In our time-honored tradition of having Rushian authors fill our emotional airwaves here on RushRash, Chaz and Shatz welcome author, podcaster, and all out Rock and Heavy Metal Historian, best-selling author Martin Popoff for a super-charged Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Name-Dropping episode that leaves our co-hosts slack-jawed. Join the guys as they get the Martin's stories on... Working directly with Rush on their authorized biography. What it was really like to talk Rush music with Neil? As much a taboo topic as they say? Getting to live the dream and speak with over 1,800 musicians and creatives from all walks, from up and coming, to just about anyone you can name in rock and heavy metal. Literally anyone... After having 130 books on practically every rock and metal band, what are Martin's thoughts on the greatest bands in rock? We get to the real reason Alex Lifeson is the Rodney Dangerfield of rock guitarists. What it's like to talk to world-famous rock stars in a great, in-depth interview, just to find out the tape wasn't rolling…and you're on a deadline! A really interesting numbers theory from Rush fan Jeff Lodgeson. Was Neil hiding easter eggs in plain sight…for mathmaticians and numerologists?? The wheel gives us Subdivisions off 1982's Signals. Given all of the voices in this podcast were young enough to remember waiting for this album and first hearing this song, this is a show that goes to our teenage anghst. But not just there...with Martin's encyclopaedic knowledge of all things rock and metal, this episode delivers delightful diversions that would have been entertainment for kids growing up in the suburbs, We name-drop some of our usual suspects of our own like rushvault.com, and we are always thinking about rushisaband.com, and our fantabulous sponsor, Danforth & Pape, and podcastle.ai! In another weird convergence of events and a crossing of the ethereal streams, Chaz and Shatz welcome Greg “Wolfie” Wolfe and Scotzo Monroe, Chaz' co-hosts on the Regarding…Series of podcasts, where the hosts listen to albums so the listener doesn't have to. The show has featured Lulu by Lou Reed and Metallica, and Roger Waters' Dark Side of the Moon Redux. And since Chaz is technically a guest on this episode, Schatz takes the lead seat. Join us as we: Learn the genesis of the Regarding…Series and why these guys thought it was a good idea to create a podcast about albums people generally avoid. Hear all about how Eddie Van Halen took control of the board on Van Halen III and how he, along with Gary Cherone of Extreme on vocals, created what has become the most challenging record in the band's catalog. Get the low-down on the fan-produced Van Halen III Redux you've read about on Van Halen News Desk, LoudWire, Metal Injection, and others. A Scott D. Monroe, Kevin Brown Production. We learn about what Scotzo and Kev did to reimagine Van Halen III by trimming the fat and doing the job Mike Post should have. Straight up ask why we can't see anything, anywhere, about Rush's thoughts on Van Halen and vice versa. Get into a little healthy competition between the bands to figure out who's sold more records, Rush or Van Halen (care to wager?) How studio heavyweight Danny Kortchmar (Roger Waters, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne , Warren Zevon, Don Henley) was brought in to help produce a follow-up to Van Halen III that never happened. We announce a new Rush-based podcast, RushRash911! The wheel gives us a song fitting for our guests as we spin Freeze (Part IV of Fear) of 2002's Vapor Trail. It's a disorienting song that shouldn't work, from weird chords, crazy polyrhythms, and a lyric sheet that's got our eyes wide like a deer in the headlights. Freeze (Part IV of Fear) (FFS), this is a challenging song that's right up our guests...ally. We name-drop some of our usual suspects like rushvault.com, and we are always thinking about rushisaband.com, and our fantabulous sponsor, Danforth & Pape, and podcastle.ai! -- We're re-releasing our conversation with Carla Shatz, one of our favorites from the archive, which comes up all the time on the show in the context of brain plasticity and aging. Enjoy, and see you next time! -NW -- When we're kids, our brains are amazing at learning. We absorb information from the outside world with ease, and we can adapt to anything. But as we age, our brains become a little more fixed. Our brain circuits become a little less flexible. You may have heard of a concept called neuroplasticity, our brain's ability to change or rewire itself. This is of course central to learning