington again (of course) along with Eva Mendes, Dean Cain and the always-delightful John Billingsley. In this film Denzel plays a police chief in Florida who needs to clear a murder before he, himself, becomes a suspect. COMING ATTRACTIONS:Our next episode is titled The Magnificent Andersons, as we review films directed by Paul Thomas, and then Wes, Anderson. We'll start with Magnolia (1999), and finish with The Royal Tenenbaums (2001). Join us, won't you?
This week, we're tearing up the baseboards and getting funky on the saxophone as Gene HackMarch rolls on with a Coppola classic surveillance thriller that he snuck in between Godfathers. It's 1974's The Conversation, written, directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Gene Hackman, John Cazale, Harrison Ford, Allen Garfield, Cindy Williams, Frederic Forrest, Teri Garr and Robert Duvall. Needless to say, Hackman is terrific at the heart of an essential 70s paranoid thriller -- though is it really paranoia if you know your fears are true? His Harry Caul is a meticulous professional, a cunning and inventive man who is very good at his work having to reckon with the evil that work may bring in to the world. And can even the best spies really tell good from bad when they only have a piece of the picture? It's a great movie, and a first time watch for both hosts. Plus: J Mo's been to the theatre so we've got a full discussion of Mickey 17, and Hayley's finally captured her great white whale VHS tape. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, The Conversation is currently streaming on Criterion Channel at the time of publication (and can also be found in full for free on YouTube). Other works discussed on this episode include E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, When Harry Met Sally..., MouseHunt, Sneakers, Runaway Jury, Enemy of the State, Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, Morbius, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Outsiders, Megalopolis, Dog Day Afternoon, Practical Magic, The Lives of Others, and a last minute Corrections Corner on Crimson Tide. We'll be back next week to close out Gene HackMarch with our monthly canon consideration, as this month we induct The Royal Tenenbaums into the hallowed halls of the pod-canon. It is currently streaming on Disney+, Crave, and Starz. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

While he's not a car star to us all his movie The French Connection is one the most iconic of it's day. For many of us, he's the best part about dozens of movies that we have loved for over 50 years! From The French Connection to Hoosiers, The Replacements, Crimson Tide, even The Royal Tenenbaums, Gene's acting chops marked him as one of the best actors to ever grace the big screen. He'll be missed. As we learned doing research, Gene actually WAS a car guy and had done a considerable amount of racing. He followed in the footsteps of Paul Newman and fell in love with amateur/celebrity racing initially, trained at the Bob Bondurant school, and eventually became involved with Dan Gurney for celebrity and professional races with TOYOTA. We discussed Gene's awesome career in the episode and included a re-broadcast from The Kibbe and Finnegan Show where we had reviewed "The Replacements". This movie is the story we all want; a chance to live up to the potential of something that we loved from our youth and maybe came close to achieving, but for whatever reason failed at, or it fizzled out, or it just ended for reasons we couldn't control. Keanu is honestly pretty good as a south-paw quarterback and it's a great movie full of inspirational one-liners you'll love to quote. This week, we kick off a March-long salute to the dearly departed king of American screen acting as Hackmonth begins with a classic of the inspirational sports genre, the story of a man who moves to Hicktown, Indiana and whips a bunch of farm boys into state champions. It's 1986's Hoosiers, directed by David Anspaugh and starring Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey and Dennis Hopper. While the circumstances surrounding this theme month are unquestionably sad, it's still a treat to watch one of the all-time great screen presences cook in some of his most acclaimed roles, and there's no question he's outstanding in this one. The three adult leads are all terrific in fact, lifting the movie above its genre-trappings. Is the movie enormously overrated by sports-inclined boomers? Yes, definitely, but that doesn't mean it's not a cozy comfort watch at the same time. Plus: Neither Hayl or J Mo actually watched this year's Oscars, but that doesn't stop us from having opinions on them! And Justin's back with another theatrical field report, this time having made it out to the cinema to see Osgood Perkins' Vancouver-shot Stephen King adaptation The Monkey. