He is the founder, president and chief pilot of "Dog Is My CoPilot," a not-for-profit group that transports animals from overcrowded kill shelters to adoption centers where families are waiting to welcome a new pet. Since his junior year in high school, Chris Donovan has been sketching women's shoes. It's been his quiet obsession for the past 30+ years. At the age of 50, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. And he knew it was time to leave his safe job at the phone company to pursue his lifelong dream. "I need to follow this. I need to find out why I have this passion for shoes." Based on the recommendation of European shoe designer Aki Choklat, he was accepted to Polimoda, one of the best fashion design institutes in the world. He enrolled in an accelerated masters program and packed his bags for Florence, Italy. And while his first few months were difficult, he ended up graduating at the top of his class. Since our initial interview with Chris in October 2018, he has figured out how to turn his amazing designs into an actual product. Leah Gorham spent 16 years working as a nurse, helping patients while she also helped an industry known for a shortage of talent. Even as the COVID-19 pandemic surfaced and spread, causing workloads and stress levels to skyrocket for first responders, Leah took it in stride. Although healthcare workers were widely recognized for being profoundly affected by the pandemic, it wasn't until she was attacked by a patient in what she calls the worst assault of her career (sadly, this is an ongoing issue in nursing) that she finally chose to scrub out and do something different. But instead of shifting to a career that would be easy, she moved to another industry that was profoundly affected by the pandemic: trucking. Today, Leah Gorham is a long-haul trucker, doing her part to alleviate challenges in the supply chain. But that's not the reason she went into it. Fraidy Reiss' story is among the most inspiring tales we've ever profiled on the Second Act Stories podcast. Part of the Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, New York, Fraidy was married at the age of 19. It was an arranged marriage to a man she barely knew. He demonstrated a violent streak within a week of the wedding punching his fist through a wall and threatened to kill her. Over the next twelve years, she feared for her own life on a daily basis. But she eventually she found a way to get a college education, achieve financial independence, divorce her husband and escape with the custody of her two daughters. Today, she is the Founder and Executive Director of Unchained At Last, the only organization in the United States dedicated to ending forced and child marriage through direct services and advocacy. Live from the 2nd Annual Stars and Stripes Classic, I sat down with Chairman of the Green Beret Foundation retired Lieutenant General Ken Tovo and Chief Warrant Officer Sean McCormick to talk about what it takes to build true interoperability between air and ground units, and why there is no such term as “more important.”Chief McCormick served as a lead pilot in the 160th SOAR after a career in 75th Ranger Regiment; he also served as General Tovo's pilot while the General was the USASOC Commander. Their partnership and friendship provides a rare perspective on the leadership, trust, and relentless commitment that define Special Operations. Together, they shared how those experiences shaped their understanding of teamwork, mission focus, and the ability to take on any challenge. We're spending the winter out west with classic western movies and their stars in January. First up is Shane, the story of a gunfighter who tries to turn over a new leaf but has to fall back on his trade when his newfound family is threatened. We'll hear the two lead actors - Alan Ladd and Van Heflin - in Suspense shows as well as a radio recreation of the movie. First, Heflin is a reporter who receives an invitation from a murderer in "The Lady in the Red Hat" (originally aired on CBS on November 30, 1950). Then, Ladd stars in a tale of revenge from the old west in "A Killing in Abilene" (originally aired on CBS on December 14, 1950). Finally, both men reunite as The Lux Radio Theatre presents "Shane" (AFRS rebroadcast of a show from February 22, 1955).

Heather Niemi Savage is a North Carolina-based composer with an eclectic style drawing on her broad background in classical, jazz, musical theater, and sacred music. Her compositions have been performed throughout the United States by ensembles such as the Argus String Quartet, the North-South Consonance, the Great Woods Symphony, and members of the Raleigh Symphony. Her most popular piece “Daughter of the Stars,” for string orchestra, placed second in the 2020 American Prize for Composition (pops/light music  division.) Her piece, “When Music Sounds,” won second place in the Huntsville Master Chorale Composition Competition, making her the first woman to final in this annual competition. As a collaborative pianist, Heather works with the Appalachian Chorale under Dr. Davaughn Miller in addition to accompanying an undergraduate vocal methods class, local school choruses, and the choir at St. Luke's UMC in Hickory, NC. Many people assume that astronomy proves millions of years. But it actually challenges this idea.

Stars are born when giant clouds of gas and dust break apart and collapse. And if that’s all there was to it, the Milky Way Galaxy would give birth to a couple of hundred stars every year. Instead, thanks to feedback from the stars themselves, it makes only a few. Feedback is a process that clears away the material for making stars, but can also trigger the birth of more stars. Young stars, for example, produce winds and jets that blow away the gas and dust around them. Since stars are born in clusters, many youngsters can be sweeping away the star-making material at the same time. That pares back the number of stars that can be born in a cluster. Mature stars add to the feedback – not only with winds, but also with radiation. Hot stars generate a lot of ultraviolet energy. It vaporizes tiny particles of dust – eliminating possible building blocks for new stars. The heaviest stars explode as supernovas. These blasts can clear out the space for light-years around, creating big, empty bubbles. And supernovas also accelerate subatomic particles around them to almost the speed of light. These “cosmic rays” help to sweep away the raw material for making more stars. But supernovas can also enhance the birth rate. Their shock waves can cause distant clouds of gas and dust to collapse to form stars. So feedback is a complex process – one that both aids and hinders the birth of new stars.
