Monia, the Exiled Fan, returns for a discussion on Angel: The Series. This episode covers seasons one and two. We discuss the show, our reactions to it, and why people might dislike Joss Whedon's work. This is part one of a two part series.
Where do we go from here? That question has perhaps never been as relevant or as painful within the Whedony community as it is right now. It’s a difficult time to be a fan, as the recent and continuing alegations and revelations about the man that has, so far, given this entire fandom its name, force us to reckon with some hard truths. I thought this podcast could continue with perhaps just a passing mention of the controversy, but it quickly became clear that I, and thankfully some much smarter people than myself, would have to address this head on. And so I welcome you to this Very Special Episode of Conversations with Dead People. I ramble on uselessly, as usual, but two of my very favoritest people in the world, let alone the field of Whedon Studies, Nikki Stafford and Dale Guffey join me to talk about how and why all of this feels so much more personal than similar fallen pop culture icons; what, if anything, I should do with this podcast going forward; and what we think this might all mean for the Whedon Studies Association. It’s a horribly unpleasant topic of conversation, made so much more enjoyable by having it with such wonderful people. NEXT: Dale is sticking around to record the podcast we’d PLANNED to record this week. We’ll be continuing our journey through Angel: The Series with episodes 103, “In the Dark,” 104, “I Fall to Pieces,” and 105, “Rm w/a Vu.” LIBRARY Bite Me!: The Unofficial Guide to Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Seven Seasons One Book), by Nikki Stafford Once Bitten: An Unofficial Guide to the World of Angel, by Nikki Stafford Faith and Choice in the Works of Joss Whedon, by K. Join Emily Maesar (along with guest Jeffery Ray) on a journey through Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Episode #2 is the first of two episodes about Buffy. This week Jeffery and I covered seasons 1-4. There are spoilers for Buffy (obviously) and quite a few for Angel: The Series as well. And, in all seriousness, we did have a pretty solid conversation about race and rape in the show. Amon wants a revolution, but first we get a revelation. Chapter 103, "The Revelation" to be precise, wherein we learn that the leader of the Equalists, while really scary and kind of a dick, might possibly have a point? Paul and Eric are in full-on fanboy mode, but Arlo is initially uncomfortable with the muddy moral waters this new series is treading in, with "villains" that are actually the oppressed and "heroes" that could in fact be the oppressors. But Amon has a plan, and it involves taking away people's bending abilities! And in chapter 104, "The Voice in the Night" haunts Korra with the fear of that very thing. We talk again about how The Legend of Korra is the Angel: The Series to Avatar: The Last Airbender's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, exploring more mature, challenging, and morally ambiguous subject matter than perhaps its parent series. Also, we meet the wonderful Asami (we'll get through this love quadrangle stuff, I promise), the adorable Pabu (he's a friend, not a snack), and we jump to some disturbing conclusions about the Republic City Council, start to get really worked up about it, and then realize that we may already be falling for Amon's propaganda crap. Oh yeah, and we finally, officially settle on a time for the live-action The Last Airbender film. We will suffer for your entertainment. Next: we hit the Korra Book One midpoint with chapters 105-107, "The Spirit of Competition," "And the Winner is...," and "The Aftermath."