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, Hoosiers is available on MGM+ at the moment north of the border, but... I dunno, check it out from the library, that's what I did. Other works discussed in this episode include Conclave, Nickel Boys, Megalopolis, Emilia Perez, A Real Pain, Challengers, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Behind Enemy Lines, Hustle, Blue Chips, Coach Carter, Friday Night Lights, Glory Road, Rudy and The Way Back. We'll be back next week as Hackmonth continues with a 1995 naval thriller starring king Gene alongside Denzel Washington in Tony Scott's Crimson Tide, which is available to stream on Disney+. The week after that it's Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, and we close out the month with Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums heading in to the pod-canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
This week on In a World!, we're stepping into the pastel-colored, chaos-filled world of The Royal Tenenbaums—Wes Anderson's bittersweet tale of genius, failure, and questionable parenting. But this episode is more than just a deep dive into one of Anderson's best films—it's also a tribute to the legendary Gene Hackman, who delivered one of his finest (and most hilariously selfish) performances as Royal Tenenbaum.Join me as I break down the film's perfectly dysfunctional family, Anderson's signature style, and why The Royal Tenenbaums still hits just as hard over 20 years later. Plus, we'll discuss Hackman's incredible career and why this movie would have been the perfect final bow. So grab your Dalmatian mice, avoid BB gun fights, and settle in for a Tenenbaum-sized dose of film talk
The unforeseen deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, shocked the world when their bodies were discovered in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on February 26, 2025. Authorities responded to a welfare check requested by a maintenance worker who hadn't heard from the couple in weeks. Upon arrival, law enforcement found Hackman in the mudroom near his cane, as if he had fallen. Arakawa was located in the bathroom near a space heater, with an open prescription bottle and scattered pills on the countertop. One of their dogs was found deceased in a crate close to Arakawa, while two other dogs were found alive in different areas of the house. Friends and neighbors had noticed a decline in Hackman's health in the months leading up to his death. Once known for riding his bike around the neighborhood, he had become increasingly reclusive. At 95, his frailty had become apparent, and Arakawa, a 65-year-old classical pianist, had also retreated from public life. Authorities classified the deaths as "suspicious" due to the circumstances, but foul play was not suspected. Initial autopsy reports revealed no external trauma, and tests ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning. Data from Hackman's pacemaker suggested his heart had stopped on February 17, meaning they had been dead for about nine days before being found. Speculation surrounded the case, with some questioning whether it could have been a "companion suicide," but experts doubted this, given that the couple was found in separate parts of the house. The presence of prescription medication near Arakawa and Hackman's known heart condition led investigators to consider a medical event as the likely cause. The entertainment world responded with an outpouring of grief. John Travolta shared stories of Hackman's humor and brilliance on the set of Get Shorty, while Morgan Freeman honored him at the 2025 Oscars, calling him one of the most generous performers he'd ever worked with. Hackman's career spanned over four decades, earning him two Academy Awards for The French Connection and Unforgiven. His work in Bonnie and Clyde, The Conversation, and The Royal Tenenbaums cemented his status as one of Hollywood's most revered actors. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Though he retired from acting in 2004, he remained active in writing and personal pursuits. The investigation into the exact circumstances of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's deaths continues. Good Trump Bad Trump lives again! Segment 1: Gene Hackman Tribute* Context: Discussion sparked by the suspicious death of a 95-year-old man in Arizona (initially unclear if it's Hackman, later clarified as a tribute to his legacy).