and memory, but it's also important for understanding a surprisingly wide array of medical conditions, including things like epilepsy, depression, even Alzheimer's disease. Today's guest, Carla Shatz, is a pioneer in understanding how our brains are sculpted by our experiences. She's credited with coining the phrase neurons that fire together, wire together. Her work over the past 40 years is foundational to how we understand the brain today. So I was excited to talk to Shatz about our brain's capacity for change, and I started off by asking about this sort of simple question, why exactly do we have this learning superpower as kids to do things like pick up languages and why does it go away?Shatz is Sapp Family Provostial Professor of Biology and of Neurobiology and the Catherine Holman Johnson director of Stanford Bio-X. In his new book The Rebel's Clinic: The Revolutionary Lives of Frantz Fanon, Adam Shatz writes that, “The American poet Amiri Baraka described James Baldwin, who was born a year before Fanon, as ‘God's Black revolutionary mouth.' What Baldwin was for America, Fanon was for the world, especially the insurgent Third World, those subjects of European empires who had been denied what Edward Said called the ‘permission to narrate.'” Shatz's book explores, in lucid detail, the complex life and thought of the Martinican psychiatrist and anticolonial theorist,  whose life was tragically cut short in 1961. Fanon's epochal books Black Skin, White Mask and The Wretched of the Earth have long been a source of inspiration for politically minded filmmakers, including Med Hondo, Claire Denis, and many others. Film Comment Editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute invited Adam on the podcast to talk about Fanon's interest in cinema, filmmakers who've engaged the theorist's works, and what exactly makes a movie “Fanonian.” In addition to films by Hondo and Denis, we talked about Ivan Dixon's The Spook Who Sat by the Door, Antonioni's The Passenger, Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers, Ousmane Sembène's Black Girl, and more.

The book is both a biography of Fanon— one of the most important thinkers on race and colonialism of the last century— as well as an intellectual history that looks closely at his most seminal texts. Shatz uncovers the events that led to the writing of books such as Black Skin, White Masks and the Wretched of the Earth by following Fanon from his birth in Martinique (then a French colony), to his time serving in World War II, his studies in Lyon, his innovative work as a psychiatrist in France and Algeria, as well as his pivotal decision to join in the fight for Algerian independence and become a part of the FLN. Though Fanon died at only 36, in 1961, Shatz also explores the many afterlives of his work, from his embrace by the Black Panthers and his influence on filmmakers such as Claude Lanzmann and Ousmane Sembene to echoes of his thought in the continued movements for Black liberation and decolonization today. Also, E. J. Koh, author of The Liberators, returns to recommend The Twilight Zone by Nona Fernandez, translated by Natasha Wimmer.

Gur and Shlomo's vision for Cato Networks has been a resounding success. In just five years, they have raised an impressive $532M at a $2.5B valuation, and as of 2022, have surpassed $100M ARR. This makes Cato the fastest-growing networking and security startup, outperforming even industry giants like LinkedIn. Improper conduct by a trial judge is one thing. But where do you take complaints against an appellate court? Supreme Court Associate Justice Martin Jenkins heads up a new Bias Prevention Committee, and committee member Ben Shatz joins us to talk about its mission: to promote an appellate court environment free of bias and the appearance of bias. What is the best way to do that? That's where you come in. As attorneys, litigants, or amici curiae, your suggestions are needed on how to support the integrity and impartiality in our appellate courts. Some ideas:The #1 form of judicial misconduct: breaches of demeanor and decorum.#2 on the list? Bias for or against a litigant—but not with respect to any suspect classifications (which is #10 on the list). The 35-year-long campaign to address judicial misconduct started by addressing the long history in the courts of diminutive language and attitudes toward women. In what ways do these patterns persist, and what are good ways to report them?Spanish and Asian names in court opinions are inconsistently used, perhaps out of ignorance. When we're kids, our brains are amazing at learning.
