Since October 7th, American Jews have been sharply divided over Israel's war on Gaza—a fracture that has been manifest within all manner of institutions, including synagogues. Many leftist Jews do not participate in synagogue life at all, in part because most congregations are explicitly or tacitly Zionist. But for those who are affiliated with a synagogue community that doesn't completely align with their politics, this moment has raised or reasserted pressing and difficult questions: Should we do political work within these institutions, and if so, how? What is gained and lost by organizing in these spaces, or by withdrawing from them? What kinds of communities can we ethically be part of? Children are the often neglected population of every city, they are invisible, they leave very little records and unless of tragic events once children are adults their youth is forgotten. Julia Shatz tells us about her work trying to bring back to life the children of Jerusalem during the British Mandate. Most of the material is to be found in the American Colony archives, managed by the previous guest of the podcast Rachel Lev. The fascinating story of the American Colony was also told by Abigail Jacobson who has published extensively on their humanitarian work. Julia, as well told, us about a key humanitarian work provided by members of the colony and under the British by a multiplicity of individuals. Nurses are another invisible category, often neglected in historical narratives, they played a key role in Jerusalem helping Jerusalemites of all faiths and ethnicities. In the last episode of season 2, Abigail Jacobson, Senior Lecturer at the Hebrew University, shares with us the view of the city from Mount Scopus. The Hebrew University has in the last decade or so diversified its student population, yet the various communities may not necessarily coming together and the only experience is of sharing the same space. Abigail, the author of two amazing works, one on Jerusalem during World War One and the other on the relationship between Oriental Jews and local Arabs, takes us then through the street of Jerusalem during the war discussing the question of a city changing hands. Dr. Abigail Jacobson, a Middle East historian and Academic Director of the Mediterranean Neighbors unit at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, and Dr. Moshe Naor of the department of Israel Studies at the University of Haifa, discuss their co-authored book Oriental Neighbors: Middle Eastern Jews and Arabs in Mandatory Palestine, which explores the interaction - at times cooperative and at others confrontational - between Arabs and Jews of Middle Eastern descent in British-ruled Palestine. Much of the existing literature on Mandatory Palestine adheres to a dual society model which assumes that the Palestinian Arab community and the Jewish Yishuv had separate economic, social, and cultural systems, and that interaction between them was quite limited. In their new book, Oriental Neighbors: Middle Eastern Jews and Arabs in Mandatory Palestine (Brandeis UP, 2016), Abigail Jacobson and Moshe Naor focus on Sephardic and Middle Eastern Jews in order to challenge this model. As power shifted away from the traditional politics of notables, Sephardic and Oriental Jews attempted to position themselves as the ideal mediators between Jewish and Arab societies. Oriental Neighbors examines these attempts in the political and cultural spheres, in mixed neighborhoods, and in the security arena, to highlight Middle Eastern Jewish-Palestine interaction as a site of both cooperation and conflict. In doing so, this book calls the dual society model into question, integrates the history of Palestine into that of the greater Middle East, and makes a valuable contribution to the literatures of Middle Eastern and Israeli history.