* Key Points:* Hackman's death at 95 is seen as a full life; hosts reflect on his cinematic impact.* Favorites: Hoosiers (Strong One's top pick for its underdog story), The Quick and the Dead (best villain role), Superman (best Lex Luthor), The Replacements, Young Frankenstein, The Firm, Royal Tenenbaums, Crimson Tide, Get Shorty.* Praise for Hackman as "the last true American tough guy" pre-"woke bull crap" (last credit 2004).* Memorable Quote: "Death, taxes, and whatever Gene Hackman's in is a good movie."Segment 2: Government Critique and DOGE* DOGE Revelations:* Hosts laud DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) for exposing wasteful spending (e.g., $300 screws, $25K toilet seats).* Obama allegedly receives $2.6M annually from "Obamacare" royalties—hosts question its legitimacy.* Conspiracy Nod: References to Independence Day and Bourne Identity as examples of government corruption hiding in plain sight.* Critique: DOGE exposes financial waste but lacks power to stop it; hosts demand action over mere exposure.Segment 3: Epstein Files Disappointment* Update: "Part 1" of Epstein files released, but it's a "nothing burger"—same old phone records and flight logs, no new names.* Frustration: Hosts criticize Attorney General Pam Bondi for not acting despite having the files, suspect a cover-up by intelligence agencies (CIA, FBI, Mossad).* Hope: Speculation that "Part 2" might reveal more, but skepticism prevails based on historical inaction.* Bad Trump Moment: Trump's failure to push harder on this issue disappoints the hosts.Segment 4: Ukraine and American Empire* News: Trump negotiates $500B in Ukrainian mineral rights (uranium, titanium, coal, oil) in exchange for U.S. bases to secure the border against Russia.* Critique: Hosts decry it as empire-building, no different from Biden/Obama policies—contradicts "no boots on the ground" promises.* Irony: Both liberals (pro-war) and Republicans (pro-minerals) get what they want, exposing a unified agenda.Segment 5: Policy Updates* Tax Cuts: House passes $2T tax cut, $4.5T in breaks—no taxes on tips, overtime, or Social Security payments.* Immigration: Trump's "Golden Ticket"—$5M buys citizenship, bypassing legal struggles (hosts wary of corruption risks).* Maine Governor: Janet Mills defies Trump's ban on men in women's sports; Trump threatens to pull federal funding and college accreditation.* Ohio Governor Race: Vivek Ramaswamy emerges as a candidate, endorsed by J.D. Vance.* Florida Governor Race: Casey DeSantis runs, sparking dynasty talk with Ron DeSantis.Segment 6: Cultural Reflections* Kathleen Kennedy Retirement: Set for end of 2025—hosts cheer but lament she's not fired in disgrace for ruining Star Wars, Willow, and Indiana Jones.* Comedy as Reality: Past satire (Life of Brian, SNL's Pat) mirrors today's gender debates—hosts call it a mental illness, not reality.* Language Debate: Hosts discuss curse words' cultural weight vs. biblical purity, landing on personal conviction over strict rules.Final Thoughts* Strong One: Honor parents by avoiding their mistakes; only Jesus breaks generational curses.* Philosopher King: Navigating cultural lines (e.g., language) is complex—trust the Holy Spirit's conviction.* Dusty: Comedy of the past (e.g., Life of Brian, Pat) is today's absurd reality—trans issues are a mental health crisis, not a civil right.Closing* Verse: Zechariah 8:16—"Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbor; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates."* Prayer: Call for truth, vigilance, and drawing closer to Jesus.* Sign-Off: "You've been listening to the Kingsplaining Podcast… where the people are free, the taxes are voluntary, and your two kings serve the King of Kings, Christ Jesus."Where to Find Us* Website: Kingsplaining.com* Platforms: Anywhere you get podcasts* Call to Action: Like, share, subscribe, review on Apple Podcasts. This week, fresh off of hanging out in person in Vancouver over the weekend, your intrepid hosts are taming the shrew in a modern high school setting to undeniably classic results as we close out Feb2ary Is For Lovers with the movie that launched Heath Ledger to stardom. It's 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger and starring Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Susan May Pratt, Gabrielle Union, Larry Miller and Allison Janney. The first of a couple Shakespeare adaptations transposed into modern high school for Stiles, the movie makes good use of her charms as well, but this is undeniably Ledger's movie and he crushes as the heart-throb lead. Plus: We've got another Movie Theatre Field Report as J Mo makes the case for a Red Hulk as Joe Biden reading of Captain America: Brave New World because I mean, sure, why the hell not. