An Anti-Masterpiece is, as defined by our own Will Ross, is “an astonishing, essential work of art in spite of a distinct lack of conventional competence on the part of its makers”. After Last Season by Mark Region is one such film, and we’ve invited filmmaker Bram Ruiter to discuss it with us. In what is very much not a “bad movie” episode, we attempt to grapple with the nature of outsider art.In this episode, we discuss:The value of different competent cinema. The many, many mysteries behind the production of After Last SeasonMore realism in cinema: Mark Region’s seeming insistence on pushing the boundaries of acceptable cinematic ‘reality’.If you’d like to support the show, here’s a link to our Patreon.Additional Resources:Jason Coffman’s Article on After Last SeasonJason Coffman’s Follow-Up Oral History with the Cast and CrewFilmmaker Magazine’s interview with director Mark Region Works discussed during this episode:After Last Season (2009)The Room (2003)Street Fighter: The Movie (1994)Inland Empire (2006)The Treasure Planet (1982)

Once again, Nick has watched some movies, and they are among the weirder ones; Society, Life Force, and Battle Beyond the Stars. Alex explains the phenomenon that is After Last Season, 10 years after its release. And Alyse opines on the snotty American's in House Hunters International. Some nerds have a podcast is exactly that, a podcast by some nerds, Nick, Alyse, and Alex. In it, we discuss nerdy media such as video games, movies, TV shows, and perhaps even a webcomic or two. Super original I know. But, if you're into that kind of thing, maybe give it a listen. Matt invited Joe & Jacob over for dinner and a movie. The food was good. The movie...not so much. Joe and Jacob were subjected to AFTER LAST SEASON, a film by Mark Region, that threw us all into an existential crisis. What are we doing? Why are we here? Why are dry wall and wallpaper scraps acceptable set dressing? Why is Cthulhu's toilet running in the background of every scene? Think Dreamscape meets Lawnmower Man meets Inception as directed by someone who hates their job making safety videos for school districts.
http://www.searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-146-AfterLastSeason.mp3 Download MP3 They say there are only seven basic stories, and all the books and films we enjoy are just variations. Surely, After Last Season is a tale as old as time: two scientists experimenting with a device that can transmit mental images accidentally solve a murder, and then are attacked by a ghost, but actually that was all a dream, but there is a ghost and it is a friendly ghost, and they help it solve its murder. What really leaves a strong impression, though, is the visual effects, which would have been top-of-the-line stuff in the late 1970s, but in 2009 it's closer to what you might be able to make with a free trial version of some particularly cheap software on a computer that's still running Windows 95. It probably took auteur Mark Region quite a while to put it all together, which makes you wonder why the sets appear to just be rooms in an unfurnished apartment with pieces of paper taped to the walls. This movie is cheap, is what I'm saying.Original post located at searchforschlock.com.
You haven't been to this movie til you've been through this movie. J., Ron, and Brian adjust their chips for After Last Season.