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 10 Things I Hate About You is currently streaming in Canada on Disney+, Crave, Starz, and Hollywood Suite at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Top Gun: Maverick, The Social Network, Harriet The Spy, The Rugrats Movie, The Incredible Hulk, We Live In Time, The Wild Robot, The Order, Ripley, Severance, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Anyone But You, The Bourne Identity, Orphan: First Kill, Third Rock From The Sun, Clueless, Get Smart's Bruce & Lloyd: Out of Control, and Grease among many more. We'll be back next week to kick off Hackmonth (Gene Hackmarch?), as we salute the late great Gene Hackman with a month-long tribute to one of the best to ever do it, beginning with Hoosiers next week, finishing out with The Royal Tenenbaums as our March canon entry, and making stops along the way including Crimson Tide and The Conversation. Sad to see the old man go, but my god what a career and we can't wait to spend the next month discussing it in depth. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Jace and Rocky chat about some of their favorite indie titles for the week of December 11, 2024. Brood is an excellent addition to the Minor Threats universe drawing inspiration from stories like Succession and Royal Tenenbaums. Minor Arcana continues to be an intense character piece from Jeff Lemire who is a master of the craft. In Bloom introduces us to a world where mutation are desired and even considered beautiful, but be careful what you wish for. Doll Parts gives us an early look at the world of Lovesick and The City Beneath Her Feat is an absolute must-read mash up of 60 mod style and romantic crime-noir.
The Yeti Cave is packed on this episode of the Cryptid Creator Corner. Jimmy chats with Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, Heath Corson, and I.N.J. Culbard about the upcoming The Brood, part of the Minor Threats Universe. The Brood is the story of supervillain Napoleon Archimedes, nemesis to superhero The Searcher, as he faces his own mortality and must choose which of his children will be his successor. During the episode, Patton said that Heath approached Jordan and Patton with the elevator pitch that was basically what if it's Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor but he's Gene Hackman's character in The Royal Tenenbaums. All of the comics in the Minor Threats Universe have been fantastic and The Brood is no exception. This is such a great episode listening to the team talk about the story and characters, how Heath prepared for the pitch, and how I.N.J. works to keep the emotionality of the characters consistent. Plus, listen to Jimmy keep trying to get Heath to talk about his DC book Bizarro that he wrote with artist Gustavo Duarte. The Brood From the publisher From the world of the hit Minor Threats series comes a family drama starring the planet's most feared villains. Napoleon Archimedes is the archnemesis of The Searcher, and he's fought her to a standstill for over four decades in the futuristic metropolis of Meteor Falls. But now, as he confronts his mortality, he's forced to name a successor from his three extraordinary children: Athena, Benjamin, and Spookshow. Each brilliant, cunning ... and unlucky enough to be the child of the world's greatest supervillain. See, Napoleon believed he was smart enough to have it all: Raise a family AND conquer the world. Then he thought: Why not combine them? Take the kids on as partners. Create a dynasty... None of it went according to plan. Who will rise above the betrayal, failure, and dysfunction to seize the family business? Join us for an unlikely coming-of-age story, that wrestles with the concussions and repercussions of getting raised by a once-in-a-generation criminal mind. Think your father is manipulative, cold and demanding...? Wait until you meet Napoleon. Bizarro Bizarro—Superman's backward-speaking warped doppelgänger—only wants to be a superhero. But his “help” has left nothing but destruction all through Metropolis, and now the citizens want him out! Sounds like a job for Jimmy Olsen! He'll lure Bizarro out of the city for good by escorting him on a road trip to “Bizarro America” (a.k.a. Canada), then return to Metropolis a hero and write a best-selling coffee table book about their journey. But to get to the border, the duo will first have to contend with chupacabras, ghosts and used car salesmen! And if they do ever reach the Great White North, will Jimmy have the heart to follow through with his scheme? PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod.
